Walt Disney has decided to produce Labyrinth, a pitch by Larry Brenner, which does have some of the same narrative elements as Jim Henson’s 1986 project, but not really. Actually, both projects are completely unrelated, they just happen to have some striking similarities.
Brenner’s Labyrinth follows a princess who has to travel a dangerous maze in order to save her father. So instead of a cute baby brother, we get a grown man (who probably won’t be anything like the magnificent David Bowie by the way).
Brenner’s Bethlehem landed on the 2011 Black List of unproduced screenplays, but that film is now being produced by Universal and Roth Films.
Labyrinth will be produced by Jim Whitaker, whose Whitaker Entertainment executives Elizabeth Ingold and Adam Borba helped develop the pitch.

Brenner was discovered after making the finals of the Final Draft Big Break script contest. That led to him setting up Bethlehem at Universal and Roth Films, with Cedric Nicolas-Troyan attached to direct. The script landed him on the 2011 Black List, and he most recently adapted Angelology for Sony Pictures and Overbrook Entertainment. From a graphic novel adaptation and found footage-Amblin homage to another zombie apocalypse and a Chinese mythology inspired action adventure, here’s a round up of recent spec script sales in Hollywood.
Despite the recent financial failure of “John Carter” and the problems currently plaguing Gore Verbinksi’s “The Lone Ranger” adaptation, Disney is already looking towards future tentpoles. It’s being reported that the mouse house has made a deal for an adaptation of the graphic novel “Stuff Of Legend.” The source material, written by Mike Raicht and Brian Smith and illustrated by Charles Paul Wilson III, follows a young boy in 1944 who “is abducted by the Boogeyman, dragged by the ankles into the closet realm known as The Dark. The boy’s puppy rallies his toys to follow his master in a rescue mission. Once in the closet, each of those toys become menacingly large and agile creatures...

On our podcast review of Snow White and the Huntsman, my co-hosts and I briefly joked about Universal’s tactic of placing “From the Producer of Alice in Wonderland” across every piece of marketing under the sun — when, obviously, no one knows who that actually is — and, from that point, mockingly asked just what he might do next. (It was fun; please listen to the episode.)
We have an answer. Variety reports that Joe Roth (that’s his name, by the way) and Universal will, once again, combine money-making forces on a genre piece. In this case, I refer to the spec script Bethlehem, written by newcomer Larry Brenner, that revolves around a group of people seeking help from “an unlikely ally” as they try to make their way toward Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Cedric Nicolas-Troyan (Huntsman‘s second unit director) will, much like Rupert Sanders, make his directing debut on the film.

Is there ever a wrong time to make a supernatural pilgrimage? I mean, what else is there to do? We wake up, work, go to sleep, and then do it all over again. The madness has to stop! This is bullsh... Huh? Oh sorry. Ahem. Read on for the first details of Universal's latest spooker.

Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, who served as VFX supervisor and second unit director on Huntsman, is attached to make his directorial debut with the film, which Roth will produce with Palak Patel. Universal has bought the Black List script Bethlehem, scripted by Larry Brenner. Joe Roth is producing and Cedric Nicolas-Troyan is directing. Nicolas-Troyan makes his feature directing debut after putting together a presentation and pitching it to the studio in a fashion similar to how Roth set up Universal’s Snow White And The Huntsman. Nicholas did second unit work on that film. Brenner is currently working on Angelology at Sony with Overbrook producing and Marc Forster attached to direct. Magnet Management and CAA rep the writer. Through his ambitious production company, Overbrook Entertainment, megastar Will Smith has been crafting a diverse range of projects. To name just a few of his most recent ventures there's the board game-inspired war dramaRisk, the Willow Smith-fronted remake of the musical Annie, and the Will and Jaden Smith-fronted M. Night Shyamalan post-apocalyptic adventure One Thousand A.E. And now Deadline reports a new development on Angelology, a supernatural thriller based on Danielle Trussoni's fantasy novel. Sony Pictures, which is co-producing the film with Smith and James Lassiter of Overbrook and Marc Forster of Apparatus, has hired screenwriter Larry Brenner to craft the adaptation's script. Brenner is best known for having scored a coveted spot on the 2011 blacklist for his zombie and vampire-packed post-apocalyptic venture Bethlehem, and seems a great fit for Angelology, as it too has a batch of mythical beings at its center. Angelology follows 23-year-old Sister Evangeline,...

Deadline reports that Sony has hired Larry Brenner to adapt the 2010 Danielle Trussoni novel Angelology. Brenner made a bit of a name for himself by having his screenplay Bethlehem accepted into last year’s Black List (which lists the best unproduced screenplays floating around Hollywood). Overbook Entertainment, the production company co-owned by husband/wife team Will and Jada Pinkett Smith will co-produce along with Marc Forster‘s company Apparatus. Sony paid $1 million dollars for the rights to the novel in 2009, a year before it was even published.
