UK-China relations took a further dive today after the UK government announced it would ban its mobile providers from buying new Huawei 5G equipment as of December 31, and mandated they remove all existing equipment from their networks by 2027. The move follows sanctions imposed on the Chinese tech giant by the U.S.. The countries say that Huawei poses a threat to national security, a claim the firm denies. In response, Huawei threatened to “move Britain into the digital slow lane”.
Melbourne International Film Festival has unveiled the program for its 68 1/2 edition, which is taking place in a digital format after the cancellation of the event’s regular festival due to the pandemic. Consisting of 113 films, including 12 world premieres and 83 Aussie premieres, the event will open with the national premiere of Kelly Reichardt’s First Cow. Benh Zeitlin’s Wendy will screen as the centerpiece, with Pablo Larraín’s Ema as the closing film.

London-based indie producer Nevision has optioned author Mg Leonard’s trilogy of children’s books, Beetle Boy, Beetle Queen and the recently released Battle Of The Beetles. Published by Chicken House in the UK and Scholastic in the U.S., Canada and Australia, as well as more than thirty other markets, the books center on thirteen-year-old Darkus Cuttle’s search for his kidnapped father, leading him to discover a mountain of extraordinary beetles and pitting him against the mad-scientist of the fashion world Lucretia Cutter, an haute-couture villainess with an alarming interest in insects. Nevision is developing a live-action adaptation for TV with Leonard writing the screenplay and Nigel Pickard executive producing. Ceri Barnes is Development Executive.

Banijay Group is launching a Rome-based banner, Banijay Studios Italy, which will be dedicated to premium scripted content.
Headed by Massimo Del Frate, Banijay Studios Italy will develop original IPs for local broadcasters, as well as adaptations of formats from Banijay Group’s extensive global content library. The new outfit will also collaborate with Italian broadcasters and partner with Banijay Group’s worldwide network of producers.
Del Frate joins Banijay Group from Endemol Shine Italy, where he was head of drama from 2002 to 2018. While at Endemol Shine Italy, Del Frate worked on primetime series such as “Sisters” and “The Good Apprentice.”
The launch of Banijay Studios Italy underscores Banijay Group’s commitment to expand its global footprint in the scripted market, having already built a track record in unscripted with brands such as “Survivor,” “Temptation Island” and “Wife Swap.” Banijay’s most successful scripted shows include “Versailles” (pictured) and “Occupied.
