Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) will next be seen in the upcoming thriller Borderline, and a couple first-look images from the film have made their way online this week.
Eric Dane and Ray Nicholson also star in director Jimmy Warden‘s (writer: Cocaine Bear) movie. Warden wrote the film, and will be making his directorial debut.
In Borderline, described as a violent comedy-thriller, “A bodyguard protects a pop superstar and her athlete boyfriend from a determined stalker in 1990s Los Angeles.”
Here’s the full official synopsis: “The writer of Cocaine Bear is back with another twisted tale. A star-obsessed sociopath, and his fellow inmates, escape from a mental institution and invade the home of his ‘90s pop superstar. He just wants to be loved; she just wants to survive.”
The cast also includes Alba Baptista and Jimmie Fails.

Exclusive: In a competitive situation with multiple studios bidding, 20th Century Studios has reeled in theatrical distribution rights to Imagine Entertainment’s thriller Whalefall, based on the recently published novel by bestseller Daniel Kraus.
Aboard to co-write, direct, and produce the film is Brian Duffield, who has a strong relationship with 20th President Steve Asbell and his team, following their work together on the acclaimed sci-fi thriller No One Will Save You. Imagine snapped the book up for development in a pre-emptive film rights deal last summer, as we were first to report.
Published last summer by MTV Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, Whalefall is described as The Martian meets 127 Hours. The book is about a scuba diver in search of his deceased father’s remains who gets swallowed by an eighty-foot, sixty-ton sperm whale and has only one hour to escape before his oxygen runs out. Samara Weaving is buckling up for 20th Century Studios forthcoming heist thriller Eenie Meanie. Sitting shotgun for the project is Karl Glusman, with writer-director Shawn Simmons at the helm. Producing the fast-paced thriller is Deadpool franchise alums Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.
In Eenie Meanie, Samara Weaving plays Edie, “a former teenage getaway driver who is dragged back into her unsavory past when a former employer offers her a chance to save the life of her chronically unreliable ex-boyfriend.” (via Deadline)
Glusman hits the pavement as John, Edie’s recurrent boyfriend. Despite their differences, Edie feels compelled to pull John out of the flames of a terrible situation.
As one of my favorite actors in the business today, Samara Weaving is a force of nature. For some of her best performances, check out Joe Lynch’s Mayhem. The 2017 action-comedy is like Office Space meets The Raid and is a must-watch.

“Barbie” is a cultural phenomenon, grossing nearly $1.5 billion and racking up eight Oscar nominations, all while launching scores of catchphrases and memes.
So it’s understandable that Mattel, the company behind the iconic doll, is looking to capitalize on its cinematic success by developing dozens of movies based on its games and toys. Moviegoers can look forward to Barney, Bob the Builder and He-Man hitting the big screen in the not-so-distant future.
But as Hollywood raids toy store shelves to feed its insatiable hunger for IP, it’s worth noting that when it comes to this type of film, for every “Barbie”-sized smash there’s a “Battleship”-like bomb. With that in mind, here are some of the movies that Mattel has in the works.

Pic will be produced by Bateman and Michael Costigan’s Aggregate Films, with Af’s Amanda Anka also producing. Gordon & Speck will also produce through their Speck Gordon Inc. banner.
Cocaine Bear’s Jimmy Warden will write the screenplay, and they are keeping plot specifics under wraps.
This marks the third collaboration between Bateman and Speck & Gordon, after they teamed on The Switch and Office Christmas Party.
Aggregate’s Drew Brennan and Speck Gordon’s Eric Fineman will shepherd the pic.
Bateman most recently co-starred in the Ben Affleck-directed Air, and Aggregate produced the Richard Linklater-directed Hit Man, which became the big acquisition of the Toronto Film Festival when Netflix acquired it in a $20 million deal.

Olivia Wilde is set to direct the film Naughty, which comes from the scribe behind this year’s Cocaine Bear.
Two films in, Olivia Wilde as a movie director has had to deal with a gigantic amount of issues that ordinarily might be expected to be spread over many more productions. The acclaimed Booksmart and the liked but less acclaimed Don’t Worry Darling are to her name as a director thus far. She’s now chosen the project that’s going to be number three on her list.
It’s a comedy by the name of Naughty, that has come from the pen of a man named Jimmy Warden. He was credited this year with the script for Cocaine Bear, and if he came up with the ambulance sequence, then I’m very happy to buy him a nice coffee.

