After 25 years, Susana Gimenez, Argentina’s celebrated TV host, actress, model and entrepreneur, is set to make her hotly anticipated return to the big screen in a new Diego Kaplan comedy.
The still untitled film, penned by Kaplan and Pablo Minces, centers on a preeminent child psychologist who has her own struggles with her 43-year-old son who is reluctant to leave home. Principal photography is slated for October in Buenos Aires.
“I can’t believe I’m making a movie after all these years; I certainly wasn’t planning for it,” said Gimenez. “But Diego is a force of nature and a visionary. When he pitched the project to me, I just couldn’t resist it and jumped right in,” she added. Aside from starring in a host of film and TV series, Gimenez hosted a top-rated talk show likened to that of Oprah Winfrey or Italy’s Raffaella Carrà.

Diane Warren’s songwriting job for Tell It Like a Woman was simple: create a hymn for female empowerment.
“We tend to beat ourselves up a lot,” the veteran tune scribe said during a panel at Deadline’s Sound & Screen event. “Every now and then you have to just give yourself some f*cking applause, give yourself some love, give yourself some respect. Give it to yourself before you give it to someone else.”
Tell It Like a Woman is comprised of seven segments directed by female directors from different parts of the world. Genres include drama, comedy, docudrama and animation. “They are pretty powerful stories,” said Warren. “I wanted to write a song that could fit in all these various movies, which is basically just about empowerment. These are stories about strong women. I wanted the song to reflect that.”

Principal photography is underway on Argentine Sebastian Schindel’s romcom-spy adventure hybrid “Mienteme” (“Lie to Me”). Delayed slightly by the pandemic, filming of the Chilean-Argentine co-production has been taking place in and outside of Buenos Aires, now experiencing a summer heat wave.
Schindel is best known for psychological thrillers such as his upcoming film for Netflix, “La Ira de Dios” (“The Wrath of God”) apparently even darker than his previous films. “Mienteme” would be his first romcom. Schindel, who has a strong background in documentary filmmaking, said in a previous interview: “We are betting on playing the limits between reality and fiction.”

Chilean star writer José Ignacio “Chascas” Valenzuela, creator, showrunner and executive producer of hit Netflix series “Who Killed Sara?” has formed a production company with L.A.-based Argentine producer Lucas Akoskin of Aliwen Entertainment.
The new bi-coastal production company, called Malule Entertainment, will be based out of Los Angeles and Miami, where Valenzuela resides. Both partners have lived in the U.S. for more than 20 years.
Hinting at the type of films and TV series they’ll be producing, Valenzuela said: “I’m most interested in exploring the chance to collaborate with first-rate screenwriters and, at the same time, give emerging Latin American writers the opportunity to write hybrid stories that mix genres and formats.”
“Who said that a thriller cannot be written as if it were a melodrama? Why can’t a romantic comedy have, in addition to a powerful love story, a layer of suspense?” he pointed out.

Guido Rud’s FilmSharks International has snagged worldwide sales and remake rights to the Spanish movie spinoff of wildly popular French fictional comedy TV series, “Camera Café,” where a camera planted in a coffee machine captures the shenanigans and gossip chatter among office workers.
“Camera Café: La Pelicula” (“Camera Café” The Movie”) is an Atresmedia Cine, Estela Films and Warner Bros. co-production with the participation of Movistar Plus, which pre-bought Spanish pay TV rights. The comedy is the directorial debut of actor-writer-humorist Ernesto Sevilla (“Torrente 4”) and is also the feature debut of the film’s writer Raul Cimas, who has co-penned some Paramount Comedy Channel series with Sevilla.
The movie takes place in a dysfunctional office ten years after an economic crisis devastated the workplace where the most skilled people were fired. The least competent workers remain in charge and they will stop at nothing to keep their jobs.

Argentina’s Sebastian Schindel is venturing into unfamiliar territory with romcom-spy adventure hybrid “Mienteme” (“Lie to Me”), which he plans to shoot next year.
“Although most of my filmography falls into the “psychological thriller” genre, with a strong social context, what excites me most about making films is the possibility of exploring and experimenting in new areas,” said Schindel, adding: “I have always wanted to dive into the romantic comedy world for some time now, so ‘Mienteme’ is based on a cherished script I’ve been developing for the past few years.”
Schindel’s past films, including “The Crimes that Bind,” Argentina’s current submission to Spain’s Oscar equivalent, the Goyas, are screening on Netflix.
This time round, however, the Chilean-Argentine co-production has already been pre-financed through private equity and a Latin American distribution deal with Bf Paris, said co-producer-actor Lucas Akoskin. “We’d rather finance it through a...

Argentina’s preeminent writer-director Lucia Puenzo, who has proven her showrunner chops with “La Jauria” for Amazon Prime and eco-thriller series “Cromo,” has partnered with Gaumont, the producers of Netflix mega-hit “Narcos,” in a multi-project development deal.
Among the projects in the pact is “Futuro Desierto,” a near-future, dystopian thriller that turns on a robotics engineer who moves with his family to an isolated town in Patagonia where he is ordered to test the first humanoid robots in secret. Puenzo, whose notable film credits include the Cannes-selected “Xxy” and “The German Doctor,” will co-showrun and direct multiple episodes with her brother, Nicolas Puenzo, co-director of “Cromo” and “La Jauría.”

