The Austin Film Critics Association (Afca) not only awarded honors today to 2013 films like Her, 12 Years a Slave and Gravity, but also recognized several films with local and Texas ties.
Her, the latest film from Spike Jonze (which topped my own personal list of the year's best) won't be released in Austin until Jan. 10, but Afca considered all films that had (or will have) a Us release in 2013. Her also won Best Original Screenplay, by Jonze, and Best Score, by Arcade Fire. And Afca created a special honorary award for Scarlett Johansson to recognize her voice work in the movie.
I've included the press release as well as the full list of awards and the group's Top Ten list below. A few notes about Austin and Lone Star connections:
Best Austin Film went to Before Midnight (Elizabeth's review), from local filmmaker Richard Linklater. This is Linklater's fourth Best Austin Film award from Afca.

This week’s episode sees a welcome and significant progression in the season’s main arc, a superpower plot more in keeping with the McU and a couple of decent steps forward in some characters’ development. ‘The Girl in the Flower Dress’ may not have as interesting a story as last week’s ‘Eye-Spy’, but there’s enough juicy teases, new characters and concepts introduced to more than make up for its failings.
Opening in Hong Kong, we meet amateur magician Chan performing street magic to an unimpressed crowd only to break out his true talent: he can produce small bursts of fire from his hands. Seemingly impressed by his display, American Raina (the titular ‘girl’, and an enigmatic, compelling screen presence) gushes over him and they both go back to his place, only...

As is often the way with costume designers, Stephanie Collie is something of an unsung hero. We will not reel off her entire back catalogue, but it does include South Riding (2011, TV), Telstar (2008) Peter’s Friends (1992) and perhaps most exciting of all, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998).
Now, anyone old enough to remember when Lock, Stock arrived will remember just what an incredible influence its Mod inspired costumes had on the world of fashion. You could not pick up a men’s magazine of the time without seeing some guy in slim trousers and a jersey polo shirt. Stephanie Collie invented this look, thus providing one of the clearest examples of how costume design can transcend a movie and become something more. We would go so far as to say Stephanie Collie helped define an era.

Prince Michael is allegedly not interested in bonding with his birth mother. For four days beginning Thursday 25 April, the London o2 in Greenwich hosts Robert Redford’s 2013 Sundance London Film and Music Festival, a celebration of independent cinema both home-grown and stateside, flavoured with live music performances, panel discussions, and Q&A sessions with filmmakers.
This year’s selection includes some familiar faces: Jeff Nichols’ 2012 Cannes competitor Mud resurfaces ahead of its UK release next month, while Sundance regular Lynn Shelton returns with Touchy Feely, about a massage therapist afflicted with a sudden aversion to bodily contact. Bonds of all kinds are an overarching theme of the main programme, broken in divorce (A.C.O.D.) strengthened in friendship (The Kings of Summer and The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete) and unearthed in the unlikeliest of places (Emmanuel and the Truth About Fishes).

Last year, Ben Solovey discovered a workprint of Manos: The Hands of Fate and set out to complete a high definition restoration of the film. After a successful crowd funding project and months of hard work, the restoration is complete and will be screening tomorrow at the Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival. We recently had a chance to catch up with Ben Solovey and ask him all about the restoration project and his love of Manos:
When did you first become aware of Manos: The Hands of Fate? What was your initial impression of it?
Ben Solovey: Like most people, I first saw “Manos” on Mystery Science Theater 3000, more specifically on a VHS release of that episode. It’s one of the few episodes that has consistently been available in stores thanks to the public domain. My first impressions were of the griminess of the film, but also...

Spoilers ahead for those who haven't yet watched the season five premiere. For those who have, read on as we wrestle with a few new burning questions, along with some unanswered holdovers:
How will Eric and Bill Be Punished?
If there is anyone within the "True Blood" universe who takes corporal punishment seriously, it's the Vampire Authority. As such, there is no way that Eric and Bill will escape their uptight, unforgiving clutches without a few flesh wounds. The King and his Sheriff...