Hollywood is leaving milk and cookies out for Olivia Wilde this holiday season with news that she’s striking a deal with LuckyChap to direct Naughty, a comedy described as Bridesmaids in the North Pole. Cocaine Bear writer Jimmy Warden wrote the script with Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, and Josey McNamara, producing through LuckyChap.
According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, Naughty follows Mallory, whose only hope of securing custody of her son from her gaslighting trashbag ex is to find Santa Claus in the North Pole and convince him to testify in her divorce hearing.
In case you forgot, LuckyChap produced Barbie, which earned $1.4 billion at the worldwide box office. Combine Barbie‘s success level with Wilde’s in-demand status as a filmmaker, and you’ve got a recipe for making money fall in a blizzard-like fashion.
Wilde’s next film is the biographical sports drama Perfect, starring McKenna Grace and Thomasin McKenzie.

Robbie, Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara produce via their LuckyChap banner. A studio is not yet attached.
Despite being clouded by headline-grabbing drama for months surrounding its release, Wilde’s latest feature, “Don’t Worry Darling,” was a commercial success. Filmed near the end of 2015, director McG’s horror comedy The Babysitter was released through the Netflix streaming service during the Halloween season of 2017 – and not only did it help establish Samara Weaving as a modern genre icon, it also did well enough to spawn a sequel. The Babysitter: Killer Queen was released by Netflix in September of 2020. Three years later (and eight years after he was in production on the first film), McG has confirmed to ComicBook.com that he’s still interested in making The Babysitter 3!
McG said, “We’re still talking about it. It was fun. The first movie, obviously, gave Samara Weaving to the world, and the second movie was Jenna Ortega. Hopefully we can answer the call and find a third star that reaches those lofty heights.“

People say truth is stranger than fiction, but the story in "Cocaine Bear" the movie is definitely more interesting than the true story behind it. In real life, the bear dubbed Pablo Eskobear ate a bunch of coke that was dumped from a drug smuggling plane and died from an overdose. In the vision of bloody mayhem created by director Elizabeth Banks and writer Jimmy Warden, though, the bear in question went on a drug-fueled murder spree, mauling anyone who got in her way. Even Margo Martindale wasn't safe!
"Cocaine Bear" landed in the zeitgeist earlier this year, taking Twitter by storm before its release, thanks to its wild title and even wilder premise. The movie ultimately grossed over $87 million at the box office (per Box Office Mojo). An attention-catching genre mashup with a relatively lean budget and a good theatrical haul should be like studio exec catnip, so where's the "Cocaine Bear" sequel news?...

For those who watched Dan Trachtenberg‘s amazing Predator prequel Prey on Hulu last summer, you are in for another terrific sci-fi film.
Hulu is streaming No One Will Save You on Sept. 22, 2023, in the U.S., Star+ in Latin America, and Disney+ in all other territories.
An Invasion Is Imminent, according to Brian Duffield, who wrote and directed 20th Century Studios’ “No One Will Save You,” a sci-fi psychological thriller told through the eyes of a lonely young woman with a painful backstory. “I wanted the movie to take the lead of a small intimate character study and drop an alien invasion on top of them,” says Duffield. “The end of the world won’t only be for those that are ready for it, and the idea of an alien movie rudely bursting the bubble our character has spent years building and cultivating felt like a unique way to tell a favorite story.

