You could call it the “Netflix effect.” With the rise of the global VOD giant and its increasingly voracious appetite for nonfiction films, the documentary industry is anticipating a busy spring season at the Tribeca Film Festival and Hot Docs, North America’s largest documentary festival and marketplace.
But it’s not just Netflix, say industry insiders. The number of active buyers for documentary films suggests there’s an enthusiasm for independent nonfiction cinema that goes beyond the VOD giant.
On the eve of Tribeca, three high-profile documentaries have already found buyers: National Geographic acquired the coal-mining expose “From the Ashes,” and Gravitas Ventures bought theatrical and streaming rights to two films already partnering with CNN Films: “Elian,” the story of Cuban child émigré Elian Gonzalez, and Impact Partners’ “The Reagan Show,” a freshly relevant archival-driven doc about the staging of the former President.

It was pretty much business as usual on The X Factor tonight as the Six Chair Challenge reached its nail-biting conclusion – but one element of the show was noticeably lacking.
Viewers were united in their confusion when they took to Twitter to ask a vital question: where the heck was Caroline Flack?
It certainly didn't seem to go unnoticed that the majority of the show was presented by Olly Murs, flying solo as his co-host was nowhere to be seen.
Some weren't particularly happy about Flack not performing her presenting duties, with one viewer tweeting: "Wonder how much Caroline Flack gets paid for 'presenting' on the X Factor for about 17 seconds each episode".
While others joked that Flack had more reason to kick off about lack of airtime than contestant Mason Noise, with one user tweeting: "Can't believe Mason Noise kicking off about getting 47 seconds on the x factor, that's...

This past weekend saw Furious 7 skid into theaters across the globe and rustle up a tidy sum at the box office. With its current haul roughly hovering around the $350 million mark, that sort of remuneration means future installments practically greenlight themselves. Of course, it’s no secret that the high-octane gas-guzzling sequel would not be the final outing for Toretto’s gang. Star Vin Diesel is betting on more sequels, after his recent promotional stint on the chat show circuit saw him announce the importance of Kurt Russell’s character in Fast & Furious 8.
The strong likelihood of all the actors – except for the sadly departed Paul Walker – reprising their roles for the next sequel bodes well for Universal. Considering their importance to Dom’s familial inner circle, we’ll be seeing Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Jordana Brewster, Ludacris and Dwayne Johnson back to wage war against another crew of swarthy opponents.