Much beloved indie actress Debbie Rochon has been named the Honorary Chairperson of the Buffalo Screams Horror Film Festival, which expands to six days in its third year, October 17th–22nd at the Market Arcade Film and Arts Centre in downtown Buffalo, NY.
Ms. Rochon was the festival’s first guest in 2010, when she received the Dedication to Excellence in Independent Filmmaking award. In 2011 she won the festival’s award for Best Actress in a Horror Short for her work in Bart Mastronardi’s critically acclaimed interpretation of The Tell Tale Heart.
"I am deeply honored and very excited to be involved with The Buffalo Screams Horror Film Festival again this year!" says Debbie. "This time I have been asked to be the Honorary Chairperson, and I can't think of a higher compliment than that. I am so grateful to be standing beside some of the most dedicated, talented, and...

We'are at that strange point in the cinematic year, a sort of dead calm before the contenders for awards get released. But that doesn't mean there isn't anything going on this week. Tuesday is a particularly tough day for Austin cineastes as there are three don't-miss events kicking off.
I seriously want to clone myself just for Tuesday. aGLIFF starts that night, and it looks like another stellar year, with Texas representing (seriously, Cancerpants has to be the best-named film this year, and it's an Austin film). The (free!!) Community Cinema series starts Tuesday at Austin Public Library with Peace Unveiled, an episode of the PBS series Women, War & Peace that doesn't air until October. And Austin Film Society's latest Essential Cinema series "Days and Nights of Being Wild: Hong Kong New Wave" begins that night too with Wong Kar-Wai's Days of Being Wild (pictured above). I don't get to Essential Cinema screenings enough,...

Last week I was a very bad recapper. I was so busy viewing the world through my rose-colored glasses, clutching my pearls, and hugging my Care Bears that I naively didn't appreciate the implications of what was about to happen with Jason and that line-up of Hot Shot freaks.
Then you good people went ahead and pointed it out to me. Um, thanks, I guess? So I got to spend the week Purelling my eyeballs and bleaching my brain all in an effort to try to forget any of that ever happened.
But now comes this week's episode and confirmation that what you all suspected was indeed what went down with poor Jason. And I don't think we've got enough cutesy Wtf fang icons around here to communicate just how fanged up this whole storyline has become. So let's first turn to more pleasing storylines …

Apparently it's nostalgia day for me. I missed the fact that Nora's Will opened last week in Austin. This fantastic little feature is a witty and heartfelt tale about the first five days after a woman's death, and won over audiences at Cine Las Americas a couple of years ago. Thankfully it's still playing up at the Arbor. You might want to check it out if you make the mistake of trying to get tickets to Terrence Malick's latest this week, which is sure to be Sro and not just because he's local, and it's a local production. Many Years Ago, Malick's Days of Heaven was featured in the "Film as Literature" course at my college, and we discussed the sumptuousness of that film's cinematography along with other laudable attributes at length; word has it Malick's skill hasn't lessened.

Movies We've Seen:
The Concert -- Mélanie Laurent stars in this comedy about a once celebrated conductor who intercepts a invitation for his former orchestra to perform in Paris. Read Debbie's review for more details. (Arbor)
Source Code -- Duncan Jones' sophomore feature also deals with classic science fiction themes, although this time there's a much larger cast, and much more at stake as Jake Gyllenhaal tries to stop a terrorist attack and save the girl. I agree with Jette's review -- put this on your must see list. (wide)
The King's Speech (PG-13 version) -- Honestly, I haven't seen this new censored version of the film reworked to remove the (therapeutic) profanity in the original release version. But hey, if it means 13 year olds won't act like 3-year-olds repeating what they've heard before,...

