Plan B Entertainment partners Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner play their cards close to their chests when it comes to strategy and upcoming plans.
Co-president Kleiner gave a rare insight into the company’s inner workings this week at the San Sebastian Film Festival’s Creative Investor Conference, organized in association with CAA Media Finance.
“To do this gig you have to have some underlying idealism and optimism,” he said of navigating the current volatile market as a producer.
“We’re working with a mix of established filmmakers and more emerging talent. The spectrum is really wide. Whether its Nia DaCosta, Bing Liu, David Michod, Lee Isaac Chung or RaMell Ross, Bong [Joon-Ho], or Jo Kosinski on his Formula One movie, things kind of find their place but I definitely feel like the bar seems quite high these days.”

Exclusive: Veteran executive and producer Nina Wolarsky, who helped put Netflix on the original series map, has joined Plan B Entertainment as the company’s first ever President of Television.
The high profile hire signals a major television expansion following Mediawan’s acquisition of a majority stake in Brad Pitt’s Plan B last December.
Known for its formidable film portfolio, which includes three Best Picture nominees and one winner, 12 Years a Slave, Plan B had ventured into television with such projects as the Emmy-winning HBO movie The Normal Heart and the Emmy-nominated HBO movie Nightingale and Prime Video series The Underground Railroad.
The company telegraphed its growing ambitions in the TV space two years ago with the hire of Scott Free’s Carina Sposato and Netflix’s Ernest McNealey as Plan B’s first dedicated, senior-level TV executives. The duo will now be part of Wolarsky’s team.

Female directors hit another milestone tonight when The Crown‘s Jessica Hobbs won Outstanding Directing For a Drama Series and Hacks‘ Lucia Aniello Won Outstanding Directing For a Comedy Series, respectively. This marks the first time women have swept both directing categories in the same year.
Hobbs being recognized for directing the Season 4 finale of Netflix’s The Crown, marks only the fourth time in 67 years that the Emmy Award in the Outstanding Directing For a Drama Series category has been won by a woman.
The rarity of the occasion was not lost on Hobbs, who also was nominated in the category for The Crown last year
“Not a lot of women have won this award so I feel I’m standing on the shoulders of some really extraordinary people,” she said on stage accepting the awards. “I’m very grateful for the path they led, and I particularly would...

After a lengthy search for a No.2 in the U.S., Netflix’s head of Global Television Bela Bajaria has reached within the company ranks. Peter Friedlander, who has been heading up the company’s new Spectacle/Event programming department, has been named Head of Ucan Scripted Series. Brian Wright, who has been heading its Overall Deals department, will exit.
In addition to having the drama and comedy teams, led by Jinny Howe & Renate Radford (drama) and Tracey Pakosta (comedy), report to him, Friedlander will also continue to oversee the Spectacle/Event programming department and will now also run the Overall Deals department.
A month after Bajaria took over as VP, Global TV last September, a move that led to the departure of long-time exec Cindy Holland, she restructured its U.S. programming team, leaving the head of U.S. series post vacant.

The Crown is having another royal evening – winning best drama series for the second time.
The Netflix series won best drama series in 2017 and has triumphed again, albeit with a new cast.
The drama beat Lovecraft Country, The Mandalorian, Ozark and Ratched to win the top TV drama prize.
Creator Peter Morgan had a long list of people to thank including the cast and crew of the show, Left Bank, Sony Pictures TV and his family as well Netflix executives Cindy Holland and Nina Wolarsky – two execs that he pointed out were no longer at the streaming service.
“I’m just sorry I’m sitting in my tragic little office not surrounded by the people who make the show such a pleasure,” he said. “Quite frankly, I miss not being with all my fellow nominees, in that wonderful room, in that crazy room at the Beverly Hilton. I’m glad...