Director Elizabeth Banks’ “character-driven thriller” Cocaine Bear (read our review Here, get a copy at This Link) wasn’t exactly a blockbuster – it earned $89 million at the worldwide box office on a budget in the range of 30 to 35 million – but it did get a lot of positive attention when it was released. And I thought it was a blast to watch. So I welcome a Cocaine Bear 2… and during an interview with Rolling Stone, Banks said she would also welcome it.
When asked about the possibility of working on a sequel, Banks told Rolling Stone, “I had an absolutely great time working on the (first movie). A few weeks ago, in the build-up to the release of the Mattel Films production Barbie (read our review Here), The New Yorker published an article about the fact that Mattel is “raiding its entire toybox” to find products to turn into movies – for example, J.J. Abrams is working on Hot Wheels, Vin Diesel is plotting Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, Daniel Kaluuya is making a Barney movie, Tom Hanks will star in Major Matt Mason (author Michael Chabon has written the treatment), a script is being written for American Girl, etc. From that article, we learned that Cocaine Bear screenwriter Jimmy Warden has been writing a horror comedy inspired by Mattel’s toy Magic 8 Ball. In the wake of Barbie‘s smash hit success at the box office, Mattel is going all-in on turning their toy properties into movie properties, and one of the films in the works is an adaptation of the iconic Magic 8 Ball toy. The planned Magic 8-Ball movie was originally announced back in 2019, you may recall, and we’ve got a little bit more information this week.
Chatting with Variety this week about the company’s upcoming movie slate, Robbie Brenner from Mattel Films tells the site that the Magic 8 Ball movie is very much still on the menu.
Brenner teases that the film will “probably be a PG-13 thriller.”

1. Samara Weaving was the first and only choice for the opening scene.
Samara Weaving, who starred in Radio Silence’s Ready or Not, was the first and only choice to play Laura, the ill-fated film studies professor that serves as the opening kill. The actress has stated it’s the closest character to herself she’s ever played.
Gillett says, “We were walking to dinner in Montreal when we were like, ‘Let’s just call her and see if she’s game.'” They did so, and “she was super, super game to come and hang out with us for a few days.

A couple years ago, it was announced that Shawn Simmons – creator and executive producer of the Prime Video series Wayne – would be writing an “irreverent high-speed thriller” for 20th Century Studios, with fellow Wayne executive producers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (who are best known for writing Zombieland and the Deadpool movies) on board to produce the film. Now Deadline has confirmed that the project is moving forward under the title Eenie Meanie, with Simmons directing and Samara Weaving taking on the lead role.
Eenie Meanie is expected to be released through the Hulu streaming service. The story centers on a former teenage getaway driver who is dragged back into her unsavory past when a former employer offers her a chance to save the life of her chronically unreliable ex-boyfriend. With Weaving signing on to star in the film, it sounds like we know who’s going to be playing that getaway driver.

With Weaving signing on to star in the film, it sounds like we know who’s going to be playing that getaway driver.

Welcome to the Ghostface Glossary, a guide to every horror reference and nod throughout all six films in the Scream franchise thus far. Click the link to see previous articles.
After a lot of pausing, rewinding, and zooming in, as well as researching, we’re catching all of the many horror-specific references Williamson, Craven, and Co. included in this beloved postmodern slasher franchise. If we’ve forgotten any glaring ones, kindly let us know.
“Who gives a fuck about movies?!”
“Forget about the movies— the movies don’t matter.” Jason Voorhees, Patrick Bateman, Frank Zito. Now Ghostface. New York City may be the most exciting city in the world, but it can also be one of the scariest, and it was only a matter of time before Scream migrated from sleepy Woodsboro to the East Coast, giving much-needed kinetic energy and gritty set pieces to the long-running, postmodern slasher franchise.

Four years ago, it was announced that Blumhouse Productions and director Jeff Wadlow were teaming up again for a movie based on the Mattel toy Magic 8 Ball. Yes, the ball that you ask questions and then turn over to see which of twenty possible answers you might get. Since so much time has passed since that announcement was made, it’s not clear if Blumhouse or Wadlow are still involved with the project – but The New Yorker has revealed that Magic 8 Ball is still in the works, and Cocaine Bear screenwriter Jimmy Warden is writing the horror comedy.
The New Yorker reports that Mattel is “raiding its entire toybox” to find products to turn into movies, with Barbie looking like it’s going to be one of the biggest hits of the year. J.J. Abrams is working on Hot Wheels, Vin Diesel is plotting Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots,...

