The long-awaited Mass Effect Legendary Edition collection has found itself at the center of a rather strange controversy that has left some gamers claiming the classic RPGs have been censored.
In an interview with Metro, BioWare project director Mac Walters addressed some of the ways that the team is using the Legendary Edition to fix certain aspects of the original Mass Effect games that haven’t aged well. Notably, he revealed that the team is especially interested in remedying some of the issues that left the original female avatar for Commander Shepard feeling like an afterthought.
“So a male Shepherd animation would have him sitting with his legs quite wide open with a low camera where, if you were wearing a skirt, it would be a bit unflattering,” Walters explains. “So we can’t necessarily change that animation, but you can raise that camera up slightly to reduce the problem.

BioWare and EA have shared more information about their inevitable (but still welcome) recent announcement that they intend to remaster the Mass Effect trilogy and re-release the whole thing as part of a new package called Mass Effect Legendary Edition.
As revealed by Game Informer, this new edition of the game will not only feature all the single-player content seen in the original trilogy (including all promo items and content from over 40 Dlc releases) but will enhance their visuals in what seem to be significant ways. As showcased in this comparison shot, the original Mass Effect will be the biggest beneficiary of this technology overhaul:
We know that you’ll be able to experience Mass Effect Legendary Edition for yourself when the game is released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on May 14. What we don’t know is whether or not you’ll ever be able to experience this collection on Nintendo Switch.

BioWare still wants to make more Mass Effect games, even while it's busy with Anthem and Dragon Age 4.
While BioWare is currently busy with the upcoming release of Anthem, a new loot shooter that lets players team up online to explore a dangerous alien world full of monsters and secrets, the studio hasn't forgotten its other beloved sci-fi franchise, Mass Effect. In fact, according to at least two developers at BioWare, the company is still very interested in creating more adventures within that universe.
In a larger piece about BioWare's recent work, Polygon talked to Mike Darrah, the game's exec producer, as well as studio head Casey Hudson about the state of the Mass Effect franchise, specifically whether there's more coming from the series down the line.
“We’re definitely not done with Mass Effect," Darrah said. "There’s a lot of stories to be told. We...

Mass Effect: Andromeda looks set to continue using many of the features that made the original trilogy so successful, but there’s one major component that won’t be returning for the next entry in the sci-fi series. Paragon and Renegade options – decisions that the player’s Commander Shepard could make during conversations that determined his or her moral leanings – will be done away with in Andromeda, with BioWare instead opting to go with a new system entirely to replace it.
According to comments made by creative director Mac Walters to Official Xbox Magazine (via GamesRadar), player choice in Andromeda will focus around whether you disagree or agree with that various characters you engage in conversation with. He said:
What we have now is based more around agreeing and disagreeing. The reason I like that is because in the trilogy it’s like, ‘I’m gonna play Paragon,’ and then...

Bioware's creative director says that the studio isn't quite done with this franchise.
We have the release of Mass Effect: Andromeda to look forward to in March 2017, but beyond that, and a few multimedia spin-offs related to Andromeda, the future becomes a little less certain.

BioWare creative director recently sent out the following tweet to clarify whether Andromeda is the end for the Mass Effect franchise. As you might expect, the answer's a resounding no:

BioWare is ready to break new ground with the release of Mass Effect: Andromeda.
Nipping at the heels of yesterday’s grand unveiling, one which neatly aligned with N7 Day, Creative Director Mac Walters spoke to Game Informer about moving on from the original trilogy, and why he considers Andromeda to be a contained story.
Much of that comes down to the all-new setting, of course, but as more details begin to pour onto the interwebs, we’ve learned that Mass Effect: Andromeda takes place around the year 2785, a full 600 years after the events that transpired in ME3. That means due to the nature of space travel between galaxies, the core characters of BioWare’s sequel will be blissfully unaware of Commander Shepard and the Reaper war by the time Andromeda begins.
Per Game Informer:
“At the end of this, we want it to feel like a story has completed.

