‘The Art of Marvel Studios' What If...?, Volume 1, is a new Abrams’ official art book written by Paul Davies, showcasing director Bryan Andrews, Emmy-nominated Disney+ TV series “What If…?”, “that questions, revisits and twists classic moments”, from the ‘Marvel Cinematic Universe’, available August 27, 2024:
“…with each story, ‘The Watcher’ acts as a guide through these various timelines and raises such questions as: What if ‘Ultron’ successfully defeated the ‘Avengers’ and acquired the ‘Infinity Stones’?
“What if ‘Peggy Carter’ was injected with ‘Super Soldier Serum’ instead of ‘Steve Rogers’? What if ‘T'Challa’ became ‘Star-Lord’?
“Filled with striking imagery and a bold color palette, these timelines are brought to life in an animation style that is complementary to the look and feel of the ‘MCU’ …

Marvel Studios celebrated the fourth of April with a post that seemed to double as a stealth "Fantastic Four" tease this week. On Thursday, the X account representing all things Marvel Cinematic Universe shared an illustration alongside four fire emojis. The artwork by Marvel Studios' Head of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding features The Human Torch, aka Johnny Storm, soaring through the sky above a white retro-futuristic metropolis skyline.
Storm looks at the viewers with an ultra-bright smile, and the trail of flames behind him makes the shape of the team's 4 logo. "Happy 4-4 Day!" a font emblazoned above him says. More interesting than the striking poster, though, is the link included in the tweet. Follow it, and you'll end up on a new page of the Marvel website titled "Future Foundation," which features a reading list of 4 classic "Fantastic Four" comics and one more recent title. The caption on the page reads "Delegates,...

The beauty of “X-Men ’97” (currently streaming on Disney+) is that it’s more than just a nostalgia trip — it’s a very timely continuation of “X-Men: The Animated Series” that addresses today’s more complicated world while staying true to the spirit of the original. There’s a greater celebration of queer diversity (Morph has been redesigned as a non-binary shapeshifter) but also an accelerated powder keg of hate, which makes the mutants’ enemies much more formidable. This calls for drastic action, which is why the torch has been passed to former arch nemesis Magneto (Matthew Waterson) to lead the X-Men following the loss of Professor Xavier.
The 10-episode animated series also represents Marvel’s first “X-Men” project since regaining the rights from Fox and serves as a prelude to the franchise joining the MCU in this summer’s lone Marvel movie, “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Yet it was vital...

The fantastic book "MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios" has been out for a bit now and we're still finding fascinating tidbits and details within those pages. If you haven't already, I highly recommend you pick up a copy for yourself because as much fun as it is to single out little fun details, reading them in context against the backdrop of just how Marvel Studios became the powerhouse they are is even more fulfilling.

The design of The Lizard in The Amazing Spider-Man proved to be somewhat unpopular, so when it was revealed that the character would be returning for Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans had hoped that Marvel would give the villain a comic-accurate redesign.
As we know, The Lizard looked pretty much the same in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Marvel Studios’ Head of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding explained why in Spider-Man: No Way Home – The Art of the Movie (via ComicBookMovie.com). “We’re looking to pull a character from another film and have this audience believe it’s that same character,” Meinerding said. “If we change it too much, if we’re changing bone structure, it doesn’t feel like it’s the character from that other movie, and we’ve lost the magic of The Multiverse.“

Marvel Studios made hundreds of fans quite — um — animated as it kicked off its very first panel centered on a growing slate of animated content.
The presentation and expansion comes after the studio’s inaugural series, What If…?, garnered three Emmy-nominations. The response to the show saw Marvel green light season two and announce last year series such as Spider-Man: Freshman Year, a revival of 1990s cartoon X-Men ’97, and a shorts series, I Am Groot. All those series were showcased during the panel, eliciting oohs and aahs from the gleeful faithful.
“When we did the first season of What If…?, we realized we wanted to do more,” said Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios’ head of streaming, television and animation. The longtime Marvel exec, who began in the studio’s live-action division, said that growing up, animation was his gateway to cinema and comic book.

