Originally printed in our Fall 2010 issue, we asked a number of leading independent producers about their producing models and how they’re finding everything from financing to material to office space. Lynette Howell has three titles in this year’s Sundance: Chris Kentis & Laura Lau’s Silent House, Azazel Jacob’s Terri and Andrew Okpeaha MacLean’s On The Ice.
How to pay oneself a salary, maintain an office and employ assistants? And embrace risky projects? For Lynette Howell the answer is staying in constant motion.
Raised in working class Liverpool, Lynette Howell decided to drop her British accent after just a few months in L.A. “I was tired of everyone asking me to repeat myself,” she says, but admits it returns when she steps onto U.K. soil or speaks to a fellow expatriate. Ryan Gosling began filming scenes in New York City for “Blue Valentine” earlier this month after joining the cast to star alongside Michelle Williams. The film is about a young contemporary married couple, and will chart the evolution of their relationship over a span of years by cross-cutting between time periods. Michelle Williams has also filmed scenes without Gosling but the two have now joined up to complete the film together.
The film is directed by Derek Cianfrance, with a screenplay written by Cianfrance, Joey Curtis and Cami Delavigne. Execitive Producer Doug Dey previously made the poignant indie drama “Half Nelson” with Gosling, for which he received an Oscar Nomination for Best Actor in 2007. Half Nelson Cinematographer Andrij Parekh is also signed on, so we wouldn’t be shocked to see Blue Valentine have a similarly gritty and observational style of photography.

NEW YORK -- ThinkFilm, Lifetime Networks and Netflix's Red Envelope Entertainment have jointly acquired the North American rights to the Felicity Huffman-Elle Fanning drama Phoebe in Wonderland for about $3 million.
Daniel Barnz's tale, which premiered in January at the Sundance Film Festival, follows a troubled girl (Fanning) who dreams of starring in her school production of Alice in Wonderland but gets sidetracked by her fantasy life and increasingly disturbing behavior. Patricia Clarkson, Bill Pullman and Campbell Scott also star.
The three companies will collaborate on the marketing of the film's theatrical release. ThinkFilm will distribute Phoebe theatrically in the fall, followed by simultaneous Netflix rentals and ThinkFilm retail DVD sales and rentals. Lifetime has exclusive TV rights to the film, which will be shown under the Lifetime Pictures banner in early 2009.
Phoebe premiered to mixed reactions at Sundance, with a number of execs saying the film was notable for Fanning's performance. It was produced by Ben Barnz and Silverwood Films' Lynette Howell and executive produced by Doug Dey and Chris Finazzo.

PARK CITY -- Phoebe in Wonderland reverberates with the frustration of a young girl who seeks refuge in a fantasy world when her parents and school fail her. A jarring and sweet depiction of disability, Phoebe should win hearts on the Art House circuit and appeal to female and family audiences on cable.
Angelic and talented Phoebe (Elle Fanning) has blessings and challenges: She is obsessively compulsive and blurts out inappropriate things. Her protective mother won't accept professional advice -- obsessive control disorder, Tourette's. Girls will be girls, she rationalizes. Yes, Phoebe's behavior confounds teachers and tears apart her family.
In this compelling drama, writer-director Daniel Barnz examines the disorienting and dispiriting world that kids often face: officious teachers, cruel classmates, confused adults. The mesmerizing performance of Fanning as the gifted and troubled young Phoebe sparks the picture. Charismatic and graceful, Fanning is wondrous. Patricia Clarkson as Phoebe's empathetic and inspiring drama teacher evinces the sympathetic fiber that only a person who also has suffered for being different can convey.
As the beleaguered and well-intentioned mother, Felicity Huffman crystallizes the frustrations and self-doubt of a loving mother, while Bill Pullman captures a father's feeling of helplessness.
Under Barnz's guiding directorial hand, technical contributions are masterful. Christophe Beck's score is aptly whimsical and fearsome, while Bobby Bukowski's smart visual compositions are similarly succinct.

- Last year, it surfaced on a couple of sites and was featured in Entertainment Weekly. The Black List is a top 10 best unproduced screenplays complied by (you fill in the blank) insiders at talent agencies, management companies, and film studios. 2 of last year’s top 3 are far from being shelved under a pile of other scripts – Things We Lost in the Fire is in post prod and the number 3 consensus pick Lars And The Real Girl is being produced by Sidney Kimmel Entertainment and is currently filming. Juno is lining up for a January shoot in Vancouver. Posted on the blog site www.spinandstir.com, this year the Top 10 list surfaces once again, however many of the scripts are already being produced by big studios. Since it comes from an undisclosed source it’s hard to take it at face value, but for the pure fun of it we
