Nude Nuns with Big Guns (2010)
Directed by Joseph Guzman
Runtime 91 minutes
Co-written (with Robert James Hayes II) and directed by Joseph Guzman (Run! Bitch Run! {2009}), Nude Nuns with Big Guns is one of those films that I thought I would love, based on my experience with nunsploitation films, but it turned out to be just average.
Sister Sarah (Asun Ortega) took her vows with a church/convent that ended up part of a drug ring. The nuns were abused and forced to do all of the work of cutting and packaging the drugs while the priests and Mother Magda (Emma Messenger) collected all of the money. Sister Sarah is handed over to the big dealer Chavo (David Castro) when a delivery doesn’t go as planned. She is shot full of heroin and put to work as a prostitute. After being beaten by Brother John...

Denver Underground Film Festival
The Denver Underground Film Festival is changing things up a bit this year, namely moving its screening dates up a few months. The fest will run May 18-20 instead of its usual late autumn / early winter dates.
This is also a short films only festival, accepting movies that are 30 minutes or less. But, they are looking for short films in all applicable genres and breaking things into these categories: Narrative, Experimental, Animated, Documentary and Music Video.
To get an idea of the kinds of films they like, it’s probably best to check out last year’s list of award winners, which comes with general descriptions of why they won. You can also look at last year’s full lineup here.
Since the fest is running earlier than normal this year, here at Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film, we’ve missed posting their Early Bird Deadline.

Pure exploitation trash with a veneer of style.
Catholic schoolgirls, Rebecca (Christina DeRosa) and the virginal Catherine (Cheryl Lyone) are selling bibles door to door to raise money for school when they knock on the door of the wrong house at the wrong time.
In the house is gang leader and pimp, Lobo, played by Peter Tahoe who has just shot and killed one of his ‘girls’ for stealing his drugs. Lobo and his gang kidnap the girls, and Rebecca is killed while being forced to play Russian roulette. Catherine is then taken out to the woods where she is raped and left for dead.
Naked, she eventually stumbles onto the highway where she is picked up by a passing motorist and taken to a hospital. Soon she recovers, and feels compelled to exact her revenge on her assailants.

For their 5th annual event, which is set to run Sept. 8-11, the Sydney Underground Film Festival is looking a little more demented than ever. And that’s saying a lot for this scrappy, still relatively young fest, which typically offers ample twisted cinematic offerings.
The fun kicks off with the Opening Night film, the demented superhero comedy Super, written and directed by former Troma go-to screenwriter James Gunn (Tromeo & Juliet); then ends with the Closing Night wallowing in Sydney’s seedy underbelly, X, by homegrown filmmaker Jon Hewitt.
Crammed between these two excursions into violence and depravity is a lineup filled with perverse visions, scandalous public figures, sickening horror, experimental pop culture remixes and more.
For Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film, the highlight of the fest is Usama Alshaibi‘s Profane, a complex psychological, psychosexual, spiritual morality play about a Muslim sex worker who endures a “reverse...

Bill Oberst Jr. is the definition of “the horror actor”, the working actor doesn’t prefer anything outside of the horror genre and wouldn’t have it any other way. Oberst has some cool projects in the works including Vivid and Legend of the Red Reaper, he shares some stories about working on True Blood and MTV’s upcoming horror series Death Valley. The actor keeps busy for sure! Check out my latest Versus with Bill Oberst Jr. to learn more about this hard working cool actor.
Brian S- First off you've really been cranking out film projects since 2007. How'd you get into acting?
Bill Oberst Jr.- I was a bizarre-looking kid who loved monsters and the other kids made fun of me. I learned a useful equation: "If You Entertain People, They Will Not Hit You." So my whole career has pretty much been about trying to get people not to hit me.

Think back to Robert De Niro (Heat). Think back to Al Pacino (Scent of a Woman). Robert De Niro was known for his intensity. Al Pacino was known for his flashy screen presence. Now think of veteran character actor of horror films, Bill Oberst Jr. (Dismal, Vivid, The Devil Within). Bill Oberst Jr. has both the flash of Pacino and the intensity of De Niro. It's the best of both worlds in one package. And directors and producers are taking notice. In less then four years, Bill Oberst Jr. has had well over thirty film credits. Since he works his fair share in the horror genre, he is often seen playing the villain or the creepy guy or even, on occasion, the rapist. However, Bill Oberst Jr. wants you to know that their is more to him then just that. That he has an extra layer of dimensionality. That he's not just one note.

Okay, so this week we have covered the "Top Five Indie Horror Films," with an article found here: Best Indie Horror Films of 2010. Also covered was the "Top Five International Horror Films." An article on this posting is here: Top Five International Films. But, now we are exploring a more depraved side of horror, or a lower class of film. This top five list will cover the "Worst Five Horror Films of 2010!"
This year, there was so much to choose from in poor horror films. Abroad, we have the dismal Basement starring Danny Dyer and Jimi Mistry to the absolutely monstrosity of a film from Australia called Outback aka Prey starring the incapable Natalie Bassingthwaighte. Domestically, films like the Zombie Chronicles: The Infected made this reviewer want to scratch his eyes out, while others like Apocalypse of the Dead aka Zone of the Dead made one reach for the off button with lightening like reflexes.

