Rose Byrne is detailing what it was like getting Dolly Parton’s blessing for Seriously Red and transforming into her Elvis Presley.
In an interview with Collider, published online Saturday, the Insidious star said she drove from Atlanta to Chattanooga, Tennessee to meet with the singer’s longtime manager, Danny Nozell, because “we knew without Dolly there was just no way we could do it [the film].”
“We had to try to get this script in [to] her, and to get her blessing, and to see if she could help us get the music,” she said. “If we didn’t have the music, it would’ve been very different. I don’t know what the movie would’ve become, but it certainly wouldn’t have been a Dolly Parton impersonator.”
Byrne said Nozell, who was a champion of the film, got it to Parton. “Within a few weeks, she said, ‘Yeah, I really love it.

Diverse festival notables from Hannah Ha Ha to The Blue Caftan join a spattering of specialty horror titles led by Consecration, and the U.S. theatrical debut of Gaspar Noé’s controversial Irréversible: Straight Cut.
The last is presented by Altered Innocence, whose owner Frank Jaffe spoke with Deadline about why he wanted to give Noe’s unusual 2019 director’s cut — of the Argentinian/French director’s disturbing 2002 film Irreversible — a release Stateside. “It’s a film that needs to be seen. Or made available,” he said. StudioCanal approached him twice. “They said, ‘No one is brave enough to take on this film. Will you?’” And “there is an audience for it…Tickets are selling.”
Jaffe said he first watched Irreversible, or tried to, via Netflix mail order DVD when he was 14. “My dad made me turn it off halfway through.”

A spiritual kissing cousin of such compellingly campy ’90s Aussie-produced extravaganzas as “Strictly Ballroom” and “Muriel’s Wedding,” director Gracie Otto’s “Seriously Red” disarms and delights as a sensationally spirited concoction that neatly balances unfettered outrageousness and unabashed sentimentality. The beating heart of the entire enterprise is Krew Boylan. As screenwriter, she has created a terrific role for herself. As star, she proves absolutely fearless while illuminating every aspect of a sometimes exhilarating, sometimes exasperating, always endearing protagonist. She works a singularly impressive type of movie magic while simultaneously driving the movie over the top and anchoring the borderline-fantastical narrative in something resembling reality.
Boylan stars as Raylene Delaney, better known as Red, a socially awkward small-town New South Wales realtor with, as she herself admits, “an impulse control problem.” To put it mildly. A fanatically passionate fan of Dolly Parton, she decks herself out as her idol for a company gathering,...

Despite the best cameo efforts of Dannii Minogue, Krew Boylan’s passion project is too frantic and narcissistic to convince
This Australian movie is a colourful comedy of romance and finding yourself, and it’s clearly a personal project for its writer-star Krew Boylan. I sat down to it hoping for something like Muriel’s Wedding, the film that first introduced us to Toni Collette but unfortunately, there’s something a bit frantic and narcissistic about it: a film that doesn’t quite convince you to care enough about its characters or what they care about.
Red, played by Boylan, is a young woman who is employed in an estate agent’s office and pretty hopeless at the job because, in her goofy and adorable way, her real passion is Dolly Parton: imitating her, studying her and obsessing over her. She’s also a bit self-conscious about being redheaded and flat-chested.

Seriously Red is an Australian comedy movie directed by Gracie Otto starring Krew Boylan.
A charming comedy in pastel tones in the tone of some Australian comedies that gets the most out of its material and dives in with malicious intent in the world of imitators of celebrities.
Funny, idiotic, stupid… Know we like it, right?
About the Movie Seriously Red (2022)
This movie is all about what it wants to evoke and if you are looking for elegance or suaveness, run away! "This is where I belong. This is what I'm supposed to be doing!" Lionsgate has unveiled an official trailer for a comedy titled Seriously Red, from director Gracie Otto. The film is written by and stars Krew Boylan as Red, whose dream is to be the world's greatest Dolly Parton impersonator. After she loses her job, she decides to jump into the impersonation world and see if she can make it work. She befriends an amorous Elvis impersonator, played by Rose Byrne, and takes to the stage - only to end up learning true happiness comes when you're being the best version of yourself. The cast also includes Bobby Cannavale (Wilson), Daniel Webber (Kenny), Celeste Barber (Teeth), and Thomas Campell (Francis). This looks like it'll be entertaining and upbeat, not too cheesy, with some kooky humor & good heart that gives it a nice boost. ›››

The production is in partnership with production and finance firm Storyd.
The story narrates a love story between two young women in 1836 Prussia. On the verge of womanhood, the two outsiders find a kindred spirit in the other. Dolly Parton was everywhere at SXSW, from her documentary Still Working 9-5 to her collaboration with Blockchain Creative Labs which involved both a well-received performance at Austin City Limits and Dollyverse NFTs. There’s a reason she’s still an icon, and Gracie Otto’s hilarious Seriously Red has decades of witticisms and quotes to draw upon. Written and starring Krew Boylan as Raylene “Red” Delancy (a Dolly impersonator with naturally smaller breasts and red hair) and framed by Dolly quotes—including “find out who you are and do it on purpose” and “it costs a lot of money to look cheap”—it’s one of those films where a thirty-something comes of age from sheer will and stubbornness.

