The National Association of Broadcasters‘ longtime trade event Nab Show has welcomed content creators for years now.
But its 2024 event is carving out real space for them with its new Creator Lab, a “dedicated experience to foster collaboration, learning and networking through panels, workshops, fireside chats and more,” Nab Show says.
Creator Lab, sponsored by Blackmagic Design, will feature nearly 30 sessions about things like content monetization, the video production pipeline, and how our industry is being affected by AI.
Those sessions will be led by creators and other industry experts including Marc Hustvedt, President at MrBeast, whose panel–moderated by VidCon CEO Jim Louderback–will cover “the current state of the creator economy, the content strategy behind creating viral sensations, landing lucrative sponsorships, innovative windowing strategies, expanding to traditional TV and diving deep into audience development,” per its official description.

Above Average has made a significant addition to its executive team. The digital comedy network launched in 2012 by Saturday Night Live producer Broadway Video has brought on Marc Hustvedt, an experienced online video exec and one of the co-founders of this publication, as its CEO.
Hustvedt announced his move to Above Average on his Linkedin page. “We all know the lines between digital and traditional media have blurred, especially for consumers,” he wrote. “I love that this company is uniquely positioned to thrive in this new world — partnering with top comedic talent both in front of and behind the camera while approaching it from digitally native understanding of the audience. We do this on the studio side when we partner with the top digital (and yes, even TV) platforms to produce high quality comedy that connects.”
At Above Average, Hustvedt will work alongside the rest of the executive team, including President Jennifer Danielson, who has served as Above Average’s President since the network’s inception. Hustvedt’s duties will span multiple verticals. Above Average continues to churn out comedy programming on platforms like YouTube, where one of its newest projects is the interview series Your Biggest Fan. Its sports destination, The Kicker, has grown steadily since its 2015 launch.

The ambitious entertainment company that snapped up FilmBuff last year has bought the content creator launched in 2014 by Max Benator and Marc Hustvedt.
The deal — financial terms were not disclosed — follows a strategic investment by Gunpowder & Sky in Supergravity in July 2015 in which the former took an equity stake and struck a feature co-production partnership.

Benator and Hustvedt will segue from executive roles into a producing capacity across a number of existing projects.
“Since making the investment, Supergravity has made great progress; building the team, developing, selling and producing more series and films, and launching Antigravity, their marketing arm,” said Gunpowder & Sky president and former Endemol executive Floris Bauer (pictured), who co-founded the company with former MTV executive and Viacom...

A company best known for distributing feature films led by digital media stars has acquired the rights to a documentary with a relevant message for the Lgbt community. Supergravity Pictures has picked up Gayby Baby, which follows four children growing up in same-sex households in Australia.
Gayby Baby hails from Australia, where it was first released last year. Its director, Maya Newell, conceived of her film as a way to add a much-needed perspective to the gay marriage debate (which remains a hot-button issue Down Under). Newell chose four kids she profiled from a pool of more than 30 and followed their lives as they grow up with either two mothers or two fathers.
By distributing the film internationally, Supergravity hopes to expose it to a wider audience. Gayby Baby will be screening in theaters in 50 cities beginning on April 1st before it is released via video on-demand platforms on May 1st.

In The Chosen, Lawley plays Cameron, a young man who must decide to end the lives of six family members to save his niece, who’s been possessed by a child-snatching demon. The Chosen co-stars Mykayla Sohn and Elizabeth Keener, is produced by Terror Films and Supergravity Pictures, the film studio created by Max Benator and Marc Hustvedt for features starring YouTubers.
Lawley, who boasts over 2.7 million subscribers on his channel (and now has 1.3 million on his joint channel with Jc Caylen) originally released an exclusive teaser trailer for The Chosen at an event during Playlist Live back in February 2015. And this isn’t the first time Lawley has been involved with a feature film.

Ray William Johnson has ceased hosting duties on his =3 web series, but the 33-year-old web personality still has a vested interest in the online video industry. In order to share his views about traditional and online media practices, Johnson's Mom & Pop Empire has partnered with Supergravity Pictures for a documentary that will shed light on the monopolistic actions of the cable industry.
The currently untitled documentary, which will be co-produced by Johnson, Kaja Martin, and Supergravity founders Max Benator and Marc Hustvedt, "will bitingly and hilariously shed light on the closeddoor machinations that granted cable companies their horrendous monopolies and the reality that history is repeating itself as the internet falls prey to the same monopolistic, big media practices," according to a press release. This topic is a familiar one for Johnson, who endured a contentious falling out with his one-time partner network, Maker Studios. “Cable monopolies have had...

Kian Lawley is about to be YouTube’s latest movie star. The 19-year-old former member of the late YouTube supergroup Our2ndLife and current half of the new YouTube channel with fellow O2L-mate Jc Caylen dubbed KianAndJC just dropped the trailer for his feature length thriller The Chosen at Playlist Live in front of an audience of screaming virtual and live fans numbering in the thousands.
Elliott Morgan played host for the evening’s brief event, introducing Lawley and co-star Mykayla Sohn before the pair introduced the worldwide premiere of The Chosen trailer and previewed an exclusive scene for the live Playslist attendees. The threesome then talked on stage for a few about the flick, which has an enticing tagline evocative of an old school William Peter Blatty classic spliced together with the relatively recent horror film phenomenon popularized by Hideo Nakata.

