“Releasing ‘Made in Mosjøen’ for free is not me giving into piracy and throwing more traditional release models overboard,” he told Empire of the release strategy. “As this is my personal project, it’s a chance for me to actually try to play a bit of ball with the filesharers and gain some audience insight, which I believe is vital knowledge to be able to survive as a filmmaker in the rapid evolving market. As far as I’m concerned, not being flexible means eventually breaking.

In today’s column, in order to uncover the weirdest web series in recent memory, we’re traveling to Norway. There, we find Made in Mosjøen, a bizarre and enticing offering from creator Aleksander Nordaas.
Normally, this is the point of the review where I would describe what the series is about, but with Made in Mosjøen, that isn't so simple. All I can say is that it features dark lighting, gratuitous nudity, mysterious and dangerous characters, and a casual disregard for the fourth wall--and that's just in the first episode alone.
As Made in Mosjøen carries on, it begins to take a more concrete shape, though Nordaas makes sure to carry a strange and eerie sensibility from episode to episode. At some points, Made in Mosjøen almost feels like an anthology series, with each installment introducing us to uncommon scenarios and characters who defy description. The closest comparison I...

The 19-episode series is now available to watch online.
Norwegian writer/director Aleksander Nordaas, best known internationally for 2012’s Thale, has launched a 19-episode webseries entitled Made In Mosjoen.
The English-language series is available for free at http://www.madeinmosjoen.com.
Nordaas runs Norway’s Yesbox Productoins alongside Screen 2015 Future Leader Bendik Stronstad. Their film Thale sold to more than 50 countries and showed at festivals including Toronto.
As with supernatural thriller Thale, the story from the webseries invents a mythical creature, and the director joked that it also included “a fishgun, a mummified cat, and some special cheese.”
“Made in Mosjøen was made as a web series because I want to learn,” Nordaas told Screen. “For me, it’s an unknown format, distribution model and genre/style. But soon it’s not. Soon, I can say, ‘Hey I’ve tried it, and this, this and this worked and failed.’ Then I put this first-hand experience into my...

Norwegian director Aleksander Nordaas made waves around the world a couple years back with his low budget creature feature Thale and he's certainly looking likely to arch an eyebrow or two with his new webseries Made In Mosjoen.Nordaas has released the entire pilot season of nineteen (!) episodes online for free and while I've only just started watching it myself two things are immediately apparent. First, this is going to be gorgeous to look at. And, second, it's weird as fuck. I'd offer a synopsis but I have no idea where it's going yet, frankly, and he's being deliberately cryptic on his own official outlets for it.While everything is available on YouTube I'm going to send you over to his official site as a starting...

David Lynch is currently, as we know, preparing his surprise return to Twin Peaks. But as if to demonstrate that Lynch doesn't have the monopoly on episodic oddity, Aleksander Nordaas, the Norwegian director of the excellent Thale (tah-lay), is launching his own web series, Made In Mosjøen. Thale's stars Silje Reinåmo and Jon Sigve Skard are among the cast. See what you make of the extended teaser trailer below...Speaking to Empire, Nordaas explains that releasing a free series is "sort of my personal tryout and response to what happened with Thale. After the release, I was absolutely thrilled by the growing interest among the international audience, but I wasn't equally thrilled about the numerous pirate-versions appearing all over. I decided to initiate a dialogue with the filesharers, and what I thought was going to be a major 'screw you' response actually turned out quite informative."Releasing Made In...

Clearly thanks to its "breakout" status in Kim Newman's Video Dungeon in the current issue of Empire , the quietly wonderful Norwegian fantasy Thale has just earned itself a sequel. Original writer/director Aleksander Nordaas remains at the helm for more folkloric Scandinavian scares. The original film concerns the titular forest sprite (tah-lay), who is one of the Huldra: siren-like creatures from Nordic myth. The Huldras' general modus operandi is to lure men to their deaths by sitting naked under waterfalls, but Thale has been captured for study by a well-meaning human guardian and imprisoned for some years. Upon his death, however, she's discovered by the crime-scene cleaners who come to scrub her cabin-in-the-woods, and her emergence from captivity attracts dangerous attention. The wordless Thale was affectingly played by Silje Reinåmo (Empire spoke to Silje at the Night Visions festival in Helsinki last autumn) but it's unclear at this stage...