Fresh off of the latest look at Mass Effect: Andromeda at yesterday’s PlayStation Meeting, the official UK PlayStation YouTube channel has posted a video interview with BioWare director Mac Walters, and it should interest those curious about the series’ new lead, Ryder.
It was previously confirmed that the successor to Commander Shepard’s role will once again be a customizable male or female character, but that concept will have a unique twist this time around. Walters elaborated that after choosing a gender for Ryder, the game will incorporate the other version as a non-playable sibling that factors into the plot. Other members of the Ryder family will also appear to some extent, as it was revealed that the N7-clad character showcased in the game’s E3 2015 was the father of both siblings.

A new commentary about the 4K trailer tells us a bit about the characters we will be following in Mass Effect: Andromeda.
Creative director of the game, Mac Walters, explained in the video above that the male and female versions of the main character will appear in the game at the same time. The main character will have the last name Ryder and similar to Shepard in previous titles you can customize a male or female character to your liking. The other will then become your brother or sister.
"What a lot of people don't know, little surprise here, is that these two are brother and sister," Walters said (via Polygon). "And they both exist in the game world at the same time. So if you're playing as the sister Ryder, female Ryder, your brother is somewhere in the universe."

If you intend to continue your adventures in the Mass Effect universe next year with Mass Effect: Andromeda, don’t expect the fourth game in the series to carry over any choices you made in the original trilogy, especially where the ending to 3 is concerned.
Speaking to Eurogamer (via VideoGamer), BioWare boss Aaron Flynn and creative Mac Walters told the site that, while Andromeda will take into account the events that you experienced in the first three games and “remain intact in the canon of the universe”, they want to present it in a way that “allows a new story to begin”, so opted not to acknowledge the final choice players made with Commander Shepard.
We acknowledged it in the endings of Mass Effect 3 and I think that’s where we want to leave it for now.

These days, it feels like everything pop culture gets about a half dozen bits of spinoff media, from comics and books to video games. With media corporations focusing on transmedia synergy (selling different stories from the same intellectual property (IP) in different formats to get more money), it seems like you can’t enjoy a TV show, movie, or a video game without having to read or see something else that explains something important. At some point, these tie-in media gain a life of their own, growing faster than their parent media and ballooning into their own private universes.
The science fiction genre is a breeding ground for these “expanded universes.” Hugely popular franchises like Star Trek, Star Wars, Halo, and Dr. Who often come with fans clamoring for more material and IP owners annually crank out novels and comics to feed that demand. Less than 5% of the total fanbase usually know about these works,...

Foundation's initial issue was all about origins and where characters, such as the main character Rasa, started. Issue 2 however is quite the opposite of that, and starts to solidify its tie to the Mass Effect universe. The missing ingredient was everyone's favorite krogan, Wrex. Issue 1 was solid overall, but only felt connected due to its numerous references, while 2 feels as if it stepped out of the game due to how familiar Mac Walters is in writing Wrex. His voice is pitch perfect, so much so that when he calls someone a stunted pyjak I hear Steven Barr's voice. Urdnot splits the book with Rasa and Kai leng, who, surprise surprise, is just as much of a tool in the books as he was in the games. Seeing Rasa interact with Wrex, even in the from afar way its done for most of the issue, was the highlight, and by...

Mass Effect: Foundation is the new series from Dark Horse Comics that happens to take place around the same time as the original Mass Effect trilogy (yeah buddy, that's called future-proofing) and features some ties to the final Dlc pack for Mass Effect Citadel. Issue 1 takes place on a mining facility, and is sadly what you would expect from a facility of this ilk. Workers of all ages, races, and genders working in subpar conditions, and nary a twinkie in sight (which is really the most wrong part about all of this).
The story picks up with an unknown agent who is tracking down a man named Roth, and along the way decides to come to a child's rescue and end up with a pretty useful sidekick. The pace is quite fast, but Walters manages to evoke compassion for the child, which is impressive...

