France’s 2-1 victory in the World Cup group stage over Denmark on Saturday evening drew an average 11.6 million viewers to TF1 from the 5Pm hour local time. This is second best audience score of the year for all programs and across all channels in the Hexagon. Upon entering the tournament last week, Les Bleus set a record for viewership in 2022, and since June 2021.
Viewing figures peaked on TF1 at 14.6 million for the France/Denmark face-off on Saturday with a 63 share, which is significantly higher than Tuesday’s 48.1 share when France beat Australia.
For the first time since providing World Cup ratings, French audience measurement firm Médiamétrie is also keeping tabs on out-of-home viewing including in bars, restaurants and hotels. This year, owing to the controversy over host country Qatar, major cities in France are not erecting the usual giant outdoor screens.
In the second half on Saturday, Kylian Mbappé scored both goals for Les Bleus, bringing his total to three in the two matches so far this tournament. Mbappé’s career World Cup record increased to seven goals in just nine appearances.
The striker has also tied Brazilian legend Pelé as the only other player under 24 to mark seven World Cup goals. What’s more, Mbappé now has a total 31 international goals for France, level with Zinedine Zidane. German player Miroslav Klose remains the top scorer in the history of the World Cup with 16 goals across four tournaments.
Now qualified to move on to the round of 16, Didier Deschamps’ reigning world champions will next face Tunisia on Wednesday.
Today’s play includes Japan v Costa Rica, Belgium v Morocco, Croatia v Canada and Spain v Germany.

Doha (Qatar), Nov 24 (Ians) Spain’s 7-0 win over Costa Rica is one of the biggest wins in the recent World Cup finals and given the way that teams from what were traditionally not considered footballing nations have improved drastically in recent years, wins such as Spain’s are getting rarer and rarer.
The increasing number of players from Asia and Africa now playing in European leagues and the money invested in their domestic competitions means sides are now much better prepared, both physically and tactically.
However, that wasn’t always the case, as a look back at some of the biggest historical results in the World Cup finals shows.
The heaviest-ever defeat in the World Cup finals came in Spain in 1982 when Hungary defeated El Salvador 10-1 in their opening group game, with four of the goals coming in 11 chaotic second-half minutes as El Salvador fell apart.

Berlin, May 18 (Ians) Anger is brewing among fans of German football club Bayern Munich following the departure of head coach Hansi Flick and icons such as David Alaba, Jerome Boateng and Javi Martinez.
The anger is being directed at the designated chairman of the club, Oliver Kahn, and sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic, who have been accused of jeopardising the club's motto "Mia san Mia" (We are what we are), reports Xinhua.
Bayern has more than 358,000 enrolled members and 4,500 fan clubs.
Fans say that Salihamidzic had turned the motto into "Me-myself-and I".
The fans have also started targeting new Bayern coach, 33-year-old Julian Nagelsmann, who, they say, is the reason behind the latest departure of assistant coaches Miroslav Klose and Hermann Gerland.
"How can it be that there is no space for the fans' biggest heroes?" a fan asked on social media.

Berlin, May 16 (Ians) A touching gesture followed the 40th goal of this season of Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski in their 2-2 Bundesliga draw against Sc Freiburg.
After having equalled the 49-year-old Bundesliga record of legendary German striker Gerd Muller, the 32-year-old Pole lifted his playing shirt showing an undershirt with a print of Muller's face and the written message: "4ever Gerd", reports Xinhua.
Bayern's entire squad lined up along the side-line to cheer Lewandowski after his opening goal in the 26th minute. With a bright smile on his face, the Bayern striker went through the guard of honour, receiving his teammates' congratulations.
"I achieved a goal that once seemed impossible to imagine. I'm so unbelievably proud to make history for Fc Bayern and to play a part in creating the stories that fans will tell their children -- following in the footsteps of legends like Gerd Muller," Lewandowski wrote on social media.

Berlin, March 29 (Ians) Satisfying results against two underdogs don't conceal Germany's most pressing problem. At this summer's European Championship, coach Joachim Loew's team will have to do the job without an out-and-out spearhead.
The 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Iceland (3-0) and Romania (1-0) showed distinct profligacy in converting chances, something that is causing concern.
Leroy Sane (City), Serge Gnabry (Bayern), and Timo Werner, and Kai Havertz (Chelsea) might be skillful wingers, but the four are far from being goal-scoring machines.
An inadequacy in converting chances at their clubs and in the national team is becoming one of the primary concerns for Loew when facing leading football nations such as France and Portugal and then Hungary in the group stage at the continental tournament, Xinhua news reported.
"If we had a Lewandowski around, we would win every game," former Bayern president and TV pundit Uli Hoeness said, adding: "But we don't.