Nordaas is signed on to write and direct the sequel, which will tap into the same Norse mythology as the original. If you haven't seen it yet (it's on DVD now, so check it out, and be sure to watch the trailer below), Thale is the story of a pair of crime-scene cleaners who stumble upon a mute woman being held in the cellar of a remote woodland house and eventually discover her true mythical identity... and the full scope of her supernatural abilities. *full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by XLrator Media. Director/writer: Aleksander Nordaas. Cast: Silje Reinåmo, Erlend Nervold and Jon Sigve Skard. There have been a number of films that have been flowing out of Norway, in recent years. Troll Hunter was a title that dealt with creatures of yore. This film released in 2010 to acclaim. The Cold Prey series of films also originated in this Scandinavian locale. Cold Prey was a slasher film that dealt with several unlucky hikers. Now, Norway and director Aleksander Nordaas have released a fantasy film titled Thale. The character Thale is a huldra, a mythical creature, which is an off-shoot of humanity. Thale's identity is at the core of the film. Slowly paced with very little tension, film fans might be best served searching for other titles from this smallish country. The film begins with the characters Elvis (Erlend Nervold...

Writer/director Aleksander Nordaas' modern dark fairy tale Thale is playing now in limited theaters courtesy of XLRator Media. The film follows two crime scene cleaners who happen upon a mythical creature known as the Huldra, which they discover locked away inside a concealed cellar on their latest job.
Once she’s released, the mysteries of both this creature and why she’s been hidden away for all these years are slowly revealed.
Recently Dread Central has the opportunity to chat with Nordaas about the fairy tales that inspired Thale, his tumultuous experiences working on the project over the course of three years which was a labor of love for all involved, and whether or not he’s planning to revisit this world in the future.

Title: Thale Director: Aleksander Nordaas Starring: Erlend Norvold, Jon Sigve Skard, Silje Reinåmo, Morten Andresen Supernaturally tinged Norwegian mystery-horror import “Thale” unfolds, on a narrative level, like some weird hybrid of “Sunshine Cleaning,” “Splice” and “Lady in the Water” — a work that dances around a couple moods and genres without ever really wholeheartedly committing to one in particular. Telling the story of a surprise woodland contact between a pair of guys and an awakened, captive huldra — a nymph-like creature of Scandinavian folklore — writer-director Aleksander Nordaas’ work gives off a certain eerie vibe that, along with its regional specificity, add up to give the movie a pungent originality. If you had to stumble upon an angry, vicious mythic creature, you could do worse than the sexy monster found in Thale by Elvis (Erlend Nervold) and Leo (Jon Sigve Skard), two guys who clean up after crime scenes. At their latest gig, the duo stumble upon Thale (Silje Reinåmo), a stunning woman in a secret basement who emerges out of a milky bathtub and who, it turns out, was kept captive for decades by a man who experimented on her while hiding her from mysterious pursuers. Audiotapes and a severed tail kept in a fridge prove clues to Thale's folkloric origins, though the mystery is soon altogether sapped by writer-director Aleksander Nordaas's decision to have Thale provide Elvis with psychic transmissions that bluntly lay out her backstory. Following on from the rather wonderful Norwegian modern fairy tale Troll Hunter, now we have another attempt at updating fairy-tale and folklore tropes for the modern age with Thale.
I would dispel any comparisons with that movie from your mind though before watching Thale because it’s very much a different film. Whereas Troll Hunter was all about the thrill and the action, Thale is a slow burn movie reminiscent of Vincenzo Natali’s underrated Splice from a few years ago.
Thale starts off with crime scene cleaners Elvis (Erlend Nervold) and Leo (Jon Sigve Skard) cleaning an especially bloody cabin in the forest. In the basement they find what seems like a lab/life support set up and find a young woman named Thale (Silje Reinamo) living under some kind of liquid in a bathtub. Through the research records they find as well as tapes left by the unfortunate...

★★★☆☆ An opening shot of a cassette-recorder playing and the screams of a woman give an instant suggestion that Aleksander Nordaas' sophomore feature, Thale (2012), will be venturing into the territory of torture porn. Much like fellow Norwegian creature-feature Trollhunter (Trolljegeren, 2010), however, it subverts its immediate genre trappings to give audiences something a little more unique. With a pair of kind-hearted characters and a lack of explicit horror, the film has a good-natured centre and is concerned with the oppression of secrets - both intimate and more expansive - more than tension or gore.

Director: Aleksander Nordaas. Review: Adam Wing. We can probably blame Troll Hunter for this. With stunning effects, lush scenery, strong performances and an inventive screenplay, André Øvredal’s second feature was one of the strangest and strongest horror movies of 2010. Thale walks the same path, dealing in mythical creatures, Norwegian folklore, a sprinkling of dark comedy and the promise of horror, but loses its footing when it comes to quality entertainment. Two cleaners, one cabin and an encounter with a mythical creature called Thale, that’s what you get with this disappointingly dreary Scandinavian creature feature. Leo (Jon Sigve Skard) and Elvis (Erlend Nervold) are crime scene cleaners, not that Elvis really has the stomach for it anymore. On their latest job they head down to the basement and discover Thale (Silje Reinåmo), unquestionably supernatural and mostly naked. It’s not long before Leo and Elvis believe they’ve discovered a real life huldra.

