Elvis Presley inspired numerous songs and one of the most famous is Alannah Myles’ “Black Velvet.” The track has a sensual vibe that made it a huge hit and an instant classic. The original version of the song was very different. During an interview, Myles explained the secret ingredient that made “Black Velvet” climb up the charts.
Alannah Myles’ Elvis Presley tribute ‘Black Velvet’ was supposed to sound ‘clunky’
“Black Velvet” is a smokey, old-school song that blurs the line between rock and blues. It has some of the desert rock vibes of two other hits that came out around the same time: Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” and the Divinyls’ “I Touch Myself.” “Black Velvet” isn’t as risque as those songs — it’s chaste compared to “I Touch Myself!” However, “Black Velvet” still focuses on Elvis’ attractiveness, showing that the “Can’t Help Falling in Love” singer was a sex symbol even in death.

Nikki McKibbin, who reached the final three on the first season of American Idol, has died at age 42. Her fellow contestant and Season One runner-up Justin Guarini reported the news on Instagram. Her death was attributed to complications from an aneurysm.
McKibbin and Guarini lost to Kelly Clarkson in the first season. Her rendition of Alannah Myles’s song Black Velvet was her most memorable moment. She also performed songs by Alanis Morissette, Bonnie Tyler, Janis Joplin and Melissa Etheridge.
A native of Grand Prairie, Texas, McKibbin was remembered fondly by Guarini in his Instagram post.
“@realnikkimckibbin was a fiery, funny lady who could sing the Hell out of a rock song with the same kind of ease and command she lovingly used to cut you with her twangy Southern wit,” he wrote. “Even in our ’20s when we were on American Idol together, I could tell that she’d had a challenging life,...

The performances are done, the masks have come off, Ken Jeong gave his last wrong guess and when all the smoke had cleared, the Night Angel was named the winner of the third season of “The Masked Singer” and revealed to be Grammy-winning singer-songwriter and reality TV star Kandi Burruss. Burruss brought the season to a close on Wednesday night’s finale with her performance of “River Deep, Mountain High” by Tina Turner.

Kandi Burruss made history when she became the first woman to win “The Masked Singer” on Wednesday’s finale. The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter took down the Turtle (Jesse McCartney) and the Frog (Bow Wow) to win the Season 3 title and the coveted Golden Mask trophy. Panelists Jenny McCarthy and Robin Thicke both correctly guessed her identity, but Ken Jeong incorrectly named actress Tisha Campbell as the Night Angel while Nicole Scherzinger thought it was “Empire” star Taraji P. Henson. Watch the Night Angel’s performance of “River Deep, Mountain High” by Tina Turner above.
“It feels incredible!” exclaimed Burruss when host Nick Cannon asked her how it felt to become the first woman to win. “For a long time I really stopped singing by myself. You get negative feedback so it kind of messes with your head. I had really stopped and I really appreciate you guys for helping me build my confidence back up.

Admit it. The reason you love tuning into “The Masked Singer” is to see if you can figure out the names of the famous faces hidden inside the elaborate costumes. Of the 18 contestants who started out on season 3 of the show, 15 have been eliminated and had to remove their masks. Of the remaining three the Night Angel is the only woman still in the hunt for the Golden Mask. She faces off off against the Frog and Turtle on the May 20 finale.

Another week means another power ranking of who’s ahead to take home the Golden Mask on the third season of Fox’s hit competition program, “The Masked Singer.” We are now down to our Final Four! Do we have these in the correct order? What ranking would you put them in? Be sure to let us know in the comments section.

The Night Angel is one of the frontrunners to win season 3 of “The Masked Singer.” She, along with the remaining four contestants, perform again on the May 6 quarterfinal. The Night Angel is coming off her heavenly cover of “Black Velvet” by Alannah Myles last week that had the four judges roaring their approval.
The Night Angel has never been at risk of elimination. That isn’t surprising given her powerhouse performances starting with “You Give Love a Bad Name” by Bon Jovi, followed by “Million Reasons” by Lady Gaga; “Shout!” by the Isley Brothers; “Rise Up” by Andra Day; and “Man! Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 3, episode 14 of “The Masked Singer,” which aired April 29 on Fox.
Hunter Hayes is no longer “Wanted” on “The Masked Singer.” The country singer was the latest star to be unmasked on the hit Fox reality competition series, having been disguised as the Astronaut.
For his final performance, Hayes performed “Story of My Life” by One Direction on Wednesday night’s episode.
Hayes told Variety that he took the “Masked Singer” gig because, coincidentally, his next album — the second in his “Wild Blue” trilogy — will focus on themes of “the unknown and embracing the unknown.”
“It was a great chance for me to step out of my comfort zone and try new things in a safe place — even though it airs on national TV,” Hayes said. “I think being behind a mask gave me confidence and gave me the chance to really push myself.