Sometimes you have to go low brow to get the message out and today is a day for those indie horror fans who like boobs and blood. Nude Nuns with Big Guns will be having a premiere November 3rd in Santa Monica at the
Boobs and Blood wrap up event. This is a charity sponsored event for Bowling for Boobies, which is a cause valiantly fighting breast cancer. The film itself pits one abused nun against a corrupt clergy, with guns and sex appeal the only way to salvation. So, support healthy breasts everywhere, and a great film, by ordering your tickets soon (this showing will undoubtedly sell out). More details below.
The synopsis for the film:

Nnwbg PosterThis is an independent film which has been making a lot of buzz for mixing sexuality with spirituality, especially Catholicism. Nude Nuns with Big Guns offers more than controversy however, as Sister Sarah is tormented in this first trailer for the film. This is a mature clip, since Sarah is drugged, stripped and left for dead. But much like Jesus she returns from near death to prove that she "is one bad mother!" (Camelot). Check out the clip below.

'Nude Nuns with Big Guns' doesn't need much of an endorsement other than what its title suggests -- sexy servants of God wielding wicked guns. If you still have exploitation fever after Rodriguez's 'Machete' then this one should cure what ails you.

The Arizona Underground Film Festival wrapped up its 3rd and biggest year ever back on Sept. 25. Over a wild eight days, the fest screened 30 feature films and 50 short films from all over the world, some of them making their world premiere or their U.S. debut. Out of those films, Auff handed out a dozen awards.
Auff gave out awards to both shorts and features in the categories of Best Narrative, Best Horror, Best Documentary. Plus, they gave out awards such as Best Exploitation, Best Experimental, Audience Award, Director’s Choice and more.
Best Experimental went to a film directed nearly 30 years ago that’s just being seen now. That film is Window on Your Present by Cinqué Lee, brother of Spike Lee.
Other big winners are Corey Adams and Alex Craig’s skateboard fantasy Machotaildrop for Best Narrative Feature; Aurelio Voltaire‘s short film Demiurge Emesis for Best Animation...

Tucson and Phoenix: Prepare to be rocked, shocked and defiled. Blasting its way into its third — and biggest — year on Sept. 18-25, the Arizona Underground Film Festival is a cacophonous concoction of angry transsexuals, bumbling hit men, slacker superheroes, living dolls, aliens, dead hookers, adventure-seeking blondes and other crazies.
This year the fest is screening 30 feature films, some of which are making their U.S. and even world debuts. The opening night film is the U.S. premiere of the German hit man comedy Snowman’s Land, directed by Tomasz Thomson, while closing the fest is the controversial and violent A Serbian Film by Srdjan Spasojevic, which you have to be over-18 to get into.

If you have Netflix and are a horror fan in need of something to watch this Labor Day weekend, one look at this gargantuan list I compiled of the new terror titles Netflix has added for instant streaming in just the first three days of this month should keep you busy until Labor Day next year. You'll find something for everyone, from older titles to recent releases, famous to obscure, classic to not-so-classic, monsters to maniacs - you name it.
For the record, I considered compiling this list in alphabetical order or by year of the film's release, but then I realized I had already spent well over an hour just sorting through the massive catalogue of titles Netflix has now made available for instant streaming and realized Labor Day would be over by the time I finished arranging this list in any kind of order. Ready? Here you go.

Joseph Guzman on set of NNWBGJoseph Guzman has been behind the camera in several roles, while always working his way to the director's chair. During his time as a filmmaker Guzman has worked as producer on the short film Spyware, the supernatural thriller Chingaso the Clown, and the feature Driving Bill Crazy in 2008. His first feature as a director was the ultra-violent Run! Bitch Run!, which starred Christina DeRosa and Cheryl Lyone. This film involved two Catholic schoolgirls on the run from crazed drug dealers. Guzman has also worked as an art director on several films and his latest film is called Nude Nuns with Big Guns. This film is slated for a 2010 release and Nude Nuns takes off the habits of many of the female characters in exchange for long barrelled weaponry.

Director / producer Joseph Guzman is bringing the nunsploitation back. Asun Ortega stars in Guzman's latest as, apparently, a nun who will get naked while wielding large firearms. Here's the official synopsis:

Believe it or not, I’ve actually lost count of how many exploitation homages we’re currently dealing with at the moment, though you won’t hear me complaining about it. As an avid fan of 70’s and early-80’s cinema, I eat this sort of dodgy entertainment for breakfast, lunch, and, depending on the week, dinner. Joseph Guzman’s “Run! Bitch Run!” seemingly follows in the footsteps of such cinematic fodder as “Black Dynamite,” “Black Devil Doll,” and Ti West’s superior “The House of the Devil,” offering up plenty of retro entertainment that promises to be just as low-brow and low-budget as the countless motion pictures which inspired it. The film looks promising, though it’s anybody’s guess if the damned thing will be worth the price of admission. For the curious, a synopsis: Catherine and Rebecca are two Catholic School girls going door-to-door selling Religious paraphernalia...

Rich Wolff and Richard Ross, both former Tla Releasing execs, are launching a new North American distribution company, Breaking Glass Pictures, named after David Bowie's 1995 song.
The new distributor, which said it would not restrict itself to any particular genre, has begun to develop a slate that includes the rock film "The Band," from Australian director Anna Brownfield, and director Everett Lewis' "Lucky Bastard," about a man whose life spirals out of control when he falls for a street hustler.
In early 2010, The company will release Morgan J. Freeman's road movie "Just Like the Son," starring Rosie Perez and Mark Webber.
The company is looking to line up other distribution agreements for both individual films and catalogs and also plans to provide service deals.
And it will distribute up to 12 titles annually through the new specialty label Vicious Circle Films, focusing on extreme material, such as "Hanger,...

The Texas vampire opus Blood On The Highway by Barak Epstein, whose Prison-a-go-go won the Best Film prize at the 2004 Backseat Fest, and Blair Rowan, just had its Philly premiere there last night, and upcoming are the Southern survival shocker Resurrection County, from Cellar Door’s Matt Zettell; Rona Mark’s Strange Girls,...
