His career is a testament to the pervasive appeal of ghazal, for Pankaj Udhas, among the foremost who brought the perceived elitist genre of music into the popular sphere, hailed well beyond its prime catchment area, but mastered the form with dedication and performed it with panache.
Pankaj Udhas, who passed away on Monday aged 72, is usually – and erroneously – seen as a purveyor of the ghazal’s “maikhana” tradition.
This is chiefly due to his famous renditions of “Mujhko yaaron muaaf karna, main nashe mein hoon”, “Thodi thodi piya karo”,”Sharab cheez hi aisi”, “Ek taraf us ka ghai ek taraf maikada”, “Sabko maloom hai main sharabi nahi” and several other vintage melodies, but there was more range to his velvet-rounded voice.
Recall the ebullient “Chandi jaisa rang hain tera”, the pensive “Kabhi saaya hai kabhi dhoop” or “Aap jinke kareeb hote hai”, the lightly mournful “Deewaron se milkar rona...

Pankaj Udhas earned his first accolade as a singer when he was 11 years old. He sang the patriotic song ‘Ae mere watan ke logon’ at a public event in his hometown Rajkot when the Sino-Indian War was raging in 1962, and he so impressed a member of the audience that he gifted the young singer what was then a princely sum of Rs 51.
Udhas, who passed into eternity on Monday, February 26, at the age of 72, however, had not planned to become a singer. He was training to play the tabla at the Sangeet Natya Academy in Rajkot, where he had been enrolled along with his brothers by his father, Keshubhai Udhas, a government official who had learnt to play the dilruba from Ustad Abdul Karim Khan.
Seeing his father play his favourite dilruba in his spare time inspired Udhas to pursue music seriously. His elder brothers, Manhar and Nirmal Udhas, also...

Birthday’s are indeed special and today we celebrate the anniversary of the man who told us the importance of boiled eggs, gave the youth a song etched in their personality as well as help Vin Diesel and his gang steal a flash drive. Yes, we’re talking about none other than the awesome Ali Fazal.
Be it his smile that melts our heart, or his charisma each time he comes on screen, here’s an actor who we simply can’t get enough of. With versatility being his strongest suit, we’ve seen him pack a punch as a gangster called Guddu Bhaiya, an Indian Muslim servant and many more.
Having turned 34 today, Fazal fans are just a week away from seeing their favourite star back on screen as he is all set to unleash hell on his enemies in the second season of Mirzapur. While we wait for...

The second combined ScreenSingapore/Asia TV Forum & Market (Atf) event wrapped with organisners at Reed Exhibitions saying attendance numbers were up by the second day of the three-day event.
“Last year we had 3,970-plus attendees and as of our second day [December 5], we had more than 4,300,” said Yeow Hui Leng, senior project director at Reed Exhibitions.
“The vibrancy we see in the market shows in terms of the market numbers and conference speakers. We’ve had positive vibes so far from the industry and the conferences and screenings were well-attended.”
With the film-based ScreenSingapore in its third year and Atf in its 14th, the market floor is still markedly television-heavy. News of the ScreenSingpore/Atf event combining forces with a revamped Singapore International Film Festival (Sgiff) from next year has given rise to guarded expectations for a more film-focused event.
This year’s ScreenSingapore/Atf played host to 1,126 companies – 553 of which were sellers and 573 were buyers – from a total...

New Delhi, June 30: It was sheer curiosity that led to a beautiful serendipity which has now become a mission for author-classical singer Vikram Sampath, who has created an archive of Indian classical music, Carnatic music, folk music and speeches from the pre-Independence era, digitised them and built a national treasure online.
The Archive of Indian Music(Aim) is a museum of sorts to listen to the golden voices of bygone era. The recordings span 1902 to 1952 and boast of many known and unknown names like Bhimsen Joshi, Devika Rani, Abdul Karim Khan, Hirabai Barodekar and Madurai Mani Iyer among others. It can be accessed at www.archiveofindianmusic.org.
"I was curious to listen to the voice of legendary singer Gauhar Jaan.

This restrained portrayal of Queen Victoria's relationship with her gallant gillie puts the Victorian gossips to shame
Mrs Brown (1997)
Director: John Madden
Entertainment grade: B
History grade: B+
Queen Victoria was widowed in 1861. Four years after Prince Albert's death, she became attached to her gillie, John Brown.
Taste
John Brown (Billy Connolly) joins Victoria's staff at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, then moves with her to Balmoral in Scotland. The film invents some Upstairs Downstairs drama, but sticks approximately to the facts. The only conspicuous error is that the Balmoral sets are far too tasteful. Balmoral, like Osborne, was bought and decorated by Victoria and Albert as a couple, and its interiors were famously hideous. All the wood was painted dark ginger, fake thistles abounded, and anything that stayed still long enough was covered in violently clashing tartans – including curtains, carpets, furniture, linoleum and small children.

April 19, 2010: Aditya Chopra’s forthcoming project, Badmaash Company, had a character based on scamster Abdul Karim Telgi. However, in order to avoid controversy, the character was done away with.
Abdul Karim Telgi was behind the multi-crore stamp paper scam and was arrested by the Mumbai Police in 1991. He is still in jail.
The filmmaker realized that the sequence featuring the character could create trouble for his film and deleted all the required parts.
Telgi’s character had been essayed by a junior artiste, who had shot his scenes with Shahid in Mumbai. Though a light-hearted.