The upcoming series will be based on the March 5 "Citadel" Dlc for "Mass Effect 3," Dark Horse announced this weekend during the Emerald City Comic-Con.
"Mass Effect 2" and "3" lead writer Mac Walters will be handling story chores starting in July with Omar Francia handling art. Walters has written four other miniseries set in the "Mass Effect" universe (the four-issue "Homeworlds" was the most recent), so at this point, he's an old hand at bringing the games into comics.

BioWare and Electronic Arts have announced the final batches of downloadable content for “Mass Effect 3”: “Citadel” is a single-player campaign expansion, while “Reckoning” is a multiplayer pack containing new weapons, maps, and skins.
Like all multiplayer updates so far, “Reckoning” will be free, but “Citadel” will run to the tune of $14.99, or 1200 Microsoft Points on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Neither the press release or official statements on the game’s forums mention the Wii U version of the game, which launched with some Dlc, but not “Leviathan” or “Omega.”
“Reckoning,” introduces new character classes to “Mass Effect 3”’s co-operative, Horde-like multiplayer section. In addition to the debut of the Krogan Warlord, Geth Juggernaut, Female Turian Raptor, Talon Mercenary, and Alliance Infiltration Unit, “Reckoning” features new weapons and equipment mods as well. “Mass Effect” producer Michael Gamble tweeted this picture out yesterday, noting that this “does not look like a guy you’d want to mess with.”

How big? According to Eurogamer, big enough to require an eight-person writing team which will include lead writer Mac Walters. The untitled Dlc is being developed by BioWare's Edmonton studio, and according to one of the company's designers, that number represents pretty much the entire writing team there.
But BioWare's not just throwing a bunch of writers at the next story set (presumably) in and around "Mass Effect 3."
Seth Green is making his "Mass Effect 3" Dlc debut in a return to his role as Normandy pilot/resident joker, Joker. Also returning is "Mass Effect 3" composer Sam Hulick, whose work can also be found in "Baldur's Gate" and "Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad" as well as "Mass Effect 2."
So what will the next piece of Dlc entail? It's anyone's guess, but each one has dealt with the same problem of getting their hooks into a player who may or may...

As you dig into Mass Effect 3, you'll find the game has quite a few call-outs to events that happened between the second and third games in Bioware's sci-fi trilogy. Conveniently, these events happened in the Dark Horse-published comic tie-ins and more conveniently still, we've got details on the three trades after the jump.

Videogames used to be so simple, right? You’d blast space bugs from the safe, third-person viewpoint of a starship. Or dodge hammers and barrels thrown at you by a psychotic simian. But now the medium has matured to the point that it encompasses incredible diversity and literary ambition. If, as my colleague Darren Franich suggests, Mass Effect 3 represents the more ambitious end of videogame prose — interactive experiences governed by rich, novelistic storytelling — then Journey, due from provocative boutique thatgamecompany for PlayStation March 13, is poetry. Mass Effect 3 is to Journey what James Cameron is to Terrence Malick.
Journey is pretty much self-explanatory.

You could argue that videogames don’t really need stories. After all, the whole medium was built on abstraction mixed with semi-hallucinogenic non sequitur. Pac-Man needs to eat, but colorful ghosts are making his life difficult. Mario is trying to save the princess, but homicidal turtles are making his life difficult. Those Tetris blocks are trying to align themselves efficiently, but gravity is making their life difficult. And there are plenty of modern masterworks that imitate those earlier games’ minimalism: Indie platformers like Braid or Limbo, artsy cult hits like Ico or Dark Souls. These very different games share some...

BioWare Mass Effect 3
I’m going to admit something here. I really don’t like Star Wars. Here’s the thing: There are certain stories that work well as videogames, just as there are stories that work well as movies or films. Space operas, with their seemingly infinite room for expansion, endless idiosyncratic planets and funny-looking aliens, and waves of lore and technobabble, make more sense to me as games.
This is what BioWare must have realized when it created...