Nicole Kidman’s 2001 haunted house film “The Others,” directed by Chilean helmer Alejandro Amenabar, is getting a remake.
“The Others,” set in 1945 in a remote country house on the British island of Jersey, centered on Kidman’s character, Grace Stewart, discovering unknown “others” living in her home. One of her children says she has seen a group of people in the house several times — a man, a woman, an old woman and a child named Victor — who claimed “the house is theirs.”
“The Others” was a box office hit, grossing more than $200 million on a $17 million budget. The film won seven of Spain’s Goya Awards, including best film and best director for Amenabar.

Universal Pictures has optioned the rights to remake “The Others,” the 2001 Nicole Kidman horror film from director Alejandro Amenábar, and both Universal and Sentient Entertainment are currently in development on the remake.
In “The Others,” Kidman plays a woman in post-war 1945 who lives with her two children, both photosensitive to light and who now fear their home is haunted. The movie is a supernatural, psychological horror film, and in 2001 it was an unexpected international box office hit, grossing $209.9 million worldwide. It even scored Kidman a Golden Globe nomination and was nominated for nine Goya awards for the Spanish director Amenábar, even though it didn’t have any Spanish language in it.
It’s unclear how or if the film will be updated or how much it will draw from the original script.

We had two Palme d’Or winner (Time of the Gypsies in 1998; Underground in 1995) Emir Kusturica pegged to unveil his latest film, On the Milky Road at Cannes in 2014, but no such luck. It looks like Kusturica took about a year’s break in filming (which isn’t completely uncustomary for him), which resumed summer of 2014. Now, a poster has debuted and we’re thinking this should finally be ready for 2015, especially since Kusturica has recently announced plans for a new project, a French/Belarus co-production set to film mid 2015. The films is inspired by Kusturica’s short film Our Life, and consists of three stories: the first story is about a soldier with a task to get milk in the nearby village and take it to fellow soldiers. "Words with Gods" will be presented at the Los Cabos International Film Festival’s Galas Program, Friday, November 14th.
Alonso Aguilar-Castillo, Director of Los Cabos International Film Fest, says, “The Festival is an encounter dedicated to a shared vision between Mexico, the U.S. and Canada. During our Third Edition through a thoughtful and inspiring program, Los Cabos will be the perfect scenario to present the film "Words with Gods". Consisting of 9 short films created by some of the most celebrated directors of the moment, each tells a story where faith plays a central role. A dramatic spectrum of cultures with each director creating a dialogue with what is closest to them through their shorts.
Mexican filmmaker Guillermo Arriaga directed the story "Gods Blood", as well as being the creator of the concept on which the film is based; he is one of the producers along with Alex García and Lucas Akoskin. His take on atheism, “God’s Blood" sent a shiver of recognition down our spines when we previewed it at the Careyes Film Festival earlier this year.
Other filmmakers, Warwick Thornton questions the Aboriginal spirituality, Hector Babenco the Umbanda, Mira Nair Hinduism, Hideo Nakata Shinto Buddhism, Amos Gitai Judaism, Álex de la Iglesia Catholicism, Emir Kusturica Orthodox Christianity, Bahman Ghobadi Islam.
"Words with Gods" is a panoramic and global history that questions birth and death, determining decisions, and lost and found faith.
"Gods Blood" directed by Guillermo Arriaga.
The order of the short films in " Words with Gods" was curated by Peruvian writer, Mario Vargas Llosa and the music was created by British musician, Peter Gabriel.
"I am very happy to be a part of Los Cabos International Film Festival with this project. I believe this is currently one of the most important festivals, with more interest from entrepreneurs and the media. The synergy achieved with this project is very interesting and has reached enormous levels of expectation”, said the film’s producer, Alex Garcia.
Alex Garcia himself is one of Mexico’s most prolific producers. To be able to speak with him at Los Cabos will be one of my most unforgettable experiences.
In addition, Los Cabos International Film Festival Third Edition’s Mexican Tribute will be dedicated to Guillermo Arriaga.

Further details have emerged of the marketing and release plans for religious-themed portmanteau picture Words With Gods, which features contributions from such directors as Guillermo Arriaga, Emir Kusturica, Mira Nair and Hector Babenco.
The film, which has been screening out of competition in Venice, is produced by Arriaga along with Alex Garcia and Lucas Akoskin.
Speaking in Venice, Paula Alvarez Vaccaro, who produced Kusturica’s contribution, has revealed that there will be “a big inter-faith” campaign to accompany the distribution of the film. This is being coordinated through Vaccaro’s London-based company Pinball.
Sales are currently being handled by Garcia’s LatAm Pictures.
“We are going to tackle different territories and different areas with different activities,” Vaccaro explained. The intention is to create events around each short that will promote inter-faith dialogue and debate as well as educational activities.

Deadline revealed back in April that A Better Life star Demian Bichir was moving toward his feature directing debut on the indie Refugio. He’s set his cast—Eva Longoria, Jose Angel Bichir, and Jorge Perugorria (Strawberries And Chocolate)—and production is just getting underway in Mexico City. The film follows the title character, a young dreamer who’s born in the circus and embarks on a search to find his long lost true love. That character will be played at various points in his life by a series of actors including Demian Bichir himself. The majority of screen time goes to Jose Angel Bichir, who is the director’s nephew. Longoria plays a horse acrobat who joins the circus in Mexico trying to heal a broken heart. Stefanie Sherk, Ana Claudia Talancon, Arcelia Ramirez and Ludwika Paleta also star, and Julian Fidalgo will play the young Refugio in flashback scenes.