2021 Golden Globe Final Predictions:
Best TV Series (Drama)
Updated: Feb. 24, 2021
Awards Commentary:
Personally, we wouldn’t be mad to see a surprise victory by “Lovecraft Country” here. That show managed to explore the topics of racial injustice and violence, particularly in the Jim Crow era, through the lens of pulp horror — and to amazing results. But alas, the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. didn’t nominate its stars, Jurnee Smollett and Jonathan Majors, leaving us to wonder how committed they are to the HBO series. “The Mandalorian” was an Emmy victor several times over thanks to various craft categories, and “Ratched” comes from the awards bait of Mr. Ryan Murphy. But it likely comes down to two other Netflix dramas: “Ozark” and “The Crown.

Netflix has found its head of comedy development in former NBC scripted executive Tracey Pakosta.
The move reunites Pakosta with Bela Bajaria, her former Universal TV boss. Prior to her role at NBC, where Pakosta served as co-president of scripted programming, Pakosta was executive vice president of comedy at Universal Television.
When Bajaria set her global leadership team last month, a head of comedy was a notable omission. Bajaria has still not yet named a new head of U.S. series, a role that was previously filled by Netflix’s longtime VP of original content, Cindy Holland, who left the company in September when new co-ceo Ted Sarandos promoted Bajaria. Until that post is occupied, the execs above will report directly to Bajaria.
Said Pakosta: “I’ve spent many hours watching as a fan, and now I am incredibly excited to join Bela and the Netflix original series team. Comedy is my favorite playground,...

Following the exit of several top executives, Netflix’s head of global television Bela Bajaria has set her new global leadership team and overhauled the streaming service’s U.S. operations under her purview, creating a new overalls team in the process.
As part of the reorganization, on the domestic side, Brian Wright is now leading overall deals, original series. Wright will lead this new team, which will work closely with high-profile pacts, including Netflix’s deals with Ryan Murphy, The Duffer Brothers and 21 Laps. Wright’s previous position heading up YA/Family series will now be consolidated into the drama and comedy teams.
Bajaria has named Peter Friedlander head of spectacle/event TV, focusing on high-concept drama series with high production values, like “The Three-Body Problem,” “Black Mirror” and “Narcos.”

A month and a half after being elevated to Head of Global TV at Netflix, Bela Bajaria has reorganized the streamer’s U.S. TV operation with an increased focus on tentpole shows and getting the most from mega overall deals. The realignment also enhances the portfolios of some executives on her international bench.
The U.S. streamlining includes the closing of the Young Adult/Family series department whose duties will be absorbed by the Drama and Comedy teams. The consolidation has led to the departures of fewer than 10 members of the series content team below VP level. Brian Wright, who ran the YA/family group, will now head a new Overall Deals department, while Jinny Howe and Renate Radford will lead the drama team. Meanwhile, Peter Friedlander, who led the Genre & Thrillers subsection of the drama department, will now head a new Spectacle/Event programming department that will be separate from drama and comedy.

A little more than a month after being named head of global TV at Netflix, Bela Bajaria has set her leadership team.
The new management structure puts all television worldwide under one umbrella, and follows a weeks-long period that saw several top programming executives leave the streamer.
“Each of the roles has greenlight power, so that approach of decentralized decision-making continues because it’s good for our members and good for the business,” Bajaria tells Variety of the new structure. “I wanted to eliminate silos and clarify the lanes, both internally and for creators, so my goal for this streamlined approach is that our priorities are clear: drama, comedy and unscripted, and the new overalls team to be led by Brian Wright.”
The reorganization also includes layoffs, with 10 members of the series content team leaving the company.

Another Netflix original programming executive is exiting amid the ongoing restructuring at the company.
Nina Wolarsky has stepped down as vice president of original series – drama, just weeks after the departures of comedy exec Jane Wiseman and drama series boss, Channing Dungey, to whom Wolarsky most recently reported. Wolarsky had been with the company for eight years.
According to an individual familiar with that matter, Wolarsky’s decision to leave stemmed from recent changes to her role as part of the ongoing reorganization of the company’s TV operations under the new global head of television, Bela Bajaria.

