A villainous James Franco gets what’s coming to him in the new trailer for Lionsgate’s upcoming science-fiction thriller “Kin,” starring Jack Reynor, Myles Truitt, Zoe Kravitz, and Dennis Quaid.
Truitt portrays the younger adopted brother of a recently released ex-con, played by Reynor, and the object of pursuit by Franco’s grinning villain. The biggest deal to emerge during the Toronto International Film Festival (Tiff) came together before the event started, which says a lot about the acquisitions scene these days.
Distributors need no reminding of the treacherous terrain they occupy. Too many films continue to compete for a slice of the North American box office in a traditionally theatrical manner, only to fall short of expectations in an increasingly fractured marketplace bloated with consumer choice.
Buyers invest early in the best prospects and so Focus Features took worldwide rights off the table to Paul Thomas Anderson’s upcoming 1950s London haute couture drama to star Daniel Day-Lewis in a deal reportedly valued at $35m.
CAA handled that one on behalf of the filmmakers. Similarly, Wme Global and Good Universe touted an action-thriller package called Kin ahead of the festival and Lionsgate pounced on worldwide rights for what was understood to be in the mid-to-high $20m range.

2011's R-rated raunchy-sports-comedy-with-a-heart-of-gold Goon is the latest comedy to be getting a sequel. And while law of averages are not in its favor when it comes to comedy sequels, Seann William Scott, Jay Baruchel, Liev Schreiber and Alison Pill are all set to return and throw around hockey pucks as much as they do certain four-letter words in Goon: Last of the Enforcers. Joining them inside the ice rink, however, is Elisha Cuthbert. The "24" and Girl Next Door star joins the movie to play Pill's outlandish sister. Pill plays Eva, the love interest to rising hockey star Doug "The Thug" Glatt (Scott). This new movie finds Doug and his team, Halifax Highlanders, working with a variety of new players during a pro lockout. So it looks like Cutherbert isn't the only newbie in the Goon universe, and with production to begin on June 21 in Toronto under producers David Gross, Jesse Shapira and Jeff Arkuss,...

Now this is good news. THR is reporting that the sequel to Goon, the awesome cult hockey movie starring Seann William Scott, will be directed by actor Jay Baruchel, making his directorial debut with this film. Baruchel is a major proponent behind the entire film, as he's co-writing the screenplay with Jesse Chabot, and also starring again as Seann William Scott's character's friend Pat. Of course they've got Seann William Scott back as violent hockey player Doug "The Thug" Glatt and they're already gearing up to start filming in June in Toronto. I've got a good feeling about this, it all sounds quite promising, especially with Baruchel. It was also revealed the title of this follow-up is Goon: Last of the Enforcers. Bring on the hockey fights. The film will be produced by David Gross, Jesse Shapira, and Jeff Arkuss of No Trace Camping and André Rouleau of Caramel Films.

Donoghue is adapting her own novel, which tells the story from the perspective of a five-year-old boy, Jack, who is being held captive in a small room along with his mother.

Joan Allen, William H Macy and Jacob Tremblay have been added to the cast of Room, Element Pictures and No Trace Camping’s adaptation of Emma Donoghue’s 2010 bestseller that Lenny Abrahamson is directing. Brie Larson stars in the pic, for which A24 acquired U.S. right at Cannes this year. Shooting is underway at Pinewood Studios and on location in Toronto.
Larson stars as Ma, a woman kidnapped as a teenager who has been held captive for years in a tiny room where she lives with her 5-year-old son Jack. To the boy, it’s the only home he’s ever known. But as Jack’s curiosity is building alongside Ma’s own desperation, she knows that room cannot contain either indefinitely. Donoghue adapted the script from her book, itself partially inspired by the case of Austrian woman Elisabeth Fritzl, who escaped from a basement in 2008 after a 24-year...

What If gives a slightly different spin on romantic comedies, and more importantly, it gives Zoe Kazan a chance to get the exposure she deserves.
More than just your typical rom-com, What If spins the “friendship” question into new nooks and crannies of the relationship world, and does so from the perspective of some excessively quirky characters. Daniel Radcliffe, who to me has had varying levels of success attempting a wide array of characters, looks to have this role nailed down… possibly because there is a bit of Harry Potter about Wallace.
The new clip below expands on the “friendship bargain” you get in the trailer above, and is a pretty clever moment for the film.
Check it out, and make sure you have August 8th on your calendar.

After creating a sensation on YouTube with its viral marketing videos, the novel Average American Male has been picked up by Fox Atomic with Betty Thomas on board to produce with an eye to direct.
Adapting the book is its author Chad Kultgen, a former Weekly World News writer.
"Average"'s unnamed narrator is a man in his late 20s who hangs out with his friends and girlfriend, plays video games and holds an insignificant job. He reveals to readers his racy thoughts on his girlfriend, watching porn, his disgust with people in general and that he should either live life alone or bite the marriage bullet.
Interest in "Average" sparked after its publisher Harper Perennial, a division of HarperCollins, produced three one-minute videos for YouTube after having problems getting press for the novel. The viral videos were an immediate hit with more than 1 million views, pushing book sales.
Fox Atomic executive Jeff Arkuss will oversee the project with president of production Debbie Liebling.

Fox Atomic has acquired Nick Kurzon's comedy pitch Spending My Inheritance for mid-six figures.
The story centers on a twenty-something slacker enjoying life beyond his means who reluctantly moves home only to find his once-frugal father living life to the fullest and spending the money his son had counted on inheriting.
Comedy scribe Scot Armstrong, whose credits include "Starsky & Hutch," Old School and the upcoming Ben Stiller starrer The Heartbreak Kid, and Ravi Nandan are producing Inheritance through their American Work shingle.
"Nick is a writer we've wanted to work with for a long time," Nandan said. "When he pitched us this idea, it seemed very timely and the perfect way to pair up a veteran comedy actor with an up-and-coming comedian."
Fox Atomic's Debbie Liebling and Jeff Arkuss brought the project into the youth-centric label of 20th Century Fox.
Kurzon recently sold the pitch On the Clock to Warner Bros. Pictures, with Shawn Levy attached to direct. He also sold his first spec, Big Dawg, to Warners, which Plan B is producing.

Fox Filmed Entertainment's new youth-skewing genre division has struck its first deal. The as-yet-unnamed label bought actress-scribe Mindy Kaling's untitled sorority pitch for six figures. Described as in the vein of Revenge of the Nerds and Animal House but with a female twist, the comedy will be produced by 3 Arts Entertainment's Howard Klein, executive producer of NBC's The Office. Kaling is a writer and recurring cast member on Office. Lawrence Grey and Jeff Arkuss will oversee the project for the new division, which was created in December under the leadership of Fox Searchlight president Peter Rice. At the time of the label's formation, a company source said projects likely would fall in the $20 million-$40 million range (HR 12/20).
