French director Ladj Ly is at the Toronto International Film Festival this weekend with second feature Les Indésirables.
Like Ly’s breakthrough first feature Les Misérables, it is set and shot against the backdrop of Paris’s deprived eastern suburbs of Clichy-Montfermeil where the director grew up.
Having put the spotlight on police violence in his debut feature, Ly turns his attention to the growing housing crisis in his neighborhood as long-time residents are displaced by gentrification.
Anta Diaw stars as a local housing officer of Malian descent who decides to run for mayor as an alternative to the newly arrived, authoritarian, right-wing incumbent.
Under his watch, the tower block she calls home is ear-marked for demolition, with no guarantee of adequate, local accommodation for its long-time residents.
Les Indésirables takes the spectator into the heart of the tight-knit community, made up mainly of people of African and Middle Eastern descent,...

TIFF continues to build out its speaker lineup despite the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes barring a number of participants from this year’s 48th edition.
Of note, actor Viggo Mortensen will appear on stage in Toronto to discuss his feature directorial debut, the western The Dead Don’t Hurt, a movie he also stars in with Garret Dillahunt, Danny Huston and Vicky Krieps. Despite the SAG-AFTRA strike, Mortensen will appear at TIFF under the guise of director. He’ll be joined by producer Jeremy Thomas and Regina Solórzano. Global rights are available on The Dead Don’t Hurt; HanWay Films is handling.

Last week, TIFF announced that Pedro Almodovar, who is already receiving a tribute at the fest, Hong Kong actor Andy Lau and the stars of Korean disaster epic, Concrete Utopia, are already set to have sitdown conversations.

Dominik Moll’s brooding procedural thriller “The Night of the 12th” won big at the 48th Cesar Awards Friday night in Paris.
Out of 10 nominations, “The Night of the 12th” picked up best film, director, male newcomer for Bastien Bouillon, supporting actor for Bouli Lanners, adapted screenplay and sound. Bouillon and Lanners star as two cops trying to solve the gruesome murder of a young woman. The film opened at Cannes in the Premieres section.
Caroline Benjo, who produced “The Night of the 12th” with Carole Scotta and Simon Arnal at Haut et Court, made a searing speech denouncing the violence against women. “When Dominic and Gilles came to us to make this film it was obvious that we (needed to address this issue) and that the perspective of men on this matter was crucial, and that filmmakers had to tell this story,” said Benjo. “A few days ago, Dominic...

“It’s an absolute honor and a source of pride for me,” says Alice Diop, the director and co-writer of “Saint Omer,” France’s entry for Best International Feature at the 95th Academy Awards. “It says something about the tradition of cinema that made me want to make films in the first place. I’m particularly happy to be chosen with ‘Saint Omer,’ which is a film that, like the kinds of cinema that I defend, places the formal concern at the center of the making process, and that is carried by two fantastic Black actresses that, in their characters and in themselves, carry absolutely universal concerns. I’m very happy that I was chosen to represent French cinema.” Watch our exclusive interview above.

“We are happy and honored that we have been chosen by France,” says producer Christophe Barral, whose movie “Saint Omer,” directed by Alice Diop, has been selected as the country’s official entry for Best International Feature at the 95th Academy Awards. “France can be a bit conservative in the movie that it chooses, so we’re very happy to have the first Black female director to represent France. Alice Diop’s Saint Omer has been selected as France’s entry to the best international film category.
The drama was among five features shortlisted for the honor out of 33 submissions alongside Eric Gavel’s Full Time, Lise Asoka and Roman Gueret’s The Worst Ones, Alice Winocour’s Paris Memories and Mia Hansen-Love’s One Fine Morning.
Saint Omer recently premiered at Venice, winning the Silver Lion Grand Jury prize and Luigi De Laurentis First Film Award.
Loosely inspired by a real-life infanticide trial in 2013, the drama follows a pregnant novelist as she attends the troubling trial of a young Senegalese woman accused of killing her 15-month-old daughter by abandoning her to the rising tide on a beach in northern France.
The drama is lead produced by Toufik Ayadi and Christophe Barral at Paris-based Srab Films, who previously took credits on Ladj Ly’s Oscar-nominated French feature Les Misérables.

