Finding a new host for The Daily Show wasn’t on anyone’s to-do list at Comedy Central. Not anytime soon, anyway. That changed Sept. 29, as the face of the network’s late night franchise, Trevor Noah, revealed on air that he’d be stepping down after seven years in the role. Until then, executives including Noah’s boss, MTV Entertainment Group CEO Chris McCarthy, who’d had lunch with Noah the previous day, believed he would be staying put at least through the 2023-24 season. After all, he had re-upped his eight-figure deal for two more years at parent company Paramount Global in June. Then, in a stunning twist, Noah announced that he was done.
“We were completely shocked,” says one high-ranking insider, with others there acknowledging they’d watched Noah’s signoff with mouths agape. The South African comedian, who gathered...

ViacomCBS plans to institute another round of layoffs, which this time will impact CBS Entertainment Group.
“We are restructuring various operations at CBS as part our ongoing integration with Viacom, and to adapt to changes in our business, including those related to Covid-19,” said a CBS spokesperson. “Our thoughts today are with our departing colleagues for their friendship, service and many important contributions to CBS.”
The new round of layoffs comes a month after an earlier round of cuts (about 100 people), that included Sarah Babineau, head of content and creative enterprises at Comedy Central, and Smithsonian Networks president Tom Hayden.
Viacom and CBS announced their long-awaited merger, valuing the combined company at roughly $12 billion, last summer. The company said it expects to have $750 million in synergy savings by getting rid of overlapping corporate operations and other savings.

Nickelodeon and Bet got choice spots as ViacomCBS held its first remote upfronts event today with the usual array of inside mocking from Stephen Colbert, Trevor Noah and James Corden.
The kids network and African American-focused network got standalone presentations at the event, which was streamed to advertisers and featured a slew of the company’s talent including an Imagine-esque singalong, although there was little attention on layoff-hit nets such as Comedy Central.
The company touted Nickelodeon shows such as Are You Afraid of the Dark?, which is coming back for a second season, Tyler Perry’s Young Dylan, The Crystal Maze and Danger Force, while also highlighting upcoming titles such as SpongeBob Squarepants spin-off Kamp Koral, Baby Shark’s Big Show, a Star Trek animated series, Imagine Kids + Family drama The Astronauts and the return of The Rugrats.

ViacomCBS celebrated its first full quarter as a recombined company by beating media analysts’ estimates for Q1 2020 revenue and earnings. Unfortunately, both of those metrics declined from the prior year.
Wall Street forecast earnings per share (Eps) of 94 cents on $6.58 billion in revenue, according to a consensus estimate compiled by Yahoo Finance. ViacomCBS actually reported adjusted Eps of $1.13 on $6.67 billion in revenue. That revenue figure was down 6% from the comparable quarter last year, per-share earnings declined 23%.
The company posted a net income of $508 million, a 74% decrease from Q1 2019’s net earnings of $1.946 billion.
Ad sales dropped 19% versus the comparable year-ago quarter, which included CBS’ broadcasts of Super Bowl Liii and the Ncaa Tournament. (The annual March Madness event was canceled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.) Excluding that tough self-comparison, ViacomCBS says ad sales would have been up 2%.

Amid a day of company-wide restructuring at ViacomCBS, Smithsonian Network president Tom Hayden will leaving his post at the end of May, Variety has learned. The reorganization — which includes layoffs of more than 100 employees primarily at MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, Pop and Smithsonian — is part of the ongoing post-merger integration of Viacom and CBS that is designed to provide $750 million in synergies over three years. The layoffs are not related to the current coronavirus outbreak.
A wide range of divisions, from the programming and development executive suite at Comedy Central, as well as editorial staffers as MTV News, have been impacted. Comedy Central head of content and creative enterprises Sarah Babineau is also departing.

It’s been a brutal day across the cable networks of ViacomCBS in a new wave of post CBS-Viacom merger layoffs and reorganization. The highest profile departures have been in the Entertainment & Youth division, which is undergoing the final stage of its integration.

I hear departures include Monika Zielinska, Svp, Original Programming and Development, West Coast; Anne Harris, Svp, Talent and Development, and Tara Schuster, VP, Talent & Development.

Exclusive:: A big new wave of post Viacom-CBS merger layoffs started today. ViacomCBS is not commenting beyond the note sent this morning by CEO Bob Bakish\, but according to sources, layoffs are said to be across the entire organization.

ViacomCBS CEO Bob Bakish sent an email to staff on Wednesday after the company laid off people across the organization. The cuts total at least 100 employees, including top execs such as Smithsonian Network President Tom Hayden and Comedy Central head of content and creative enterprises Sarah Babineau.
The newly merged company is still in the midst of cutting costs and streamlining its business following the tie-up between Viacom and CBS. It’s unclear, however, how precisely many people were let go. In late February, ViacomCBS announced plans with New York state to lay off 117 East Coast staffers across 11 divisions.
ViacomCBS did not comment beyond Bakish’s memo to staff.

Reno 911! will soon walk the television beat once again, this time on streaming platform Quibi.
Last December, it was announced that Quibi—a short-form streaming service backed by the coffers of Jeffrey Katzenberg and six major studio investors—will be the platform on which the Reno 911! revival manifests. Indeed, the classification as a “revival” is accurate, since this will be a proper continuation of the popular Cops-parodying mockumentary series, which originally ran on Comedy Central for six seasons (2003-2009). Thus, this is essentially a belated release of Reno 911! Season 7, albeit in a shorter form than we remember.
Original series creators (and main cast members) Thomas Lennon, Robert Ben Garant and Kerri Kenney-Silver return to write and star in the Reno revival. 2020-launching streaming platform Quibi is getting a revival series of classic Cops spoof series Reno 911!.
Reno 911! will soon walk the television beat once again, this time on streaming platform Quibi.
It has been announced that Quibi – a short-form streaming service backed by the coffers of Jeffrey Katzenberg and six major studio investors – will be the platform on which the Reno 911! revival manifests. Indeed, the classification as a “revival” is accurate, since this will be a proper continuation of the popular Cops-parodying mockumentary series, which originally ran on Comedy Central for six seasons (2003-2009). Thus, this is essentially a belated release of Reno 911! Season 7.
Original series creators (and main cast members) Thomas Lennon, Robert Ben Garant and Kerri Kenney-Silver return to write and star in the Reno revival. They will be joined by Artists First’s Peter Principato, who serves as an executive producer,...

On Monday, Comedy Central released the official trailer for “Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens,” the highly-anticipated sitcom created by and starring rapper-actress Awkwafina.
Inspired by Awkwafina’s real-life experiences growing up in Flushing, Queens, “Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens” follows twentysomething Nora Lin (Awkwafina) as she attempts to find a purpose in her life and clumsily navigate her way through young adulthood. All while she still lives with her dad (Bd Wong) and possibly over-supportive grandmother (Lori Tan Chinn).
In the trailer, which you can watch below, Nora sobs as she confides in her friend Chenise (Makeda Declet). “I wish I had purpose like you, you dumb b****,” she cries. So it’s time for Nora to find a suitable job, but if it were just that easy, Nora wouldn’t exactly be where she is now. After all, as she tells her cousin (Bowen Yang), she doesn’t even know her social security number.