Marvel surprised fans on Friday with an exclusive first look at Spider-Man: Freshman Year, and a handful of their upcoming animated series, at a panel at Comic Con Friday, hosted by comedian Paul F. Tompkins, which included Marvel Studios head of streaming, television and animation Brad Minderbaum and head of visual development Ryan Meinerding and the creators of their upcoming animated series.
Jeff Trammell, writer and executive producer of Freshman Year teased the audience with concept art of Peter Parker, his suits, and allies like Harry Osborn, Doctor Strange and Daredevil, who will be voiced by Charlie Cox from the Netflix Marvel series. The series takes place before the characters’ introduction in the current MCU in Captain America: Civil War. “I don’t want to spoil anything, but expect the unexpected,” teased Trammell before he showed concept art of Norman Osborn, who will be Peter’s mentor in the series.

Through the first four episodes of “What If…?,” the animated anthology has managed to turn the MCU on its head with inspired alternative narratives while embracing a graphic style that elevates the characters and environments.
What if Peggy Carter (Haley Atwell) became the first Captain America through the lens of World War II expressionism? What if T’Challa/Black Panther (the late Chadwick Boseman) became Star Lord in a Guardians universe that reflects his personality? What if Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) turned detective in a film noir procedural? And what if Doctor Strange lost his heart instead of his hands in a surreal nightmare?
“We have the advantage that people have seen these places before, and so we have a lot of latitude and can do all sorts of things and they will get it,” said production designer Paul Lasaine. “So they see that room in the Captain America world,...

What if Peggy Carter became the first Captain America to battle the Nazis and Hydra? What if Black Panther became Star Lord and fought The Collector? And what if Nick Fury was forced to team up with Loki to solve the murders of several would-be Avengers? All of those hypothetical questions are brought to life in the initial three episodes of “What If…?,” Marvel’s first animated anthology (currently streaming on Disney+), which turns the MCU on its head — “Twilight Zone” style — with 10 wild alternate timelines in Season 1, narrated by Jeffrey Wright’s omniscient Watcher.

The stories of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame are dizzyingly complex, with the writers having to keep track of numerous intersecting events, parallel timelines and an enormous cast of heroes. Since Endgame‘s release, though, we’ve gotten a peek behind the curtains of their creative process, seeing a few deleted and extended scenes and a bunch of interesting concept art teasing ideas that didn’t make it into the movie.
Now, artist Ryan Meinerding has released a new image showing Black Widow and Hawkeye about to square off against Thanos on Vormir. This is described as an image he was asked to make “to help the filmmakers visualize and evaluate the moment.”

Chadwick Boseman will always be remembered most for playing the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Black Panther, and understandably so. But let’s not forget that the 43 year-old also made a real effort to pick roles that challenged him as an actor while also staying true to his beliefs and principles.
Boseman only had the chance to give us fifteen movies before his tragic death from colon cancer, but he’d already proven himself an expert at playing multi-faceted characters, tackling Jackie Robinson in biopic 42, starring as music industry legend James Brown in Get On Up and portraying civil rights activist and Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall in Marshall.
All those roles, and more, showcased what an incredible talent he was, and ever since he passed away, tons of tributes have been pouring out from all corners of the web. Be it in the form of videos, poems, art and more,...

Shortly before the all-out battle scene in Avengers: Endgame, Marvel’s beloved trio – namely Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor Odinson – squared off against Thanos in an attempt to course-correct the universe.
It was the first time that all three heroes dueled against the Mad Titan simultaneously, and what a spectacle it was, leading to the crowd-pleasing moment when Cap summoned Mjnolir and rained lightning down upon the helpless Thanos.
But it was a short-lived victory, given Josh Brolin’s purple tyrant was able to recover and, in a particularly devastating scene, break the very shield on which Steve Rogers built a legacy. Had things panned out differently, Avengers: Endgame would have seen Thanos literally punch through Cap’s shield, as depicted by new artwork shared by Ryan Meinerding on Instagram.

