So I have no idea if the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl series ended at #50 for actual economic reasons (slowing sales), for fake economic reasons (Marvel wanted to concentrate only on comics that can have ten different covers), or for real creative reasons. It may have even been a reason I’m not considering – perhaps the combined forces of global squirrels realized this comic was too close to reality for their liking, and they’ve used their squirrely wiles to suppress it.
But, for whatever reason, Unbeatable Squirrel Girl – at that point the longest-running Marvel comic – ended with issue #50, in January of last year.
The very last storyline was collected in this, the last collection: The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Vol. 12: To All the Squirrels I’ve Loved Before . As with the previous few books, the creative team was writer Ryan North, artist Derek Charm, and color artist Rico Renzi, with a...

I’m trying to figure out how far behind I am on Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, and it is surprisingly difficult, since this is a Marvel comic. The series ended in late 2019 with issue 58, but the trade paperbacks are still dribbling out, since they’re all slim. I believe Marvel has only managed to emit Vol. 12, which probably collects issues 47-51, meaning there’s one or two more books yet to come.
But none of this is simple, and places like Wikipedia and the Grand Comics Database and the Marvel Database fail to list those trades at all. But, I am behind, though the series has now ended, so I won’t get any further behind from this point.
Anyway, I’m here to talk about The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Vol. 8: My Best Friend’s Squirrel , written by Ryan North, drawn by Erica Henderson, colored by Rico Renzi. It collects...

This is volume seven of something, I’m coming to it about two years later, and I’m typing this on Christmas day between other festivities. [1] So I expect this will be a short and perfunctory post — those of you who care about Squirrel Girl likely read this book a while ago, and I don’t have high hopes of convincing any of the rest of you at this point.
So, first up, this comes after the previous collections of the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl comic: one and two and three and four and five and six . And also the Ogn , which slots in around volume four or so.
The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Vol. 7: I’ve Been Waiting for a Squirrel Like You is written by Ryan North (except one short story in issue 26), drawn by Erica Henderson and colored by Rico Renzi (who only did part of issue 26). It...

We've read a Ton of great comics in the last 10 years, and we picked out the 100 best for you to passionately disagree with.
What a century this last decade has been.
Seriously, the pace of change over the last 10 years has been steadily rising, and has been somewhere between “dangerous” and “murderous” for the last 3, and that isn’t just about geopolitics: the comics world of today is certainly recognizable to a time traveller from 2010, but it would look extremely weird.
- Webcomics and medium press publishers are Everywhere now.
- Marvel has embraced multiple restarts of its line.
- DC has rebooted its universe at least twice.
- Comics are for kids again.
- Nerds rule culture, for all that’s good and bad.
These changes have been catalysts for some very, very good comic books, and we wanted to give you a list of some of our favorites.

Doreen Green is still cute, still a bit chunky, still indomitable, and still the most upbeat character in comics. But she’s now a second-year student in Computer Science at Empire State U — which state is weirdly referred to as a “second-year alum” more than once — which means she’s that much closer to actually being able to create {insert technical thing that I don’t really understand here}.
The “big” change in her status (oh, she’s also a New Avenger, which is mentioned in the first issue and ignored otherwise) is because this third collection starts up what was in late 2015 a new series of comics about Doreen, aka Squirrel Girl, after she was involved in whatever crisis was going on that summer. (I think it was the one where all mutants died, since there was a fourth-wall-leaning reference to her very definitely not being a mutant of any kind.

Hello again, and welcome to the recently resurrected Panel Discussion. I’m Kieran, and every week I’m going to go through some of the best comics of the week to give you an idea what you should pick up that you might have missed. This is another stacked week with some fantastic first issues and great jumping on points for books you might be behind on, so let’s take a look at what’s on offer.
The massive release this week, the one everyone is going to be talking about, is Dark Days: The Forge #1 from DC Comics by Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, Jim Lee, Andy Kubert and John Romita Jr. This is an absolute must-read for DC Comics die-hards, and while I won’t spoil anything here, so much happens in this one comic that sets up the future of both Snyder and Greg Capullo...

One of the best things to come with Disney’s acquisition of Marvel Comics has been the way in which television has become a haven for superhero narratives, with a diverse range of stories being told. And finally, that will include one of the greatest obscure characters in the Marvel universe — Doreen Green, Aka Squirrel Girl.
Here’s the catch: Squirrel Girl isn’t getting her own show. Instead, she’s set to be just one of the characters featured in “Marvel’s New Warriors,” a new Freeform comedy that was ordered direct to series Wednesday morning.
Until recently, Marvel’s focus has been on creating narratives for a more adult audience, but there are a few projects in the works via Freeform and Hulu focused on young adults — the upcoming “Cloak and Dagger” and “Runaways,” specifically.
Not every show can be a winner, either financially or creatively. “Agent Carter” was beautifully executed,...