There've been complaints that last night's American Idol, themed around the hits and performances of past Idol winners, was old-fashioned and schmaltzy. Hey, morons: That's why I watchAmerican Idol. I want ancient, Wayne Newton-y performances from Mormon teenagers in pain. I want the new Rosemary Clooney to woo me in a collared denim dress that her great-grandmother weaved. I want singers who pick songs by Kenny Rogers or Alannah Myles to feel "naughty." Bring me the home-schooled!
I loved last night's episode, even when truly awful songs like Ruben Studdard's "Flying Without Wings" threatened to curbstomp us with hopelessness. For me, ranking the top 10 was a cinch -- though apparently I disagree with most of you about how interesting Angela Miller is. Guys, her emotions range from "happy" to "happy, but quiet sometimes." Come on.

Elvis Presley's birthday was last weekend, and had the legendary rock and roller not tragically passed away back in 1977, he would have turned 76 years old on Saturday (January 8th). Presley's influence and importance still looms large, as traces of his music can be found on modern rock, country, pop and even hip-hop.
But it isn't just about the music. Sure, Presley is responsible for some incredible songs that represent the cornerstones of rock music (including gems like "Jailhouse Rock," "Blue Suede Shoes," "Hound Dog," "Heartbreak Hotel" and countless others), but his draw is also about style, attitude and mystique. He left behind a legacy of envelope-pushing fashion, sexual politics and the kind of swagger that many artists have attempted to replicate but few have really gotten right.
So it's not entirely surprising that on this day in 2005, a report showed that Elvis Presley has had more songs written about...

American Idol will be crowning its winner by the end of the day, and based off last night's performances it looks to be one of the most unpredictable bouts yet.
With Lee DewYze gaining momentum in the past couple of weeks, Crystal Bowersox found herself relying on her glory days to keep her ahead. It seemed almost inevitable that Lee would ride the wave all the way to the finish line, however Crystal came out swinging in the final hour, keeping things exciting to the end.
Round 1 - Previous Song Reprise
Crystal's rise started after Lee's snoozy performance of "The Boxer". Perhaps its because its the third time we've seen him perform this Simon and Garfunkel classic on the show, but it came off very uninspired and unemotional - two things you do not want accredited to you on the final performance night. It took several months, but "American Idol" finally turned in a consistently excellent episode during the penultimate night of the ninth season. Both Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze turned in stellar performances of each of their three songs, though Bowersox may have had the slight edge in the performance department that could be enough to put her over the top. But just like this weekend's Ufc fight between Rashad Evans and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, the showdown between Bowersox and DeWyze is a total dead heat. If Vegas set proper odds, it would totally be a pick'em situation.
Though Bowersox's songs were more consistently polished and excellent (especially her reprisal of "Me and Bobby McGee" and her take on Alannah Myles' chart-topping hit "Black Velvet"), the biggest moment of the night belonged to DeWyze, who turned in a spotty but beautiful rendition of U2's "Beautiful Day." We hate to simply quote Simon Cowell, but his reaction to Crystal Bowersox's take on "Up to the Mountain" last night says it all:
"I thought that was, by far, the best performance and the song of the night. That was outstanding."
It really was. While we fear viewers will reward Lee for covering a more contemporary hit, his hoarse singing voice simply didn't come across well on U2's "Beautiful Day." Crystal, however, nailed a lesser-known Patty Griffin single and is a deserving season nine champion.
Bowersox also left her comfort zone for Alannah Myles' "Black Velvet." Not only did she put her guitar down, she wore a dress! That should almost be enough to garner her the title by itself.
Seriously, though, Crystal has been the most consistent performer all season long. Can you remember any legitimate off weeks from her? Granted, some may see her attitude as condscending,...
"I thought that was, by far, the best performance and the song of the night. That was outstanding."

‘Idol’ Behind-The-Scenes: Mama Sox, You Were Flawless Last Night & You Are The Next ‘American Idol’!

Crystal Bowersox went out onto the Idol stage during final performance week with one mission – to win – and she deserves it!
I may not have been completely fair to Lee DeWyze all season, but right now I feel awful for him. His competitor, Crystal Bowersox, brought so much fire, so much power, so much Emotion to her American Idol performances May 25 that there is simply no way he can measure up – and I’m retracting my former opinion!
Sure, the 24-year-old Illinois native performance of U2’s “Beautiful Day” was good, but for me, it wasn’t outstanding. Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Boxer” was too tepid for finale night, and R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts” didn’t really get going until it was almost over.
But Crystal. The 24-year-old mom morphed from a hippy to a sexpot on Alannah Myles’ “Black Velvet...

The final performance of "American Idol" season 9 was divided into three rounds, the contestant's choice, Simon Fuller's pick and the coronation song. Lee DeWyze was rather overshadowed by Crystal Bowersox this time because of his own song choice as well as the winner's single. This year, unlike in previous seasons, the finalists get to cover a song instead of singing a new single.
In the first round, Lee sang Simon & Garfunkel's "The Box" which he sung during the inspirational week. Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi agreed that it was a great way to start the show but it was not phenomenal. Meanwhile, Simon Cowell described it, "That was a kiss on the cheek when I want a kiss on the lips." He added, "Not from you!"