There’s a popular theory that — for videogames to evolve — they should become more cinematic and/or novelistic, with emotionally realistic characters undertaking a classical hero’s journey in the context of shooting aliens or stealing cars. That describes a wide mass of games: Red Dead Redemption, Portal 2, Gears of War, Arkham City. But there’s another theory — a counterargument, really — that videogame storytelling should embrace the medium’s unique offer of exploration, and create a whole new kind of narrative. Players should invent their own characters from the ground up; the “story” should be a series of personal decisions.

Blue Dragon's anime adaptation gets a second season released in the U.S., The Old Republic takes comics, and Mass Effect gets a fancy art book and third issue of its Dark Horse miniseries.
Mass Effect: Invasion #3 and The Art of Mass Effect Hardcover
We've got a one-two shot of releases here: the first is the current issue of the ongoing miniseries set on the Omega space station hitting shelves and digital distribution this past Wednesday, and the other is a big, glossy hardcover coming in February, both from publisher Dark Horse Comics. Invasion is written by Mac Walters and John Jackson Miller with art by Omar Francia. Walters was actually one of the writers on Mass Effect 3, so you can at least be sure the canon will be intact (Dark Horse is actually billing this as "An essential lead-in to Mass Effect 3"). It looks like the slight delay into March of the release of Mass Effect 3 is being put to interesting use: according to an Oxm interview with the game's lead writer, Mac Walters, developer Bioware is restoring missions left on the virtual cutting room floor from the last game that will return Shepherd to the Citadel, one of the key locations from the first game.
From Walters: "There was a Mass Effect 2 plot that was a kind of callback to the first Mass Effect that was going to be on the Citadel, and we cut it. But now it's made a resurrection in Mass Effect 3, so I'm happy, but I can't say what it is. That's the nice thing about trilogies, sometimes you get a second chance."

One of my favorite characters of "Mass Effect 2" was The Illusive Man. For one thing, he taught me that "illusive" is actually a word ("based on or having the nature of an illusion," in case you're wondering). For another, he was voiced by Martin Sheen, who put together a fantastic performance as a snide, secretive, powerful individual who loved to sit in his astronomy bubble and judge you for the choices you made.
What we didn't get out of "Mass Effect 2" was a lot of backstory behind The Illusive Man, who he was, how he became so illusive, whathaveyou. He certainly has a reputation in the galaxy, but what made him take control of a once-terrorist organization like Cerberus? If these are the sorts of questions you were left asking by the end of "ME2," BioWare and Dark Horse will be giving you some of the answers in the form...

A trusted Screen Rant source gave Game Rant the exclusive tip – Matthew Fox is in the latter stages of talks for the role of Commander Shepard in a Mass Effect feature film.
According to the source, the Mass Effect film property is already in pre-production:
“BioWare knew Mass Effect 2 would create a monumental buzz around the franchise and has been covertly shopping a film treatment penned by Mac Walters the lead writer for the games. BioWare hopes to get the Mass Effect feature out in theatres to coincide with the conclusion of the videogame trilogy in the fourth quarter of 2012.”

During a trip to my local comic book store, I was searching for Mass Effect: Redemption #1. The first issue came out prior to the game and I was initially on the fence about buying a video game comic book.
However, just a few hours into Mass Effect 2, my enjoyment of the Mass Effect world had grown into an intense love. So, obviously, I wanted anything that would expand my knowledge of the universe.
I casually searched…and searched…and searched.
Nothing.

Unfortunately, I had underestimated how popular the comic would become.

We’ve been fans of BioWare and EA’s Mass Effect game around here since its debut way back in 2008. Now, as things often do, the game has expanded into other areas like a comic book from Dark Horse Comics. Obviously, the game is pretty popular and has sold well and that success seems to have carried over into the comic world as well because according to Dark Horse’s official press release, the first issue of the comic has completely sold out.
