Standing behind a large curtain at the Cultural Center Theater in the small Appalachian city of Charleston, West Virginia, Kathy Mattea readies herself to welcome another audience to NPR’s Mountain Stage.
“[Mountain Stage] has reinforced and magnified my long-held belief that music is really important,” Mattea, a Charleston native, tells Rolling Stone backstage. “Music and hospitality — that’s what it’s all about. And those two things? That’s West Virginia right there.”

While Billy Bob Thornton was elated to take home the Golden Globe for best actor in a drama TV series, his ex-fiancée Laura Dern‘s reaction was what caught Twitter’s attention.
As Thornton, 61, was approaching the stage to give his acceptance speech, he awkwardly passed by Dern, 49, who appeared to avoid eye contact from the actor.

The Allman Brothers Band are celebrating their 45th year with another Beacon Theatre run in March, but Gregg Allman is also keeping busy as an executive producer of his biopic Midnight Rider. Production starts in February, with All American Rejects frontman Tyson Ritter cast as Allman and Wyatt Russell playing Duane Allman. "They’re nice guys," says Allman, adding he isn’t leaving anything to chance. "It's time consuming and tedious work to get it all right. I don't know firsthand because it hasn't started yet, but I know I...

The trouble with a band like Widespread Panic is that if you’re at all familiar with jazz, the band’s improvisations are not that impressive. And if the band’s not getting over on the strength of its solos, it has to rely on the more conventional qualities of pop music—singing, songwriting and rhythm—and those aren’t so impressive either. It’s not that Widespread’s musicians are incompetent in any of these areas; it’s that they’re not exceptional at any of them. The sextet played a two-and-a-half-hour set, nearly twice as long as any other set at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival...

A quick review of last night's "Happy Endings" coming up just as soon as my bottom half is selling fuzzy burritos in the parking lot outside of a Widespread Panic concert... Last week's "Happy Endings" was one of the best episodes the show has ever done. Last night's, unfortunately, was one of the weakest they've done in quite some time. They're at a point now where it's practically impossible for them to do an episode where I don't laugh — as I did at Max's weakness for bad boys, Alex turning bully again, and some of what Brad was up to...

Clearly I've chosen what is arguably the most anticipated film of 2012 for this question, but it's nonetheless a serious question as Magnolia prepares to debut Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie on Facebook tomorrow night, February 18, two weeks before it arrives in theaters. The online screening will take place at 6pm Pst, so this won't be a click on over and watch it whenever you want kind of thing. It will be a one-time only event and while fans are watching they will be able to chat directly with stars Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim all for $10 a piece. My question is, why don't major studios do this? After all, it's just another screening and they are getting the money directly. The Facebook live event is part of a partnership Magnolia struck up with a company called Milyoni, which specializes in such events. Through the use of their Social Live...

Forty-two years ago today, the iconic Woodstock Music Festival was wrapping up after three days of peace and music. The fest is easily one the most legendary events to take place in all of music history. It’s clear that the big music festivals of today – Coachella, Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza – attempt to recapture the same spirit, but even at their best, modern festivals pale in comparison to the lighting-in-a-bottle moment that was Woodstock.
Woodstock began when hippie concert promoter Michael Lang was approached by a group of investors looking to put on a three day music festival – inspired by success of the Monterey International Pop Festival of 1967. Lang found dairy farmer Max Yasgur, who was willing to lease 600 acres of his land for the event at the price of $75,000, and set out to plan a big weekend for an expected 50,000 people. Tickets were priced at $18 in advance (around $105 in today’s money,...

Manchester, Tennessee — In the end, it wasn't so much the heat as it was ... Ok, it was pretty much the heat. But the 2011 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival is now in the books, having come to a close Sunday night with an evening full of nods to its noodle-y roots: a fest-capping performance from Widespread Panic, the semi-annual Superjam set, the instrumental grandeur of Explosions in the Sky and, uh, the Strokes, who occasionally play songs longer than four minutes.
As the crowds began to file out of the dusty 700-acre farm that the fest has called home for 10 years now, the question was: Who managed to steal the show? Of the 120-something acts on the Bonnaroo bill this year, which was the best?...

