It’s not easy being the greatest female icon in the history of American comic books but, even after more than seven decades on the job, the Amazon princess they call Wonder Woman handles that burden with noble grace and singular determination.
That’s one way to interpret the striking, just-released cover artwork for the upcoming, 96-page, prestige-format, 750th issue of Wonder Woman from Burbank-based publisher DC Comics. The milestone issue will hit shelves at brick-and-mortar retailers on January 22, the same day it lands on the virtual spinner racks of online retailers.
The image evokes the Hellenic imagery of mighty Atlas hefting the world on his Titan shoulder and it was illustrated by Catwoman writer/artist Joëlle Jones, just one of the many DC stars who made contributions to commemorative issue.
Announced interior artists include Colleen Doran, Jesus Merino, Elena Casagrade, Gabriel Picolo, and Wonder Woman Rebirth illustrator Nicola Scott.

Wonder Woman #750 features an all-star lineup of talent.
Action Comics and Detective Comics went back to legacy numbering for huge milestones. In January, the Trinity is complete, as it's Wonder Woman's turn.
DC announced a giant anniversary issue - Wonder Woman #750 - coming January 22nd. It will be a 96 page comic, and like Action Comics and Detective Comics #1000, it will be a bit of a short story jam session. However, unlike those two thousandth issues, Wonder Woman #750 mixes in some newer talent to go with the classic Diana creators who are almost fundamentally required by the universe to be in here.
The book will feature new stories from Greg Rucka and Gail Simone, arguably the two most accomplished and important Wonder Woman writers still making comics today. Rucka wrote Diana's Rebirth arc that brought her up to date in the new continuity in addition to fleshing out...

As comics are a visual media I am going to talk about collecting original artwork these week. When I first came up with this subject my initial idea was just the eBay hunting side of things. But collecting original comic artwork goes much further, covering a variety of ways to acquire such items. What I want to do is highlight each of these ways and weigh up the pros and cons of each. This week I don’t really want to get into prices too much. Firstly it is a subject I am not overly familiar with and secondly the valuations aren’t readily available online like they are with comics. I want to start by saying that I believe if you are going to collect original artwork you should do so only for the enjoyment of collecting pieces and admiring the work that went into them. There are of...

A couple months ago, fan-favorite Marvel Comics writer Brian Michael Bendis left Marvel for DC Comics. After a couple months of speculation about what Bendis would be working on at DC, now we know. Thanks to Forbes, it's been revealed that he will be taking over the writing duties for three Superman titles, resurrecting Jinxworld, and launching an all-new imprint.
According to the report, Bendis will take on the Last Son of Krypton, which officially kicks off with a new story to be included in Action Comics #1000 coming out in April. After that DC will release his 6-issue miniseries Man of Steel starting May 30th.
Man of Steel will be published on a weekly basis and it will include art from Ivan Reis, Evan “Doc” Shaner, Ryan Sook, Kevin Maguire, Adam Hughes, and Jason Fabok. Above you will find a first look at the original pencil art for four of...

Not long ago, the comic book world was knocked on its collective rear upon hearing that one of Marvel’s greatest stalwarts, Brian Michael Bendis, was finally packing up and leaving town to work exclusively with DC. Granted, most big name creators hop between both major publishers at various points throughout their respective careers and we knew the day would probably come for Bendis, but the news was no less shocking.
Now, it’s only understandable that fans and journalists alike speculated as to which titles Bendis would actually pen. Having charted new territory for the likes of the Avengers, X-Men, and Spider-Man during his stay at the House of Ideas – in addition to being the chief architect behind many of their major crossover events – one would naturally expect him to take over a top tier title, and that’s exactly what’s happening as he’ll soon take the...

Most reality singing competitions are structured in a way that, by the time the audition rounds are reaching completion, they’ve been relegated to background noise while you fold two weeks’ worth of clean laundry. Or they leave you longing for a grizzly bear to bust through your front door and consume you whole, just so you don’t have to listen to ‘em anymore.
But The Voice — with its jaunty judges’ camaraderie, its international good vibrations (even when singers get rejected), and the fascinating ebb and flow of Christina Aguilera’s cleavage — provides the polar opposite experience. As the...

Although I felt a bit duped having found out that last night was actually not the final night of blind auditions on The Voice, I have to admit they brought a lot of talent to the table that will certainly make for great additions to the judges’ teams in the upcoming battle rounds. In fact, the only judge that didn’t add any new members was Adam, who, despite turning around twice, failed to lure any contestants to his team.
Team Christina managed to score one new member on last night’s episode of The Voice, beating out fellow judges Blake and CeeLo to win prospective law student and Egyptian beauty Sylvia Yacoub. Also scoring one new member to his team was CeeLo, as the sole button pusher for Amanda Brown, whose experience working as a backup singer for powerhouses such as Adele, certainly paid off.

