A “Real Steel” series adaptation is in the early stages of development at Disney Plus, Variety has learned.
The potential series would be based on the 2011 film of the same name, which was itself based on the short story “Steel” by Richard Matheson.
The film took place in the not too distant future in which human boxers have been replaced by giant fighting robots. Hugh Jackman starred as a former boxer who, along with his estranged son, fixes up an old robot they find in a junkyard and turns it into a champion.
As the project is still in the very early stages, no writer is yet attached. That means it is not yet clear if the show would adhere to the events of the original film or take a different direction altogether with new characters.
Shawn Levy, who directed the “Real Steel” film, will executive produce the series via 21 Laps.

Joaquin Rodriguez‘s Curse of the Mayans is a sci-fi thriller that explores the legend and theory of the Mayan tribe’s connection to extraterrestrial life. It’s a story that has been explored in other films, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull comes to mind and for the Indy franchise, it would be a mistake to go that route. Will Curse of the Mayans be any different?
Synopsis:
For eons, the Mayans prophesized that on December 21, 2012 – the end-date of the 5,126-year cycle of the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar – there would be a cataclysmic, earth-shattering event. As it turned out, 2012 wasn’t the end, but the beginning in Curse of the Mayans, a chilling sci-fi thriller set in the dark jungles and unexplored cenotes of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.
In present day, American professor Dr. Alan Green (Steve Wilcox) discovers a manuscript that may hold the keys to the lost Mayan culture.

"I need you to try to get the hell out of that elevator." Atlas Distribution has premiered a trailer for a new drama titled 9/11, telling the story of five people trapped inside an elevator in the World Trade Center's North Tower on 9/11. They work together, never giving up hope, to try and find a way out safely. It's only been 16 years, but I guess we've reached a point where movies can literally use the 9/11 date as their title when telling a story centered around this horrific moment. The ensemble cast of this film includes Charlie Sheen, Whoopi Goldberg, Luis Guzman, Gina Gershon, Wood Harris, Jacqueline Bisset, Olga Fonda and Bruce Davison. It's directed by Martin Guigui, the same guy who made the unofficial Raging Bull sequel The Bronx Bull. The final shot in this trailer is totally crazy, and potentially a spoiler? Watch out. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster...

Curse of the Mayans, also titled Xibalba, is a film which blends horror and sci-fi. A co-production between Lanczyner Films and Three Great Lights Films, this title involves a team of archaeologists, in search of Mayan codecs. They find something more sinister, in the Mayan underworld. The film, from director Joaquin Rodriguez, stars Olga Fonda (Real Steel), Carla Ortiz, Steve Wilcox and Bernardo Peña. Filmed on actual former Mayan settlements, the first trailer for Curse of the Mayans is here. A long synopsis talks of a civil war, on an ancient planet. The survivors fled to Earth. Moving ahead to the present, a group of expert cave divers are in search of a key that can reveal more of the Mayan culture. One diver steals a priceless artifact, which summons a second alien invasion. No one can accuse the filmmakers of Curse of the Mayans of being unambitious. The film...

The Vampire Diaries didn’t make us wait long to see how the whole expelling Katherine (Nina Dobrev) from Elena’s (also Dobrev) body scenario would play out, but that doesn’t mean fans got everything they wanted out of it. Even though Dobrev is back to finally being a solo-act, her single remaining character isn’t going to be herself for a while. In a desperate final act, Katherine made a play to ensure that the love of her life would remain out of reach for Elena, and anyone else who may think about batting their eyelashes his way.
Katherine proves in her final moments to be the same complex character we’ve become accustomed to over the past five seasons. Her last decisions were both incredibly touching and equally vindictive, securing her place in somewhere presumably more unpleasant than the other side. Even in death, Katherine Pierce will...

Katherine’s jump into Elena’s body in her dying moments worked to alter the group dynamic at Mystic Falls, as their emotional core had now been replaced with someone they all had an antagonistic relationship with. This was further compounded by Damon’s ambush by Dr. Maxfield and the Travelers last week, and his newfound thirst for vampire blood. This week’s episode continues to explore the ramifications of both Katherine’s undetected presence and Damon’s vampire bloodlust, in an enjoyable episode that adds dimension to a secondary character.

Following in the footsteps of his fellow CW star Jensen Ackles, who has directed a few "Supernatural" episodes, Paul Wesley is about to make his directorial debut on "The Vampire Diaries," becoming the series' first actor to helm an episode.
Per Buzzfeed, Wesley will direct Episode 18 of Season 5, airing later this year, and he said the hour is "both nostalgic and suspenseful," adding, "It feels like our world, but something is a bit askew. It feels uneasy. And I respond to that."
Wesley took his time before making this leap. "I had expressed my interest to [executive producer] Julie Plec and the studio early on. They responded positively but also made it clear I had to earn the position if they were to grant it to me. I spent a year shadowing directors, attending meetings, prepping, sitting in the editing room, etc. Even though I have been working in TV for years,...

A preview video for the Feb. 27 episode finds Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Katherine (Nina Dobrev) getting hot and heavy at a hotel, but with Katherine currently in Elena’s body, this hookup is starting to feel a little complicated — not to mention crowded.

Plus, is Katherine’s plan to win back Stefan already starting to work? I’m kind of glad Elena’s not around to see what’s become of her friends.
A school dance, a romantic holiday and an old flame rekindled — what could possibly go wrong? Oh, right, this is The Vampire Diaries, so… everything! The Feb. 6 episode celebrated Valentine’s Day as only The CW’s flagship drama could, including a villainous twist for an already-unstable Salvatore brother.
Damon: Darker Than Ever?
For starters, “bad” doesn’t even begin to describe Damon’s (Ian Somerhalder) new attitude. The blue-eyed monster is completely off his rocker, and he doesn’t give a flying crow who he hurts in achieving his goal. In fact, based on his actions this week — particularly threatening to kill Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) yet again – he’s smoldering dangerously close to the “villain” category.

Bonnie is intrigued with a fellow student named Liv (guest star Penelope Mitchell), who appears to be dabbling in witchcraft, while Tyler (Michael Trevino) starts to worry about Matt’s (Zach Roerig) relationship with Nadia (guest star Olga Fonda).

Plus, is Damon headed to the dark side… again?! No offense to Matt, but this was probably one of Mystic Falls’ worst parties ever.
In case you’re not yet aware, Katherine Pierce (Nina Dobrev) is a life ruiner. Even when she doesn’t have her own body, she still manages to throw a wrench in all that is good and pure in Mystic Falls. Case in point: Damon (Ian Somerhalder) pulled out all the stops to win back Elena on the Jan. 30 episode of The Vampire Diaries – honestly, he was speaking so selflessly, I almost wondered if it was really him — but because Katherine was currently behind the wheel, she had Elena tell him off and walk away.
And to make matters even more complicated, Katherine revealed the real reason she rejected Damon is because she’s got her sights set on Stefan (Paul Wesley)! “He’s my one true love,...

The Vampire Diaries celebrated their 100th episode last night with 500 Years of Solitude, and they knocked it out of the park – until the last five minutes when they made the most predictable move possible. This episode was an opportunity to send Katherine (Nina Dobrev) out on a high note, close this chapter in The Vampire Diaries history, and move forward with a clean slate. Instead, the writers chose in typical melodrama fashion to suck this storyline dry, and then some.
Whether you’re a fan that loathed Katherine or one of the few that loved her, both would have been appeased with the way she looked to be going out.