Camp Takota proved prominent YouTube stars can make very successful motion pictures. The direct-to-download feature film about twentysomething besties at summer camp starring online video sensations Hannah Hart, Mamrie Hart, and Grace Helbig was made available for purchase via Vhx and iTunes starting on February 14, 2014. Less than one week later, it was holding steady in the #3 spot on iTunes Top Independent Movies chart (alongside Oscar nominees like Dallas Buyer's Club and 12 Years a Slave) thanks to the nearly insatiable appetite for content of the online video and social media followings of the flick's three female leads. Here, take a look: camp-takota-itunes-charts Camp Takota producer Michael Goldfine of Rockstream Studios (and now Fullscreen) and co-Executive Producers Brian Norgard and Marc Hustvedt of Chill (the pay-to-view online video destination through which the movie was originally set to be released before it closed up shop) placed a relatively risky bet that the aggregate...

A new series from an old favorite is attempting to redefine crowdfunding. Vigilante Diaries, an action thriller from Jason Mewes of Jay & Silent Bob fame, has launched its first two episodes behind a paywall on Chill; however, if the series wishes to continue, it will need to reach $50,000 in sales in just two days. Chill's new model is Kickstarter with a twist. The first two episode of Vigilante Diaries cost $4.99, but bundles (akin to Kickstarter rewards) throw in the typical extras, such as CDs and t-shirts, to encourage further sales. "There's a broader trend at play here—that online audiences are actually supporting artists and projects that interest them no matter what stage they are at," said Chill creator Marc Hustvedt. "For those in the ideation phase there are crowdfunding platforms to test ideas. For those with something created and ready to release, there are platforms like Chill where you can test again,...

Kicking off this Friday in the heart of Austin, the South by Southwest Interactive Festival will bring some of the greatest minds in digital video together for a series of panels, interactive presentations, and keynote speeches (and parties) that will shed light on the industry's past, present, and future (and the alcohol tolerance of those individuals within it). As someone lucky enough to attend for the past five years, it's been amazing to see how the interactive portion of SXSW has grown and become a destination for those involved in digital entertainment. Here's an interesting festival anecdote that sort of illustrates that growth: Felicia Day was a volunteer for SXSW over ten years ago. In 2007, The Guild won the SXSW/On Networks Greenlight Award for best web series. Last year, Day became a keynote speaker. So, now that SXSW has become a go-to spot for the online video-inclined, there are...

Despite the 9:30 am call time and an hour lost the night before due to daylight savings, SXSW attendees turned out in droves for Tubefilter's panel Decision Trees: YouTube's New Breed of Interactive Storytellers. Tubefilter Co-Founder Marc Hustvedt led a stimulating discussion with Rafi Fine of Fine Brothers Productions and Tony Valenzuela of BlackBoxTV and DeFranco, Inc.—two of the best and most creative of YouTube's new breed of interactive storytellers. YouTube's annotations tool opened up a whole new way telling stories, with the rise of interactive videos that let viewers "choose-their-own-adventure" as they navigate through the story. The panel jumped right into a demo of TheFineBros' interactive 2010 Year In Review Shooting Range, during which Hustvedt prompted audiences to call out their choices. We navigated through the Antoine Dodson storyline, answering questions (incorrectly at first) in an 8-bit video game featuring a lo-fi version of Auto-Tune the News' Bed Intruder song.

At CES 2011 on Las Vegas Thursday, four of the top most successful YouTube content creators gathered with Tubefilter’s Marc Hustvedt to share their secrets on how they became superstars and transitioned their hobby into a sustainable business. The lineup: iJustine, Philip DeFranco, MysteryGuitarMan, Freddie Wong and Brandon Laatsch. iJustine quit her job 4 years ago before YouTube was ever paying the bills because from her breakout video hit, iphone bill, she saw the possibility of what was to come from building an audience and bringing her life to video. For her the biggest part about creating and growing a successful YouTube channel is knowing your audience, serving their needs and expanding that demographic. She also credits her success with being a lover of social networking. The announcement of a new web series often generates a great deal of excitement. From the die-hard fan looking for a new obsession to the casual viewer hoping for a few minutes of entertainment, the launch of a new web series brings hope and promise to its viewers. However, what happens to that prerelease excitement when there is a failure to launch? Today we want to look at some of the ramifications of missing one's launch window, as well as update the progress of a few of the web series that you have not missed. Very few web series receive any prerelease attention; those that do cannot afford to waste it. Last week, we discussed the various steps that a series can take to create the all important buzz. However, perhaps the most important step that a creator can take is to actual release the series in time to capitalize on the hype.
