Belle and Sebastian appeared on NPR’s “Tiny Desk” concert series, performing four tracks: “Unnecessary Drama,” “Working Boy in New York City,” “Reclaim the Night,” and “Judy and the Dream of Horses.”
The band taped the performance live at NPR Music in Washington D.C. last month at the close of their U.S. tour, focusing on three songs from their recent LP, A Bit of Previous. Set closer “Judy and the Dream of Horses,” meanwhile, comes off the group’s 1996 album If You’re Feeling Sinister.

Stella Donnelly spools out the kind of cuddle-core guitar pop that traditionally goes best with cardigan sweaters and shy glances in the dustiest recesses of the local used bookstore. But the Australian singer-guitarist is hardly the retiring type. “Your personality traits don’t count/If you put your dick in someone’s face/And no, it’s never too late/We sat there silently while you kept your job/And your place and your six-figure wage,” she sings on her #Metoo masterpiece “Old Man.”

The third coming of Star Wars has already been hailed as a future classic that will save modern Hollywood, heal the sick and bring peace to the Middle East – and nobody’s even seen it yet. Commercial success is already assured, and the chances of another Phantom Menace-style backlash are relatively slim, given the decision to plump for old-school special effects, the endorsement of the original cast, and the promised absence of Gungan comic relief. As for the story, fans have eagerly been gleaning snippets and clues from trailers and careless utterances, but why bother? You don’t need to know anything. Put your faith in the franchise, let go, and use the Force.

He cites former BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel as his inspiration.

For every year that is packed with awards season fodder and memorable movies that will go down in history, there is an equal number of films we wish we could erase from our memories.

Burning Down the House –Talking Heads, Nymphomaniac
It makes sense that an auteur as provocative and anarchic as Lars von Trier would use something as lyrically anarchic as the Talking Heads’ “Burning Down the House”, a track whose title is taken relatively literally as we watch Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg) burn the car of her sex addiction therapist. Von Trier, to his credit, is a bit more clever than to use the track merely as an on the nose piece of revenge on Joe’s part; her burning the car comes immediately after her self-proclamation of being a Nymphomaniac, a title she finds empowering. She’s not only burning down that car, she’s burning down the entire paradigm of how we think about female sexuality.

★★★☆☆ The filmmaking debut of Stuart Murdoch, frontman of indie pop band Belle and Sebastian, God Help the Girl (2014) is a wistful modern-day musical structured around tracks from the band’s album of the same name. Starring rising Australian actress Emily Browning, Murdoch’s film is an interesting passion project infused by the musician’s own brand of upbeat and lyrical amiability. Browning plays Eve, an aspiring singer-songwriter trapped in a psychiatric hospital where she's being treated for anorexia nervosa. After escaping the hospital, Eve absconds to Glasgow in the hope of making her dreams of becoming a musician real.

Coming of age often means grappling with the first feelings of real love, finding your own skin, and discovering who you are. Part of that process is found in music, and that permeates much of "The Way He Looks," Brazil's Oscar entry for Foreign Language Film. And today we have an exclusive clip from this multiple award-winning film, which collected the Fipresci Prize and Teddy Award at this year's Berlin International Film Festival. Written and directed by Daniel Ribeiro, and starring Ghilherme Lobo, Fabio Audi, and Tess Amorim, the story follows the blind Leo, who decides to study abroad to escape his overbearing mother and bullies at school. The news is not welcomed by his best friend Giovana, and things get more complicated as those feelings turn to jealousy when Leo grows close to Gabriel after working with him on a school project. In this tender scene, "There's Too Much...

There’s a reason you go to film festivals, and it doesn’t always have to do with the lineup of movies. You could probably convince yourself that you’ll eventually watch The Imitation Game on Netflix, but the real reason to actually make a point and see it at a place like Ciff is that there’s nothing quite like a festival audience. Watching any movie with a large group of people who are dedicated to film and to being attentive and active during a screening can inherently enhance the experience of watching it. When you’re watching a crowd pleaser, that experience can increase tenfold, in that you’re actually watching that film with a crowd that’s waiting to be pleased.

Stuart Murdoch, lead singer and songwriter of Belle and Sebastian, has directed a movie. It is called God Help the Girl, it stars Emily Browning, and it opens this weekend. It’s obliquely autobiographical in a sense, its protagonist a spiritual stand-in for the musician. It is also not animated. In fact, there isn’t all that much animation tied to the work of Belle and Sebastian in general. The Scottish indie pop group has mostly stuck with narrative-minded live-action videos over the course of their career. There isn’t even a French cartoon based on the children’s book from which the band took their name, “Belle et Sébastien,” though there is a Japanese anime series from the early 1980s. All 52 episodes are on YouTube. However, that sort of tenuous excuse to watch a cartoon won’t be necessary this week. Belle and Sebastian have actually made two animated music videos, both...

