Cannes grapples with the implications of Netflix’s arrival on the Croisette.
Us streaming giant Netflix continued its gradual integration into the fabric of Cannes on Thursday with the inclusion by Directors’ Fortnight of its recent acquisition Bushwick (pictured, top) in the line-up of its 49th edition.
Its selection followed announcement last week that two other Netflix titles - Okja and The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) – would compete for the Palme d’Or in the Official Selection.
But this Cannes hat-trick does not mean the streaming giant’s place is assured in the eco-system of this bastion of cinema and the theatrical experience.
When quizzed about Netflix’s impact on Directors’ Fortnight and the wider Cannes ecosystem, artistic director Edouard Waintrop admitted it was a complex issue.
“It’s a complicated question and one for which I’m not particularly well-prepared. It’s a new issue on different fronts, by which I...

The streaming giant has revealed eight Cannes acquisitions a day after it announced its first Indian original.
Svod goliath Netflix has picked up worldwide rights to Houda Benyamina’s well-received French thriller Divines [pictured].
Described by Screen’s critic as a “tough, feisty disaffected youth drama”, the film stars Oulaya Amamra as a young woman who descends into a life of crime. It marks the first feature from French director Houda Benyamina and was produced by Marc-Benoît Créancier.
Divines will debut on Netflix worldwide in 2017, excluding France where it won’t appear until 2019 due to the territory’s windowing rules.
The film premiered in Cannes Directors’ Fortnight – winning the Camera d’Or for best directorial debut - and is amongst a host of acquisitions that Netflix has revealed following the festival.
Also on the list is Kleber Mendonca Filho’s competition title Aquarius, which Netflix has taken for the UK, North America, Asia, Australia...

The Together Project was directed by Solveig Anspach, who died last August.
Afghan fantasy drama Wolf And Sheep has picked up the Art Cinema Award at the 48th Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes.
Making Of… Wolf And Sheep
It marks the completion of a six-year journey with Cannes for Afghan director Shahrbanoo Sadat, who was 20 when selected as the youngest participant of the festival’s Cinefondation Residency, where she began to develop this debut in 2010.
Wolf And Sheep follows a group of Afghan shepherd boys and girls living in a remote village, where folklore helps explain the world’s mysteries.
Starring largely non-professional actors, Wolf And Sheep was shot in Tajikistan because it was too dangerous for the crew to shoot in Afghanistan.
The Denmark-France-Sweden-Afghanistan co-production is produced by Katja Adomeit and is being sold by Alpha Violet.
Although considered a non-competitive section, the film was selected for the sponsored prize over titles such as Pablo Larrain’s [link...

Exclusive: Mustang producer CG Cinema and Son Of Saul distributor Ad Vitam launch Alma Cinema.
Oscar-nominated producer Charles Gillibert (Mustang) is joining forces with French distributor Ad Vitam to launch independent sales company Alma Cinema.
The partners have brought in sales and acquisition executive Sara May, formerly of TF1 and Embankment Films, to head up the new structure, which aims to handle some dozen titles a year.
“It will be in the vein of what the Americans and Brits call a ‘one-stop shop’ company, seeking out, financing and selling films under the same roof,” said May.
“Our aim is to create a structure offering producers support from the financing stage right through to its delivery, even if we don’t necessarily end up being involved in every stage.”
May will also be free to acquire films and projects unrelated to either CG Cinema and Ad Vitam’s activities for world sales.