Developed in the 1950s and manufactured by Mattel, the novelty Magic 8 Ball is one of the most iconic toys of all time, and it’s now getting a feature-length movie adaptation.
It was announced four years ago that Mattel and Blumhouse were joining forces to turn the toy into a live-action movie, with Jeff Wadlow (Truth or Dare) attached to direct.
It’s unclear if Blumhouse or Wadlow are still attached, but in a new feature in the New Yorker highlighting Barbie, it’s revealed that “Jimmy Warden, the screenwriter of Cocaine Bear, ha[s] devised a horror-comedy about the Magic 8 Ball.”
The approach, Robbie Brenner, head of Mattel Films told the mag, had been a subject of some debate. “We’re not going to make any rated-r movies,” she promised. Although the Magic 8 Ball script “walks the line a little bit,” she went on, “we’re not...

Daniel Kaluuya is taking Barney to the next level.
The Oscar winner is set to star in and produce an upcoming live-action film adaptation of the children’s TV show. However, there’s a tonal twist to the project, as teased by Mattel Films executive Kevin McKeon.
“We’re leaning into the millennial angst of the property rather than fine-tuning this for kids. It’s really a play for adults,” McKeon told The New Yorker. “Not that it’s R-rated, but it’ll focus on some of the trials and tribulations of being thirtysomething, growing up with Barney — just the level of disenchantment within the generation.”
McKeon described the film as an “A24-type” “surrealistic” story akin to Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze’s respective works. “It would be so daring of us,” McKeon said, “and really underscore that we’re here to make art.”

With roles in horror films like "The Babysitter," "Ready or Not," and "Scream 6," Australian actor Samara Weaving has earned her status as a scream queen. Up next, she's set to star in the comedic thriller "Borderline," which her husband, Jimmy Warden, is writing and directing. But it's not the first time the couple have worked on a project together. Warden actually helped produce both "Babysitter" films, which is how the couple first crossed paths, according to Daily Mail.
Weaving and Warden met on the set of "The Babysitter" in 2015 and began dating shortly afterward. They were reportedly together for three years before the "Cocaine Bear" writer asked Weaving to marry him in 2019. While she didn't confirm they'd tied the knot until 2022, Warden hinted on Instagram that the couple had secretly said "I do" the same year they got engaged.

Samara Weaving has been a scream queen, an action star, and now, the embodiment of multiple real-life feminist icons.
First up, the “Ready or Not” breakout star portrays French aristocrat Marie-Joséphine de Montalembert in this week’s new release “Chevalier” opposite Kelvin Harrison Jr. After that, Weaving will transform into former Playboy bunny Holly Madison for limited series “Down the Rabbit Hole,” and will then travel back in time once more to play Elizabeth Patterson Bonaparte in “Liz.”
“Maybe I’m a masochist. You read a really good script or a really good pitch and you can’t say no to it,” Weaving told IndieWire of her period piece nods to real people. “Elizabeth Bonaparte, I’m a huge fan of [director] Adam Leon’s work. ‘Italian Studies’ is one of my favorite movies, so just working with him is going to be awesome. Get your mirror plates ready, and don’t leave any food out in the open because Cocaine Bear is about to rage on Peacock. The laugh-out-loud R-rated comedy is coming to the streaming service 50 days after its theatrical debut on April 14. Elizabeth Banks directs from a script by Jimmy Warden about a massive black bear that rampages through the woods after finding bags of cocaine in the woods.
If you’re unaware of the true story that inspires Cocaine Bear, well, it’s a doozy. In 1985, convicted drug smuggler Andrew Thornton was on a smuggling run from Columbia and had dumped several packages full of cocaine before jumping from the plane himself. Unfortunately, he hit his head on the tail of the aircraft and wound up in a free fall to the ground, where he was found dead in someone’s driveway. Several months later, authorities discovered a 175-pound black...

Just when you thought the film “Cocaine Bear” wasn’t a strange enough concept to intake, “Cocaine Cat” is now trending online after a wild African cat tested positive for the stimulant drug.
First things first: the cat —which is named Amiry — is in the hands of animal caretakers and is receiving treatment. This all started when officials in Ohio responded to reports that a “leopard” was stuck in a tree. When authorities arrived they found what is categorized as an African serval cat, a member of the feline family that is illegal to own in the state.

