The Leader, the upcoming biopic about the Heaven’s Gate cult set to star Tim Blake Nelson and Vera Farmiga, has lured another big-name follower.
The Hollywood Reporter can reveal that Simon Rex has joined the real-life crime drama, unveiled earlier this week at the European Film Market in Berlin, where The Exchange is introducing the project to buyers.
Farmiga and Nelson are set to play Ti and Do, the founders of the UFO cult that in 1997 committed the largest mass suicide to ever take place on American soil. THR understands that Rex — who received critical acclaim for the Cannes-bowing Red Rocket and recently wrapped production on Zoe Kravitz’s directorial debut Pussy Island, one of several upcoming roles — will play a key devotee of the religion who faces devastating consequences when he falls in love with a fellow cult member.

You’ve probably never heard of “Pbc.” For accountants, Pbc is a common acronym for “Provided by Client.” Also for accountants: FloQast software. And, in what seems like the ultimate bad idea for target-demo marketing, “Pbc” is a branded-content comedy series about accounting that’s produced by FloQast Studios.
But here’s the weird part: “Pbc” is not bad. Its supporting cast includes Danny Trejo (“Machete”), Kate Flannery (“The Office”), and Pete Gardner (“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”). It just added Cheri Oteri (“Saturday Night Live”) and Neil Flynn(“Scrubs”). You probably wouldn’t know the series’ leads, Jessica Sarah Flaum and Christian A. Pierce, but they’re talented and have a total Jim-and-Pam thing going on.
If you want to check it out, Season 2 is now streaming (timed by FloQast to give accountants some much-need levity ahead of the busy accounting season). “Pbc” is not the next big Nielsen hit; for one thing,...

The content that has become available through the paid streaming subscription service YouTube Red has kicked into high gear in 2016, with original movies and TV shows flooding the platform. The latest of these – The Thinning – is released on the service on October 12th 2016, and a new trailer has been released in advance of that debut.
Written and directed by Michael J. Gallagher (Interns), and co-written by Steve Greene (Puppet Cop), this science-fiction horror film focuses on a version of the future in which authorities are taking drastic action as part of an effort to manage population control. Eligibility for continued survival is determined by the administration of a High School aptitude test – and those that fail are disposed of. Evidently, there is something of a student revolt as teenagers attempt to take on the system and save their own lives.

"Are you ready for test day?" YouTube Red has unveiled the first trailer for a post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller titled The Thinning, from writer/director Michael J. Gallagher. Set in the future, the story focuses on a high school aptitude test that is used to manage the population. Two students, played by Logan Paul and Peyton List, discover the test isn't what it seems and may actually be covering up a bigger conspiracy. This sounds kind of like Logan's Run, but revised to a high school level "aptitude test". The full cast includes Lia Marie Johnson, Calum Worthy, Matthew Glave, Michael Traynor and Ryan Newman. This looks like a mix of Hunger Games and a bunch of other much better sci-fi, but that may be why it's direct to VOD. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Michael J. Gallagher's The Thinning, direct from YouTube: YouTube's The Thinning takes place in...

Legendary Pictures has unveiled its first look at The Thinning, a dystopian feature film originally announced in November 2015. The Thinning, starring Vine megastar Logan Paul and directed by Michael Gallagher of the TotallySketch channel, was picked up by YouTube in August and represents Red’s first-ever feature length thriller.
In the teaser, which features interviews with Paul and co-star Peyton List (of Disney Channel fame), the plot for The Thinning is revealed to follow a similar formula that has made franchises like The Hunger Games and Divergent into massive hits. “The world is dealing with a big population crisis,” Paul explains, where high school students have to take a test in order to survive. “My character finds out that the whole system is hiding something bigger.”

