It has been well establish that superhero films have basically become their own genre. Their popularity and sheer volume has placed them into their own unique category. We are also beginning to see subcategories emerge within superhero films that twist and turn the typical format we have come to expect. The film All Superheroes Must Die is one of the newest examples of this phenomenon. It takes the archetypal heroes we recognize and places them into dark and perverse world we would normally associate with a horror film. That juxtaposition of genre is clever premise which could provide a much needed boost to a genre that can easily become stale. Regrettably the final product does not live up to the promise of that potential. Being a small...

Fox is both attempting to get their Wolverine franchise back on track and trying to create a cohesive universe with the time-spanning "X-Men: Days of Future Past." It's obvious that they're trying to capture the movie magic (and profitability) of Marvel's cinematic universe. It's still possible that the events of "X-Men: Days of Future Past" will reset the original trilogy, giving those fan-favorite actors and characters a chance to live on, Phoenix-free and mutant-cure-free.
If Fox is attempting to create a universe to rival that of the Avengers one, there's no better set of characters to make that happen than the X-Men. With stories and spin-off series now numbering in the thousands, the possibilities for expansion are endless. Here are a few corners of the X-Men universe that Fox should bring to the big screen next:

2007 was a bad year for the superhero genre, and it gave us three films that ran the range from mediocre to awful. On the high end of that scale you had Tmnt, followed by Spider-man 3, and then Ghost Rider. If it wasn’t laughable enough to cast Nicolas Cage as the spirit of vengeance, then the special effects, script, and direction did the trick. Ghost Rider stands as one of the worst entries in the superhero genre today. The bright side of making a sequel for a film that was universally panned is that you theoretically have nowhere to go but up. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance climbs a fraction of the way out of the pit dug by the original, but it’s still unintentionally funny. The only improvement is Director duo’s Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor adrenaline-fueled take on action sequences, leaving their signature mark made...

Any suggestions that Sony might give up on comic book adaptations after the new Ghost Rider crashed and burned at the box office look to be way off track.
Chronicle director Josh Trank has now been linked to the studio's long-planned Spider-Man spin-off Venom.
Venom is an archenemy of Spider-Man formed when a symbiotic alien creature arrives on Earth and bonds with a human host, notably photographer Eddie Brock, giving him superhuman powers and corrupting him to the dark side.
The character was seen on screen in Spider-Man 3, with Topher Grace in the role, although the portrayal was not well received. The new film is likely to be a reboot, with Grace not expected to reprise the role.
Sony has been planning a solo spin-off for Venom since 2008, with various script drafts by Jacob Estes and Zombieland scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, before Gary Ross was set to write and direct the film.

Looking to replace their cultishly popular hit Smallville, television network The CW is closer to filling the time slot - and hopefully the ratings - with Arrow, another DC Comics-based superhero drama.
Casting is now in progress and Katie Cassidy (right), who's been in The CW's Supernatural and Gossip Girl, has been announced as playing an attorney called Laurel, love interest of Green Arrow's billionaire alter-ego Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell). Her character is modeled after Dinah Laurel Lance, who was also known as the sonic-screaming Black Canary in the comics.
She's been joined on the roster by Willa Holland (who we saw in The O.C. and Gossip Girl) as Oliver Queen's younger sister Thea Queen, according to Deadline.
And there's more casting news with Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau filling a spot in the Tom Cruise-headlined post-apocalypse project Oblivion.
The sci-fi flick already has Morgan Freeman, Andrea Riseborough...

Unlike Spider-Man, X-Men or The Hulk, Marvel Comics’ Ghost Rider isn’t getting a reboot. It’s coming back with its lead Nicolas Cage.
In this behind-the-scenes featurette, Directors Brian Taylor and Mark Neveldine claim that having Cage in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance makes the movie “way cooler.” But for many viewers, the bad taste of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and Season of the Witch still lingers. And, lets not mention Cage’s Adam West performance as Damon Macready/Big Daddy in Kick-Ass.
It’s been a long time since Cage wowed viewers. The Rock, Con Air and Face/Off were back-to-back-to-back successes. But it all ended after 1997. After a slew of bad movies, most adult viewers can’t stomach the thought of seeing Cage as an action hero. Unlike Dwayne “The Rock” Johnsons, who seamlessly shifted from Tooth Fairy to Faster, Cage doesn’t have the same ability.

Nycc 2011 Superhero Round-Up: 'Green Lantern,' 'Ant-Man,' 'Ghost Rider' And 'The Amazing Spider-Man'
Of course 'The Avengers' was going to dominate this year's New York Comic-Con. It was the biggest name on the card besides 'The Amazing Spider-Man,' but Sony is apparently waiting until Wonder-Con (March 16-18, 2012) to unleash some new material from the web-slinger's reboot outing. But other superheroes did get brought up at the Con. DC Entertainment's Geoff Johns got hassled about a 'Green Lantern' sequel. He's not outright burying the character just yet, but his response is definitely less emphatic than it once was. He said: "There is the hope that we will eventually see one. I hope that the character gets another film, and it will be live-action again - I guarantee." The Playlist caught up with Joe Cornish and asked him about the status of 'Ant-Man,' a live-action film based on one of Marvel's lesser known characters. On if...

Face front, True Believers! Unable to attend San Diego Comic-Con this year? We've got you covered. What follows is a list of our five favorite things that were revealed at this year's event.
5. ThunderCats: Season 1 hour-long special premiere!
We posted an extra long look at the Season 1 premiere of the brand new "ThunderCats" series and Comic-Con attendees were treated to the first showing of the entire thing!
The reboot of the popular '80s series about the adventures of a group of catlike heroes led by Lion-o will begin airing half-hour-long episodes following next week's televised premiere of the hour-long special, which was shown in advance in San Diego. If more studios and creative types get into the spirit of showing entire programs like "ThunderCats" and "Batman: Year One" at Comic-Con, we certainly won't complain about it. Joss Whedon, Chris Nolan ... we're talking to you!