Oh, Idoldome, I missed you too. I wasn’t sure I would. As I headed toward American Idol’s sound stage at Los Angeles’ CBS Television City, I was thinking about all the other places I’d rather be on this particular cold, rainy night. But my attempts to be depressed about attending another season of Idol were futile as soon as I stepped inside the sound stage, walked past the judges’ makeup chairs, and took my seat in the newly redesigned Idoldome. Think back to Robert De Niro (Heat). Think back to Al Pacino (Scent of a Woman). Robert De Niro was known for his intensity. Al Pacino was known for his flashy screen presence. Now think of veteran character actor of horror films, Bill Oberst Jr. (Dismal, Vivid, The Devil Within). Bill Oberst Jr. has both the flash of Pacino and the intensity of De Niro. It's the best of both worlds in one package. And directors and producers are taking notice. In less then four years, Bill Oberst Jr. has had well over thirty film credits. Since he works his fair share in the horror genre, he is often seen playing the villain or the creepy guy or even, on occasion, the rapist. However, Bill Oberst Jr. wants you to know that their is more to him then just that. That he has an extra layer of dimensionality. That he's not just one note.

Hello all! Sorry about the week hiatus but I was on vacation. First up here is a recap of Sunday's True Blood. Expect a recap of episode 5 sometime tomorrow. Here we go!:
The episode starts off with Sookie being taken into Russell's mansion in slow motion. Bill pleads for Sam to get her out of there, but when he refuses to Bill stakes one of Russell's vampire guards and attempts to stake Russell, but to no avail. He is 3000 years old and very strong. Russell orders Lorena to take Bill to the slave quarters and kill him and Eric gives Sookie to the king, telling him that he doesn't know what she is, but she is valuable. Oh Eric, you goofball!
Next we cut to Merlottes where Arlene is dealing with an especially tough customer who is asking an awful lot of questions about their peas. Arlene gives the order to the flirting,...

Still have the image of Bill twisting Lorena's head around 180 degrees? Let's see what else True Blood can throw our way.
Sookie cleans Alcide's wound from his battle at Lou Pine's. The two discuss werewolves doing V, and Alcide is sickened by the idea; it goes against everything they stand for. Sookie asks him about Debbie, and he tells her she was his fiancee, until she left him about a month ago. His sister Janice still sees her from time to time as Janice goes to her parlor to get her hair done. Sookie's cell phone rings, and she asks it. After calling Bill's name twice, he replies. She tells him that she knows that the werewolves have taken him, and wants to know where he is so she can come get him. Bill informs her that he is not under captor, but that he has decided to leave his life in Bon Temps,...

MattV here with another commentary filled recap of last nights True Blood!
2 weeks ago we were treated with one of the most disturbing endings of a True Blood episode yet and thankfully this weeks episode turned down the disturb knob. So far this season the writers have set up “Operation Werewolf” and the vampire king of Mississippi Russell as the two big bads of the season, but how do they fit together? Well this week’s episode finally shows us who is truly boss and sets up what is likely to be a bloody future confrontation for many of our favorite characters. But more on that later, lets get started at the beginning:

So far this season the writers have set up “Operation Werewolf” and the vampire king of Mississippi Russell as the two big bads of the season, but how do they fit together? Well this week’s episode finally shows us who is truly boss and sets up what is likely to be a bloody future confrontation for many of our favorite characters. But more on that later, lets get started at the beginning:
In the opening teaser we see a scene that was constantly replayed on the HBO promos for season 3. Bill calls up Sookie, who is treating Alcide's wounds, and tells her that he is breaking up with her...

When we last parted ways with Bon Temps, Sookie had fired a shot at an invading werewolf. Did she hit her target? Was Eric able to save her? Is Bill still being held captive by The King of Mississippi? Let's catch up inside, but be warned, like always, if you haven't watched yet, this is filled with detail and loaded with spoilers.
We open where we left off, with Sookie's bullet, in Matrix-time, flying through Gram's living room. Eric leaps in front of the bullet to prevent the death of the werewolf, hoping to gain information from him. Upon seeing Eric's blood, the wolf transforms back to human, and Sookie can hear his thoughts, excitement over the now present V flowing from Eric's chest. Eric holds the wolf off him, trying to get answers from him. He chokes him until he struggles for air, and when he lets him loose,...