This weekend marks the limited and VOD release of God Help the Girl, a musical from Stuart Murdoch, best known as the lead singer of Belle and Sebastian. God Help the Girl, which emerged out of a musical side project for Murdoch, follows three friends who start a band during a summer in Glasgow. It has, yes, been described as “twee,” a word now practically synonymous with Belle and Sebastian.
Belle and Sebastian’s music—cheery melodies paired with vivid, often melancholy lyrics—often feels cinematic, thanks to the band’s knack for weaving intricate mini-stories. In that way, it...

Chances are, if you don’t find yourself with an overwhelming need to strangle every single person onscreen, you might actually like God Help the Girl. Written and directed by Belle and Sebastian front man Stuart Murdoch, this emo musical might be the most Belle and Sebastian–y movie imaginable. It tackles subjects such as depression, mental illness, and anorexia — as well as romantic jealousy, coming of age, and the joys of creating beautiful art — and fuses them with adorably ramshackle song-and-dance numbers. And how you respond to those numbers will determine how you respond to the movie. Our heroine is Eve (Emily Browning, never more luminous), a young Glasgow anorexic who one night runs into James (Olly Alexander, never more nerdy), a guitarist whom we first meet arguing with his bandmates onstage. (A funny, throwaway visual gag: Right before they throw down, he and his drummer take off their...

God Help the Girl
Written and directed by Stuart Murdoch
UK, 2014
In 2009, Belle and Sebastian mastermind Stuart Murdoch released a concept album under the guise of God Help the Girl, the name of both the album and the collective of musicians behind it. It was a break away from his Scottish band’s usual stylings in that it was primarily penned for female vocalists known and unknown, though male singers like The Divine Comedy’s Neil Hannon and Murdoch himself made memorable appearances on a few tracks. Additionally, while Belle and Sebastian’s most beloved songs can often be taken as their own singular, compelling tales, the God Help the Girl album was a larger narrative project, with the songs tracking protagonist Eve through various woes and successes. Five years later, a long-gestating film adaptation of the album has arrived, courtesy of producer Barry Mendel (Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums) and some support through Kickstarter,...

God Help the Girl is a sweet indie pop musical about a girl in recovery from a severe eating disorder. The girl in question, Eve, is played by Emily Browning, a lovely young actress who has been in some really crap movies (as well as the great A Series of Unfortunate Events). When we first meet Browning she is sneaking out to go to a rock show in Glasgow, singing the first of the movie’s songs, “Act of the Apostle,” about her trip. After the concert she meets James (Olly Alexander), whose disastrous set ended in a fight with his own drummer. Alexander realizes that she is too weak to get home on her own steam and helps her back to the clinic where she is being treated for anorexia. When she leaves, she seeks him out, and they become the best of friends.

There’s a certain rhetoric about the “perfect pop song” that feels like it peaked 25ish years ago somewhere on a bus in the UK, where earnest young people bonded over shared cultdom to pass the time, the guiding sensibility that (random example) led Orange Juice frontman Edwyn Collins to approach future bandmate Steve Daly because of a Buddy Holly button he was wearing — a sign they had more to talk about than initially evident. God Help the Girl was one of my favorite movies at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Written and directed by Belle and Sebastian’s Stuart Murdoch, the film follows Eve, who is “low on self-esteem but high on fantasy, especially when it comes to music. Over the course of one Glasgow summer, she meets two similarly rootless souls, posh Cass and fastidious James, and together they form a pop group.” Also, it is an indie-pop musical. But it isn’t twee. Strong performances by Emily Browning, Olly Alexander, and Hannah Murray hold down a whimsical, emotionally resonant coming of age story. Also, the songs are really good.
The clip features the song "The Psychiatrist Is In," and it is from early in the film when Eve and James are just getting to know each other.
God Help the Girl opens in select theaters and VOD on September 5.

It’s a quiet Friday and you’ve got the whole holiday weekend ahead of you, so why not start the proceedings on a light and airy musical note? We’ve got just the thing for that: an exclusive three-minute musical sequence from the new movie God Help the Girl (out September 5), written and directed by Belle and Sebastian front man Stuart Murdoch and spun through with songs from his 2009 album of the same name. One of the highlights of that record was “The Psychiatrist Is In,” and the knowing, witty song is the centerpiece of this scene, which finds Eve (Emily Browning) playing armchair analyst to her new friend James (Olly Alexander). The irony is that though she dons a lab coat for this number, Eve is actually playing hooky from the psychiatric institution where she’s being treated; a restless singer-songwriter, Eve would much rather be out on the town,...

Catherine Shoard and Henry Barnes join Xan Brooks for our weekly round-up of the big cinema releases. This week the team watch Scarlett Johansson amp up her noggin in Luc Besson's pop science thriller Lucy; Daniel Radcliffe damp down the laughs in relationship comedy What If; the Dardennes brothers employ Marion Cotillard for Two Days, One Night, a drama about social justice in the job market; and a bunch of indie darlings warble around sunny Glasgow in Belle and Sebastian singer Stuart Murdoch's God Help the Girl

The occasional awkwardness of God Help the Girl is part of its considerable charm. The writer-director Stuart Murdoch (from the band Belle and Sebastian) captures the strange mix of vulnerability and arrogance that its young musician protagonists share. They want, as the bespectacled James (Olly Alexander) puts it, to "place a small flag in the timeline of pop history". They may be pretentious but they are never cynical.

