Neon has bought North American rights to “The Unknown” (“L’Inconnue”), the hotly anticipated next movie from “Anatomy of a Fall”’s Oscar-winning co-writer Arthur Harari.
As revealed by Variety earlier this week, the movie will star Léa Seydoux (“Dune 2”) and is being represented in international markets. Harari is rolling off of “Anatomy of a Fall” which he co-wrote with director Justine Triet, abd won an Oscar, two Golden Globes, a BAFTA and the Palme d’Or at last year’s Cannes Film Festival.
The deal was negotiated by Neon’s president of acquisitions and production Jeff Deutchman with producer Nicolas Anthomé on behalf of the filmmakers, and marks Neon’s second collaboration with Harari following last year’s “Anatomy of a Fall” which Neon acquired out of Cannes in 2023 before it won the Palme d’Or for that year. This deal further cements Neon’s commitment to bringing top-of-the-line international cinema to U.

Something doesn’t seem right in this tranquil vacation paradise. Gretchen is plagued by strange noises and bloody visions until she discovers a shocking secret that also concerns her own family.”

Neon has acquired the North American rights to Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall,” which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday and won praise for its mixture of family story and courtroom drama. It is Neon’s second acquisition at the festival, following the animated feature “Robot Dreams.”
The deal was made by Neon President of Acquisitions Jeff Deutchman and mK2 Films managing director and head of international sales Fionnuala Jamison.
Neon is currently on a winning streak at Cannes, having distributed the last three Palme d’Or winners: “Parasite” in 2019, “Titane” in 2021 and “Triangle of Sadness” in 2022. (The festival did not take place in 2020 because of the pandemic.)
In a press release announcing the acquisition, Triet said, “Neon deeply understood the story and what we were aiming to accomplish, and we are thrilled they will bring the film to the widest possible audience.”

Neon has acquired the North American rights to Anatomy of a Fall (Anatomie d’une chut), which premiered in the competition lineup of the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday.
Anatomy of a Fall, written and directed by French filmmaker Justine Triet (Sibyl) and co-written by Arthur Harari (Onoda: 10,000 Nights in the Jungle), marks Neon’s second acquisition at the festival following Pablo Berger’s animated Robot Dreams.
Neon films have scored three consecutive Palme d’Or awards in Cannes thanks to Parasite in 2019, Titane in 2021 and Triangle of Sadness in 2022.
Anatomy of a Fall is a thriller that follows Sandra (Sandra Hüller), a German writer, her French husband, Samuel, and their 11-year-old son, Daniel, who live a secluded life in a remote town in the French Alps. Neon said Tuesday that it has acquired North American rights to Justine Triet’s Cannes Competition feature Anatomy of a Fall.
The move marks Neon’s second acquisition of a Cannes title, following Pablo Berger’s animated Robot Dreams, acquired just before the festival, at what has been a busy time for the distributor whose Cannes credits include the past three Palme d’Or winners Triangle of Sadness, Titane and Parasite.
Anatomy of a Fall follows Sandra (Sandra Hüller), a German writer, her French husband Samuel, and their eleven-year-old son Daniel who live a secluded life in a remote town in the French Alps. When Samuel is found dead in the snow below their chalet, the police question whether he committed suicide or was killed. Samuel’s death is treated as suspicious, presumed murder, and Sandra becomes the main suspect.

It’s been a couple of months, but the Sundance sales are still slowly chugging along, and today it’s for one of IndieWire’s favorites out of the festival. Neon has landed the North American rights to “Eileen,” the drama starring Thomasin McKenzie and Anne Hathaway.
William Oldroyd (“Lady Macbeth”) directed “Eileen,” based on Ottessa Moshfegh’s 2015 novel of the same name. The project was considered one of the hotter and more acclaimed titles out of Sundance, and Neon says the distributor beat out several other buyers out of the festival. But based on a prior source who told IndieWire that the film came at a budget of $16 million, that could have explained why it took some time for this one to close. No acquisition price for the film was disclosed.

Neon has purchased North American rights to “Eileen,” an adaptation of Ottessa Moshfegh’s acclaimed novel of the same title.
The movie debuted to strong reviews at Sundance, but its high price tag, said by sources to be in the range of $15 million, made it difficult for the film to score a distribution deal. It languished on the market for roughly two months as several studios kicked the tires. This despite the combined star wattage of “Jojo Rabbit’s” Thomasin McKenzie and Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway and a twisty plot. The rest of the ensemble includes Shea Whigham, Marin Ireland, and Owen Teague. William Oldroyd (“Lady Macbeth”) directs from a script by Moshfegh who adapted “Eileen” with Luke Goebel. Neon will release the film theatrically this fall.
The deal was negotiated by Jeff Deutchman for Neon, WME Independent and Fifth Season. Financial details of the sale were not revealed.

Mia Goth (Pearl) and Alexander Skarsgård (The Northman) star.
In the film, “While staying at an isolated island resort, James (Alexander Skarsgård) and Em (Cleopatra Coleman) are enjoying a perfect vacation of pristine beaches, exceptional staff, and soaking up the sun. But guided by the seductive and mysterious Gabi (Mia Goth), they venture outside the resort grounds and find themselves in a culture filled with violence, hedonism, and untold horror. A tragic accident leaves them facing a zero tolerance policy for crime:
“Either you’ll be executed, or, if you’re rich enough to afford it, you can watch yourself die instead.”

Infinity Pool, a new sci-fi thriller from director Brandon Cronenberg, will be screening at the Sundance Film Festival in January – and the festival’s official website has revealed the first image from the film! Four weeks ago, we heard that Infinity Pool, a new sci-fi thriller from director Brandon Cronenberg, the son of the legendary David Cronenberg, had been slapped with an Nc-17 by the ratings board at the Motion Picture Association. The reason given for that rating was “some graphic violence and sexual content”. The ratings announcement came with the note that the makers of Infinity Pool intend to appealed to the Classification and Rating Administration appeals board in an attempt to get the Nc-17 turned into an R. And apparently that appeal didn’t go their way, because it has now been announced that Infinity Pool was edited in order to receive an R rating.
The new rating announcement says that Infinity Pool was been rated R for “graphic violence, disturbing material, strong sexual content, graphic nudity, drug use and some language.” Which makes it sound even harsher than the Nc-17 cut.

As we told you last month, Antiviral and Possessor director Brandon Cronenberg‘s next is the sci-fi movie Infinity Pool for Neon and Topic Studios, which received an “Nc-17” rating from the MPA for “Some graphic violence and sexual content.” We also told you that an appeal was underway, and this week the MPA has finally handed the film an “R” rating.
The film’s previous “Nc-17” rating has been voided and the film has been re-edited a bit to achieve the “R” rating. This edited version of Infinity Pool has been rated “R” for…
“Graphic violence, disturbing material, strong sexual content, graphic nudity, drug use, and some language.”
The good news? It sounds like the film will remain violent and boundary-pushing!
Stay tuned for more as we learn it.
