At the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards on Feb. 24, Oscar frontrunner “Darkest Hour” won two of its three races: special makeup effects and best period/character makeup. It lost best period/character hairstyling to “I, Tonya.”
Among those films that “Darkest Hour” edged out for best special makeup effects was “Wonder,” one of its two Oscar rivals for Best Makeup & Hairstyling. That film contended on the contemporary side here and lost its bid for hairstyling to “Pitch Perfect 3″ and makeup to “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2.” The third Oscar nominee, “Victoria and Abdul,” was snubbed by the guild.

When you're the actor in a major Hollywood movie, it's important to step it up when attending the film's premiere. But when you're an actor in a juggernaut like Pitch Perfect 2, then creating an unexpected beauty look that stands out on the red carpet is compulsory. So who better to turn for a star-making red carpet 'do than the film's hair designer, Cheryl Marks? After all, the A-list stylist created hundreds of hair concepts for the beauty-fueled movie. To give Kelley Jakle, who played the role of Jessica in both films, a standout look, she created what she calls the Bella Bob—an illusionary style that both captures one of 2015's biggest hair trends and tricks us in to thinking...

Singing and dancing may take center stage in Pitch Perfect 2, but one of the most amazing stunts in the film was creating the hundreds of diverse hair looks for the Barden Bellas, their competitors and critics. That epic feat was seamlessly achieved by the film's hair department head, Cheryl Marks, who conceptualized every style from high-velocity curls to new-wave beehives. Now, as excitement builds for the film's release—and tonight's La premiere—Marks is busy prepping one of its stars, and herself, for the red carpet event and big reveal of some of the most daring Bella looks yet. What's it like to gear up for such a major affair? Here, Marks walks us through a day in the life...

Say what you want about Gail Abernathy-McKadden, but the Pitch Perfect 2 character knows how to express herself with style and swag. It may be over the top at times, but that's exactly why we love the quirky International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella commentator. She knows how to pump up the volume—especially with her hair! Fortunately, we were able to tap into the brilliant mind that created the movie's hair looks, Pitch Perfect 2 lead hair designer Cheryl Marks. Here, the master stylist shows us how to modernize one of Gail's most noteworthy looks—the braided mohawk. It may look complicated, but all that the updo requires is healthy hair, dry shampoo, a Dutch braid, a few...

This is the second year for the Makeup and Hairstylists Guild joining the awards game, and they've been a welcome addition to the circuit. They spread their nods thin across a number of categories, but it's a good window into what this branch digs, for sure. This year, the only two films on the Academy's bake-off list of finalists that didn't garner any recognition were "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and "Noah." Meaning "Foxcatcher," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Maleficent" and "The Theory of Everything" were each represented in one form or another. Meanwhile, "Guardians of the Galaxy" led with the most mentions at three, while "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Interstellar" and "Into the Woods" each got a pair. As previously announced, Oscar-winning make-up artist Rick Baker and Emmy-nominated hair stylist Kathryn Blondell will receive the Guild's Lifetime Achievement Awards. Check out the full list of nominees below,...
