If idle hands are the devil’s tools, the devil cannot even think to catch up with Guillermo del Toro. Aside from working on post-production on Pacific Rim, he is tending to another project that he has been developing over these last few years, a 3D stop-motion film about Pinocchio. This will undoubtedly be a darker gleam of fantasy on the classic tale about a puppet who longs to become a real boy.
Variety reports that Guillermo del Toro will co-direct this project, titled Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio, with Mark Gustafson (The Fantastic Mr. Fox) for the Jim Henson Company. The story is set between Wwi and WWII in Italy “when everyone was behaving like a puppet, except for puppets,” according to del Toro. The film follows the puppet “embarking on a series of adventures and proving himself to be as indestructible as his love for his father.”

You really would think that Guillermo del Toro had enough on his plate, without deciding that he needs to co-direct one of the many millions of projects he’s already overseeing as a producer. But that would be to underestimate how his mind works. And he’s made it officially, telling Variety that he’ll handle co-directing duties on the stop-motion version of Pinocchio he’s being brewing for years now.Del Toro first announced his intention back in 2008, looking to harken back to a darker but still family-friendly take on the puppet tale, with illustrator Gus Grimly and co-director Adam Parrish King attached to oversee things, working from a story honed by Grimly, del Toro and frequent collaborator Matthew Robbins for the Jim Henson Company. The info-horn grew quiet for a while, until last year when things had moved on to Grimly still co-directing, but this time with Fantastic...

Dark gods of cinema be praised! The long-discussed stop-motion animation adaptation of Pinocchio from Guillermo del Toro, Gris Grimly, and the Jim Henson Company -- which I discussed with Grimly a little while back -- is finally moving forward. More on this sweet, sweet news after the jump. According to Variety, Del Toro has announced that "Pathe has come on to develop and produce the 3D project with production starting later this year." "Del Toro disclosed in 2008 that he had began working with Henson and Gris Grimly, who illustrated a 2002 version of "Pinocchio" [pictured above]. At that point, Grimly and Adam Parrish King were attached to co-direct but the Thursday announcement...

Guillermo has been in the news for all the right reasons. But he seems to have his handful every passing day. He is now working on a stop motion version of Pinnochio together with artist Gris Grimly. Variety elaborated on the news, revealing that the film will be co directed by Grimly and Adam Parrish King, with del Toro producing and co writing the screenplay.
In typical del Toro fashion, this is not your average child friendly Pinocchio tale. In an interview with Bloody Disgusting he revealed.
“We are trying to get a full stop-motion version of Gris Grimly’s Pinocchio off the ground, with the Jim Henson Company. The idea came from Gris, and everybody loves his book about it. The original story is far more perverse and spooky and semi-necrophilia vibe...

Since I just mentioned (movies/movie-news/4308-finally-the-real-pinocchio-story-comes-to-the-screen.html) this little film today, I figured it'd be nice to also feature it as today's short. The Wraith of Cobble Hill is a 15-minute short by Adam Parrish King. In 2006, it won the Short Filmmaking Award at the Sundance Film Festival. The film is a neighborhood drama about a Brooklyn kid's struggle with neglect and poverty, as well as the desire to lash out—all animated in claymation.

Last week, we told you that director Guillermo del Toro wanted to produce a new version of Pinocchio.
Today, Variety adds details and says the Jim Henson Co. will be on board for the darker interpretation of the classic Italian children’s tale. The film will be produced by Jhc presidents Brian Henson and Lisa Henson along with senior VP Jason Lust. Del Toro will exec produce since he’s busy until 2017.
The busy director is already working on the screenplay with Gris Grimly, who previously illustrated a version in 2002. Grimly and Adam Parrish King will co-direct the film which is estimated to require three years to produce using stop-motion techniques.

- I guess if it was early in Guillermo del Toro’s career, and he wouldn’t be attached to make films for the next two decades then he’d probably take on a re-imagined version of Pinocchio for himself, but its safe to say that the del Toro name on a project in any capacity is not like a “Tarantino presents” type gimmick. A fan of the macabre and fantasy, del Toro will kick-start a pair of careers in this project. Adam Parrish King made a name for himself with his brilliant Sundance-preemed stop-motion animated short The Wraith of Cobble Hill (which I’ll be digging out of my screeners for a second viewing sometime in the future) will be teaming with Gris Grimly, the illustrator who re-created a Pinocchio that will be the basis for the feature-length filmmmaking debut. Either writer/director/producer/caterer Guillermo del Toro came across a gap in his schedule for the next five decades, he's allergic to rest, or he's afraid that Luc Besson might beat him to it, but the man has decide to act as executive producer on a stop-motion version of Pinocchio that he's developing with the Jim Henson Company.
Mind you, this is already in addition to his coming duties on The Hobbit, Frankenstein, Drood, next week's Rosenberg bar mitzvah over in Glendale, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and a couple of other projects as well (with any luck, a third Hellboy film is among them).
According to Variety, del Toro is currently working on the screenplay with Gris Grimly, whose strikingly illustrated children's books I've only very recently been introduced to, and Grimly will then co-direct with Adam Parrish King, he of much sound editing background (which really ought...

Now here's some good news to brighten your weekend; a darker, more horror-friendly version of Pinocchio is being developed by Guillermo del Toro, The Jim Henson Company and Gris Grimly, according to Variety. Wow, with a team like that behind it, you know it’s going to be interesting if nothing else.
The project is being developed as a stop-motion animation film, with del Toro on as executive producer, Brian and Lisa Henson producing and the screenplay courtesy of del Toro and Grimly. Grimly and Adam Parrish King will co-direct the film, which will take about three years to finish.

Maybe Guillermo del Toro will just turn entirely into Tim Burton and we can have the two be surgically joined at the hip and work on the same films forever as news now turns to the latest flick pasted to del Toro's producing filmography as Bloody-Disgusting reports he is now working with the Jim Henson Co. on a stop-motion feature adaptation of Pinocchio. The twist is that it will be "a darker version of the original fairy tale." Oooo, scary long nose man! Variety has expanded on the Bd report where del Toro revealed he is working on the screenplay with Gris Grimley, who illustrated a 2002 version of "Pinocchio" with news that Grimley and Adam Parrish King are set to co-direct the film. Sounds to me like del Toro is forming his own Tim Burton/Henry Selick team-up. It's an interesting choice to tackle, but with the Disney adaptation of...
