Kids (and children at heart), prepare to be mystified: Netflix has summoned “Daniel Spellbound,” a new CG-animated series about a young seller of rare magical goods to sorcerers and sorceresses in modern-day New York City. The show will be produced in collaboration with creator and director Matt Fernandes, co-founder of Toronto-based studio Industrial Brothers.
The upcoming Netflix series, made in partnership with Industrial Brothers and Boat Rocker Media, joins the streamer’s expanding slate of kids and family animated programs on the platform, including “Kid Cosmic” from PowerPuff Girls creator Craig McCracken, which debuted on Feb. 2. Other titles arriving in 2021 are “City of Ghosts” from “Adventure Time” and “Phineas & Ferb” alum Elizabeth Ito, and “Maya and the Three” from Mexican animator and writer Jorge Gutierrez, most known for his work on the Emmy-award winning “El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera” Nicktoon and on the Golden Globe-nominated film “The Book of Life.

While Hollywood’s summer kicks off this Friday with a certain superhero showdown, the first studio feature we’re genuinely excited for this season will arrive in two weeks. Shane Black‘s The Nice Guy marks his return to the world of crime comedy, his last foray coming over a decade ago with the excellent Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, the 1970s-set tale follows tough guy Jackson Healy and private detective Holland March, who are working on a missing-person case.
Ahead of its release on May 20th, and even before its Cannes premiere on May 15th, Warner Bros. held the first screening last night at Austin’s Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. Complete with a post-screening Q&A featuring Gosling, Crowe, Black, and producer Joel Silver, we now have the first reactions. These are overwhelmingly positive, so it looks like Black has once again hit it out of the park.

A review of tonight's "Justified" coming up just as soon as I have a signed ball from Billie Jean King... "Well, hell, Raylan, then I have already won." -Boyd After the insanity and body count of last week's outing, "Collateral" eases back on the mayhem a bit. Assuming Constable Bob survives his wounds (and that guy's almost as impossible to kill as Wynn Duffy), the episode's casualties are Zachariah, Loretta's idiot boyfriend-turned-bodyguard Derrick, and Merrill Hagan, the anonymous Harlan man unlucky enough to cross Boyd's path at the worst possible time. Zachariah has been around for a bit, but we have no real investment in the other two (though casting "Boardwalk Empire" and "Agent Carter" alum Shea Whigham as Merrill certainly helps make him more interesting than your average victim). And while the episode doesn't lack for action or intrigue, it leaves an awful lot of plot to be untangled in next week's series finale,...