After losing his fight to Thanos in the opening minutes of Avengers: Infinity War, Hulk chose to sit out the rest of the film, leaving Bruce Banner to man the Hulkbuster during the climactic Battle of Wakanda.
However, as co-writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely recently explained in an interview with Vanity Fair, the original plan was for the Jade Giant to come bursting out of the suit during the fight, marking the arrival of Smart Hulk one year before the release of Avengers: Endgame.
Ultimately, this development was saved for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ latest outing, but if you’d like a better idea of how Hulk’s Infinity War comeback might’ve looked, then feast your eyes on this recently surfaced concept art, credited to Ryan Meinerding.

In Avengers: Endgame, it was ultimately Hulk who had the honor of wearing the Infinity Gauntlet and undoing the genocide of last year’s Infinity War with a snap of his fingers. This heroic action, however, came with a price, as Bruce Banner’s arm was injured severely and perhaps permanently.
In the new book Avengers: Endgame – The Art of the Movie, co-director Joe Russo reflects on this moment, explaining that the damage suffered by Hulk served to emphasize the power of the previous character to use all the Infinity Stones:
“We know how powerful Thanos is by his quick defeat of the Hulk in Infinity War, so this is an incredibly painful experience, to put on the gauntlet that controls the universe. It permanently damages the most powerful beings and some of the most powerful creatures in these movies, and very few people can actually put that on and survive.

Avengers: Endgame will forever be remembered as a monumental achievement in blockbuster filmmaking, with the sequel bringing us a crowd-pleasing, effects-driven superhero epic that brought the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Infinity Saga to a thrilling conclusion and also found itself as the highest-grossing movie in history for its troubles.
But Endgame wasn’t just all about the spectacle, as its story was full of emotional moments that had us saying goodbye to some fan-favorite characters. Of course, the most heartbreaking exit was right at the very end of the third act battle when Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark made the ultimate sacrifice to save the universe.

Avengers: Endgame encapsulates 11 years of the McU, and brings to a close some of the Avenger's journey. The Marvel superheroes grew not only emotionally but their suits changed along with them. Marvel Studios' Head of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding's department was largely responsible for the look and feel of the Marvel Cinematic Universe throughout the last decade, and CineMovie chatted with him about how the suits mirrored the stories, and how their baseline was always the original comics.

Landing the right appearance for Mysterio in “Spider-Man: Far From Home” was one of the biggest priorities for Ryan Meinerding, who works as Marvel Studios’ Head of Visual Development. Meinerding has been working on Marvel films since the McU started with “Iron Man” and is often tasked with bringing traditional comic book costumes to life on the big screen, while keeping them as grounded as possible in the real world. For Mysterio, that meant testing out between 60 and 70 different costumes before landing on the one seen in theaters.
Meinerding recently sat down for a video interview with Marvel Entertainment and shared some amazing concept art for various Mysterio costumes that got cut along the way during the development of “Spider-Man: Far From Home.” One of the biggest challenges in adapting Mysterio for the big screen was what to do with the character’s most identifiable costume element: The helmet. [Editor’s note: The following post contains spoilers for “Spider-Man: Far From Home.”]
While figuring out the big battles with the latest McU additions, Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) and The Elementals, the “Spider-Man: Far From Home” VFX team was stymied by, of all things, “The Peter Tingle.” You know, Aunt May’s (Marisa Tomei) cute description of Peter Parker’s (Tom Holland) innate ability to anticipate imminent danger, commonly known as “Spider-Sense.”
In “Avengers: Infinity War,” for example, we witnessed the hair standing on his arm with the arrival of Thanos. But director Jon Watts and Marvel wanted to explore the super power more creatively in “Far From Home,” especially after the innovative, Oscar-winning, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” offered such boldly graphic animated versions of it.
“‘Into The Spider-Verse’ used that ability to great success and there was definitely a desire to replicate that in a live-action fashion,” said Janek Sirrs, the production visual effects supervisor, “but without retreading familiar...