If, for some reason, you weren't aware of it by now (perhaps you don't read Relix magazine on the regular?), the 10th annual Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival kicks off Thursday (June 9) in its spiritual home of Manchester, Tennessee, bringing with it tens of thousands of voracious music fans, a whole lot of creatively griddled arepas and some seriously wasted Wookies, too.
And while some say this year's lineup — topped by the likes of Eminem, Lil Wayne and Arcade Fire — strays too far from Bonnaroo's generally crunchy roots (you know, aside from bands like Widespread Panic, My Morning Jacket and the String Cheese Incident), the true beauty of Bonnaroo has always been in its ability to provide something for everyone, even if that something is...

South by Southwest (SXSW) Music Festival is still on going and will come to an end this Monday, March 21. Over the weekend, Kanye West brought his G.O.O.D Music entourage to Austin, Texas for a showcase. There was also Hanson who teamed up with the event organizers to raise fund for Japan relief effort.
Kanye rocked the Vevo Power Plant on Saturday, March 19 with all-star guests like John Legend, Common and Kid Cudi. Opening the show was Mos Def with songs like "Oh No" and "Casa Bey". After his performance, Pusha T, Big Sean, Cyhi Da Prince and Mr. Hudson resumed the show with their own sets.
Kanye himself didn't show up on stage until after midnight. The "Heartless" rapper delighted concertgoers with his "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" tracks such as "All of the Lights" and "Runaway" as well as songs from his older catalog like "Can't Tell Me Nothing".

Austin, Texas — Like most folks, Taylor Hanson has watched the events unfolding in Japan with a mixture of sadness and shock, not to mention an overwhelming urge to help out in some way.
Of course, unlike most folks, he also fronts a massively popular band: Hanson. And since he and his bandmate brothers were already down in Austin for South By Southwest, he quickly realized how he could help those still reeling in the aftermath of the massive earthquake and tsunami that ravaged the nation: by throwing together an impromptu benefit show, streaming live for 12 straight hours over at SXSW4Japan.org.
So, in less than a day, he and his brothers placed calls to their fellow musicians, found a studio compound outside downtown Austin, and got to work.

Hanson have announced plans for a 12-hour benefit livestream set for Saturday (March 19) at South by Southwest, to aid victims of the massive earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Japan.
The event, which will stream live at SXSW4Japan.org , features performances and appearances from Michael Stipe, John Hermann of Widespread Panic, the North Mississippi Allstars, the Court Yard Hounds, Bowling for Soup — to name just a few — plus Hanson themselves.
The benefit is co-sponsored by SXSW itself, which originally started with a goal of raising $10,000 for survivors of the disasters in Japan, a goal they've subsequently raised to $100,000 thanks to Hanson's involvement. Fans can donate through the SXSW 4 Japan site, or by texting "Redcross" to 90999. All funds go to the Red Cross's disaster-relief efforts in Japan.

The weather is starting to warm up a touch across the country, which means that pretty soon it will be time to spend the summer months seeing bands outside. A little over a decade ago, there weren't any major event festivals in the United States, but now it seems as though there are dozens. But there are three tentpole events against which all other festivals are measured in this country, and they are Coachella, Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo. Coachella announced its full lineup a few weeks ago, and on Tuesday (February 15), Bonnaroo revealed the eclectic batch of acts that will be descending on Manchester, Tennessee in June. Meanwhile, the full lineup for Lollapalooza has yet to be revealed, though we do know that the headliners include Eminem, Foo Fighters and Muse.

Rumors have been circling the web regarding the highly anticipated Bonnaroo music festival for about a month, and now the official line-up has been released.
In January, someone with too much time on their hands threw together a fake line-up for the Manchester, Tn festival including the likes of U2, Lil' Wayne, The Strokes and Drake.
There are more than a few common threads (Lil' Wayne! Girl Talk! Florence + The Machine!) between the fake and real line-ups, but we are bummed that Drake didn't make the cut. Eminem taking top billing was a nice surprise, though.
Check out the full list of performers below, which also includes Arcade Fire, fresh off their Grammy win.

