As I hunker down into my bunker and ride out the coronavirus scare, I find some comfort in re-visiting a film I saw a few years ago called “Azimuth,” Mike Burstyn’s 2017 opus to conflict during the final days of the Six Day War.
“Azimuth” opens with a shell-shocked Egyptian soldier (played by Sammy Sheik) stumbling among the bombed-out wreckage of what’s left of his unit. The lone survivor of an Israeli air attack, he picks through the remains of his comrades and searches for anything that can enable his survival in the harsh Sinai desert. He is alone in a vast, dry unknown and not aware of the breaking news of a ratified cease-fire.
At the same time, a broken-down Israeli military convoy sends one soul out into the desert to find aid. With the only instruction of “follow the tire marks,” the young soldier (played by Yiftach Klein...

"No one outside that gate wants you here... So do your job." Netflix has debuted an official trailer for an Iraq war drama titled Sand Castle, from the Brazilian director who last made the cult hit A Wolf at the Door previously. Set in Iraq in 2003 at the very beginning of the Iraq war, the film follows a couple of Us soldiers trying to protect a small village that's under attack. The film stars Nicholas Hoult, Henry Cavill, Glen Powell, Logan Marshall-Green, Beau Knapp, Neil Brown Jr., Parker Sawyers, Sam Spruell, Sammy Sheik, and Tommy Flanagan. I'm surprised to see yet another new Gulf War movie, especially with this kind of impressive ensemble cast, considering they seem to be a dime a dozen nowadays. But hopefully there's something unique to this and it's better than it looks at first glance. On Netflix in April. Here's the first official trailer for Fernando Coimbra's Sand Castle,...

Netflix isn't done showing us what other projects they have coming out soon. Like I said, Netflix is ushering in a whole new era of entertainment. Just look at all of the trailers they've released in the past few days and the level of talent they are working with. It's awesome!
They've just released a trailer for a war drama they produced called Sand Castle, which stars Henry Cavill (Man of Steel) and Nicholas Hoult (X-Men). The film is based on a true story, and it looks like great film filled with intensity.
Set in Iraq in 2003, Sand Castle follows a group of American soldiers in the early days of the second Gulf War. Bearing witness to the heat and the horror is the inexperienced Private Matt Ocre (Nicholas Hoult), who, together with several fellow soldiers, is ordered to the outskirts of Baqubah to repair a water pumping station damaged by U.

Clint Eastwood's new film, American Sniper, may have smashed box office records. Yet it's riddled with problems...
American Sniper doesn't need defending. The film racked up six Academy Award nominations, and Thursday's announcement spurred on the wide release of the film in the United States this weekend to a record-breaking $90m opening. Unfortunately, it may also be the worst film that director Clint Eastwood has ever made.
That's not to say that we place the blame at Eastwood's feet, although his no-frills approach to directing is one of the many things that works against the film. The memoir American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History has been kicking around for a long time at Bradley Cooper's production company. At various times in its development, it's been intended for Chris Pratt to star as Navy Seal sniper Chris Kyle, with David O. Russell...

Clint Eastwood’s Navy Seal biopic, which earned six Oscars nominations including Best Picture and Best Actor, was mostly on target with critics
“American Sniper” earned six Academy Awards nominations on Thursday morning, including for Best Picture and a Best Actor nod for Bradley Cooper, who beefed himself up to play real life Navy Seal Chris Kyle — the U.S. military’s all-time leader in confirmed kills — and turned in a commanding performance by most accounts.
The nominations committee submitted in their votes well before “American Sniper’s” wide release on Friday, but would the critics offer up as much praise?...

Many broken men populate Clint Eastwood’s knotty cinematic sandbox. An inciting action forces them to brazenly jump from normal life in search of revenge or salvation, burying themselves in self-righteousness and self-pity along the way. Still, despite this stubborn resolve their endgame often hinges on a homecoming of sorts, whether it’s written in blood or tears. By the end of 2014, Eastwood will have released two new films in very different genres that complicate this motif. Both Jersey Boys and American Sniper examine elite professionals whose work takes them on the road, away from the domestic confines of family and femininity to an isolated place where chaotic situations are common. But instead of doing everything in their power to return home, these men manipulate the classic “hero’s journey” as a selfish way to avoid the complex perspectives of those they’ve left behind or forgotten. Being on tour...

Only a select few members of society will ever understand what it feels like to take a human life in the heat of battle, whether it be avenging a fallen comrade or protecting your military family, but American Sniper does its best to convey the emotional toll that each death takes on the triggerman. We’ve seen cinematic war stories that focus solely on running and gunning – an almost brutish glorification of violence in the name of patriotism – but that’s not the story of Chris Kyle. American Sniper is about a war-addict’s struggle to assimilate back into reality after letting the souls of many repeatedly drag him into the heat of battle for another masochistic tour, leaving behind a tortured wife, fatherless children, and a life more ordinary just to ensure his squad would be safe under his famous overwatch.

