For her feature narrative film debut ‘Bull,’ director Annie Silverstein chose to explore a world few people know about; that of the black rodeo circuit in Texas. The film stars Rob Morgan, a recent standout in “Just Mercy,” as Abe, an ex-bull rider who still works the circuit despite the toll it’s taken on his body. Newcomer Amber Havard plays his 14-year-old neighbor Kris, who forges an unlikely friendship with Abe. With Kris’ mother in prison, she is searching for family and connection, which she finds on the rodeo circuit. The film premiered at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, where it earned raves, before going on to win the grand jury prize at the 2019 Deauville Film Festival. It is now available through video on demand.

Exclusive: Richard Linklater’s adaptation of Maria Semples’ Where’d You Go Bernadette has finally found his Bee, the daughter to the character Bernadette, portrayed by Cate Blanchett. Emma Nelson was plucked out of 500 other young women who auditioned for the role and makes her feature film debut for the role of a teenaged daughter who is determined to find her Mom, an architect-turned-recluse who goes missing just prior to a family vacation.
The cast also includes Billy Crudup, Kristen Wiig, Laurence Fishburne, Judy Greer and Troian Bellisario. Annapurna Pictures plans a March 22, 2019 release.
The filmmakers were looking for the film’s Bee for awhile. They began their search in Austin, TX (Linklater’s home
state) with casting director Vicky Boone. They found the eight-grader in Chicago. We were told that Nelson landed the coveted role after auditioning a couple of times and then being asked to read with Blanchett and Crudup.

Local filmmaker Kyle Henry, whose feature Room played Cannes in 2005, is preparing to shoot a short film called Tampa, the third in a series of four planned shorts called Fourplay. Actor/writer Carlos Trevino has written the script, and the director of photography will be Pj Raval (Trouble the Water, Trinidad).
Now all Tampa needs is a cast, and Vicky Boone is working on that -- an Austin casting director who made a very funny short film herself in 2005, Attack of the Bride Monster (which Raval also Dp'd). A message posted to the Austin Film Casting mailing list details the roles the production needs to fill. I've reposted all the info after the jump. The deadline for sending your picture and resume to Boone is today (Jan. 18), so if you think you're perfect for one of these characters, get cracking.
