This Blu is a fascinating hybrid of experimental film and historical documentary by Bill Morrison of Decasia fame. Lost film history and the vanished era of the Dawson Gold Rush blend into one story — all touched off by the discovery of tons of rare silent film, buried in the cold ground of the Canadian Yukon. And Donald Trump’s in there too! In the show, not the snow.

International Film Festival Rotterdam (Iffr) to deal with the zeitgeist topic in “a playful and provocative way”.
This is a year in which gender discussions have moved right into the mainstream. Eddie Redmayne is Oscar nominated for his performance as a transgender artist in The Danish Girl. Catilyn Jenner, previously known as Bruce Jenner, has been a source of endless fascination to the gossip columnists in the Us while boxing promoter Kellie Maloney (formerly Frank Maloney) has provoked plenty of discussion in the British press.
In Iffr sidebar He/She/X, programmer Inge ds Leeuw aims to look at gender issues in a playful and provocative way.
The programme consists of features and shorts all addressing ideas of “gender fluidity.” There is also an accompanying exhibition featuring videos and instalations, including a “Gender Swap Machine”.
“It has been so popular right now. You see it in films, television and in the mainstream,” de Leeuw said...

Funding and financing an independent film takes almost as much creativity as making the film, according to a panel of representatives from The Tribeca Film Fund, Kickstarter and Cinereach, moderated by producer Madeleine Molyneaux. Filmmakers from outside the U.S. -- especially those in Europe -- benefit from government support and co-production treaties, but Americans are essentially on their own and it's a complicated world to navigate. Every funding organization has specific requirements and offers a range of funding and support services. According to Tamir Muhammad, Director of Feature Programming, the Tribeca Film Fund gives out $6 million a year in grants of between $15,000 and $100,000 for fiction and non-fiction films and new media through its various funds, among them the Tfi Sloan Filmmaker Fund, for projects that deal creatively with scientific, mathematical or technological subjects; the Gucci Tribeca Documentary Fund; and Tribeca All Access, for filmmakers...

North American premiere
Directed By: Kevin Jerome Everson
Producer: Madeleine Molyneaux

Trailer
With a filmmaking style that draws upon fiction, documentary and experimental traditions, filmmaker Kevin Jerome Everson deftly explores aspects of the African American experience in critically acclaimed work that is as likely to be seen in an art museum as at a film festival.
For his most recent feature (he has also directed over 70 short films), Everson turns to the community of Westport, Miss., where the nearly annual flooding of the Tombigbee River has touched everyone, including Everson's own family. In 1973, the raging waters threatened to wash away the entire town, along with countless family heirlooms and photo albums. Today, those waters can still trouble, but they also unite the community, bound together by flood barriers and baptisms.

Mon, Jun 17th 7:20pm, Regal Cinemas 13
---The Act of Killing
International Showcase
(Denmark, 2012, 125 mins, Dcp)
In Indonesian with English subtitles
Directed By: Joshua Oppenheimer, Christine Cynn
Executive Producers: Werner Herzog, Errol Morris, André Singer, Torstein Grude, Bjarte Mørner Tveit, Joram ten Brink
By turns chilling, surreal and philosophical, this debate-worthy documentary revisits modern Indonesia's brutal origins by inviting those who mass-slaughtered ethnic Chinese, alleged Communists and intellectuals in the 60's to re-enact their long-ago killings in elaborate tableaux evoking classic movie genres. At the center of directors Joshua Oppenheimer and Christine Cynn's bold experiment in hellish nostalgia are gangster/paramilitary leader Anwar Congo and his followers, proud nationalists with cinema-inspired visions of themselves, who are nonetheless seen as heroes in their country today. But as set-designed, costumed pretend violence for the cameras sparks further recollections of death squad protocol, the weight of remembered atrocities takes its toll, particularly on dream-haunted Anwar.
Early screenings of this disturbing, one-of-a-kind meditation on history, sanctioned evil and self-mythologizing, so galvanized Werner Herzog and Errol Morris that they became executive producers.

For almost two decades I’ve been traveling to the International Film Festival Rotterdam immediately following Sundance, struggling to keep my jet lag at bay while I attend a few Cinemart meetings, hit the informal but productive Cinemart cocktail hours, and delve into the fest’s always excellent and eclectic program. This year several fellower Sundancers made the trip as well, including sales agent Ryan Kampe, producer Adele Romanski, the Ifp’s Amy Dotson, the Sundance Institute’s Anne Lai, and director Terrence Nance, whose An Oversimplification of Her Beauty was programmed here and was one of the Park City’s true discoveries. Above is Nance, at right, pictured on the ground floor of the Doelen with Festival Director Rutger Wolfson.
“Rotterdam is the only festival with a 24-hour deejay,” Nance quipped to me. While I haven’t stumbled into the Doelen at 5:00 Am, Nance is not far from the truth.