One of the most exciting recent developments in entertainment has been the rise of the YouTube Star – emerging artists who are creating their own content, determining how and when it is distributed to their audience, and being compensated for their work.
That makes YouTube stars great messengers to encourage youth to use their creative talents, get them thinking about the relationship between creative ownership and their own careers, and communicate that a career in the creative industries is a viable option.
Recently, CreativeFuture launched the Contribute to Creativity VidCon Video Contest. Working with Maker Studios, they are giving aspiring artists the opportunity to submit short videos to win a trip to VidCon. Top YouTube stars the Fung Bros, Michael Gallagher, Steve-o & Sam Macaroni, and Taryn Southern have partnered with them calling for entries in their own unique voices and videos.
CreativeFuture’s basic tenet is that creativity has value and that the next generation of artists should have the chance to showcase their talent and be compensated for their work.
The judges panel is formed by creative industry veterans and rising stars, including Ruth Vitale (CreativeFuture’s CEO), Tobin Armbrust ("Begin Again," "Rush," "The Way Back"); Alec Berg ("Seinfeld," "Curb Your Enthusiam," "Silicon Valley");Marty Bowen ("Twilight" Saga, "The Fault in Our Stars," "Maze Runner"); Arturo Castro ("Broad City"); Wyck Godfrey ("Twilight" Saga, "The Fault in Our Stars," "Maze Runner");Kasi Lemmons ("Silence of the Lambs," "Candyman," "Eve’s Bayou"); Franklin Leonard ("The Black List");Rena Ronson (United Talent Agency); Kurt Sutter ("Sons of Anarchy," "Bastard Executioner"); and Ryan Turek (Blumhouse Productions).
The contest runs from June 8 to June 23. The Grand Prize Winner will receive a $1000 cash prize and an all-expense paid trip with a guest to attend VidCon 2015 in Anaheim, California, in July.

Cinemand, which is led by YouTube star Michael Gallagher, created the video to hype the third installment of the Insidious franchise, which will arrive in theaters on June 5th. And you thought Tiny Tim’s original rendition of “Tiptoe Through The Tulips” was horrifying?
Birthed from a place of nightmares, “Tiptoe Through The Tulips” captivated modern horror audiences when Rose Byrne heard the eerie track echoing through her home in the first Insidious. A small child runs from room to room, Rose follows, and we get a usual jump scare – but the addition of Tiny Tim’s high-pitched serenading adds a level of unsettling dread. It’s a song that’s otherwise innocent, yet when paired with the right circumstance, the inner hellishness of Tiny Tim’s true satanic nature is unlocked and revealed to the world.
Fine – Tiny Tim isn’t a demon-loving satanist, but dammit that man is creepy!
Well, here we are five years and two Insidious films later, and that damn song is still threatening to haunt our dreams – this time in support of the...

Fans of the Insidious films have likely never listened to "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" quite the same way since following Josh Lambert into the fire-face demon's lair and hearing the classic song bouncing off the walls. Last October, we shared audio of indie rock band Cherry Glazerr's cover of the famous song, and now Cinemand and Focus Features have teamed up to make a music video of the band's chilling cover. The video tells a story all its own, and it debuted today on Totally Sketch.
The "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" music video was directed by Michael Gallagher and comes from Cinemand, which was founded by Gallagher (”Smiley”), Jana Winternitz (”urFRENZ”), and Michael Wormser (”Smiley”).
"In a rare blending of classic tune, hot new movie, and next-gen talent, Cinemand tapped top stars from YouTube and Vine (Meg Deangelis, Eric Ochoa, Brittany Furlan, and Christian DelGrosso) to act in the video.

Fox News Sunday's Chris Wallace and radio host Mike Gallagher have apologized to Kelly Clarkson after body shaming her, following a public backlash and a call for apology by colleague Greta Van Susteren. Wallace said Clarkson "could stay off the deep dish pizza for a little while." "I sincerely apologize to Kelly Clarkson for my offensive comment," the Fox News Sunday host said in a statement to E! What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Just a month after Kelly Clarkson called out British TV personality Katie Hopkins for criticizing her appearance on social media, Fox News' Chris Wallace is now coming under fire for mocking the singer's appearance during an interview on The Mike Gallagher Show on Friday. The news anchor and radio host had a back-and-forth about Clarkson's weight during the radio show. "Listen, don't fat shame me," Gallagher reportedly told Wallace. "You do a lot of fat shaming. That's the new phrase now. Fat shaming. Have you seen Kelly Clarkson? You know the singer, Kelly Clarkson? Holy cow, did she blow up.

