Here’s something you don’t see too often: a Japanese adaptation of an American horror franchise. Usually it’s the other way around, and most of these wonky creations aren’t worth the time it takes to roll your eyes at them. Writer/director Toshikazu Nagae’s 2010 chiller “Paranormal Activity 2: Tokyo Night” is essentially the same as its American counterparts — unsuspecting individuals endure increasingly violent attacks from a mysterious supernatural entity that has taken up residence in their home — and offers little in terms of originality and imagination. However, given that the “Paranormal Activity” series wasn’t designed as a cerebral experience, I suppose you could say that “Tokyo Night” is a resounding success. If this is what you’re looking for, then chances are you’re going to walk away with a smile on your face and a shiver down your spine. Specifically, the film follows...

We've been on the fence about Paranormal Activity: Tokyo Night, and the new batch of stills that has been released for the film doesn't tell us a whole lot, which makes us all the more anxious to hear some reviews from our UK friends when the sequel lands onto DVD on March 7th courtesy of Icon Home Entertainment. We're counting on you Brits!
After the original Paranormal Activity shocked, scared and downright terrified people the world over, grossing over $100 million in the Us and £10 million in the UK along the way, Japanese horror aficionado Toshikazu Nagae, with additional input from the original Us producers, set out to make an even more shocking sequel.
As is the tradition of Us filmmakers re-working Japanese horror classics to bring them to a wider audience, Toshikazu Nagae has done just the opposite by taking the bones of Oren Peli’s Us horror spectacle...

We just don't know about this one. Can two bedrooms equal twice the fear as promised by the box art? Our friends in the UK will be finding out soon enough as Paranormal Activity: Tokyo Night, a direct sequel to Oren Peli's record setting terror tale, lands onto DVD on March 7th courtesy of Icon Home Entertainment.
From the Press Release

There's no stopping the ghostly goings-on that were unleashed by Paranormal Activity.
The first film, released here in November 2009, was made for just $15,000 and went on to rake in more than $193million (including £10million in the UK); quite a profit margin, by any standards.
Last year's sequel cost more ($3million) and made slightly less ($169million) though it was still successful enough to trigger a third chapter, due this October.
But did you know about the officially-approved Japanese follow-up?
After the original Paranormal Activity proved such a scary success, Japanese horror aficionado Toshikazu Nagae set out to make an even more shocking sequel, with additional input from the original Us producers.
The result is Paranormal Activity: Tokyo Night (certificate 15), which comes to UK DVD on March 7, via Icon Home Entertainment.

Icon Home Entertainment has announced the upcoming DVD release of Paranormal Activity: Tokyo Night, the officially sanctioned Japanese sequel to 2009’s docu-horror Paranormal Activity.

Typically, its been U.S. filmmakers who adapt Japanese horror films for American audiences, like what was done with The Ring and The Grudge, but for Paranormal Activity: Tokyo Night, Japanese director Toshikazu Nagae has done the reverse, with input from the original U.S. producers.

While Paranormal Activity 2 was making box office gold here in the States, Japan quietly released Paranormal Activity 2: Tokyo Night, their own direct sequel to Oren Peli's smash hit indie from 2009. Directed by Toshikazu Nagae, we learned that Amazon UK has listed the haunted house flick for pre-order on February 28 from Icon. The project is a direct continuation of the events of Oren Peli and Jason Blums original and takes place in Japan as a girl who visited San Diego as an exchange student unwittingly brings the evil that haunted Katie Featherston into her familys house. The film chronicles the young womans videotape recordings in their house and the shocking realization of the supernatural force that her family must defeat.