Unlike earlier, decidedly crunchy editions of the fest, the 2011 lineup is topped by two of the hugest hip-hop acts in the business — Eminem and Lil Wayne — along with newly crowned Grammy champs Arcade Fire and the Black Keys. Other acts on the bill include Mumford & Sons, the Strokes, the Decemberists, Florence and the Machine, Big Boi, Wiz Khalifa and Robyn.
Of course, there are still some nods to Bonnaroo's roots: Fest vets Widespread Panic return once again, as do My Morning Jacket and the String Cheese Incident.

It's hot. I think it's hot everywhere for the moment and it's only going to get worse through the rest of the summer and the thought of that is distressing. And at least here in Maryland, and most likely in Miami when I get back there in August, it's super humid too. On one hand, my clothes are never wrinkled; on the other hand it's impossible to go anywhere that's more than a five minute walk without showing up sweaty and miserable. With that lovely mental image in mind, here's tonight's TV:
8:00 p.m.: "The Bachelorette" on ABC.
"Behind the Music: Usher" on VH1. Second season finale. Having heard some of his latest contributions to music, I feel like Usher took some kind of dare about whether or not he could turn various inane phrases into actual hit songs and he's winning in a big way. All the rest of us,...

Like all good things, summer vacations have to end eventually. All the talk show hosts are back to work this week (save for the Comedy Central duo of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, who are pre-empted for the next few days), which means that the guest lists are gigantic. David Letterman kicks off the week strong with a visit from Sylvester Stallone (plugging his upcoming action epic "The Expendables") and a musical performance from Robyn on Monday (July 19). Sheryl Crow stops by for a song on Tuesday (July 20), while Friday (July 23) will see Paul McCartney swing by for a performance.
"The Tonight Show" counters with visits from Kiss (Monday), the Black Eyed Peas (Tuesday), "Eclipse" rockers Metric (Wednesday, July 21), 3Oh!3 (Thursday, July 22) and the Gaslight Anthem (Friday). That is an incredible week of music, augmented by interviews with Miami Heat star Dwayne Wade (Monday) and "Charlie St. Cloud" hunk Zac Efron...

Set up in the shadow of downtown, sandwiched between the Ohio River and the picturesque Louisville Slugger minor league ballpark, the three-day eco-urban Forecastle Festival hosted one of the most high-profile lineups in its low-key nine year existence this weekend.
With a new location in a 70-plus acre riverside park that aimed for a mini-Lollapalooza vibe, the weekend kicked off on Friday night (July 9) with Forecastle faves Widespread Panic, followed by the reconstituted Smashing Pumpkins on Saturday (July 10) and the always-explosive Flaming Lips closing things out on Sunday night (July 11). With temperatures in the brain-melting upper '90s down south, we opted to just check out the final day’s activities and when we arrived it looked like plenty of three-dayers were running on fumes (and from the looks and smell of it, some other gases and solids) after 48 hours of music from a variety of DJs, lesser-known jam bands and national acts like Devo,...

This past weekend, 15,000 enthusiastic music fans descended upon the majestic hills of Marvin’s Mountaintop in Masontown, West Virginia for the 14th annual All Good Music Festival. They were treated to over 40 hours of music ranging from rock to reggae. For many, traveling thousands of miles to take part in this experience is the highlight of their summer and a yearly tradition. It's a perfect combination of great music, beautiful scenery, crisp mountain air and a friendly, laid back vibe.
The crowd got warmed up on the first night with Dark Star Orchestra, a Grateful Dead tribute band who set the scene for the weekend ahead with positive vibes and killer jams. Friday's (July 9) lineup also included festival favorites such as Umphrey's McGee, Tea Leaf Green and Femi Kuti. As the sun set, the crowd expanded and was ready to rock with featured band, Furthur (which includes...