A couple of billboards for Spider-Man: Far From Home have popped up and as you can see, they seem to reveal the big twist in the story that we all saw coming. Before I get into the details of what that twist is, I’ll let you look at the photo of the billboards to see if you can see what I see… do you see?

Though the God of Thunder went with short hair for last year’s Thor Ragnarok, some newly released Avengers: Infinity War concept art indicates that Chris Hemsworth’s character might’ve already been on the path to growing back his lengthy locks by the time the fight against Thanos kicked off.
Concept illustrator Rodney Fuentebella took to Instagram with an early illustration of Thor rocking his famous eye patch along with a little ponytail. In the caption, Fuentebella explains that he “wanted to go for the wondering warrior look,” though the final design for the film was ultimately crafted by Head of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding. And while we’ve certainly seen more drastic alternatives for how the character could’ve looked in the Russo Brothers’ latest release, it’s still strange to think that the ongoing saga that is Thor’s hair almost took this endearing turn.

Every new McU movie is an opportunity to give some old heroes a new style, and so this piece of Avengers: Infinity War concept art suggests a dark and dazzling look for Chris Hemsworth’s character that takes inspiration from Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch’s The Ultimates comic series.

“Ultimate Thor! This was an early design pitch I proposed before we knew Thor’s hair would be short at the beginning of Infinity War. It’s always a blast to translate something as directly as possible from the comics! The awesome comic design is by the insanely talented Bryan Hitch.”

The Art of Avengers: Infinity War book is the gift that keeps on giving. It’s shown us interesting alternative takes on pretty much every major character in Avengers: Infinity War, and revealed that some really cool ideas were being discussed that never made it to the movie. Now, this latest one is going to make longtime comic book fans of Captain America very happy, as they were considering putting him in the black and red U.S. Agent costume from the source material.
For those who don’t know, U.S. Agent has a long and interesting history in Marvel Comics, with his initial concept being to show an example of patriotism gone wrong, and the hero was indeed originally named Super-Patriot (subtle). While he might have started off as a villain, he gradually became more heroic as the years progressed, eventually standing in for Cap himself. When Steve Rogers returned,...

Peter Parker is growing up, and in Avengers: Infinity War, he had the sophisticated nanotech suit to show for it. For Marvel Studios’ Head of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding, this costume change was a coming-of-age moment for the web-slinger, and he set about designing Spidey’s fancy new outfit to reflect this transition.
In the new artbook Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War – The Art of the Movie, Meinerding recalls how Peter’s new getup marked the moment where he ceased to be a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man and became a fully-fledged Avenger.
“It was an interesting and fun design challenge, and I think he definitely feels like a different Spider-Man in this movie,” Meinerding said. “It allows him to feel like he’s moving away from being just a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man and actually becoming an Avenger–which is a huge story point and one that I was happy to help contribute to.

The bosses at Marvel Studios are clearly big fans of Anthony and Joe Russo, entrusting the pair with pivotal, high-stakes projects like Avengers: Infinity War and the upcoming Avengers 4. Nonetheless, it seems that these sibling directors don’t always get what they want, with Marvel Studios’ Head of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding recalling how Spider-Man’s McU debut in Captain America: Civil War could’ve played out a little differently if the Russos had their way.
In the new artbook Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War – The Art of the Movie, Meinerding discusses the Iron Spider costume exhibited by Peter in the Russo Brothers’ last film, explaining how he incorporated elements from a design that the directors had wanted for their previous movie:

Long before Eddie Brock established himself as a big screen lead in his own right, concept artist Jerad Marantz was concerned that one of his designs for Avengers: Infinity War might be too reminiscent of Spider-Man’s old foe Venom.
In the new artbook Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War – The Art of the Movie, Marantz takes us through the thinking behind the big screen debut of the vicious Outriders, explaining that he took some inspiration from the outfits of Thanos and his minions in designing a less symbiote-esque look for these creatures.
“I loved designing the Outriders. It was a real challenge,” Marantz recalls. “After looking at the source material, I wanted them to have a biomechanics quality to them. “It’s like a pirate had a baby with an angel.”
Turns out that comment, while hilarious, helped inspire the overall look of Thor’s costume during Avengers: Infinity War. Or so says Ryan Meinerding, Head of Visual Development at Marvel Studios, who was interviewed as part of the recently-released ‘Art of the Movie’ book for Infinity War.
As expected, it’s packed to the rafters with little McU tidbits – be it a candid interview with head honcho Kevin Feige or swathes of concept art dedicated to Thanos, the greatest Marvel Studios villain ever conceived. But now, the spotlight has turned towards the God of Thunder himself, whose radical redesign was partly inspired by Drax’s “space pirate” comment. Allow Meinerding to explain:

Thanos kills a whole load of people in Avengers: Infinity War, but he saves most of these deaths for one grand gesture at the end of the movie, raising the question of why he largely refrains from taking lives along the way. After all, a guy who wants to wipe out half the universe is hardly going to have a crisis of conscience over killing the heroes who are trying to stop him.
In the new artbook Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War – The Art of the Movie, Marvel Studios Head of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding offers his answer to this question, making the case that the Mad Titan doesn’t kill his enemies because he quite simply doesn’t need to.

Spider-Man’s upgrade to the Iron Spider suit in Avengers: Infinity War was probably necessary. Despite turning down an armored suit at the conclusion of Homecoming, preferring to remain a friendly neighborhood hero, it’s doubtful he would’ve lasted long against Thanos and his minions without a bit more protection than fabric. While most seem to have agreed that the final Iron Spider suit looked great, this concept art below makes it look like it could’ve been even more stylish.

The new cover from the upcoming book The Art of Avengers: Infinity War has just been unveiled, and it shows off a mighty fine piece from Marvel Studios’ own Ryan Meinerding.
The concept art seems to depict the all-star clash on Titan, when Thanos faced off against Iron Man, Spider-Man, Star-Lord, Mantis, Nebula, Drax, and Doctor Strange, though the last two names on that list are absent from the illustration.
In Avengers: Infinity War, this fight scene made for a tense and well-orchestrated chapter, though for many viewers, the sequence is primarily remembered as the part where Peter Quill inadvertently ruined the plans of our heroes. And while directors Anthony and Joe Russo have repeatedly defended Star-Lord for losing his cool in the confrontation, many fans still harbor a grudge against Chris Pratt’s character.

The Avengers will always be remembered as a special Marvel movie.
It was, after all, the first comic book movie of its generation to unite Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, albeit with one or two internal conflicts along the way. Hey, it wouldn’t be the Avengers if they didn’t butt heads every once in a while.
Fast forward to now, though, and the McU is practically unrecognizable as we stand on the precipice of Phase 4, eagerly awaiting the back-to-back launch of Captain Marvel and the as-yet-untitled Avengers 4. Both Marvel movies are due to arrive next year, but for his latest post, esteemed concept artist Charlie Wen has shared his early Captain America design that was considered in the lead-up to The Avengers, before fellow Marvel wizard Ryan Meinerding came in and finished the job.