Parks and Recreation is a delightfully intriguing series. It was originally conceived as a spin-off vehicle for Rashida Jones’ Office character, Karen, once she left the show as a regular guest star in the third season and it meant to follow her foray into the public sector. Instead, audiences who stuck with Parks from its premiere were treated to watching a series grow from a promising if not slightly painful first season (of only six episodes) to NBC’s top sitcom, arguably the best on American television today. Showrunner Michael Schur (who could be seen playing Dwight’s cousin, Mose, on The Office and developed the series with Greg Daniels) has guided Parks’ evolution from a weak imitation of the American Office to a series which has not only lived up to but surpassed the potential it always held. Indeed, Will Leitch of New York called the second season, “the...

Prometheus’ reign at the top of the Box Office chart finally came to an end this week as it drops down to fourth place with Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter landing the top spot. The Five Year Engagement also did pretty well going in at three, just behind MIB3 in second place.
Stephen Frears’ latest offering fared rather terribly though as despite a pretty widespread release it took only £117,000 in its first week. To put that into perspective, that leaves it trailing behind low-budget horror’s like Chernobyl Diaries and animated abominations likes Top Cat.
There’s not been a large-scale summer blockbuster released for a few weeks now so one of this week’s mid-carders will no doubt be hoping to capitalise. We’re big fans of Jay and Mark Duplass’s new film and we’re very happy to bring you this exclusive clip on the day Jeff, Who Lives at Home finds itself in UK cinemas.
Recently Muppeted Man Jason Segel leads us through the latest slice of studio baked mumble pie as the titular character who takes a day out of living like a hermit to venture out with his brother, played here by Ed Helms.
This little scene is of a great moment between the two leads as they continue their search for evidence of Jeff’s brother’s (possibly) adulterous wife in a nearby dumpster. The evidence is in the dumpster, not the wife. No, it’s not that kind of film at all.
You can read Adam’s glowing review here and watch the clip below,...

As expected, American Pie: Reunion had a solid first week at the box office but didn’t trouble the all-conquering Avengers at the top of the cinematic pile.
Truth be told I don’t see anything getting near the Marvel epic for another week or so yet either. It smashed the opening weekend box office record set by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 in the States and unsurprisingly a sequel has been confirmed this week by the studio.
This week’s big release though should do a pretty bit of business at the box office as well with Tim Burton’s latest quirky baroque offering Dark Shadows making its arrival on the big screen.
Burton has amassed some serious box office bank with his recent offerings such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factor and Alice in Wonderland and can now pretty much do whatever he pleases in the eyes of his employers.

Gig date: 9th May
Venue: Unit Club, Southampton
Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Southampton’s intimate Unit Club was the venue for a bit of pummelling mid-week hardcore when the boys from Polar. came to town in celebration of their fantastic new album Iron Lungs which has been critically acclaimed from all different corners, including a 4.5 star review on this very site. Bringing along their friends from Carcer City and with a support bill made up of some great local bands, it was a crushingly heavy night for the 50 or so people huddled inside away from the pouring Southampton rain.
Opening the night were local kids Five Miles North Of Nowhere who put on a set far beyond their years, in spite of a few technical difficulties with microphones, which persisted throughout the night. With catchy riffs and a vocalist with great screams who reminded me of Sean Smith from The Blackout,...

I can't remember a time I went to the Seattle International Film Festival (Siff) press launch and looked over the list of films and saw so many I was interested in seeing. The claim to fame for over the years is to call it the largest and most-highly attended festival in the United States. This is a fact I've often taken issue with as I don't equate quantity with quality. Granted, there has been a large number of quality features to play the fest over the years, including Golden Space Needle (Best Film) winners such as Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985), My Life as a Dog (1987), Trainspotting (1996), Run Lola Run (1999), Whale Rider (2003) and even recent Best Director winner, Michel Hazanavicius's Oss 117: Nest of Spies in 2006. That said, looking over this year's crop of films I see a lot of films I will be doing my absolute best to see.

Is it a coincidence that NBC Universal's goofy and charming new rom-com "The Five-Year Engagement" is studded with actors from its Thursday-night lineup? Even "30 Rock" boss Jack Donaghy couldn't come up with a better plan.
Emily Blunt and Jason Segel are the stars, of course, as you can see from the ads featuring their enormous(ly lovely) faces on billboards, buses, and bus stops everywhere. Over the course of the movie's 124 minutes, viewers soon find themselves treated to appearances by some of the funniest young actors on the scene.
Alison Brie ("Community") is adorable as Suzie, the little sister of Violet (Blunt). Brie has a sweet British accent and, after a rather boozy rehearsal dinner, hooks up with Alex (Chris Pratt, of "Parks and Rec"), who is Tom (Segel)'s slacker best friend. It's a match made in bizarro land, but somehow it works., and Violet's little sister beats her...

New York — Ten years ago, a misunderstanding at a Memorial Day neighborhood cookout turned into a bloody night of gunfire.
Neighbors told police they thought a man named Danny Williams had gotten into the barbecue brawl with two men who were later shot. One died, the other was seriously injured. But police could find no trace of Williams, then a 25-year-old parolee known as D-Knife.
The trail went cold.
Enter John Walsh and his long-running television show "America's Most Wanted." Walsh's team aired an episode on the shooting twice in 2009 and plastered Williams' face on the show's website.
On July 19, 2010, Williams was captured and arrested by detectives with the New York Police Department's fugitive task force using fingerprints. He was found guilty of murder and sentenced earlier this year to 50 years in prison.