Nina Wolarsky is leaving her post as VP, Original Series – Drama at Netflix. She will stay on to help with the transition; her last day will be in November.
Wolarsky was one of the first senior executive hires for Cindy Holland’s original content team, joining the streamer from Smoke House in 2012.
The departure is part of the aftershocks from the seismic shift in Netflix’s content TV triggered by the elevation of Bela Bajaria to VP Global TV by co-ceo Ted Sarandos, which led to Holland exiting the company.
The change at the top of the Netflix TV reporting structure tricked down and put Holland’s direct reports and other senior programming executives in play.
Channing Dungey, VP, Original series and head of drama, left to become chairman of the Warner Bros. Television Group.
Wolarsky, who oversaw Netflix’s non-genre drama series team under Dungey, also saw her role changing and opted to depart.

Exclusive: Veteran comedy executive Jane Wiseman is joining Netflix‘s original programming team as senior executive, reporting to Cindy Holland and working alongside senior execs Peter Friedlander and Nina Wolarsky. Netflix doesn’t have defined beats though Wiseman is expected to focus on comedy while also crossing over to drama. She is the first network/studio development executive to join Netflix — Holland is a Netflix veteran from its pre-original programming days, while Friedlander and Wolarsky came from the Paytone and Smoke House production companies, respectively. Wiseman spent the past two and a half years at 20th TV-based Chernin Entertainment as Svp Comedy. Before that, Wiseman was Svp Comedy Development for NBC and sister studio and Universal TV (then Ums). With the Oscars only hours away, many of the categories look pretty much sewn up, and no doubt in La right now, sure-thing winners are putting final touches to their speeches for the big night.
One of the few categories the still very much an open field is Best Adapted Screenplay, with Argo, Life of Pi and Silver Linings Playbook all possible winners.
We caught up with Argo screenwriter Chris Terrio last week, when he made a flying visit to London for the BAFTAs, and it turns out we weren’t the only ones, as Terrio explains:
Chris Terrio: I had a meeting with Paul Greengrass, I’m working on this film that Clooney’s going to be in that Paul and I are doing, so we’d planned to get together and talk, and then with the delay everything got pushed back.
HeyUGuys: Was that in the UK you were meeting Paul Greengrass?...

Ben Affleck may have been busy prepping for Argo, but we didn’t know too much about the film itself beside Affleck directing and starring alongside Alan Arkin, Bryan Cranston, and John Goodman. Now Warner Brothers has released an official plot synopsis for Argo and announced that Kyle Chandler, Tate Donovan, Rory Cochrane and Taylor Schilling will be added to the cast.
The film adapts the true story of a CIA team that posed as a film crew in order to extract diplomats from Tehran in 1979. But as exciting as the premise sounds, the recent cast additions that include the great Michael Parks (above), as well as Clea Duvall and Richard Kind makes the film sound greater than it already is.
So this is the official plot synopsis,

Warner Bros has sent out the obligatory press release to announce the commencement of filming on Ben Affleck's third film as director, Argo. We've known most of the cast for a while: Affleck, Alan Arkin, Bryan Cranston, and John Goodman, with more recent additions Kyle Chandler, Tate Donovan, Rory Cochrane and Taylor Schilling. Now we've got an official synopsis for the film, which adapts the true story of a CIA team that posed as a film crew in order to extract diplomats from Tehran in 1979. But perhaps of more interest to some who already know the story is the confirmation of cast additions that include the great Michael Parks (above), as well as Clea Duvall and Richard Kind. I can't really do better than the press release, which goes like this: Based on true events, "Argo" chronicles the life-or-death covert operation to rescue six Americans, which unfolded behind the...