There are certain things we’ve come to expect from an American Idol performance-night finale: Copious boxing metaphors from the judges. Misty eyes and beaming smiles from the contestants’ parents. And “coronation songs” that would make even the kindliest grandma want to spit cynical bile into a bucket. Tonight’s season 9 installation, however, only delivered on two of those counts, and I can’t say I’m upset about it. [Spoilers ahead, west-coast friends! Don't say you weren't warned!]
Nope, there were no “No Boundaries”-style clunkers in the mix tonight. Instead, the show’s producers had Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox respectively tackle tunes by U2 and Patty Griffin...

After 43 episodes (and 54 hours you'll never ever get back), the ninth season of "American Idol" is finally down to just two. And I'm live-blogging every last second of it. (Although, not literally every second because that would be quite cumbersome. And boring.)
Will it be Crystal Bowersox, a dread-sportin' diabetes-havin' mother who's doing it all for her adorable baby (who I insist on calling Jack Bowersox)? Or will it be Lee DeWyze, a paint salesman from Mt. Pleasant, Illinois who was kicked out of school for behavior problems and who now loves wearing gray jackets and crying in front of large groups of people?
For a season that has been short on the drama, this week's finale is a bit of a nailbiter. While Crystal was the early stand-out who maintained her lead for most of the season, lately she's been stumbling with poor song choices. Lee always had the...

momlogic's Vivian: Last night's "American Idol" was a smackdown of the fittest! Lee DeWyze and Crystal "MamaSox" Bowersox went head-to-head on the very last Simon Cowell-sanctioned sing-off. And it seems that unless there's an upset tonight, a clear winner lunged for the crown and stole the show. Read on and find out who!
The two remaining "Idol" hopefuls had to perform three songs: their personal fave of the season; producer Simon Fuller's choice; and the song they'd release if they won (surprisingly, both were covers). If you ask me, the choice should've been Cowell's (as a nod of respect to his imminent departure), but whatevs.
Anywhoodle, Lee "Paint Store" DeWyze had to go first, because Crystal had won the ring toss and chose to go second. Something was up with the poor guy, because he seemed deflated throughout the evening -- almost like his synapses weren't that into firing.

While both got positive comments, Crystal appeared to outshine Lee.

After more than 40 shows, hundreds of contenders, almost as many broken hearts and one of the tamest set of finalists in the show's history, "American Idol" season nine came down to a pair of 24-year-olds, each vying to be the first Midwesterner to hold the crown.
Two days after the buzzed-about "Lost" finale, the second meanest man on TV this side of John "Smokey" Locke — departing original judge and the heart of the panel, Simon Cowell — went out not with his usual snarling put-downs, but with mostly kind remarks as Crystal Bowersox re-asserted her season-long status as the woman to beat with a pair of powerful performances that might have beaten back the late-season surge from rocker Lee DeWyze.

It’s karaoke at its finest, this. The vast majority of these 40 songs are guaranteed to get people up and singing, and what we have here is a collection of party favourites. The only downside to this game is that it doesn’t come bundled with a microphone – you’ll need to buy it separately – but as far as the choice of songs goes, you can’t really go wrong if you are looking to get your mates all singing together. The track listing is as follows... · What's Up - 4 Non Blondes · Black Velvet - Alannah Myles · Rehab - Amy Winehouse · Doctor Jones - Aqua · Love Shack - The B-52's · Let's Get It Started - Black Eyed Peas · Word Up - Cameo · Tubthumping - Chumbawamba · Rhythm Of The Night - DeBarge · Groove Is In The Heart - Deee-Lite · I Touch Myself - Divinyls · American Pie - Don McLean · Son...

TORONTO -- Veteran Canadian music talent manager Bernie Finkelstein said Tuesday that he will step back from day-to-day control of True North Records, a label he formed in 1969.
The shift into the corporate slow lane follows the sale of an undisclosed "strategic investment" in True North by Finkelstein to rival record label Linus Entertainment.
Finkelstein said he will remain with True North as chairman and consultant, but management of the company will shift to Linus Entertainment CEO Geoff Kulawick.
"It's been a long, interesting and fulfilling road starting and building True North these past 38 years, but all things must change," Finkelstein said.
The talent roster at True North includes Bruce Cockburn, Murray McLauchlan, Blackie & the Rodeo Kings and Rough Trade.
Both True North and Linus -- whose talent roster includes Gordon Lightfoot, Ron Sexsmith, Alannah Myles and Ashley MacIsaac -- are distributed in Canada by Universal Music.
Finkelstein, 62, cut his teeth in the Canadian music industry as manager of Toronto rock groups the Paupers and Kensington Market during the late 1960s.
