Gotta feeling ’24 is gonna be a good year, at least for fans of The Who’s Tommy: The acclaimed Chicago stage production directed by Des McAnuff is heading to Broadway.
The newly reimagined production, produced by Stephen Gabriel and Ira Pittelman, will begin previews March 8, 2024, at the Nederlander Theatre, with an opening night set for March 28.
In a statement, Pete Townshend, who wrote the music, lyrics and co-wrote the book with McAnuff, said, “In 1969, when I originally wrote Tommy with The Who, nobody had ever written popular music songs about trauma, nobody talked about bullying, domestic sexual abuse was a subject that was virtually censored.
“Then, in 1993,” he continued, “working with Des on the staged theatre piece, we broke the established rules for a musical show. Now, the current generation is breaking all of those rules again – and what Des has achieved with this incredible new production honors them and their courage and audacity.

A new musical stage version of An Officer And A Gentleman will launch a North American tour in fall of 2020, producer Work Light Productions announced today.
The musical features a newly adapted book by Dick Scanlan (Tony-nominated in 2002 for Thoroughly Modern Millie and in 2010 for Everyday Rapture), based on an earlier book by Douglas Day Stewart (who wrote the screenplay for the 1982 movie) and Sharleen Cooper Cohen.
In addition to writing the newest version, Scanlan will direct. In a statement, he said, “Like all good stories, An Officer and a Gentleman is set in a specific world with its own culture, customs and costumes – the U.S. Navy. And like all great stories, its themes are universal: love, valor and the ways in which our reasons for pursuing a dream determine whether or not we’ll achieve it.”
The score will feature a catalogue of 1980s hits, including the film’s chart-topper “Up Where We Belong.

Though no relation to NBC’s highly-rated Easter special, Jesus Christ Superstar is heading to North American theaters next year. The touring production hails from London, where it won the 2017 Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival.
Directed by Timothy Sheader and with choreography by Drew McOnie, the North American production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic musical was announced today by Stephen Gabriel, president of Work Light Productions. The tour is set for Fall 2019.
Casting and dates have not been announced. Plans are for the production to hit more than 50 North American markets.
“Superstar speaks to both theater audiences and concert music fans,” said Gabriel. “This production pays tribute to the historic 1971 Billboard Album of the Year while creating a modern, theatrical world that is uniquely fresh and inspiring.”