Ben Affleck has begun commanding a dangerous mission deep into the heart of an extremely hostile enemy. Luckily, he'll get to boss the bad guys around, too.
Principal photography on the star's third directorial effort, "Argo," began on Thursday, with Warner Bros. sending out a press release detailing both the star-studded behind-the-scenes team (see: Clooney, George, for example) and the first official synopsis of the based-on-a-true-story film.
In a quick summary of the synopsis, the film is about six Us hostages that have escaped the grasp of their Iranian hostage takers during the famous 1979 crisis. They make their way to the home of a Canadian ambassador, but require an extreme plan to make it out of the country. Enter a preposterous, movie production scheme and some guts of steel, and you have one of the wildest stories in recent covert history (or, so we know).

With production beginning today on Ben Affleck‘s hostage thriller Argo, Warner Bros. lets us know of a few new players added to the cast. We’ve already got Affleck starring alongside Alan Arkin, Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, Kerry Bishé, Kyle Chandler, Rory Cochrane, Christopher Denham, Tate Donovan, Clea DuVall, Victor Garber, Zeljko Ivanek, Scoot McNairy and Taylor Schilling. Three names stood out for me as new additions though in the press release.
Richard Kind (A Serious Man), Chris Messina (Away We Go) and Michael Parks (who is in Kevin Smith‘s Red State, on VOD today), round out the rest of the major actors. There is no word on what specific roles they play, but these are three of my favorite character actors and it is nice to see Affleck make these additions. After mostly enjoying The Town and loving Gone Baby Gone, I’m looking forward to this one.

George Clooney and his Smoke House production shingle is decamping from Warners Bros. and setting up shop at Sony.
The shingle, which Clooney runs with Grant Heslov, is in final negotiations for a two-year first-look deal to develop and produce movie projects.
The move is a major one for Clooney, who has called Warners his home for almost a decade, first under the banner of Section Eight, the company started by him and Steven Soderbergh, then more recently with Grant Heslov under Smoke House. Smoke House signed its three year first-look deal in July 2006.
It was under Section Eight that Clooney made a name for himself as a producer, with not only the money -- making productions such as the "Ocean's" movies -- but with award-attracting fare such as "Michael Clayton," "Good Night, and Good Luck," "Syriana" and "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind."
Clooney, however, was less prolific under Smoke House.

- Let's face it: ladies love George Clooney. Maybe it's his Old Hollywood good looks or his devilish sense of humor. Whatever the cause, women (and men) are simply caught up in Clooney fever, and Warner Bros. knows it. That's why Clooney is set to star in The Tourist, an Anthony Peckham script adapted from an Olen Steinhauer novel. This international thriller, in the vein of John le Carre and Graham Greene, has Clooney playing a spy falsely accused of murder. To save himself, he must reveal a terrible conspiracy. In other words, ladies, Clooney will surely be wearing a suit and looking incredibly dapper. The film will be produced by Clooney, as well Smokehouse's Grant Heslov and Nina Wolarsky. No word yet on a director, as the script is only in development.Fear not, Clooney-philes: you can still have your urges satiated by Ethan and Joel Coen's Burn After Reading in September,

Warner Bros. has picked up the movie rights to The Tourist, an upcoming book by two-time Edgar Award nominee Olen Steinhauer, for George Clooney and Grant Heslov to produce via their Smoke House banner.
Picked up in early manuscript form, the story is described as being a contemporary international thriller in the vein of John Le Carre and Graham Greene and follows a spy who must risk everything to reveal a conspiracy after he's suspected of a murder he didn't commit.
Sources said the deal was worth in the $350,000 range.
Sarah Schechter will oversee for Warners. Schechter and Warners' New York-based book scout Maria Campbell brought the project to Smoke House vp feature development Nina Wolarsky, who in turn brought it to Clooney and Heslov.
Smoke House is in post on the football movie Leatherheads, which Clooney is directing and Universal is distributing. The company is prepping White Jazz, an adaptation of the James Ellroy novel to be directed by Joe Carnahan, and is developing an adaptation of Beau Willimon's upcoming play Farragut North.
