Exclusive: Lionsgate just landed a solid thriller for its slate. In competition with other distributors, the company has acquired U.S., Canada and India distribution rights to Retribution, an action thriller from Studiocanal and The Picture Company that stars Liam Neeson. The Nimród Antal-directed film is a remake of the Spanish movie El Desconocido, which received eight Goya Award noms when it was released in Spain in 2015.
The remake also stars Noma Dumezweni, Matthew Modine, Lily Aspell, Jack Champion (a star of the upcoming Avatar sequels), Embeth Davidtz and Arian Moayed. The Picture Company partners Andrew Rona & Alex Heineman produced the film along with Jaume Collet-Sera and Juan Sola.

Lionsgate has acquired the worldwide rights to “The Blackening,” a horror comedy and satire from director Tim Story (“Ride Along”) and writer Tracy Oliver (“Girls Trip”) that world premiered in the Midnight Madness section at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Lionsgate will give “The Blackening” wide theatrical distribution. A release date has not been set. Lionsgate is handling sales at AFM.

Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions nabbed “Somewhere in Queens,” a heartfelt comedy from writer-director Ray Romano.

Last month, we started to hear rumblings that three more Strangers movies were in the works, with Renny Harlin (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master) directing at least the first of the three. That has now officially been confirmed, as Lionsgate has sent out an announcement that they are moving forward with what’s being called a “Strangers remake trilogy”! Suretone Pictures and Lionsgate are co-funding the adventure/horror film Creepers, based on the bestselling book of the same name by David Morrell. The movie is set to shoot on July 25 under the direction of Marc Klasfeld.
Morrell is renowned for First Blood and other books which were adapted into the films that make up the Sylvester Stallone Rambo franchise.
Creepers is the story of a group of young urban explorers who plan to investigate an old, boarded up, seemingly abandoned hotel, only to encounter danger at every turn in the form of a competing group of hostile urban explorers seeking to find a legendary hidden treasure as well as a supernatural being who wreaks havoc on all.