Friends with Kids
Written by Jennifer Westfeldt
Directed by Jennifer Westfeldt
USA, 2011
There’s nothing more irritating than a pretender. Jennifer Westfeldt’s second feature as writer-director, over a decade after Kissing Jessica Stein, wants so badly to be construed as a transgressive anti-rom-com that subverts the norms of screen romance and family dynamics that it’s doubly disappointing when it becomes clear early on that Friends With Kids is essentially a meet-cute drawn out to 107 minutes, with only minor complications. Like child-rearing.
Westfeldt and Adam Scott sat as Julie and Jason, two old friends whose other friends (Kristen Wiig, Jon Hamm, Chris O’Dowd, and Maya Rudolph) are married couple with kids, experiencing varying degrees of strain. They both want kids themselves, but don’t envy what they see as the trap of marriage, and the declining sense of romance and happiness that seems to them to be a contractual obligation.

<< continued from "March Preview (Part 1): 'John Carter,' 'Lorax,' '21 Jump Street' & More"While the first few weeks of March bring potential hits like The Lorax, John Carter and 21 Jump Street, the most anticipated movie of the month doesn't reach theaters until March 23. The Hunger Games is easily the most-anticipated book-to-movie adaptation since Twilight, and it's possible that it has even more box office potential than the extraordinarily popular teen vampire series. Similar to Twilight, The Hunger Games is based on the first in a series of young adult novels that features a female protagonist entangled in a love triangle. While the romance is the main focus of the Twilight series, though, in The Hunger Games it's merely a component of a broader story that centers around teens fighting to the death in the post-apocalyptic equivalent of Survivor. As a result, the movie should have much more...

Emmerdale star Adam Thomas has revealed that there are bigger storylines on the way for his character Adam Barton in the New Year. The actor, who has been playing the role since 2009, said that he is looking forward to being challenged by the material ahead. Adam's main plotline in 2011 saw him cheat on girlfriend Mia Macey (Sapphire Elia) with her mother Ella (Corrinne Wicks), sparking fury from Home Farm businessman Declan (Jason Merrells). Asked whether Adam has any more romance ahead, Thomas told Take It Easy: "Not at the moment, no. I think he's had his fair share, to be honest. His main priority is looking after his family and helping his dad out on the farm. "After his affair with Ella, I think he's grown up a bit (more)...

As a child I wasn't allowed much Christmas viewing. But an enthralling sci-fi classic slipped the net
For me, Christmas has been made that touch more Christmassy in recent years thanks to the bunching together of awards ceremonies at the start of the new year. I recently joined Bafta, whose awards are in February, nipping in before the Oscars. Now the London Critics' Circle film awards are on 19 January, nipping in before the Baftas. What this means is that every day the postman rings with another batch of presents: super-special private "screener" discs of Hollywood films, not yet released on DVD, from companies wanting me to vote for them.
Now, it doesn't matter if I've seen them: I still can't help squeaking with excitement. Wow: Carnage! Starring Kate Winslet! My own private DVD! Of course, they all come with a stern piracy warning never to let them out of your sight.

We hold in our hands the covers for DC Comics this February. As a child of four can plainly see, these comics have been hermetically sealed in a Cgc 9.9 slab, and they’ve been kept in a #2 mayonnaise jar under a giant stack of returned copies of Holy Terror since noon today.
What do we have worth noting? The new look of Darkseid, and we’re far enough into the new 52 books that it’s time for Batman to start crossing over in all of them. Plus Mara Jade, the red-haired assassin who fell in love with her blond-haired man she was sent to kill– oh, I’m sorry, that’s from Star Wars. This is Mera in a jade outfit. Our mistake.
Shall we? Surely!
As usual, spoilers may lurk beyond this point.

The Last House on the Left's Dennis Iliadis has signed on to direct Adam Alieca's paranormal thriller Home. Variety reports that Iladis is to helm the project from Gk Films and Appian Way, which is being executive produced by Steven Schneider (Paranormal Activity).
Home was initially plannned to be directed by Wes Craven. The film tells the story of "a man under house arrest at the home of his dead father. When mysterious things begin to happen, the man must learn whether he is going mad or if he's actually being haunted by his father's ghost."
I am a fan of paranormal thrillers and enjoyed Last House by Iliadis. The story sounds pretty cool, what are your thoughts?...

Chicago – Musical theater takes on the burden or blessing of twice the challenge as songless theater. To earn widespread acclaim and timeless durability, a show will seamlessly balance song and story in perfect harmony. The two living, breathing creatures must symbiotically advance each other. If one’s stronger, one suffocates the other and both die.
Play Rating: 3.5/5.0
That’s the case with the world premiere of “For the Boys” at the Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire, Ill., which is running now through Oct. 16, 2011. When separated, both components are equally strong. But when melded, that’s when the amalgamation reveals its weakness. Imagine watching one of the Harry Potter films, and just after Harry triumphs in a fierce quidditch match, he confusingly busts out singing “Light My Candle” from the musical “Rent”.
