Tonight in Toronto, Denzel Washington and his Training Day director Antoine Fuqua will launch a new franchise, The Equalizer, a drama loosely based on the TV series. Thankfully for fans of Washington’s action work, the film is a closer spiritual cousin to Man On Fire, with Washington playing a righteous character who is merciless on the bad guys. Here, Fuqua, who is also mounting a Magnificent Seven remake with Washington for MGM, discusses the star’s everyman appeal and what makes him capable of so many indelible performances.
Deadline: Watching The Equalizer made me feel like I’d gotten the Man On Fire sequel I never thought possible when John Creasy died after killing every kidnapper in Mexico. The spirit of the movie courses through The Equalizer. What is it about Denzel Washington killing bad guys that makes it feel like Christmas morning?
Fuqua: [Laughs]. I just think it’s...

The Republican National Committee hopes new spokesman “Scott Greenberg” will convince citizens to “create your American dream” by voting for the political party, but all he's really doing is reminding viewers how important it is for actors — er, uh, hip, young conservatives — to remember their lines. The videos titled “Paycheck” (above) and “All of the Above” (below) feature a 20-something dressed in deceptively stylish clothing (a.k.a. what all the cool kids are wearing these days) while delivering a load of propaganda he's clearly reading off of cue cards behind the camera in front of him. Exclusive: Comedy Central has given a pilot green light to Legends, an animated comedy from Bento Box Entertainment. This marks the first pilot order for Bento Box since the primetime animation studio expanded its business into developing and producing its own original animated content last summer with the hire of Mike Clements as head of the newly formed Creative Development and Original Programming Division. Legends is described as an urban animated comedy centering on a trio of high school basketball players who are legends in their own minds – and really, nowhere else. Freshmen benchwarmers and friends Jamal, Grover and Milk try and mostly fail to make an impression at Bluford High, whether it’s on the court or with the ladies. The project was created and developed by animator Brad Abelson (The Simpsons), Clements, sports producers Quinn Hawking (Espn, Fox Sports, NFL Network) and Josiah Johnson (NFL Network, Jim Rome On Showtime...

One of the most hilarious and head-scratching moments of the 2013 Emmy Awards came when host Neil Patrick Harris was giving the TV audience a mid-commercial taste of what was coming up next on the show. While he was listing off reasons to keep watching, a man behind him awkwardly side-stepped out of frame.
Just what was that mysterious man doing there? Was he a member of the crew who found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time? Part of a pre-planned joke by Nph? A mysterious video-bomber? Or something else entirely?
While the circumstances around the man's appearance aren't immediately clear, his identity is: Paul Greenberg. The Emmy-winner is best known for his stint as D.A. Scott Greenberg on "Reno 911" and for being a writer for both the 2013 Emmys and the 2013 Tonys.
That means Greenberg and Harris probably have a bit of a rapport going right now,...