Last year I had the pleasure of seeing Thale at the Seattle International Film Festival. It’s a Norwegian supernatural thriller, with some chilling moments and imagery, and it certainly deserves a wider audience. That time has come, with Thale coming on VOD on March 21st, in theaters on April 5th, 2013, and on DVD April 23rd.
We have a bunch of stills, posters and a trailer to spotlight the film, which can be found below the synopsis.

Aleksander Nordaas’ film stars Morten Andresen, Erlend Nervold, Jon Sigve Skard, and Silje Reinamo.

We return with the latest edition of the Indie Spotlight, highlighting recent independent horror news sent our way. Today’s feature includes release details for A Resurrection, the first teaser trailer for Ten, a review of Smiley, and much more:
First Teaser Trailer for Ten: “Ten is a collectivist, post-exploitation psychological thriller devised as a possible explanation for the events of the 1972 Spektor Island Massacre. On a cold December afternoon, ten women arrive at a mansion on Spektor Island, famed for years of reported hauntings and strange activities. Will they live through the night?
The all-female cast film is a response to exploitation, slasher, and thriller films, with particular focus on the kind of storytelling prominent in b-movies and genre films from the 1950s to the 1980s. It explores the meaning and fluidity of identity and takes a number of surprising turns, paying homage to filmmakers and producers such as Alfred Hitchcock,...

Thale (Tail), the Norwegian-made horror fantasy about a pair of crime-scene cleaners at a remote woodland cabin who stumble across a captive mute woman sporting a tail, made quite an impact last year when it made the festival rounds, including Screamfest, Tiff and South by Southwest. Now it's got an official theatrical release set for the Us via XLrator Media, hitting screens on April 5th, preceded by an On Demand premiere on March 21st. Directed by Aleksander Nordaas, Thale is based on Scandinavian folklore, specifically a female faerie creature known as the Huldra, which in the film is portrayed as a kind of succubus who has apparently been kept prisoner in a basement room for many years. Thale will also be released on DVD April 23rd. Check out the eerie trailer...

Aleksander Nordaas’ Norwegian indie is a pretty interesting concept. Thale takes an ancient Norse tale and updates it around two friends who happen upon a supernatural creature while cleaning up a bucket of blood in a cabin in the woods.
The creature is known as a Huldra, a seductive and stunningly beautiful woman-beast who lives deep in the Scandinavian forest, prancing around naked, with a tail. Some of the folklore frames her as a kind creature who watches over woodsmen while they sleep. Other stories paint her in a slightly more demonic vein, luring men into the woods to have sex with them and killing the ones who don’t satisfy. I think we can guess which kind of Huldra we’ll be seeing in Hale.
She is also psychic. Lady really has it all.
Here’s the official synopsis:

Usually, a beautiful woman is reason enough to take a guy’s breath away – especially if she’s naked, and especially if she has you in a chokehold. While her vice grip tightens around your throat and you labour in your hopeless struggle to breathe, the fact that she used to have a tail somehow feels trivial; because, at that point, you’re attention may be preoccupied with something else.
Not exactly a daily problem for most, but this is exactly the situation that befalls a couple of Norwegian lads. Working with the appropriately named ‘No Shit Cleaning Service’, Elvis and Leo (Erlend Nervold and Jon Sigve Skard) are called upon to clean up a house nestled in the remote sylvan beauty of the country’s timberlands. Inside, however, the place is a right bloody mess.

So. Let's say you're an independent European director whose micro-budget feature is about to wrap up a wildly successful run on the festival circuit with an appearance at one of the world's biggest festivals. That film is still taking up enough of your time that you can't really shift gears into another feature but you've still got some creative energy to burn. What do you do?If you're Norway's Aleksander Nordaas - director of Thale - you gather up a bunch of driftwood and animate it all into some sort of odd aquarium scene. Yup. Wooden fish. Check out Nordaas' Kind Of Fishy below....

Toronto – On July 31st, the 37th annual Toronto International Film Festival announced its second wave of features and documentaries to be added to this year’s already promising lineup.
The ‘Midnight Madness’ programme, which showcases up and coming genre films, will return for a second year, with The Raid winning the inaugural audience choice award in 2011.
Tiff Programmer Colin Geddes says that the audience should expect “everything from outrageous horror comedies to mock-doc-eco-apocalypse thrillers, featuring trans-dimensional bugs, lewd Catholic priests, meat monsters and dog-snapping psychopaths that will animate the Ryerson Theatre when the clock chimes 12.”
Returning for its fourth edition this year is the ‘City to City’ programme, which puts a spotlight on filmmakers working and living in a certain city, introducing audiences to local independent films from around the world. This year’s city of choice is Mumbai.
Artistic Director Cameron Bailey says, “Mumbai’s cinema today is entirely...
