Serial fans everywhere were in a flurry of excitement over the news that season one's subject Adnan Syed was granted a new trial a few months ago, however, it seems his legal team is facing yet another hurdle. Syed's attorneys filed court documents and issued a public statement urging the judge to dismiss prosecutor's claims to deny Syed's retrial, despite already ruling for a new trial back in June. "If the State's case against Syed is so strong—as they claim it to be—the State should retry the case," Syed's lead attorney, Justin Brown, said in a statement. "Give Syed a fair trial and let a jury decide." "My client has spent more than 17 years in...

Asia Chapman, an alibi witness for accused murderer and Serial subject Adnan Syed, is speaking out against recent claims by two former classmates, who have challenged her role in the case. Two graduates of Woodlawn High School in Baltimore, who are sisters, came forward with their claims in August, in sworn statements to the Maryland Attorney General's Office. They claimed that in 1999, shortly after Syed's arrest, Chapman (formerly Asia McClain) told them in a co-op class that she'd "make up a lie" to prove Syed didn't kill their classmate Hae Min Lee - Syed's ex-girlfriend. The sisters also said they...

Defense attorneys for Serial podcast subject Adnan Syed are fighting the Maryland attorney general's appeal of a ruling that vacated Syed's 2000 murder conviction for the murder of his ex-girlfriend and ordered him a new trial. In an application for a cross appeal filed Thursday, Syed's defense attorneys also say that if the Court of Special Appeals decides to hear the state's appeal, they want to appeal a separate aspect of the ruling by Judge Martin Welch concerning an alibi witness, Asia McClain. McClain testified at a February 2016 hearing that she was with Syed at a library during the time prosecutors...

Asia McClain, Alleged Alibi Witness in Adnan Syed Serial Case, Is 'Stunned' by Order for a New Trial
It was Thursday afternoon, as she lay in a Washington state hospital bed recuperating from a cesarean section, when Asia Chapman's phone started lighting up with Twitter and text notifications: Adnan Syed - her former high school classmate, convicted murderer and Serial subject - is getting a new trial, after his conviction was vacated Thursday. "I didn't think it was real," Chapman tells People. "I was stunned. I thought, 'Really?' " (She had just given birth to a son on Wednesday, her third child, and tweeted her surprise at the overlap.) Chapman is familiar to fans of the popular podcast under her maiden name,...

Adnan Syed, the subject of the popular podcast Serial who has been serving a life sentence in prison for the murder of ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee in 1999, had his conviction vacated Thursday and will get a new trial, according to court documents obtained by People. According to the court order granting a new trial, Judge Martin P. Welch cited "failure to contact a potential alibi witness" and failure to disclose evidence related to cell phone tower data as reasons for vacating the conviction. "It is finally ordered that Petitioner's request for a new trial is hereby granted," Welch wrote in his order.

Adnan Syed has been granted a new trial. The subject of Serial's first season had his day in court today, and after careful deliberation, a Baltimore judge has granted a new trial for the 36-year-old. Justin Brown, Adnan's attorney, took to Twitter to announce, "We won a new trial for Adnan Syed!!! #FreeAdnan." Justin Fenton, a reporter for the Baltimore Sun, added, "In judge's opinion, he says he is granting a new trial based on ineffective assistance of counsel for failing to cross on cell phone evidence." Adnan's father, Yusuf Syed, spoke to the newspaper, saying, "I had a feeling in my heart it was going to happen. We are just very...

Fueling the hopes of Serial subject Adnan Syed to win a new trial after he was found guilty of murdering his ex-girlfriend in 2000, a former prosecutor testified that the failure of Syed's original lawyer to pursue an alibi witness "takes away the confidence in the verdict." Dave B. Irwin, a former U.S. attorney who is now a Maryland criminal defense lawyer, took the stand in a Baltimore courtroom where Syed's new defense team hopes to convince a judge the verdict that locked Syed in prison 16 years ago was tainted by inept legal representation. (The hearing will continue through at least Monday.
