Actress Chloë Sevigny is nothing if not a chameleon. A former New York club kid turned actress, Sevigny has shown a fondness for offbeat indie projects, such as Gummo and Demonlover, and mainstream fare like Shattered Glass and Big Love. But almost everything she's done so far has an edge to it, and her latest project is no different.
In the upcoming British series Hit and Miss, Sevigny plays a pre-op transsexual hitman…or is it hitwoman? Whatever. The series comes from Paul Abbott, creator of Shameless, the British series recently Americanized for Showtime. Variety reports that Hit and Miss "embraces such themes as family, sexual identity and murder" and was written by "short-film writer and director Sean Conway." The series, which is already filming in Manchester, England, will be directed by Hettie McDonald, a British television veteran who previously worked on shows including Doctor Who and Law & Order: UK.

LONDON -- Kids entertainment veteran Peter Orton, founder and chairman of HIT Entertainment, has died after a long struggle with cancer, it was disclosed Thursday. He was 64.
HIT, the company that created "Bob the Builder" and became the U.K.'s leading preschool program producer, originally was the distribution arm of the Jim Henson Co.
Orton, one of the most colorful and enthusiastic media entrepreneurs in the U.K., was behind the launch of a range of global preschool TV franchises, including "Pingu", "Angelina Ballerina" and "Kipper".
"He managed to be one of those very rare executives who could be creative- and business-minded," said British Sky Broadcasting deputy managing director Sophie Turner Laing, one of HIT's original co-founders, who began her career working with Orton at Henson.
Originally launching HIT on the basis of distribution rights to 60 episodes of "Alvin and the Chipmunks", Orton built a programming stable of preschool TV brands as well as a hugely successful licensing and merchandising business that eventually became the growth engine for the business.

LONDON -- ITV executive chairman Michael Grade is set to give the keynote address at this year's RightsLab confab in London, organizers said Tuesday.
Sponsored by indie producers trade body Pact, the June 14 conference aims to get chins wagging about cross-platform exploitation.
Grade will use his keynote to talk about "the creative regeneration of ITV" and the opportunities for independent producers, Pact said in a statement.
Other high-profile speakers on tap include AOL's Niall McOnegal, BSkyB's Sophie Turner Laing, Peter Bazalgette from Endemol, Patrick McKenna from Ingenious, Peter Bennett-Jones from PBJ Management, RDF Comedy's Zad Rogers and Lovefilm's Mark Livingstone.
Said Pact chief executive John McVay: "Producers are now faced with a matrix of new distribution and revenue opportunities for their programs -- from download-to-own to VOD to mobile TV. It's an exciting but complex new business environment. RightsLab is a must-attend for any production company with commercial content because it will help them not only understand these new platforms but also build strategies to best maximize their content and revenues."
RightsLab has cash backing from Creative London, a part of the Mayor's London Development Agency.

LONDON -- Satcaster British Sky Broadcasting has signed a three-year output deal with Spyglass Entertainment for pay television, pay-per-view and subscription-based VOD rights, newly appointed director of Sky Movies Ian Lewis said Thursday.
The deal covers as many as 15 Spyglass titles over a three year-period beginning in 2008. The company is home to such hits as "Seabiscuit", "Memoirs of a Geisha" and "The Sixth Sense".
The agreement covers both pay TV rights for Sky Movies, PPV rights for Sky Box Office and the option for SVOD rights. Titles will be available in standard and high-definition formats, and the HD versions will be broadcast on Sky's two dedicated HD film channels.
Lewis takes over some of the duties of former Sky networks deputy managing director Sophie Turner Laing, who was promoted to BSkyB managing director of entertainment this year.
In a statement, Spyglass joint CEOs Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum said Sky was "the perfect home" for Spyglass content.
"Sky's continued success in marketing and promoting movies in the new technological world makes it the perfect home for our movies.