Among the long history of boxing films, the “Creed” films have stood apart from their predecessors in the genre in how they shoot the action in the ring. In fact, as the new “Creed III” demonstrates, they even stand apart from each other.
“Creed III” sees series star Michael B. Jordan make his directorial debut with a threequel in which Adonis comes face-to-face with his childhood friend Damian (Jonathan Majors), a Golden Gloves-winning amateur boxer who went to jail for reasons not immediately revealed. Feeling that the success and opportunity Creed enjoys was taken from him, Dame’s initially warm reunion with the now-retired champion turns south, culminating in a deeply personal fight before a sold-out crowd at Dodger Stadium.
But after an initial exchange of haymakers between Creed and Dame, the fight abruptly transforms, plunging the two fighters and the audience into a surreal dream world. The thousands of...

Forget Leonardo DiCaprio crawling on all fours in The Wolf of Wall Street; the funniest portrayal of drugs on film is an American black bear throwing famed character actor Margo Martindale from an out-of-control ambulance before hoovering up a mountain of blow. Within the space of a week, Elizabeth Banks’s comedy horror film Cocaine Bear has rampaged, gakked-up and bug-eyed, into the annals of drug-movie classics. And, if we’re being frank, it’s mostly because of the film’s title.
“We were definitely expecting a lot of resistance to the title,” says producer Chris Miller, who with his partner Phil Lord has helped shepherd into cinemas high-concept features such as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and The Lego Movie for more than a decade. “We were expecting a call at some point telling us that we couldn’t actually call it Cocaine Bear – it’d have to be ‘The...

Nobody thought it was possible but last weekend, Universal’s “Cocaine Bear” nearly gobbled up “Ant-Man” at the box office. Much of that success can be linked to its ingenious meme-driven marketing strategy, which exploited the inherently goofy possibilities of a movie with a name like “Cocaine Bear” while still making sure that people knew that this was a real (and very fun movie).
When it came to identifying that “Cocaine Bear” will make for a strong, meme-worthy campaign, Alex Sanger, Universal’s executive vice president of global digital marketing, read the room.
“[Director] Elizabeth Banks gifted us all with this film and the pure, carnal delights it consistently delivers on every level,” Sanger said. “She grabbed the world’s attention from the day the title announcement went out and never let go. Cocaine Bear’s appeal starts – and, for many, ends – with its title. The movie promises one thing – a bear high on cocaine – and the only question is which approach director Elizabeth Banks will take: the one that treats it seriously and says “this is the scariest thing ever,” or the one that says “we’re making a movie called Cocaine Bear. Isn’t that crazy?”
Banks – supported by producers Christopher Lord and Phil Miller, who never met a crazy premise they could ignore – wisely takes the second route, leaning into the humor and carnage that collide under its absurd premise. And whether you like it or loathe it, you will probably walk away going: “yep; that’s exactly what I thought a movie called Cocaine Bear would be.”

‘Cocaine Bear’ is the new creature feature from Universal Pictures that seems as chaotic as the premise. Elizabeth Banks makes an absurd concept palatable for even the weary. Opening with the contents of fourteen billion dollars worth of cocaine spilling out of the plane, into the Chattahoochee National Forest in Georgia. A black bear gets into the stash, unleashing it on a rampage against campers, criminals, and cops. The film is an amusing concept as most of us are already intrigued by the thought of a bear on drugs. Those that share the wonder will be intrigued to follow the cast of characters on their journey to escape the bear while she goes on a rampage. The concept alone makes it a comedy horror film that shouldn’t be taken too seriously, but not certainly not slept on. If you have yet to hear of this soon-to-be coked-out camp classic, the premise is a bunch of cocaine gets dumped in the woods, and a bear does a lot of said cocaine and then murders a call sheet full of characters looking for more. The real story ended tragically with the bear dying from an overdose, but luckily the film takes about three kilos worth of liberties with the events. Imagine taking a screwball ensemble comedy and mixing it with an ultra-gory '80s creature B-movie, and you'll get a sniff of what this movie is cooking up.
It would be a total buzzkill if it didn't live up to...