★★★☆☆Scottish musicals are a lot like buses - you wait years for one to come along and then two arrive near simultaneously. Following Dexter Fletcher's all-singing, all-dancing Proclaimers crowdpleaser Sunshine on Leith last year, Belle and Sebastian frontman Stuart Murdoch's Glasgow-set debut, God Help the Girl (2014), is a far smaller, quainter and cooler affair. For better or worse, it's close to watching one of their records writ large on screen, with their whimsical but doleful tunes intact. While Murdoch's directorial style will be too arch at times, it ultimately wins you over like a breeze of fresh Caledonian air. Emily Browning plays Eve, a lonely, anorexic twentysomething in a Glasgow hospital.

Belle and Sebastian honcho Stuart Murdoch's first foray into the world of film, God Help the Girl, will see release in theaters and on-demand on September 5th. The movie tells the story of Eve, an aspiring songwriter who meets fellow musicians James and Cassie during her first summer in Glasgow. Murdoch wrote and directed the film, and has now released a clip in which the trio's newly formed pop outfit performs one of Eve's songs for the first time.

God Help the Girl is a long-gestating musical film project from Stuart Murdoch, leader of Scottish indie pop group Belle and Sebastian. Having first released an album of the same name in 2009 with the help of various female vocalist collaborators, the first-time screenwriter and director finally got the intended film off the ground thanks to the efforts of Us producer Barry Mendel (Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, Bridesmaids) and some Kickstarter donations.
Shot and set in Glasgow, Scotland, the film follows the initially hospital-bound Eve (Emily Browning), who takes on songwriting to help her woes, collaborating with musicians James (Olly Alexander) and Cassie (Hannah Murray). Murdoch’s film got fairly positive buzz from its world and European premieres at Sundance and Berlin respectively, winning an award for its ensemble cast at the former festival.

The first teaser trailer has debuted for “God Help The Girl” starring Emily Browning, Olly Alexander and Hannah Murray. Written and directed by Stuart Murdoch, lead singer of Belle and Sebastian, the Glasgow-set “God Help The Girl” is a musical/coming-of-age story about three friends — played by Browning (“Sleeping Beauty”), Alexander (“The Riot Club”) and Murray (“Skins”) — who form a indie-pop band. Originally released in 2009 by Murdoch as an album of the same title, “God Help The Girl” was produced thanks to the success of a Kickstarter campaign and went on showcase at various international festivals, including Seattle, [...]

Already one of music's finest storytellers, Belle and Sebastian frontman Stuart Murdoch's move into directing with "God Help The Girl" made natural sense. That it was a musical, also made sense. Unfortunately, the resulting film got a mixed reception at Sundance (our review), but there's always the music. "God Help The Girl" finds the cast of Emily Browning, Olly Alexander and Hannah Murray doing the songs from Murdoch's 2009 album of the same, with three new tunes in the mix as well: "Pretty When the Wind Blows," "I Dumped You First," and "I'm Not Rich." And you can get a flavor of it with the title track sung by Browning and co. and yeah, it's totally Murdoch-esque and if you're been a fan of Belle and Sebastian, this will be right up your alley of twee (but not overly so) pop. "God Help The Girl" opens in the UK on August 16th,...

Recently, with Inside Llewyn Davis, the Coen brothers proved that films with little narrative nor direction, about fledging singer songwriters, can be completely charming, wonderful and triumphant. However for first time filmmaker Stuart Murdoch, the frontman of twee indie pop outfit Belle and Sebastian, God Help the Girl goes against that notion entirely, as his very first deviation into the world of film is regrettably underwhelming.
Emily Browning plays Eve, a young girl living in Glasgow, in and out of hospital as she suffers from anxiety and anorexia. To help her get through life she writes music, and it’s at a gig where she meets nerdy guitarist James (Olly Alexander), who instantly hits it off with our protagonist, as he proposes the idea of forming a band. As music works by way of escapism for Eve, she seeks solace in melody, and when they recruit fellow musician Cass (Hannah Murray...

As the masterful pop songsmith behind Belle and Sebastian, Stuart Murdoch has always shown a flare for storytelling. His songs are filled with outcasts and rebels eager to take on the world, or at least find a little peace in it. So it’s only natural that his musical film is at once madcap and melancholy. The film takes place over a summer in which two young women and one young man chase the idea of being in a band. Emily Browning has a magnetic screen presence as a mentally troubled would-be pop sensation trying to figure out what it all...

Sundance just ended, and we are already preparing for the next big film festival, South By Southwest. Not too long ago, the festival announced a few of the films premiering this year, but now they’ve announced the main slate. The midnight selections and some inevitable late-breaking additions are still to be announced, but this should be more than enough to get you excited. Along with many World Premieres, and Sundance favorites like Richard Linklater’s Boyhood and Gareth Evans’ The Raid 2, the line up also includes an anniversary screening of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and an extended Q&A screening of The Grand Budapest Hotel with Wes Anderson. SXSW 2014 runs March 7 through 15 in Austin, Texas. Check out the line up after the jump.
