Amber Heard’s lawyers on Friday asked for a mistrial in the Johnny Depp defamation case after learning that the wrong juror showed up to court.
Heard’s attorneys say they recently discovered that one of the seven jurors had not received a jury summons. Instead, the summons went to a person in the same household with the same last name, who is 25 years older. The names were redacted from the filing, and it is not clear what their relationship is.
“As the Court no doubt agrees, it is deeply troubling for an individual not summoned for jury duty nonetheless to appear for jury duty and serve on a jury, especially in a case such as this,” wrote Heard’s attorneys, led by Elaine Bredehoft. “This was a high-profile case, where the fact and date of the jury trial were highly publicized prior to and after the issuance of the juror summonses.

The drama is set in the isolation of Texas’ Big Bend, where a lone trailer on an abandoned commune has become the reluctant hideout for Geena (Moriarty), at the behest of her criminal husband, Clyde (Courtney). Geena’s lust for life and desire for interaction with the outside world are quashed by Clyde’s insistence they remain hidden from the law and his former cohorts looking to settle old scores. From his office window, attorney Jon Katz has a direct view of the Fairfax County Courthouse in Virginia, and for the past several weeks, he has watched fans gathering outside to catch a glimpse of Johnny Depp.
The trial pitting the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star against his ex-wife, Amber Heard, is the biggest case Katz can recall in 20 years of practicing criminal defense in the area. He also does free-speech work — clients have included strip clubs, adult toy shops and the Westboro Baptist Church — so he has a professional stake in the outcome.
“I want a verdict against both of them,” he says.
Depp and Heard are suing each other for defamation. Depp alleges that Heard destroyed his career when she accused him of domestic violence. She is countersuing over his claim that her allegations are a hoax.
The trial has become a digital media spectacle. At one point during Heard’s May 4 testimony,...

It’s been 20 months since Deadline broke the story of the Scarface duo of director Brian De Palma and Al Pacino’s re-teaming for Happy Valley. The film chronicles the fall of Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno, whose legend was undone by revelations he and others in the football program were aware that former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky was molesting children, and did little to stop it.
We can exclusively report that the project, based on the bestselling book Paterno by Joe Posnanski, had been quietly picked up by HBO, where Pacino has done two movies, portraying controversial figures: You Don’t Know Jack, about Jack Kevorkian, and Phil Spector. Happy Valley has been undergoing casting, with John Carroll Lynch recently tapped to play Sandusky. Other cast deals had been in different stages too, but we’ve heard that casting sessions on the project had been cancelled and...

Exclusive: Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, the team behind the 2010 Sundance Film Festival documentary Catfish and Paranormal Activity 3, will write and direct an adaptation of the Edward Abbey novel The Monkey Wrench Gang. The project has been set up by Edward R. Pressman, who is producing with Grammy-winning album cover artist Gary Burden. The producers have been tooling around with The Monkey Wrench Gang for about 15 years but feel they’ve now got the right filmmakers to see through a movie adaptation of the ’70s tale. Written in 1975, the novel follows a gang of four guys who try to battle over-development in the American West in the 70s. They do this with bumbling attempts at sabotage, attacking deserted bulldozers, construction equipment and trains, with a vow they will not harm a human, animal, plant or rock. Well, three of the quartet take that to heart; the fourth, a young Vietnam vet named Hayduke,...

Since the announcement last year that James O’Barr’s cult classic The Crow would be rebooted by Relativity Media and The Weinstein Company, the production has been fraught with production troubles and fan-backlash. Last October, Stephen Norrington (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen), the director and creative force behind the reboot, left the project completely. So that script and “unnamed actor” that Norrington wanted to star in it was scrapped. Relativity then announced in April that Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) would be helming The Crow but trouble quickly followed with a lawsuit by The Weinstein Company suing Relativity Media over the distribution rights to the movie. Norrington’s version of the reboot would not touch the James O’Barr source material, but now, with Fresnadillo aboard, the reboot will “reinvent” the story of Eric Draven and Shelly Webster.

Back in October of last year, we brought you the news that director Stephen Norrington (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) had exited the director’s chair of Relativity Media‘s upcoming reboot of The Crow. At the time, I had truly hoped it was the beginning of the end for the proposed reboot… sadly, I was wrong.
Relativity Media has announced that Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) has signed on to direct the reboot. Check out the press release below, along with my thoughts in The Shakedown.

Previous rumors (from February 2011) have been confirmed: 28 Weeks Later helmer Juan Carlos Fresnadillo is now set to direct The Crow reboot. Fresnadillo was once announced [1] as the director of the Gore Verbinski-produced big screen adaptation of the popular video game series Bioshock, and just got finished directing [2] Clive Owen in the horror/thriller Intruders. Previously: The new version of The Crow has been in the works for some time now, once with Stephen Norrington in the director's chair and Nick Cave rewriting [3] the director's script. Mark Wahlberg was attached for a moment [4], but all of these people walked away [5] before the end of 2010, reportedly because a new actor came on board and wanted a new writer to make big changes to the script. Since then we've heard vague rumors about different possible directors, the last of which [6] was Before The Fall helmer F. Javier Gutiérrez. A big screen adaptation...

At the beginning of every month, Ioncinema.com's "Tracking Shot" features about a half dozen projects that are moments away from lensing and that we feel are worth signaling out. This August, we've got a good grouping of titles that are positioning themselves for a Cannes release next May. On the indie front, any hopes of seeing Lee Daniels' Selma go into production appear to be dashed, financing woes might pull the plug on the production despite this being a perfect opportunity, especially in today's climate, to re-introduce a film which has racism in the forefront. We are awaiting confirmation on a filmmaker from our American New Wave 25 profiles to confirm a start date this month, but three established veteran indie filmmakers will be commencing production shortly: Rodrigo García is looking to direct Glenn Close's Albert Nobbs project, Mark Pellington's low budget I Melt With You will...
