Albert Pyun, the filmmaker behind cult favorite B-movies like "The Sword and the Sorcerer" and "Cyborg," died on Saturday 26 November, 2022, at the age of 69. Albert's wife, Cynthia Curnan, shared the news on social media, writing, "I sat with him for his last breath that sounded like he was releasing the weight of the world."
Per Variety, Pyun had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and dementia in recent years, but kept working on projects up until his death. "Its so rote. It's so part of my DNA. It's something I can do fairly effortlessly to keep my mind active," he told the Wall Street Journal in 2018.
While genre movies, and superhero movies in particular, currently dominate the box office and have nine-figure production budgets as standard, Pyun thrived in the arena of low-budget filmmaking. In a retrospective on his career, Pyun said that he worked on the 1993 B-movie "Arcade" for free,...

Over the last forty years, director Albert Pyun has built an awesome career. He started off with the appropriately titled sword and sorcery classic The Sword and the Sorcerer and since then has directed such films as Cyborg, Captain America (1990), Kickboxer 2, Kickboxer 4, Arcade, Nemesis, Dollman, Mean Gun, Infection, and many more. So many more, he has around fifty feature directing credits to his name. Sadly, Pyun was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis several years ago… and it seems he is now in his final days. His wife Cynthia Curnan took to Facebook to ask fans to send in personal messages so she can read them to him. Curnan’s request for messages was then given a signal boost by a Sam Peckinpah fan page.
Curnan’s Facebook post can be found Here. She said, “Albert took another downturn. I could tell he feared going down again. He was working too feverishly.

Director Albert Pyun always has a lot of irons in the fire, but beginning July 16th he'll be focusing strictly on one of them: Cyborg Nemesis, which replaces the previously announced Cyborgs: Rise of the Slingers, and is drawn from the world of Cyborg and the action of Nemesis.
The shoot is taking place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, about which Pyun said, "You might wonder why we selected Argentina as the shoot location for Cyborg Nemesis. Well, first of all, I love the crews there. People there really love cinema. Second, it's in the Southern Hemisphere, which will be in their winter (nuclear of course). Finally, there are locations there that are amazing and that are harder to find in La and Las Vegas. So those are the reasons we choose Argentina - crews, weather, locations."

We got the first word on director Albert Pyun's adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's Cool Air at the end of last week, and to kick of this week, we have a look at the brand new key art for the film.
Cool Air will be debuting at the Estepona International Film Festival in September, and rest of us here in the States should be able to see it soon afterwards via Wrekin Hill, who bought North America rights to the film.
Writer Cynthia Curnan and Pyun have re-imagined the story with a contemporary but no less creepy setting. Cool Air stars Morgan Weisser, Wendy Phillips, Jenny Dare Paulin, Crystal Green, and Norbert Weisser; and the editing is by Glen Berry.
You can check out the opening credits sequence below, but first here's the 1926 short story's synopsis courtesy of Wikipedia:

Another H.P. Lovecraft adaptation is headed our way, this time from the man for whom "rest" is a dirty word, director Albert Pyun, who is putting the finishing touches on Cool Air, which will be debuting at the Estepona International Film Festival in September.

Albert Pyun's long gestating Tales of an Ancient Empire has been picked up for distribution by Liongate, but apparently the version we'll all be able to see starting January 24th isn't exactly the director's own vision for the film so he's decided to release the first 18 minutes of his cut for comparison's sake. Check it out!
Synopsis:
The sword and sorcery epic, written by Cynthia Curnan, tells the story of a princess forced on a quest to recruit the greatest warriors of the ancient world to save her kingdom from a demonic sorceress. But the odyssey to find them reveals a secret past for all.
Michael Pare plays "Oda", father of Kevin Sorbo's character - Aedan - as well as Victoria Maurette's Kara (via Whitney Able's Xia - the vampire sorceress). He also fathers Princess Tanis (Melissa Ordway) and Rajan (Janelle Taylor) amongst others. The film...

As we told you at the end of October, director Albert Pyun finished filming the final scenes of his Road to Hell at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas, including two music performances with The Roxy Gunn Project, and now he's sent over a raw production track of Roxy's performance of "Nowhere Fast".
There's no sound design or sound clean-up and proper 5.1 mix, but this clip edited by Daniel Gutierrez gives a good idea of what the ending climax to Road to Hell, which features Cody (Michael Pare) meeting his long lost daughter for the first time at her concert, is going to look like.
Road to Hell (review of the unfinished version here) was written by Cynthia Curnan and is the unofficial sequel to the 1984 rock & roll fable Streets of Fire. Albert explains, "When you see the reunion scene preceding this...wow, the power of that really kicks this song up a notch.

