MasterChef has returned for its 19th season on BBC One – with a small but significant tweak to the rules.
The competitive cooking series, starring John Torode and Gregg Wallace, sees a group of aspiring chefs battle it out for the culinary crown.
Near the beginning of Monday night’s (10 April) episode, the two judges informed the chefs that they would wait outside the kitchen while their dishes were being prepared.
Wallace and Torode would then sample each competitor’s dish from a separate dining room.
“You’ll have one hour and 20 minutes to cook your dish,” Torode explained to the candidates. “Our MasterChef floor manager will be keeping you to time.”
In previous seasons, the judges were allowed access to the kitchen in order to inform contestants of their remaining time, announcing at the end that their time is up.

The BBC is handing one of its juggernaut shows a multi-season renewal and moving production outside of London for the first time since 2001.
Cooking competition series “MasterChef,” produced by Banijay U.K.-owned Shine TV, has been renewed for six more seasons, and is moving from London to Birmingham from 2024. The relocation is part of the BBC’s six-year “Across the U.K.” strategy, which was first announced in March 2021 and committed $978 million to expanding key services outside of London and further afield in the U.K. The popular culinary show was filmed in Kent from 1990 to 2001, but has been shot in East London’s 3 Mills Studios since 2014.
Alongside “MasterChef,” the BBC has also renewed “MasterChef: The Professionals” and “Celebrity MasterChef” through 2028, Variety has confirmed. These shows will also move to Birmingham from 2024, where they’ll be filmed in the new Digbeth Loc. Studios complex, which was set up by “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight.

It's hard to believe, but Celebrity MasterChef kicked off its tenth series tonight - yep, we're onto a tenth run of brave celebrities attempting to prove their culinary prowess (and sometimes failing terribly).
It all kicked off tonight with Sarah Harding, Chesney Hawkes, Yvette Fielding, Sheree Murphy and Patricia Potter heading into the kitchen under the watchful gaze of John Torode and Gregg Wallace. But what did you think of all the action?
Are you still enjoying Celebrity MasterChef as much as ever? Is it still cooking on gas, or has it gone off the boil? (Do you see what we did there?) And what did you think of tonight's episode in particular? Will you be tuning in for seconds next week? (We did it again.)
We want to know all of your thoughts, so hit the comments to let us know what you made of Celebrity MasterChef tonight...

Day 2 of I'm a Celebrity and Matthew Wright is already munching on a camel toe. Don't worry, you haven't stumbled upon an X-rated version of the Ant & Dec reality show. This is just the customary animal-eating Bushtucker Trial.
And what a smorgasbord of tasty treats the hosting Geordie duo lined up for this year's unlucky celebrity duo, Wright and Joey Essex. Joining the camel toe on the menu were ostrich willy, pig brain, a scorpion, a turkey testicle and a pint of cock (roach) cola. Eat your heart out, Nigella.
It was a bit less 'lick your lips with anticipation', and more 'wipe your mouth and clean off the mixture of vomit and the inside of a turkey's ball'.
MasterChef and The Great British Bake Off this was not. Although, Joey and Matthew did try their best to pitch for careers as restaurant critics.
"It tastes like a school rubber with wee over it,...

Alfred goes to London, Lady Mary has a visitor from her past, and Edith is more mysterious than a bucket in this week’s Downton Abbey…
This review contains spoilers.
“Julian! Come in, have a seat. First of all, Mr Fellowes, let me just say that everyone here at ITV is such a fan of the series four scripts. All this stuff on rural economics and tenant farming? Just golden. And the taxation bill storyline? Wowee. There is one thing though. We’d like to do something to really shake things up. Put Downton back on the front pages, so to speak. It’s a bit delicate, so I’ll just come out and say it: we want to do a…
…Masterchef crossover.”
And lo, off went country mouse Alfred to The Ritz this week, where a tiny French John Torode quizzed him on potato and leek trivia.

Ade Edmondson has been crowned winner of this year's Celebrity MasterChef.
The comic actor triumphed in last night's (September 6) final, beating comedian Les Dennis and journalist Janet Street-Porter to the title.
Host John Torode described Edmondson's three-course meal as "delicious and absolutely mind-blowing", while Gregg Wallace said that his cooking had "beautiful simplicity".
Wallace added: "What Ade has learnt along the way has just already enhanced the good cook that he was when he walked in here."
Edmondson said that being crowned victor rather than coming second "feels very weird".
The 56-year-old continued: "I didn't realise it was going to be as tough as it has been. I have spent every waking and every sleeping moment thinking about food."
He added: "I'm going off to have some beans on toast."
Edmondson's winning menu included a pan-seared loin of venison starter, with a main of sea bass stuffed with scallop mousse...

Celebrity MasterChef concludes this week and only three stars remain in with a chance of taking home the series crown.
Janet Street-Porter, Les Dennis and Ade Edmondson are the trio who have rustled up tarts, pastas, meat and two veg and a healthy dollop of puddings for judges Gregg Wallace and John Torode.
But who do you want to win? Who has climbed to the top of the pile and proved themselves to be a surprising culinary genius?
In the final two shows, the trio face a host of daunting new challenges, including tackling John Torode's rabbit three ways dish, cooking for Michelin star chefs and dishing up their own best three-course meal.
All three celebrities will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of recent champions Emma Kennedy, rugby star Phil Vickery and actress Lisa Faulkner.
MasterChef airs tonight (September 5) at 9pm on BBC One and concludes tomorrow...

Gregg Wallace may look like he needs an extra helping of custard with his puddings these days, but other than the greengrocer-turned-tv-shouter's new slimline physique, very little has changed in the world of Celebrity MasterChef.
Gregg and John still drop innuendoes like Carry On films never went out of fashion ("I love the flavour of your dumplings Heidi!" *raised eyebrow, Harry Hill sideways look to camera*) and there is serious tension over whether a chicken is moist enough or if a spider crab has been chopped up correctly. Business as usual then.
Whether it's Celebrity, Professional or the vintage standard, non-famous, non-pro MasterChef, it barely makes a difference. Not only do they blur into one in the schedules, not only do the celebs barely register on the average Joe's showbiz radar, they're also so ridiculously similar in format and style that you'd be forgiven for not knowing which version of...

London, May 3: After going through eight weeks of tough challenges, finally Natalie Coleman won the Masterchef Champion 2013 title. She says it's a dream come true.
Coleman, 29, said: "It's a dream come true. This is probably the best thing thatÂ’s ever happened to me in my life. It's like a fairytale really, the girl from Hackney done good."
The show has been judged by John Torode and Gregg Wallace.
"I think Natalie is destined for great things. She not only understands finery of great food, but she cooks for the people, food that people want to eat. She makes people smile. And sheÂ’s not fazed by a thing," mirror.co.uk.