By now you’ve already heard: aside from the American sequel to “Paranormal Activity”, there’s also a Japanese sequel, called “Paranormal Activity: Tokyo Night”. Here’s the trailer, which goes the trendy “See how scared these people are? You’ll be scared, too!” route by way of trailer introduction. And go figure, apparently you can take your blanket to Japanese theaters. Genius! (Plus, Japanese theaters are apparently al fill to the brim with cute Japanese girls. Ticket, please!) “Tokyo Night” is a sorta sequel to the Oren Peli original, and follows a Japanese couple (Aoi Nakamura and Noriko Aoyama) haunted by an evil force after it follows one of them back from a trip to the States. See, this is why I stay away from the haunted locales. Tourist, man, they never learn. Toshikazu Nagae directs.

If you love horror sequels, then how about two sequels nearly released at the same time? Both “Paranormal Activity 2” and “Paranormal Activity: Tokyo Night” were licensed and developed jointly by Japan’s Presidio and Us-based Im Global. The two storylines will not be a linear story, but more like parallel sequels to the first movie and definitely not a remake of each other. “Paranormal Activity 2” will be released in the Us on October 22 while “Paranormal Activity: Tokyo Night” will be released in Japan in November 20 in their respective languages. In the Japanese version, it involves a Japanese student who brings a ghost home from his trip in San Diego. This film is written and directed by Toshikazu Nagae. It would be similar to other Paranormal Activity movies of using a documentary style film setting.Check out the official trailer for “Paranormal Activity: Tokyo Night” and we’ll see...

While 'Door in the Floor' director Tod "Kip" Williams works on the sequel to Oren Peli's indie haunt hit 'Paranormal Activity,' Toshikazu Nagae is simultaneously directing Japan's version of the film -- 'Paranormal Activity 2: Tokyo Night.' Us distributor Im Global and Japan's Presidio have teamed up for a "100% authorized and sanctioned sequel to Peli's film," which is a totally independent story based on the supernatural franchise.
What that means is that 'Tokyo Night' will not follow the same story as Williams' film -- it's moving in an entirely different direction as a "parallel" movie and is not considered a true blue remake. This time we're headed to Tokyo (obvs) where a Japanese student has just returned from a trip to San Diego and the only souvenir he's brought home with him is a ghost. It looks...

I know what you're thinking: we just saw the trailer for Paramount's Paranormal Activity 2, and it had nothing to do with Tokyo. But there's an interesting strategy going on overseas with the Paranormal Activity series: Paramount has authorized the Japanese production of a 'parallel sequel' called Paranormal Activity 2: Tokyo Night. Check out the first-look trailer after the break. Twitch brought this to my attention, and notes that this isn't a remake of the first film, or a Japanese version of the sequel that will be released here later this month. It is " a totally independent story rooted in the Paranormal Activity world." Which is a pretty unique approach, if nothing else. I'm hard pressed to come up with a similar strategy taken with any other series. There's even a Us connection, as this film, written and directed by Toshikazu Nagae, follows "a Japanese student who brings the...

As previously reported, Japanese audiences will be treated to their own Paranormal Activity sequel in December, parallel to and separate from the Paranormal Activity 2 we'll be enjoying in the west. Paranormal Activity: Tokyo Night now has a trailer, and here it is. It's not quite as cryptic as the American equivalent, which people (not least us) have pored over since it went online a few months ago. No mirror babies, floor-writing or dogs barking at nothing, but there is quite a nifty split-screen moment where two characters sleeping in different rooms jump awake at the same time. Plus the spectacle of lots of Japanese girls wearing those blankets that have arms.Tokyo Night follows a foreign exchange student as she travels home from San Diego to Japan, taking Oren Peli's stalker poltergeist with her. Toshikazu Nagae (Ghost System) directed from his own script. There are no details yet of an international release,...

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the other Paranormal Activity 2. Yes, you read that right. Though Tod Williams' effort has been getting all the press it is not the only sequel to Oren Peli's micro-budget macro-hit.
Developed simultaneously to the Us Paranormal Activity 2 is the Japanese effort Paranormal Activity 2: Tokyo Night. Developed jointly by Japan's Presidio and Us based Im Global this is a 100% authorized and sanctioned sequel to Peli's film and is something of a first in that it represents a sort of parallel sequel with the Paranormal story now developing different branches as opposed to running in a linear story as is the norm. Again, this is neither a remake nor a Japanese version of the American sequel but a totally independent story rooted in the Paranormal Activity world. And if this sort of thing has ever been done before I can't think of an example.