Glee: The Music, Volume 3 Showstoppers
Photo: Columbia Records
It was a squeaker, but the latest "Glee" soundtrack, Glee: The Music, Volume 3 Showstoppers, will beat back an advance from the reunited Stone Temple Pilots to hold onto the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 for a second consecutive week. Though sales were down more than 50 percent, Showstoppers still moved nearly 63,000 copies, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan.
Just barely behind is the self-titled reunion album from 1990s rockers Stone Temple Pilots, which debuts at #2 on sales of nearly 62,000. At press time, less than 1,400 albums separated the top two discs.
Otherwise it is business as usual in the top 10, with unstoppable teen sensation Justin Bieber climbing up one to #3 with My World 2.0 (50,000), followed by Lady Antebellum's Need You Now (#4, 46,000), Usher's Raymond V. Raymond (#5, 35,000) and Lady Gaga's The Fame,...

A wash of noise reminiscent of Loveless-era My Bloody Valentine introduces one of the strongest tracks on Dirty Side Down, the latest effort by the jam-band road warriors in Widespread Panic. The track wasn’t written by John Bell and company; it’s a cover of “This Cruel Thing” by the late Vic Chesnutt, complete with delicately plucked guitar and a thoughtful croon that perfectly evokes the longtime Panic collaborator. The rest of the record trades on greater complexity and more varied instrumentation—like the alternately hard-driving and ethereal opener, “Saint Ex,” or the title track, which layers a ...

May traditionally is a busy month for brick-and-mortar and digital music retailers. Among this month's future album releases are Bo Bice's 3 that's coming out May 18th, and Widespread Panic's Dirty Side Down that drops on May 25th. The following are interviews with Bice and Panic's John Bell during which they talk about their new projects, parenthood, the late Vic Chesnutt, a little social consciousness, and The Little Prince's author, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. A Conversation With Bo Bice Mike Ragogna: What's Bo Bice up to lately? Bo Bice: Well, we're about to have our press tour, and I'm going to be gone for a couple of weeks. I'll be in New York, L.A., doing all the TV runs for a while, doing some press for the new album. Right now, I'm at home and in the studio for the day, got a little...

Vic Chesnutt, one of the greatest songwriters of our time and as charismatic a concert performer as Springsteen despite being confined to a wheelchair, committed suicide through an overdose of muscle relaxants. His tragic life was inextricably intertwined with his art. At age 18, driving drunk, a car crash left him paraplegic; never much of a reader before that, he started reading voraciously. He also began to take music-making much more seriously, and his reading eventually influenced his lyrics. His physical abilities varied from night to night; how well he functioned could determine his set lists, and for a while he played with his guitar pick superglued to his fingers.
Overcoming adversity, from 1990 through this year he had 14 albums released under his own name plus two as brute. in a collaboration with the band Widespread Panic.

There's always something to spot in the movies beyond the basic plot -- one little thing or a horde slipped in covertly to please the die-hard fans and watchful eyes. Sometimes it's so obvious it can't be missed, like Bruce Campbell's cameos in Spider-Man and Raimi's car, and sometimes it's so subtle there is no chance in hell to ever know -- like the period-authentic papers littering the jail in Watchmen. Now there's New Moon. The film has been out for a while (still holding the #5 spot), and now director Chris Weitz has shared with EW some of the little things he slipped into the second installment of The Twilight Saga.
Some are little basic things, like the hints of wolves showing up on everything from shirts to bowls, or the appropriateness of playing Strauss' "Die Fledermaus" in the Volturi's elevator. Others are a little funkier. Weitz threw in...

After being released from his contract with Arista Records, Taylor Hicks refuses to back off from music industry. Believing that "this is turning the page on a new chapter" in his career, he forms a record label Modern Whomp Records. Taking the advantage of "artistic freedom," he is back to studio, making music for his new album "The Distance" and plans to release it across U.S. on March 10.
In the new album, Taylor steps behind songwriting table, co-penning several songs including "Wedding Day Blues", "Seven Mile Breakdown", "Once Upon a Lover of Mine" and "Woman Gotta Have It". Teaming up with producer Simon Climie, who has recorded songs for Eric Clapton, Faith Hill and Carlos Santana, he also works with guitarist Doyle Bramhall II, bassist Nathan East and drummer Abe Laboriel Jr to provide the album's sounds.