Earlier this month we brought you news on the plan by one of my favourite directors, Albert Pyun, to helm a sequel to his classic 80s Van Damme flick Cyborg. And now we have some more new on the film along with some new teaser art.
The film, titled Cyborg: Rise of the Slingers, comes from a screenplay is by Randall Fontana and Cynthia Curnan, and stars (s0 far) Sasha Mitchell, Michael Pare, and Olivier Gruner. The movie will chronicle the genesis of the Slingers who, if you remember the original flick, were guardian mercenaries in Cyborg. Dread Central also report that Pyun in the process of nailing down the project’s lead actress who will be revealed, along with the full cast roster, later this month.

Director Albert Pyun dropped us a line with an update on his upcoming Cyborg: Rise of the Slingers (formerly Red Moon) and included a bit of teaser art for us to share. He's in the process of nailing down the project's lead actress and promises to reveal that info next week along with the full cast roster.
What he could tell us in the meantime is that "the film is very nasty and pure horror. My first all-out horror film." Music to the ears, right?
The screenplay is by Randall Fontana and Cynthia Curnan, and confirmed cast members thus far include Sasha Mitchell, Michael Pare, and Olivier Gruner. Cyborg: Rise of the Slingers mixes steam and cyberpunk with post-apocalyptic vampire horror. It will chronicle the genesis of the Slingers, who were guardian mercenaries in Cyborg. And it will explain why the characters in Cyborg were named after musical gear.

Director Albert Pyun dropped us a line with an update on Cyborg: Rise of the Slingers (formerly Red Moon) noting that he's leaving the sword and sorcery elements behind and instead will be adapting the loose prequel to his 1989 Jean-Claude Van Damme vehicle Cyborg into the steampunk universe. He also included the film's revised artwork by Rob E. Brown.
Pyun expects to commence shooting November 28th in Las Vegas, Nevada. The screenplay is by Randall Fontana and Cynthia Curnan, and they're in talks with Kevin Sorbo as well as Roxy Gunn. If signed, the two will join Sasha Mitchell, Michael Pare, and Olivier Gruner. The lead female role has yet to be cast; they are looking at a couple of newcomers in Las Vegas to play the "meanest and most hard core radical action hero I've ever put on film," says Pyun.

Director Albert Pyun dropped us a line this week to show off the inked artwork (by Rob E. Brown) for his upcoming film Red Moon, which he describes as a post-apocalyptic fantasy with lots of violence and creatures. Read on for more details!

One of the earliest (and best) cinéma-vérité films to cross our desks was Albert Pyun's 2005 one-take wonder Infection, which was renamed Invasion (review here) for its DVD release, so you can bet our ears perked up today when we learned a sequel is on its way!
Here's what director Pyun told us, "We begin shooting Infection (aka Invasion) 2 in Nevada on March 28. The original cast is back (Jenny Dare Paulin, Norbert Weisser, Scott Paulin, Morgan Weisser, Alan Abelew) to continue the struggle against the spread of infection."
Pyun adds that additional casting is being done by Norbert Weisser and includes a much bigger cast and much more action and creatures than the original film.
He continues, "Again, it will be a single unedited shot that will follow the infection into a small town. It will be set in the time period between 1:40 Am (when the first film ended) and 3:00 Am.

Albert Pyun is extremely happy with how his sword and sorcery epic, Tales of an Ancient Empire, is shaping up. Below are some words he recently published on his official site:
"It’s clear to me that Tales of an Ancient Empire is by far the best film I have ever made. Yeah, I know I’ve said that before because each film I’ve made had some aspect, maybe it was a performance, a camera move, a turn of character, but there was always something, some moment, big or small that made it my best at the time. But looking at Tales from all sides and being as objective as I can possibly be, each moment of the film, consistently represents my best work.
How I know this as being true is that it doesn’t even seem like one of my films. No moment of cringe; no lapse in logic or sanity,...

If you're a fan of Cyborg (how can you not be?), you may have heard that director Albert Pyun's original vision was to make the post-apocalyptic flick into a dialogue-free opera shot in grainy black and white. Producers dismissed the idea, and instead, we got the wobbly, opera-free cry of anger: "Fenderrrrrr!" But wait -- all is not completely lost in the world of Cyborg opera!
Yesterday, I mentioned Albert Pyun's next film over at SciFi Squad -- a new post-nuclear action flick written by Cyborg scribe Kitty Chalmers alongside Rebecca Charles and Cynthia Curnan. The director was kind enough to comment, and when I mentioned the rock opera, he wrote: "It's weird because until they went into being sold, I was discussing with MGM bringing out the opera version on Blu-ray. I think it still will happen. I did get permission from MGM to do a few...