Tod Williams' Paranormal Activity 2 is not the only official sequel to Oren Peli's hit low budget horror. No, Japanese distributor Presidio are producing their own officially sanctioned follow up as well.
Written and directed by Toshikazu Nagae, Paranormal Activity - Tokyo Night will revolve around a Japanese student who brings the ghost home to Tokyo with him from San Diego. Though just announced now, expectations are that the film will be one hundred percent complete in December so this is very definitely a rush job.

In fact, most are just some annoying stupid little kid who scream like cat getting raped in an alley. Our ghosts are very dumb and really all they can do is pop up in annoying places to try and scare us. So we ignore them and now they all hang out in subways wondering what to do next. Ever since watching 'Seidowaizu' - which is pretty much the same movie as Alexander Payne's 'Sideways,' except everyone is Japanese - I've maintained a strict policy of avoiding all new American films in favor of their eventual Japanese remakes (I can't wait for Japanaese 'Machete'). That's why I've always planned to avoid this fall's 'Paranormal Activity 2' (not really), and now it appears as if my forward thinking is already beginning to pay off, as Screendaily is reporting that the first film to be produced by Japanese distributor Presidio Corporation will be a 'Paranormal Activity' sequel called 'Paranormal Activity: Tokyo Night.'
In all seriousness, it's somewhat nice to see the re-make dynamic reversed given that Hollywood has borrowed so many major Japanese horror properties ('Ringu,' 'Ju-On,' etc...) in the last ten years - I almost feel...

Fans of Paranormal Activity will eventually have a choice of two sequels rather than just one. A parallel second instalment is in preparation for Japanese audiences, under the title Paranormal Activity: Tokyo Night. It's not a Japanese-language remake. The entirely new story picks up after the Oren Peli original, and follows a foreign exchange student (via her home-videos, natch) who becomes the new object of the stalker-poltergeist's affection when she visits San Diego, and unwittingly brings it back to her Tokyo family home. Sounds like it bears a Grudge, ho ho.“Paranormal Activity was a huge success with Japanese audiences", said producer Yasutaka Hanada, "and we feel confident that our own Japanese continuation of the franchise can find an enthusiastic genre audience both here and overseas.”Toshikazu Nagae (Ghost System) is directing from his own screenplay, with Noriko Aoyama as his scream queen. The fast-moving production should get its home-territory release in December.

Not to be mistaken with the upcoming “Paranormal Activity 2″ that’s due out on Halloween of this year, this is apparently a completely different movie, a spin-off sequel if you will, that will take the franchise to Japan. (You know, sorta like a reverse “Grudge”, where the franchise came to the U.S.?) Styd says the spin-off sequel will center around a foreign exchange student visiting San Diego, who unwittingly brings the demonic presence that haunted the first film back to Japan with him. The story will be told via the student’s video recordings. I got $50 bucks that says a chick with long hair shows up at one point. Toshikazu Nagae (an old hand with ghost movies, including 2002′s “Ghost System”) will direct, and Aoi Nakamura (“Beck”) and Noriko Aoyama (“Legendary Assassin”, below) will star.

Japanese audiences are in for a wild Tokyo Night . Presidio is at work on a sequel to Paranormal Activity called Paranormal Activity: Tokyo Night . The film picks up after Oren Peli's film and tells of a foreign exchange student visiting San Diego who brings the demonic presence that haunted the first film to Japan. The story is told via the student's video recordings. Toshikazu Nagae is directing the project from his own screenplay and Aoi Nakamura and Noriko Aoyama star. Interesting, as Tokyo Night is strangely mirroring the same turn The Grudge series took. By the third Grudge film, a supernatural force follows an American to Chicago from Japan. We're volleying evil spirits!