The footballing world was stunned last night when a ruthless Germany humiliated Brazil 7-1 in Belo Horizonte. Five goals in the space of half an hour dashed the World Cup host’s hopes of winning the tournament in their own backyard before even the half-time whistle had sounded as A Seleção crashed out in ignominious fashion.
It was a night of milestones: the scoreline represented Brail’s joint-heaviest defeat, alongside their 6-0 loss to Uruguay in 1920, and was the biggest ever World Cup semi-final loss suffered by any team and more notably, Brazil’s reverse was their first on home soil since losing to Peru 1-0 at the 1975 Copa America.
It wasn’t even a contest: Thomas Muller, Miroslav Klose, Toni Kroos and Sami Khedira put Germany out of sight within 30 minutes as the disbelieving Brazilian fans could only watch on in anguish – some crying in the terraces.

Scottish actor Gerard Butler touched down in Brazil Monday to watch the host nation face off against the fierce German national team in the semifinals of the 2014 World Cup Tuesday afternoon.
Gerard Butler Attends World Cup
Butler landed in Rio de Janiero Monday and headed to a party where he hung out with former Friday Night Lights actor Taylor Kitsch. The two were enjoying the pre-semifinal revelry in matching navy blue shirts on the roof of Hotel Budweiser in Copacabana Beach.
On Tuesday, Butler headed to the Belo Horizonte to watch the Brazil vs. Germany match where he was spotted wearing the yellow jersey of the home team. Unfortunately for Butler, he didn’t get to see a Brazil victory, as the squad fell in a shocking 1-7 defeat. The loss left Brazil fans in tears and players struggling to explain how they let the game get so far away from them.

It's safe to say that Germany was on a roll when the team kicked off its World Cup game against Brazil by scoring a whopping five goals in the first 30 minutes. Brazil fans watched in disbelief as the Germans made goal after goal, with a sixth goal in the 69th minute and a seventh goal around 79 minutes into the game. Thomas Müller scored first, becoming the 13th player ever to score 10 World Cup goals. Then Miroslav Klose scored, setting the all-time World Cup goal record, before his teammate Toni Kroos made two goals just two minutes apart. At nearly 90 minutes, Brazil scored, making the final score seven to one. The 2014 World Cup is well under way and while England may have been knocked out after two disappointing defeats, some of the world’s most exciting footballers are still strutting their stuff in the high temperatures of Brazil.
This year’s competition has seen goals galore as we near the end of the group stages, with twice as many at this point than there was in South Africa in 2010.
France and the Netherlands have already shown the free scoring nature against Switzerland and Spain, both scoring five goals and setting the standard for the rest of the tournament.
Some notable names have not made the list despite holding goal scoring pedigree.
The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Diego Costa and Mario Ballotelli have not been included either because they failed to make it through to the knockout round or they are standout names in otherwise average looking teams.

World Cup Schedule Day 5:
Germany v Portugal - 5pm on ITV
Iran v Nigeria - 8pm on BBC
Ghana v USA - 11pm on BBC
Match of the Day: Germany v Portugal
Germany head into the tournament with one of the strongest qualifying records, with a team ravaged by injuries. Portugal squeezed into the World Cup thanks to some magic from Cristiano Ronaldo, but the 'world's best player' might be carrying a niggling injury himself. If this match wasn't already the most tantalising in Group G, it now seems to carry even more weight to it.
There are plenty of big questions to be answered in the early kick-off of the day. How can Portugal fare with an under-par Ronaldo? Can this German team finally live up to their promise? And exactly how old is Miroslav Klose? He feels like he's been at every World Cup and European...

It was a reasonably busy day for Arsenal as they bought in Kim Kallstrom, and also had approaches rejected for Papiss Cisse, Solomon Kalou and Miroslav Klose.
Emmanuel Frimpong left to join Championship strugglers Barnsley and he will be joined in the division by Park Chu-Young, who joins Watford on-loan subject to Premier League clearance.
The news was confirmed by the Championship club on their Twitter feed moments after the window slammed shut, bringing the striker in until the end of the season.
The striker hasn’t featured at all this season and has failed to make an impact at the Emirates but in his defence he got very little playing time.

Arsene Wenger’s frenzied attempts to bring in a new striker continue, as Sky Sports have confirmed that Arsenal have followed up their failed attempts to sign both Lille’s Salomon Kalou and Lazio’s Miroslav Klose on loan with another temporary offer for a forward.
The latest target is Newcastle United’s misfiring Senegalese striker Papiss Cisse, who had been subject to a bid from an unnamed Middle Eastern club and a £6.6m bid from Turkish side Trabzonspor, and who Wenger has made an offer to loan for the remainder of the season.
Cisse has been in poor form for the Magpies so far this season, and Alan Pardew’s side’s only incoming business of the window saw Dutch striker Luuk De Jong brought in on loan from Borussia Monchengladbach. Despite that, and the assumed implication that Cisse will now find himself further down the pecking order at Newcastle,...

