- Finished second in the 1968 Kentucky Derby aboard Forward Pass. First place finisher Dancer's Image was later disqualified and placed last after a positive drug test, and Forward Pass was declared the winner. Valenzuela rode Forward Pass to victory in the Preakness Stakes, but finished second to Stage Door Johnny in the Belmont Stakes.
- Won the 1958 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes aboard Tim Tam. Finished second to Cavan in the Belmont Stakes.
- Inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 2008.