Can we stop with the body shaming of Kelly Clarkson? Fox News anchor Chris Wallace and radio host Mike Gallagher recently mocked the 32-year-old pop star over her weight, in comments made on the latter's syndicated show. Clarkson, who gave birth to her first child more than nine months ago and who has often been criticized over her figure, has not responded to them. Meanwhile, Fox News host Greta Van Susteren has come to her defense. "Listen, don't fat shame me. You do a lot of fat shaming. That's the new phrase now. Fox News host Greta Van Susteren has called on colleague Chris Wallace to apologize for making comments about singer Kelly Clarkson's weight.
Wallace's comment came during a radio appearance Friday on The Mike Gallagher Show, in which the two began joking about Gallagher's weight. And then with one comment, Gallagher, 54, brought up Clarkson, 32.

Seriously? In an uncalled for, extremely cruel moment, Fox anchor Chris Wallace fat-shamed Kelly Clarkson during a radio interview on Friday, April 4. Instead of talking politics, the Fox News Sunday host began discussing the singer's weight on The Mike Gallagher Show. Completely off topic, the men began to randomly discuss Little Caesar's bacon-wrapped crust pizza and fat-shaming. Imagine a time, 1993. Super heroes ran the comics with their magnificent, pumped up anatomy, the Sega genesis battled the Nes with its “blast processing”, and Michael Gallagher was contacted by Daryl Edelman to write a sonic comic for Archie. As was described to him by Edelman, Sonic is a wisecracking blue hedgehog who battles Dr. Ivo Robotnik, which is evident on the cover of the premier Issue #0. This cover is of a lower quality compared to the art inside this issue, but has the charm of a brand new series. Robotnik’s eyes are white on the cover and the page 1 full-page art, introducing the cast. All of the character art definitely reminds readers of Sega concept art for the Sonic the Hedgehog series.

Director: Michael J. Gallagher. Review: Adam Wing. Stop me if you've heard this one. We open in a suburban household, where a hot babysitter is having a conversation with the girl she's looking after. The young damsel is on the internet, chatting to strangers online. They talk about the dangers of chat rooms and the pitfalls of cyber-stalking. The young girl tries to scare the hot babysitter with a myth about a masked man who preys on unsuspecting users. After a few obligatory ass shots, the babysitter is butchered to death by a monster called Smiley, so called because he stitched his own eyes shut before carving his mouth into a smile. Nice. Then we cut to the opening titles. With Smiley, director Michael J. Gallagher isn't interested in bringing anything new to the table. He takes an attractive theme, both intriguing and current, and largely ignores it in favour...

After a number of years spent sifting through independently-produced horror movies of every size, shape, quality, and nationality, one starts to notice the little intangibles. Things like intent, effort, and passion -- and, on the other hand, stuff like laziness, cynicism, and outright plagiarism. One of the recent "discoveries" on my horror rounds was an American indie called Smiley that, oddly enough for such a tiny film, earned itself a small theatrical run a few months back, probably because the sales agent knew what s/he was doing. Michael J. Gallagher's monumentally uneventful slasher flick Smiley comfortably joins the ranks of films like Chain Letter, Blood Creek, and Creature: low-rent horror flicks that play theaters only so the DVD sales sheets can legally say "fresh off a successful theatrical run!"

In Smiley, the world of internet trolls, urban legends, and crazed killers all come together in a crazed stew. We chatted with writer and first time director Michael Gallagher about researching Smiley, internet trolls, and death threats.
Where did the idea for Smiley come from?
It came from the launch of websites that allow you to video chat anonymously with strangers on the internet - like ChatRoulette and Omegle. We saw that and thought it would be the perfect launching pad for a new urban legend. It’s so creepy that people in thereal world want to talk to people they don’t know and put out so much personal information that it just lent itself to a horror film.
Did you spend a lot of time on ChatRoulette-type websites for research?