Stranger Things has been a critical hit for Netflix but one of its stars is ready to move onto bigger things. For instance, the Marvel cinematic universe. Note: I'm not going to discuss Stranger Things spoilers here so please do your fellow viewers a favor and resist doing so in the comments. We've certainly got some other posts for that on the site. The Netflix series has definitely referenced superheroes but the character Shannon Purser, who plays our beloved Barb on the show, would want to play hadn't even been invented during the show's time period. It's Squirrel Girl! So who do I talk to about being Squirrel Girl? — Shannon Purser (@ShannonPurser7) July 24, 2016 Fans seemed enthusiastic about the news if her replies are any indication and a Marvel editor already invited her to stop by their headquarters in New York if she's ever in town. Thank you ???? Big Marvel fan since forever!

It’s a story so huge that (at least according to the over-excited press release they sent us) it took an entire original graphic novel to tell it! She’s unbeatable. She talks to squirrels – she is The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl and in the new Ogn from Marvel she Beats Up The Marvel Universe!
Yes, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Beats Up the Marvel Universe is on its way from the award winning team behind the monthly Unbeatable Squirrel Girl series – Ryan North and Erica Henderson – this October.
She’s beaten Thanos. She’s bested Galactus. She’s thwarted Doctor Doom (twice, but who’s counting?). But in this all-new graphic novel, she’ll take on her most dangerous, most powerful and most unbeatable enemy yet: Herself! Specifically, an evil duplicate created through all manner of mad science (computer and regular type). So what happens when two Unbeatable Squirrel Girl’s clash?...

This column is going to make me sound old. Really really really old.
In the new issue of Jughead by Chip Zdarsky and Erica Henderson, Jughead comes out as asexual. As I write this, it hasn’t yet appeared on the stands, but I’ve loved the series so far and I’m really looking forward to it. Still, the news sent me on a tour of the Internet to exciting new avenues of political correctness.
(Note: I want to be politically correct here. I am trying to understand people who are new to me, and I want to be polite and respectful.)
The first thing I found out is that this isn’t even really news. Comicbook.com had the story way back on September 25. My first reaction was surprise that this didn’t show up on any of my feeds at that time. My second reaction was admiration...

Crown-wearing Archie Comics character Jughead Jones has traditionally been more into burgers than romance, and a new comic is about to casually reveal that he is, in fact, asexual. In other words, he's a person who isn't sexually attracted to other people — a kind of sexual identity that's rarely depicted in popular fiction. But when writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Erica Henderson were tasked with helping Archie's companywide reboot of its classic characters, they opted to subtly take a stand and add a new facet to a long-established property. The revelation happens in Jughead No. 4, which hits stands and digital outlets on Wednesday. Archie gave some preview pages to ComicBookResources.com, one of which had the following exchange: Zdarsky had actually talked about Jughead's asexuality last September during an interview with ComicBook.com. "There have been iterations of Jughead over the decades where he has been interested in girls, so...

Jughead #3
Written by Chip Zdarsky

Letters by Jack Morelli
Published by Archie Comics
Writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Erica Henderson continue to make Jughead one of the funniest and most unique current comics in their third issue. Zdarsky hits the right note of dry humor and depression in his script starting with the opening scene of Jughead playing video games. That aren’t really there. Henderson’s skill as a gesture cartoonist serves this scene well as she really sells the fact that Jughead is immersed in his favorite Mmorpg like the opening of Jughead #1 when in fact he’s just talking to himself and staring at a blank TV screen. And this is only the start of the comedic brilliance that is this comic, like when Jughead’s dad, Forsythe Jones Sr aka Jonesy, shows up to reduce his expulsion for a knife to one...

Two words could be used to describe comics in 2015: scandal and rebirth. The scandals happened off the pages at both companies large and small, and the rebirth happened in the comics themselves.
Graphic Policy reported that former Dark Horse Comics editor-in-chief Scott Allie bit writer Joe Harris (X-Files Season Ten) at the Boom! Studios party at San Diego Comic Con, and he was demoted to “executive editor” even though an assault of this kind would be grounds for dismissal at almost any other company. There was also another ethical breach at Dark Horse when The Rainbow Hub journalist Emma Houxbois reported that former Bleeding Cool editor Hanna Means-Shannon broke a Dark Horse-related story while it was under embargo and didn’t disclose the fact that she was taking a job with the company.
Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso’s dismissal of African-American comics fans and creators when asked why...

Jughead #2

Letters by Jack Morelli
Published by Archie Comics
Jughead #2 is yet another silly, sarcastic entry in writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Erica Henderson’s surreal, slice of life series starring the Riverdale’s most non-conforming conforming teenager. This issue shows Jughead’s basically superpower of being able to skirt by the rules without breaking from getting free milkshakes from Pop’s to even avoiding detention for the most part under the draconian rule of Principal Stanger. He even has a purely metaphorical cheat code that hacks P.E. class, but Zdarsky and Henderson bring an end to his good luck with a dark and compelling cliffhanger.
One of the highlights of Jughead has been Erica Henderson’s cartoonish, yet with normal body proportions take on the Archie characters as she puts her own imprint on classic characters, like Betty, Archie, Kevin Keller...