"It’s the underground cyberpunk world versus the surface tribes of mechanized warriors. In essence it’s software versus hardware." -- Albert Pyun

Pyun's new website has just gone live and on it he says he's heading back to his post-apocalyptic / cyberpunk roots to make the "ultimate post nuclear cyber punk action film." Not only that, but he got Cyborg writer Kitty Chalmers, Nemesis writer Rebecca Charles and Tales of Ancient Empire writer Cynthia Curnan to co-write it. F*ck. Yeah.
Here's what he says about the yet untitled project:

We're still waiting for Albert Pyun's Tales of an Ancient Empire to be released, but that's not stopping the busy director from looking ahead to his next project. He just updated his MySpace Blog with some news that has us more than a little intrigued. Read on for the details.
"We are beginning the early stages of prep next week on a new film and will begin shooting January 2. And yes, it revolves around vampires. But not the way you'd imagine. I can't say much yet except it's a hybrid of genres and will likely be shot in 3D. It's definitely going to be somewhat experimental -- if you can imagine a movie like 'Tales' crossed with 'Run Lola Run'. Female and male leads, more romantic with a cluster of superhuman villains trying to wreck their relationship. It's yet 'Untitled' until all the agreements are finalized this week.

Director Albert Pyun just passed along a new clip from his upcoming sword and sorcerer romp, Tales of an Ancient Empire and since he was so impressed with everyone's feedback on the first clip he wants even more.
The clip appears about 38 minutes into the film. A sister, Rajan, the town's bar owner (Janelle Taylor), and her daughter, Alana (Inbar Lavi), have now joined the growing band of warriors lead by Aedan (Kevin Sorbo) and Princess Tanis (Melissa Ordway) and Malia (Sarah Schultz).

Updates on three different projects have come in over the weekend via Twitter, and rather than do separate stories on each, we've got them all right here ... down & dirty, quick & easy ... just how we know you like it!
Last week we noticed a few stories pop up regarding the possibility of Scream 4 being in 3D. Not having any confirmation, we waited to hear more, which everyone did when Scream writer Kevin Williamson debunked the rumor as follows: "What is this Scream 4 in 3D? First I heard of it." Then, an hour later came, "Guys? Really? 3D? Nahhhhh." Hopefully he won't be pressured into changing his tune. We have enough 3D projects floating around out there already, right?

Director Albert Pyun (Cyborg, Nemesis) returns to the genre that launched his career in Tales of the an Ancient Empire, the unofficial sequel to his 1982 indie hit "The Sword and the Sorcerer." An extended clip, featuring fantasy veteran Kevin Sorbo, has appeared on the film's official site. In it, Sorbo does his best Han Solo impression as he haggles with the princess over payment for some mercenary services. The cinematography is probably the best thing about the clip. Everything else about the clip is fairly television quality, though I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more.
Synopsis:
The sword and sorcery epic, written by Cynthia Curnan, tells the story of a princess forced on a quest to recruit the greatest warriors of the ancient world to save her kingdom from a demonic sorceress. But the odyssey to find them reveals a secret past for all.

It's gone through a couple of cast modifications and a change in filming locations since we first heard about it back in April '08, but Tales of an Ancient Empire, Albert Pyun's follow-up to The Sword and the Sorcerer, is finally under way. And we've got your first look at some stills to prove it!
Tales now stars Melissa Ordway as Tanis, a princess who must find and unite the five greatest warriors of the world to save her kingdom from a demonic sorceress. But the odyssey to find them reveals a secret past for all. Two more pictures of Ordway can be found below along with (from left to right) Janelle Taylor, Kevin Sorbo, and Inbar Lavi. The last shot is a very rough, early composite of Tanis ready to do battle against whatever evil may come her way.

One new project that we've been keeping close tabs on is Albert Pyun's Road to Hell, an "unofficial" sequel to the 1984 Walter Hill classic Streets of Fire. Creepy and I got our hands on a preliminary cut a couple of weeks ago and are awaiting a more finished version from Pyun and screenwriter Cynthia Curnan for review.
In the meantime, those of you who live in or around Austin, Texas, will have a chance to see it for yourselves ... along with its inspiration. On Monday, September 22, the good folks at Fantastic Fest will be debuting Road to Hell at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema immediately following a screening of Streets of Fire. I wouldn't be too surprised to see Pyun there also along with a few of the cast members.
They're still calling it a "work in progress", but from what I've seen, it definitely captures the retro vibe of...

Cynthia Curnan, writer and one of the co-producers of the upcoming Road to Hell, dropped us a line today with an update on the status of the film. It's in the final stages of post-production with director Albert Pyun wrapping up his compositing work.
But that's not all! She also sent us a screen grab of the stunning Clare Cramer against one of the backgrounds employed in Road to Hell. Click the image to the right for the full version, and join me in anticipation of how it's all going to turn out.
Dread Central should be getting a screener to review within the next few weeks so hopefully the wait won't be long. In the meantime visit Road to Hell's official site for more info!