Despite the assumption that Arsene Wenger’s earlier assertion that he was intent on signing at least one player meant precisely that he was only going after one player, in Kim Kallstrom, it looks like the manager was working on far more potential deals than initially suspected.
Quickly after the news broke that Wenger had seen a loan bid for Salomon Kalou rejected by Lille, who prefered a permanent deal for the former Chelsea man, Sky Sports News have also confirmed that Lazio have rebuffed an attempt to sign German striker Miroslav Klose on loan until the end of the season.
Klose might seem like an odd choice, given his age, but his direct play and his form in front of goal would make him a strong candidate to play in front of the likes of Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla.

Arsenal are set to complete the surprise signing of Spartak Moscow midfielder Kim Kallstom on-loan until the end of the season, according to BBC Sport.
Wenger is looking for a short-term option in midfield after confirming Aaron Ramsey will be out for another six weeks with a thigh injury, whilst Flamini and Jack Wilshere are two currently unavailable.
“We are trying to bring one body in because of Ramsey’s setback,” Wenger told the press earlier today.
Arsenal are currently in negotiations with the Moscow club and are confident that they can complete the signing of the Swede – known for his powerful shooting and range of passing – before the 11pm GMT deadline.

Arsenal are in pursuit to sign veteran striker Miroslav Klose, reports Metro. The potential transfer would only see the Klose loaned out to the London club until the end of the season.
The 33 year old German forward is currently playing for Lazio and it seems that Arsene Wenger is keen on bringing him in to provide back-up to Olivier Giroud. Nicklas Bendtner has suffered from a number of injury problems over the season and has only played in a handful of games, meanwhile Lukas Podolski is untrusted as the lead striker, with Wenger preferring him to cut inside from the wing.
Now that it seems that the Julian Draxler deal has faded, Arsenal may be looking for a short term solution until the summer when they can try to get the promising youngster once again.
Klose would certainly provide an experienced head in the last few months of the season.

After a thrilling start to Serie A last weekend, the action continued in similar fashion as goals were scored all across the league. 11 goals were scored in the 2 matches on Saturday and there were no goalless draws in the entire weekend.
Napoli picked up their second consecutive victory with a 4-2 win at Chievo. Hamsik gave the visitors the lead but Paloschi equalised 10 minutes later. Callejon put Napoli ahead again but Paloschi scored his second of the game to send the sides into the interval on level terms. Germany cruised to victory over a valiant if limited Greece team. Philipp Lahm, Germany’s captain, led the way with a swerving strike five minutes before half time. Georgios Samaras equalised for Greece early in the second half, but goals from Sami Khedira, Miroslav Klose and Marco Reus put the three time European Champions into the ascendency. A late Dimitris Salpigidis penalty could not hide how badly the Greeks were outplayed.
The strength of the German squad was illustrated as Jogi Loew made three surprising changes, switching his front three of Podolski, Muller and Gomez for Dortmund’s Marco Reus, Bayer Leverkusen’s Andre Schurrle, and Lazio’s Miroslav Klose. Jerome Boateng returned from suspension, in place of Lars Bender, as Germany dominated from the first minute to the last.

International football can throw up all kinds of non-sporting narratives, from Jesse Owens winning gold at Hitler’s Olympics, Argentina winning the World Cup with the background of the Junta and it’s oppression of the people, USA vs Iran in France ’98, and of course the various rivalries formed off the back of armed conflict – the historical context surrounding England vs Germany or Argentina will be known by most, but this European Championship also brought Poland and Russia together in a tense battle. Germany vs Greece and the economic differences between the two countries is a more present source of friction that normally expected, and it adds an interesting subtext to the match.
Germany won all three group games and apart from a sluggish performance against Portugal in the opening match they have yet to break a sweat. From back to front they look strong, inhabiting typical German efficiency and technical excellence.

Arsenal fans got another glimpse at new signing Lukas Podolski on Sunday night, and were no doubt delighted to see him score a goal on his 100th appearance for Germany. The sense of excitement around his completed summer transfer to the Emirates is building rather belatedly, due in no small part to the fact that Arsenal fans were more worried about Champions League qualification at the time the transfer was announced. The hype and excitement is justified however; and Arsenal fans are beginning to see just how shrewd the deal to bring Podolski to the Emirates Stadium is.