Believe it or not, film news is happening in Austin that has nothing -- really nothing -- to do with SXSW. Here's a sample:
On Sunday afternoon, author Alison Macor will be reading/signing her book Chainsaws, Slackers, and Spy Kids: Thirty Years of Filmmaking in Austin, Texas. I intend to be there and am looking forward to a good read ... well, probably not until after SXSW, unfortunately. (I know me. I'll read the book while trying to do fest prep. Sleep is the enemy, as Debbie keeps telling me.) Over at the Austin Chronicle, Kimberley Jones has an interview with Macor, and you can read an excerpt from the book about The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The book signing is on Sunday at 3 pm at BookPeople.Austin Film Festival has announced a discount on Lone Star Badges for the 2010 fest -- they're now only $75 through March 7. Also, anyone...

These intros to the news tidbits are always a bit dull, so let's cut to the chase and find out what's going on with Austin film news:
Over at Cinematical, Eric Snider profiled Sundance 2010 film Skateland. What he didn't mention -- and we found out from austin360movies -- is that Skateland director/co-writer Anthony Burns lives in Austin. Parts of the film were shot in Marshall, Texas. We're excited to hear (again through austin360movies, a new Twitter feed you might want to start following) that local writer Alison Macor's book Chainsaws, Slackers, and Spy Kids will become available in March. If you didn't guess from the title, the book is a history of Austin filmmaking. The Austin Chronicle has an interview with local musician Ryan Bingham about his big-screen debut in the film Crazy Heart (Debbie's review).Just a reminder that Chris Smith's film Collapse is...

Up and coming Scream Queen Michele Morrow, clad as a cat ("I'm a bad kitty!" - see below), has just recounted her short but impressive horror film career in Basement Jack, Bled and Silo.
Ironically, the busy and charming performer went through a horrific real-life experience on Basement Jack.
Pat Jankiewicz/Fangoria:You broke your neck making Basement Jack?
Michele Morrow: I was in a stunt accident right after filming it. We were doing a behind-the scenes day and I made a choice to come in and be part of it. They had a trampoline type device on set that uses hydraulics for car explosions in movies.
Pat Jankiewicz: An Air Ram?
Michele Morrow: Right! I stepped on it to fling myself up. It threw me up about 20 feet in the air, but then I lost my balance in the...

The latest comedy from Austin filmmaker Mike Judge, Extract, is out on DVD today. Just in time for Christmas, you can sit with your family and watch a movie about insurance fraud, adultery, sexy con artists, dopey gigolos, drug-pushing bartenders ... hmm, I may have to get my hands on a copy. As you can see from my review, I got a kick out of the movie, although it may not be as repeatedly watchable as Office Space or Idiocracy. Jenn Brown also reviewed the film.
The DVD release gives me an excuse to share a few more photos from the local Extract premiere at the Paramount in August. As I noted in my article, everyone was sweating like crazy, although you're supposed to call it "glow" when actors do it. Still, the folks on the red carpet that evening were good-natured about it. Debbie Cerda was also there and got...

A custody battle may be brewing over the future of Michael Jackson's three children. Just four days after the singer's sudden death on June 25, Jackson's mother, Katherine, has filed a petition in Los Angeles Probate Court seeking legal guardianship of Jackson's three children. "Joe and Katherine Jackson want those children!," a source close to the family tells People. Jackson had two kids - Prince, 12 and Paris, 11 - with ex-wife Debbie Rowe. His youngest son, Prince Michael II, 7, was born to an unnamed surrogate. Although Rowe is still the legal parent of the two older children, her next step is unclear.

Filmmaker Gregory Lamberson passed along an update on Slime City Massacre, the sequel to his 1988 flick Slime City, which is gearing up to shoot next month. He additionally sent some photos of a makeup FX test session with actress Jennifer Bihl and a postapocalyptic concept image; you can see those below.
“I developed this project simultaneously with another one called Deadly Rites,” Lamberson says. “I suspected that the executive producer on Deadly Rites was jerking my chain, and when my suspicion proved correct, I had Slime City Massacre ready to go. I knew that the only way I was going to get another feature off the ground was to say, ‘I’m going to make this film come hell or high water. Somehow I’ll raise the money and begin production on July 11.’ I was only off by one day—we’re shooting on July 10!”