Not only does Steve Orlando’s Midnighter comic star a gay man, it tells blunt, sex-positive stories about that character. The main cast of characters in the upcoming main Avengers comic All-New, All-Different Avengers has only one white dude.
While there is still a lot of work on the road to a utopia of complete social justice, there is a trend of progressivism in some of today’s superhero comics that is impossible to ignore.
“There’s certainly a long way to go, but [the comics industry] is moving in the right direction,” said Orlando via phone interview on Oct. 23.
Books like Batgirl and Cyborg from DC Comics as well as Unbeatable Squirrel Girl and Ms. Marvel down the lane at Marvel coalesce to paint a picture of superhero comics that not only includes a solid focus on minority and women characters, but also features progressive themes concerning identity, racial justice, body image and more.

Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #1
Written by Ryan North

Letters by Clayton Cowles
Published by Marvel Comics
The best parts about Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #1 are that it never takes itself seriously and always goes for the weird, quirky take on the superhero genre. Writer Ryan North structures the comic like a great Saturday morning cartoon with a dark, seemingly ominous intro and then kicking in the action, comedy, and friendly banter between Doreen Green aka Squirrel Girl and her fellow superhero pals Chipmunk and Koi Boi and her ever faithful squirrel sidekick Tippytoe. Like a cartoon, there are great visual gags from artist Erica Henderson, like Squirrel Girl struggling to carry her roommate Nancy Whitehead and mom Maureen Green (Seriously.) over a rooftop, and the comic tells a complete self-contained story. However, North and Henderson go a little deeper and give the villain of the week Brain Drain,...

Jughead #1
Written by Chip Zdarsky
Art by Erica Henderson
Letters by Jack Morelli
Published by Archie Comics
Erica Henderson and Chip Zdarsky’s incarnation of this classic Archie book launches the titular sidekick as the most unlikely of heroes. Zdarsky revives Archie’s sarcastic, egocentric best friend with his distinct brand of petulant humor. Though it may be classified as a ‘kids’ comic, Jughead potentially offers the most enjoyment for a different demographic. That is not to say Jughead lacks the intrinsic, whimsical joy found in other Archie books. Rather, Zdarsky’s not-so-subtle allusions are simply more likely to be appreciated by an audience familiar with mature pop-culture content.
Upon learning that the new principle, Mr. Stanger, has mandated only “high-nutrition gruel” be served at the cafeteria, Jughead dramatically falls unconscious. In an indulgent and unconventional poke at a certain popular fantasy drama, Jughead’s dream narrative, titled “Jughead in Game of Jones,...

This year, I will be attending my first ever New York Comic Con with a press pass from Popoptiq.com. I am very excited and a little nervous about getting the chance to rub shoulders with 150,000+ comics, sci-fi, fantasy, anime, and video game fans. (Sorry if I forgot your specific niche.) This year, New York Comic Con is really bringing their A-game as far as panels, guests, and even afterparty opportunities. This year’s guests range from Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto to the casts and writers of upcoming genre TV shows like Sword of Shannara, Ash vs. the Evil Dead, and Legends of Tomorrow and of course, a stacked comics creator lineup from living legends like Chris Claremont and Brian K. Vaughan and relatively new stars like Batgirl artist Babs Tarr and Unbeatable Squirrel Girl and Jughead artist Erica Henderson.

After being hinted at for the past two issues, Veronica Lodge finally attends her first day of school at Riverdale High in Archie #3. Artist Fiona Staples makes her the most fashion forward member of the comic’s ensemble cast while writer Mark Waid gives her quite the complicated personality as she can go from a sly joker to a spoiled rich girl or a detached observer at the drop of a hat. Her arrival heightens the melodrama of the series to a boiling point as Archie starts following her around like a puppy because he is smitten with her and also because he accidentally destroyed her father’s mansion in Archie #2. However, the breakout character of the series continues to be Jughead.

Southern Bastards #7-8
Written by Jason Aaron
Art by Jason Latour
From masterminds Jason Aaron and Jason Latour comes Southern Bastards, a tale about a man, living with regret, battling the demons from his past, and facing them in his hometown. The writing is so good that Bastards has the feel of a great novel that’s rooted deep in American soil – in a place where the hero’s morality, regardless of the laws of country and state, is the last hope for a positive change. Set in the fictional Craw County, Alabama, the first story arc features a man on a mission to clean up his town with nothing but a stick locking horns with a crime boss who happens to be the local high-school football coach. The second story arc shifts perspectives and shows how the worst football player rose to power, and the sacrifices he made along the way.

In her first appearance, she defeated Doctor Doom. Since then, she's taken on Wolverine, Deadpool, and freaking Thanos—and she's never lost. Not a bad track record for a superhero–especially considering that the superhero in question is Squirrel Girl, a Marvel Comics back-bencher who's probably best known for being Luke Cage's nanny. (She was also on the Great Lakes Avengers, one of the goofiest superteams in history. Like, the Great Lakes Avengers make the West Coast Avengers look like the Dark Avengers.) But now, at long last, Squirrel Girl is getting her own solo ongoing series starting in January.