U.S. Navy Seal Chris Kyle is the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history with 160 confirmed kills out of 255 probable kills. American Sniper, directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Bradley Cooper, sets out to tell his story from his early days as a Texas youth, through his four tours in Iraq and his subsequent attempt to return to family life with his wife and two children. Eastwood clumsily directs Jason Hall's (Paranoia) clumsier script, based on Kyle's own memoir, bringing a little bit of energy to the story with Kyle's time in Iraq, mixed with embarrassing, soap opera level melodrama whenever he returns home. However, even the Iraq moments feel false as anyone making a film involving Navy SEALs better pay close attention to Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty as she set a high bar for anyone hoping to capture the intensity of tactical warfare with a sense of authenticity.

Each time we think Peter Berg has finished rounding up the thespian troops he needs to fill out the cast of true-life Navy Seal tale Lone Survivor, another recruit pops up on the roster. Today’s soldier is Alexander Ludwig, who will portray Shane Patton.Adapted by Berg from Marcus Luttrell’s book, Survivor follows Luttrell (Mark Wahlberg) and his fellow SEALs on patrol in Afghanistan in 2005. When the platoon is ambushed, they must begin a harrowing fight against the Taliban, a battle that leaves only one of them alive. The cast already also includes Taylor Kitsch, Ben Foster, Emile Hirsch and Sammy Sheik. Berg will be kicking off the shoot on September 25 in New Mexico.Ludwig is most familiar for The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising and Race To Witch Mountain, and had spent a quiet couple of years largely acting in TV shows until he popped back up...

Brake Trailer. Gabe Torres‘ Brake (2012) movie trailer stars Stephen Dorff, Chyler Leigh, Jr Bourne, Tom Berenger, and Kali Rocha. Brake‘s plot synopsis: “A Secret Service Agent is held captive in the trunk of a car and endures high-speed mental and physical torture as terrorists attempt to extract needed information for their sinister plot.”
I thought this was a re-dux of Buried but it actually looks much better. The viewer will be surprised at the amount and varying tricks up the kidnapper’s sleeve.
Brake also stars King Orba, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Sammy Sheik, Kent Shocknek, Jaylen Moore, Stephen J. Bridgewater, and Matthew Pollino.
Watch the Brake movie trailer and leave your thoughts on it in the comments section below. For more Brake photos, videos, and information, check out our Brake Page. Brake opens in Us theaters through IFC in Theaters on March 23, 2012.

This week! A look at how gay Frasier was and how brilliant Modern Family is, a chat with United States of Tara's gay couple Michael Hitchcock and Sammy Sheik, and an exploration of bad performances in hit movies. Plus, truly unlikely gays!
Have a question about gay male entertainment? Contact me here (and be sure and include your city and state and/or country!)
Q: When it comes to positive portrayals of gay characters on TV, I've seen coming out stories, displays of affection, and lots of sweaty workout scenes, but I don't think I've ever seen the love and loyalty that is portrayed between Cam and Mitchell on Modern Family. Do you agree that the "gas station scene" – where Cam, as Fizbo the Clown, mightily defends Mitchell against a jerk – qualifies as one of the most natural, and therefore important, portrayals of gay (or straight) love we've seen on TV?...

The goddess that is Vanessa Williams is doing Sondheim on Sondheim while Ugly Betty winds down. Or it could be Wilhediva Hater impersonating Williams.
Avatar hits BluRay and DVD April 22, but it’s going to be in 2D. Which is fine, because my living room ceilings aren’t high enough for a Na’vi anyhow.
Henry Rollins not only judges RuPaul’s Drag Race, he also writes wonderfully gay supportive editorials in Vanity Fair. And really revs my motor.
SyFy has greenlit a pilot called Three Inches. Once you get your mind out of the gutter, I’ll tell you it’s a lame superhero show. Not lame in “it sucks” but about a superhero with lame powers, like telekinesis that only allows him to move objects three inches.
Here’s a list of the 12 Best South Park Political Parodies, several of which I’d forgotten about. These guys have...

Keir Gilchrist and Toni Collette
Even though the second season of United States of Tara doesn't arrive for weeks and weeks, there is already a lot of interest thanks in large part to gay teen Marshall Gregson (Keir Gilchrist). And having seen the first two episodes of Season 2, I can say that interest is most definitely warranted.
And gay viewers especially have a lot to look forward to as USoT is adding three new gay characters. And we've got some casting news!
First up are the Gregson's new neighbors, gay couple Ted and Hany. Michael Hitchcock plays Ted and Sammy Sheik is Hany.

Also new this season is Lionel, a classmate of Marshall's. But Lionel (Michael Willett) isn't just any kid — he's the flag bearer for the out and proud at Marshall's high school. I won't give anything away, but let's just things are set...

Normally, I would warn readers when the back of a DVD gives away a crucial Spoiler about the film. In this case, the summary reveals not just a minor secret, but, in fact, the movie’s “astonishing twist.” Not only that, but it discloses the “astonishing twist” in the first sentence. The reason I’ve quoted and repeated “astonishing twist” (their words, not mine) is that said “twist” is laughingly foreseeable and, if there’s anything “astonishing” about The Morgue, it’s that Lionsgate bothered to distribute this direct-to-dvd release. That’s why I would suggest, if you have any interest in the film (and choose to ignore my forthcoming attempts to dissuade you from seeing The Morgue), you should actually read the revealing description on the DVD case, skip the movie and be thankful you have 84 more minutes of free time in your day.
