As the British Academy Awards approach (the BAFTAs take place on February 16 at London's Royal Opera House), don't count out wily Oscar campaigner Harvey Weinstein's Best Picture Oscar contender "Philomena," which scored well with BAFTA nominations and could gain a boost on its home turf during prime Oscar voting season. (Final ballots will be available on Friday, February 14; completed ballots are due by 5 pm on Tuesday, February 25.) There are several hundred Brits in the Academy. Weinstein brought the real life Philomena Lee not only to the Golden Globes but to Washington, D.C., to push for adoption reforms with Senators Claire McCaskill and Chris Murphy. Will Stephen Frears and Steve Coogan's "Philomena" beat Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity," which leads with 11 BAFTA nominations, or Brit helmer Steve McQueen's "12 Years a Slave" for Best Picture, or settle for Best British Film? Both "Gravity" and "12 Years a Slave" will pick up some BAFTA wins--Brit.

Sequart Research & Literacy Organization is proud to announce the release of its newest book of comics analysis, Shot in the Face: A Savage Journey to the Heart of Transmetropolitan, which is edited by Chad Nevett.
Published in 1997-2002, Warren Ellis and Darick Robertson’s Transmetropolitan became famous for its foul-mouthed protagonist, Spider Jerusalem, and his “filthy assistants.” But it’s also a long-form comics masterpiece, a sci-fi comic that succeeded despite the odds, and an examination of journalism and politics — and how they intersect (or fail to do so). This book explores all these topics and more, from multiple points of view. It also includes interviews with both Ellis and Robertson.
Contributors include Greg Burgas, Johanna Draper Carlson, Julian Darius, Sara K. Ellis, Ryan K. Lindsay, Patrick Meaney, Jason Michelitch, Chris Murphy, Chad Nevett, Kevin Thurman, Brett Williams, and Sean Witzke.
The book sports a cover by Kevin Colden and runs 164 pages.

The incorrect claim Mitt Romney made about 47 percent of the country paying no taxes has been a common talking point of the right for more than a year.
It's been so common, in fact, that it's hard to find a conservative who hasn't used it, often suggesting the bottom half of the income ladder needs to pay more in taxes. That includes Linda McMahon, the Gop Senate candidate in Connecticut, who roundly denounced Romney for it Tuesday.
“I disagree with Governor Romney’s insinuation that 47% of Americans believe they are victims who must depend on the government for their care," McMahon said in a statement on her website. "I know that the vast majority of those who rely on government are not in that situation because they want to be. People today are struggling because the government has failed to keep America competitive, failed to support job creators, and failed...

World Wresting Entertainment, a Connecticut-based company formerly led by Connecticut Gop Senate candidate Linda McMahon, announced plans this week to remove "dated and edgier footage from digital platforms."
Clips from racy WWE segments have served as piercing ammunition for political attack ads against McMahon in the past. During her failed Senate run in 2010, her opponents took particular advantage of a show that featured a scantily clad woman being called a "bitch," before being told to bark like a dog and take her clothes off. In another, McMahon's own daughter entered the ring to chants of "slut." At the time, McMahon downplayed these controversial episodes as symptoms of the show being like a "soap opera" and maintained that the company, which she left in 2009, had toned down its content in recent years.

Australian actor Matthew Newton, 35, has been arrested for the second time in a month in Miami, making his off-screen bad boy antics more famous than his onscreen roles.
In the most recent incident on April 17, Newton was arrested for punching and shoving a clerk at the Courtyard Marriott in Coconut Grove.
Watch the assault in the above video.
Surveillance video from the hotel showed that after attacking the clerk, Newton sprawled next to his victim on the lobby floor and began rolling around as if he was also in pain.
Barefoot and disheveled, the actor, who starred in "Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities", "Underbelly," "Queen of the Damned," and "Three Blind Mice," was charged with battery and resisting an officer without violence.
Just days ago on April 6, Newton was arrested in Miami and charged with resisting police and trespassing on property after a warning.

Matthew Newton's lawyer has told a court in Sydney he fears his client is "suicidal" following his arrest in Florida on Friday.
The Australian actor, who is currently staying in the U.S., is facing legal woes Down Under after he was accused of assaulting a taxi driver in December and was recently ordered to return to his native country to take part in the court proceedings.
However, his troubles escalated last week (ends08Apr12) when he was detained by police in Miami on suspicion of obstruction and trespass. He was subsequently released on $200,000 (£125,000) bail.
Newton's attorney, Chris Murphy, appeared at Downing Centre Local Court in Sydney on Tuesday as part of the ongoing assault case and addressed the incident in the U.S.
He insisted Newton, who has battled mental health problems in the past, had not consumed any alcohol before his arrest and is due to see a therapist to address his fragile emotional state.
He told the magistrate, "My client is hunted like a wounded animal... No one's suggesting any aggression on his part... My extreme concern... is that he is suicidal. He is seeing a psychiatrist today. This is an unfortunate thing that has happened in America."
Magistrate Jane Mottley reiterated that Newton will have to return to Sydney to face the charges against him, but she adjourned the case for three months to allow time for the American legal proceedings to be completed.

The 35-year-old Underbelly actor was charged with punching taxi driver Mohsen Khayami in the neck and head while he was in his vehicle in Sydney on December 4. Newton's lawyer Chris Murphy told a court earlier this week that the star was mentally ill at the time of the incident and asked for the matter to be dealt with under section 32 of the Mental Health Act. Matthew Newton was suffering "obvious side effects" from a "bomb load of medication" when he allegedly assaulted a taxi driver in Sydney last year, according to his lawyer.
The Australian actor, son of TV entertainers Bert and Patti Newton, is facing an assault charge after allegedly punching a cab driver during a ride through the city in December.
The case went to court on Tuesday and Newton's lawyer asked for his client to be dealt with under Australia's Mental Health Act because he was suffering the effects of his prescription medication at the time of the incident.
Attorney Chris Murphy told North Sydney Local Court that Newton, who suffers from bipolar and obsessive compulsive disorder, was taking a "bomb load of medication" including mood stabilisers and anti-depressants and was experiencing "obvious side effects".
He told the hearing, "This occurred when his mental illness was at its worst. He had medication difficulties. He had lost his support base... This is a man who has probably been mentally ill all his life, according to doctors... He was born in the public eye. From the day he was born, he's been the focus of the media. He needs some normalcy."
Magistrate Ellen Skinner adjourned the case until Wednesday.

Rep. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) on Tuesday became the latest Democrat to lambaste a recent decision by Lowe's home improvement stores to pull advertising from a reality TV show about American Muslims living in Michigan.
"This is a major American company rubber stamping basic foundational bigotry against a major American religious group," Murphy said of the decision, which was prompted by a complaint from right wing evangelical group the Florida Family Association. "This country was founded on the premise of religious freedom and this body should never remain silent when a group of people is marginalized just because they worship a different God."
In an earlier statement, the Florida Family Association claimed that TLC's "All-American Muslim" was "propaganda" that improperly characterized Muslims because it didn't depict anyone "advancing Islamic fundamentalism and Sharia law."