And why would you? Cocaine Bear perfectly sums up the recently released movie by Elizabeth Banks, but when you choose that title, you’d better deliver. Cocaine Bear writer Jimmy Warden spoke with THR and said that he never once considered giving the movie another title.
“There was never a question in my mind,” Jimmy Warden said. “Why wouldn’t we call it Cocaine Bear? It’s not every day that a title comes your way that describes the movie in two words. You understand exactly what it is and what you want it to be.” I’m reminded of Snakes on a Plane being briefly changed to Pacific Air Flight 121 before Samuel L. Jackson demanded that it be returned to the original title. Thankfully, Cocaine Bear has fared better than Snakes on a Plane.

If you’re on a cinematic high after watching Cocaine Bear, you’re not alone. The outlandish adventure film about a bear on a blow-fueled, blood-soaked rampage roared into theaters on Feb. 24 with a better-than-expected $23.1 million.
Directed by Elizabeth Banks, Cocaine Bear was inspired by the true tale of a 175-pound black bear found in the forests of Georgia in 1985 surrounded by 40 open containers of smuggled coke. But that’s as far as the facts go when it comes to the fictional R-rated film, which stars a 500-pound CGI black bear alongside human actors Keri Russell, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Christian Convery, Alden Ehrenreich, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and the late Ray Liotta (in one of his last roles).

On February 24, 2023, Universal released “Cocaine Bear,” Elizabeth Banks‘ comedy-horror flick that raked in $22 million its opening weekend. An oddball group of cops, criminals, tourists and teens converge on a Georgia forest where a huge black bear goes on a murderous rampage after unintentionally ingesting cocaine. The film, which currently holds a score of 70% on Rotten Tomatoes, has garnered generally positive reviews.
The critics consensus reads, “Despite Cocaine Bear‘s half-baked plot and uneven acting, the titular fur fiend’s scene-snorting frenzy will give B-movie enthusiasts a contact high.” The ensemble cast (beyond VFX-driven “Cokey” the bear) includes Keri Russell, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Christian Convery, Alden Ehrenreich, Brooklynn Prince, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Margo Martindale and the late Ray Liotta. Read our review roundup below.

In 1985, Andrew Thornton, a corrupt lawyer-turned-drug smuggler, dumped packages of cocaine over Georgia before attempting to escape with nearly 80 pounds of the drug strapped to his body. However, the parachute malfunctioned, and Thornton fell to his death in a Georgia resident’s driveway. The rest of the drugs landed in a forest and were consumed by a black bear, who overdosed and died within minutes, eating $20 million worth of the white powder. But what if the bear didn’t die? What if instead, the bear went on a killing rampage, and the lives of some very plain and bland characters crossed paths with the drug-fuelled predator? Well that seems to be the exact question the writers of Cocaine Bear have asked themselves.

Cocaine Bear (read our review Here) screenwriter Jimmy Warden has said that he has ideas for multiple sequels to the film, and some movie-goers have already let it be known that they’re hoping and waiting for a movie that would be called Cocaine Shark. But while we wait to see if Cocaine Bear is going to spawn a franchise, the mockbuster masters at The Asylum have unveiled a poster of the mockbuster they have made to cash in on the Cocaine Bear hype: a movie called Attack of the Meth Gator! An exact release date hasn’t been announced, but we can expect to see Attack of the Meth Gator sometime this summer.
We can only assume that Attack of the Meth Gator is going to be about an alligator going on a killing spree after consuming meth, much like Cocaine Bear is about a bear going on a killing spree after consuming cocaine.

A strong genre hook is almost always a win at the box office, so it’s no surprise that Universal’s Elizabeth Banks-directed horror comedy Cocaine Bear enjoyed a nice debut weekend.
Outpacing early projections in the days prior to release, the film snorted up $23 million domestically and $28.4 million worldwide in its debut this past weekend. This put the movie in the #2 spot for the weekend, not far behind Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
The only catch? Cocaine Bear carries a production budget of around $30 million, so it’s going to need to do a bit more blow before it starts being profitable. But with strong word-of-mouth, it’s likely that the film will continue to make money in the coming weeks. Will it ultimately be enough to hit the point of profitability? We’ll keep you posted as numbers come in.