Exploring Paris’ working-class suburbs with a fresh set of eyes while reframing the immigrant experience under a more incisive lens, a dynamic generation is blazing new trails in French cinema.
And if artists like “Saint Omer” filmmaker Alice Diop, “Athena” co-writer Ladj Ly, and “The Gravity” writer/director Cedric Ido share little in common but age – interestingly enough, all were born within one or two years of one another – the group’s shared spotlight in Venice and Toronto certainly reflects a rise in opportunity for diverse perspectives.
“Today, we do see renewal,” says Unifrance managing director Daniela Elstner. “There’s an altogether new breath, a young generation looking to change, to dare, and to propose new kinds of films, [and with that] a willingness on the part of festival programmers to welcome these filmmakers into main competitions a little bit faster than before.”

“Les Miserables” was inspired by the 2005 French riots and examines the tensions between neighborhood residents and police that helped inflame the rioting. It centers on three cops who find themselves overrun during the course of an arrest.

Ladj Ly’s work takes home the title of Best French Film for 2019, while Matthieu Bareyre’s documentary Young and Alive is named Best First Film. Last night saw the French Critics Syndicate hand out its awards for 2019. The title of Best French Film went to Ladj Ly’s Les Misérables which is continuing along the winning path it first embarked upon at the Cannes Film Festival in May last year, where it walked away with the Jury Award. Produced by Toufik Ayadi and Christophe Barral on behalf of Srab Films, and co-produced by Rectangle Productions and Lyly Films, the filmmaker’s first fiction feature is one of five works nominated for the 2020 Best International Film Oscar (which will be awarded on 9 February) and has also earned itself no fewer than seven nominations (in the categories of Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best First Film, Best Cinematography and two.
Ladj Ly had already beaten the odds by world premiering in competition at Cannes and winning the jury prize with his feature debut “Les Miserables.” Ly has now scored an Oscar nomination for his politically-charged film in a particularly competitive year for the international feature film race.
One of the five movies selected out of 93 movies submitted, the police brutality drama “Les Miserables” will face two other Cannes competition titles, Bong Joon Ho’s Palme d’Or and Golden Globe winning “Parasite” and Pedro Almodovar’s “Pain and Glory,” as well as Jan Komasa’s “Corpus Christi,” which opened at Venice Days and Tamara Kotevska and Ljubomir Stefano’s “Honeyland” which won three awards at Sundance, including the Grand Jury Prize.

The European Film Academy has unveiled its nominations for the 32nd European Film Awards with the ceremony to be held December 7 in Berlin. Among the titles to figure in the races, three are tied with four mentions each including Roman Polanski’s An Officer And A Spy, Pedro Almodovar’s Pain And Glory and Marco Bellocchio’s The Traitor. The latter two are also the Oscar representatives from their respective Spain and Italy and give Sony Pictures Classics a combined eight nods at the EFAs.
While Polanski remains a controversial figure, there has been a divide between U.S. and Euro perspectives in the #MeToo era. His Dreyfus Affair drama, An Officer And A Spy, which also has Efa nominations for Director, Actor and Screenwriter, was one of the most contested titles at the Venice Film Festival where it debuted earlier this year. It went on to win the Grand Jury Prize there.

Ladj Ly’s politically charged drama “Les Miserables,” which won the Jury Prize at Cannes, has been chosen by France’s Oscar committee to enter the international feature film race.
In one of the most competitive years for French movies, “Les Miserables” beat out Celine Sciamma’s “Portrait of a Lady on Fire,” the 18th-century-set romance which won best screenplay at Cannes. Also falling short was Alice Winocour’s “Proxima,” which opened at Toronto in the competitive Platform section and received an honorable mention. The film stars Eva Green as an astronaut preparing for a mission that will separate her from her young daughter.
“Les Miserables,” which was bought by Amazon for the U.S., earned stellar reviews at Cannes, including in Variety, whose review said the film “simmers with urgent anger over police brutality” and compared Ly’s work to that of Spike Lee.