One of the most popular character dynamics in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the sibling rivalry between Asgardian brothers Thor and Loki. McU lovers adore the banter between Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston and it’s been a rollercoaster ride seeing their complex relationship develop over the years.
It all began in 2011’s Thor, of course, which saw the God of Thunder exiled to Earth, giving the trickster god the perfect opportunity to lead the Frost Giants in a quest to take over Asgard. Apart from the tussle with the Destroyer in New Mexico, the big battle of the third act was Thor and Loki’s fierce fight on the Bifrost bridge.
Now, we’ve got some early concept art for the movie which captures how this sibling skirmish could have gone down differently. The piece displays some very similar character designs to the finalized versions, but there is the odd difference.

It’s arguably the film’s true centerpiece, as we see Marvel’s strongest characters duke it out for the first time since their brief squabble in The Avengers. And though Thor struggles to admit it, Hulk actually emerged victorious, no thanks to that awesome gladiator armor.

It’s arguably the film’s true centerpiece, as we see Marvel’s strongest characters duke it out for the first time since their brief squabble in The Avengers. And though Thor struggles to admit it, Hulk actually emerged victorious, no thanks to that awesome gladiator armor.
The actual design of said battle suit evolved quite dramatically throughout development, though, as this newly-revealed piece of concept art attests to:

2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy famously managed to turn a group of the oddest, most obscure Marvel characters into one of the McU’s most successful sub-franchises. Mostly how it did that was by its pitch-perfect renderings of the titular cosmic heroes. Two of them, for example, are instantly familiar to any moviegoer nowadays – Star-Lord, with his leather jacket and helmet and Rocket, who’s basically just a raccoon on his hind legs.
The piece of concept art below, however, which unveils an unused design for these two characters, teases just how different Peter Quill and his trash panda pal could have looked in James Gunn’s space-age action-comedy. As created by Marvel Studios’ chief concept artist Ryan Meinerding, the design features a much more gritty-looking take on the duo, against a backdrop of some battle-torn war zone.

Some never before seen concept art of Red Skull from Captain America: The First Avenger has arrived online today, courtesy of artist Ryan Meinerding, Head of Visual Development for Marvel Studios. He shared the awesome piece below, which sees Hugo Weaving’s Johann Schmidt in elaborate Nazi regalia, on his Twitter account, and revealed that it should’ve featured in the movie during the scene in which Red Skull gets his portrait painted.
Red Skull’s always been one of the most popular supervillains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the character being among the more faithful lifts from the comics. Despite fans’ wishes, however, he never returned to the McU. That is, until earlier this year when Avengers: Infinity War finally saw the Hydra leader make his long-awaited comeback.
The recent blockbuster revealed that Red Skull had been transported to the planet Vormir after the events of The First Avenger.

A new piece of concept art has surfaced for Avengers: Infinity War thanks to D23 and it features several of the heroes that fill the McU gathered together and ready to fight. This is an early piece of concept art for the film as most of the heroes are sporting their older costume and character designs. The art above was created by Ryan Meinerding.
I also included an IMAX poster below that has some "IMAX" Easter eggs as well as a piece of promo art featuring Thanos' Black Order.
We have yet to see any footage from the film of all the Avengers gathered together. Everything we've seen shows them in small groups, except for the Wakanda battle scenes, but that's probably nothing compared to what this movie has in store for fans.
We know that at one point every hero will be on the same screen together and that is going to be epic!

Though it’s easy to get swept up by the excitement of Avengers: Infinity War (Thanos! Hawkeye! Wakanda! More!), 2018 marks a very special moment for the Marvel Cinematic Universe: its 10th anniversary.
Since its humble beginnings back in 2008, Marvel’s juggernaut franchise has truly ballooned in size, and it’s a credit to Kevin Feige and über-producer Louis D’Esposito – two executives with the ‘Midas touch’ – that the likes of Black Panther, Thor, Black Widow and Doctor Strange are now considered household names.
Yes, the road to Infinity War has been one big, emphatic success story for the folks at Marvel Studios, and to commemorate that legacy, the esteemed Ryan Meinerding has produced a sun-kissed Avengers painting designed to raise a glass to 10 years of the McU. And it’s arrived just in time for D23.
