Drug trafficker John Gilligan in hospital after gun attack
One or Ireland's most notorious drug traffickers and the chief suspect in the murder of the journalist Veronica Guerin was in hospital on Saturday night after being shot twice in a gun attack while at a Christening party.
John Gilligan hid in a downstairs toilet after two masked men broke into the home and opened fire. The 61-year-old was hit in the leg and arm while attending what was believed to be a family celebration at his brother's house in Clondalkin, on the outskirts of Dublin. Police described the attack as an attempted murder.
Gilligan was released in October last year after serving 12 years of a 20-year term for masterminding a major operation to traffic cannabis into Ireland. It is understood that he had recently been warned about threats to his life and was reportedly targeted in an attempted attack in...

Los Angeles — Lindsay Lohan won't face prosecution over a nightclub manager's claims that the actress struck him with her sportscar due to lack of evidence and doubts about his credibility, prosecutors decided Friday.
Police had asked the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office to review whether Lohan should be charged with leaving the scene of an accident, but the office determined there was insufficient evidence to pursue a case. Police interviewed the manager, reviewed surveillance footage and looked at Lohan's Porsche and found no evidence that an accident had occurred.
Thaer Kamal, manager of the Hookah Lounge in Hollywood, accused Lohan of striking him with her Porsche early on March 14, just two weeks before the actress' supervised probation ended. A charge evaluation worksheet noted that although Kamal called 911, he refused medical treatment at the scene and told police he had been grazed by Lohan's car along his right leg.

Versatile director Joel Schumacher followed up his thriller Phone Booth with the gritty biopic Veronica Guerin. But was it a creative stretch too far?
"You'd do the same. If you saw those kids on the street, you would do the same."- Veronica
The Recap
Riding high on the wave of success of Phone Booth, Joel Schumacher's next film would see him taking on the tricky biopic genre. While not the obvious choice for such a project, he steamed ahead regardless, enlisting the help of über producer Jerry Bruckheimer (known mostly for action films). The finished piece probably wasn't what either of them were expecting.
Veronica Guerin (Cate Blanchett) was a crime reporter for the Irish Sunday Independent. Aware of how badly the illegal drugs trade in Dublin was effecting the lives of everyday people, especially the city's youth, she decided to investigate the problem further and expose those responsible.
