One could have watched the Critics Choice Awards last Sunday and thought they were re-watching the Golden Globes. Same nominees, mostly the same winners, same sweatshirt for Jason Sudeikis. Wait … didn’t the professional entertainment judgers generally blast the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for, well, for being what and who they are?
What happened to early critics’ winners like “First Cow”? How quickly they forget and go with the flow. In fact, this is the time critics — respect or resent them — are currently getting a taste of their own.
Consider “Malcolm and Marie,” the controversial film from Sam Levinson starring John Thomas Washington and Zendaya. It is basically one long argument about whether “that white lady of the L.A. Times” wrote a positive or negative review of Washington’s character’s film, seen through the racial lens. Washington ends his screed by saying he hopes the writer gets “f...

For nearly a century, Warner Bros. has been in the big-screen business. From the gangster pictures that defined its Depression-era offerings to the “Batman” movies that ushered in its blockbuster phase, the studio has focused on creating stories so action-packed, so need-to-see, that they are tailor-made to lure people from their homes and separate cinema-goers from their hard-earned cash. In the process, the studio helped establish Hollywood as the movie capital of the world.
But a pandemic has a way of drastically changing things. Last week, Warner Bros. announced that due to the Covid-induced shutdown of most cinemas in key cities across America, it would release its 2021 slate simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max. That includes sprawling, special-effects-heavy tentpole pictures such as “The Suicide Squad,” “Matrix 4” and “Dune,” as well as awards season hopefuls like “Judas and the Black Messiah” — all representing some $2 billion in production costs. It...

Warner Bros. Entertainment is suddenly in the market for a new CEO. The hunt is taking place at a moment when that job description is in a state of massive flux due to the corporate upheaval implemented in the past few weeks by new parent company At&T.
The stunning downfall of Kevin Tsujihara as the studio’s chairman-ceo came amid an investigation into misconduct involving an extramarital affair with British actress Charlotte Kirk. Allegations that Tsujihara used his clout to help secure roles for Kirk left his function as studio chief untenable in the #MeToo era, despite Kirk’s assertions that the affair was consensual.
Tsujihara’s permanent successor (or successors) will come into the role at a fraught time of expansion and reorganization for the studio and its former sibling divisions — HBO and Turner — under the WarnerMedia umbrella. Warner Bros.’ new leadership will need to be able to deftly...

The Venice Film Festival begins August 29 and possibly the most anticipated American entry is the world premiere of “A Star Is Born” starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, who also directed the film. This is at least the fourth telling of this tale. The stars change, the style of music changes, but the story apparently has something that is evergreen — the title, coincidentally, of Barbra Streisand’s Oscar-winning song in the 1976 version.
The latest big-screen reboot of “Charlie’s Angels” was announced earlier this summer, and as we speak, Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner are prepping a reimagining of “West Side Story.” It might make sense to attempt a new take on a great idea that didn’t work the first time. (The Rat Pack’s “Oceans 11” became the much better George Clooney version.) But for an iconic musical that won 10 Oscars?
The list of failed remakes is long. Another winner of ten-plus Oscars,...

Independent film is actually “alive and well,” digital experts said at TheWrap’s Industry Panel at Sundance Film Festival on Saturday. When speaking to TheWrap’s Editor-in-Chief and CEO Sharon Waxman, Joe Pichirallo, a veteran studio executive, producer and film educator, said that digital platforms have made things “more accessible and democratic” for independent filmmakers. “Back then, you really had to come to Sundance to be discovered, but that’s not the case anymore,” he said. “You can get discovered without an agent by creating content that is distinct and original and by being smart to build an audience that is receptive to your content. The independent film community that largely supported Hillary Clinton in the presidential election collectively mourned the upset victory of Donald Trump on Wednesday, with one distributor saying he was too depressed to even comment on the result, but members of this artistic family avoided expressing a defeatist sentiment, instead voicing their continued belief in the bright future of indie filmmaking.

“It’s obviously dark times, but that’s where and when artists have a responsibility to keep us entertained and to tell really good stories that inspire us and keep the hope alive,” Joana Vicente, executive director of the Independent Filmmaker Project told IndieWire, adding that the cost of making independent films has never been more affordable than it is today. “I feel like independent film and independent storytellers are strong and will continue to be strong.