‘Seriously Red’ Review: Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale & More Channel The Spirit of Dolly Parton [SXSW]
Taking inspiration from the Dolly Parton quote, “Find out who you are and do it on purpose,” the Australian comedy “Seriously Red” features the most Dolly Parton paraphernalia you’ll ever see outside of Dollywood itself. Directed by Gracie Otto (“Under The Volcano”) and written by its star Krew Boylan, the film is as bold, brash, and heartfelt as the icon herself, although not entirely as original as it could be.

“We need more Dollys in the world,” is the message of this raucous but hugely enjoyable comedy, which, at the same time, reminds us that there is—and can only be—one Dolly Parton. The 76-year-old country legend is having quite a moment at SXSW this year, arriving at the festival with a concert to promote her new album (and novel) Run, Rose, Run and her online Nft project Dollyverse, while riding a wave of public goodwill after her philanthropic support of the Covid vaccine with a $1 million donation.

Dolly Parton is a great American, but she’s big in Australia, too, and she means the world to the heroine of “Seriously Red,” a deceptively modest vehicle for Krew Boylan, who plays the lead here and also wrote the script.
What starts out as a crowd-pleaser about an awkward woman who becomes a Dolly impersonator gradually reveals itself as a fairly serious examination of how confidence can be gained through such impersonation, but only up to a point.
Boylan and her director Gracie Otto (the 2021 documentary “Under the Volcano”) truly love Parton, and “Seriously Red” is studded with Dolly quotes, both in dialogue form and in on-screen title cards. “Storms make trees take deeper roots,” quotes Boylan’s Red, a good-hearted but rather lost woman who is living in her mother’s garage and floundering at her current job in finance. Jobs never seem to last long for Red,...

Rose Byrne’s array of credits includes a wide range of projects, from comedies such as “Neighbours” and “Bridesmaids” to historical dramas including “Mrs. America” and superhero pics “X-Men: First Class,” horror films and gems “Juliet, Naked.” Now, her production company Dollhouse Pictures has “Seriously Red,” being sold by Arclight Films at the EFM. Red trades her job in real estate to take up a new career as a Dolly Parton impersonator, and falls into a new world of tribute artists, including a romance with a Kenny Rogers impersonator.
The film will feature the Parton discography as well as a soundtrack of iconic musical artists and re-recordings.
More detail on the cast is expected shortly.
Seriously Red is the first feature under the Dollhouse Pictures banner, a collective founded by Byrne, Otto, Boylan, Shannon Murphy and Jessica Carrera. It has been on the slate since its launch in 2015. At one stage, Kate Woods was attached to direct.

Actress Rose Byrne ("Bridesmaids"), posing for London's "Evening Standard", continues producing new film projects with "The Dollhouse", a collective of fellow Australians, including writers Gracie Otto, Krew Boylan and director Shannon Murphy:
"The only films that the studios are making are about robots and cars," said Bryrne. "It's all 'The Fate of the Furious'. And the film industry is a broken system — most films fail. You can have a film packed with every A-lister under the sun, and it can still not work.
"But I think being funny comes with an authority that people find hard to give women in general. The power to make a joke, to have the punchline — it can be very competitive and quite a masculine energy. I think in a lot of mainstream Us comedies women are always the nagging one, the downer. Those films are a bit misogynistic.

"I am a strong, empowered monster." Don't miss this funky, fantastic short film Martha the Monster, from writer / director Christopher Weekes. In an upside-down reality where humans live with monsters, Martha, a 20-something furry, must learn to hold her own in a modern metropolitan city. It features full-size puppet characters, similar to those in Where the Wild Things Are. "I was massively inspired by the work of Spike Jonze, and was really drawn to the idea of a fun, colourful way of exploring what it’s like to blend in within a big city when you’re so obviously built to stand out," Weekes explains. "Blending a mix of facial capture with traditional puppet techniques... a little of the old, a little of the new." This stars Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale, Kailah Cabanas, Nicholas Brown, and Krew Boylan. Another must watch short. Thanks to Short of the Week for the tip on this one.

Barry Otto (Photo credit: Jake Terrey).
When Gracie Otto told her friend Nick Broomfield that Hong Kong businessman, philanthropist and socialite David Tang had rejected her proposal to be profiled in a feature documentary, the filmmaker gave her some sage advice.
Instead of trying to make a film about Tang, who founded the Shanghai Tang fashion chain, Bloomfield suggested she look at a subject much closer to home: her father Barry Otto.
The venerable stage, film and TV actor agreed, so his daughter and producer Nicole O’Donohue, her collaborator on The Last Impresario, embarked on the doc entitled Otto on Otto.
“It’s a very personal film and a hard film to make,” says Gracie, who lived with her parents until she was 26 and later moved to the Us.

In November 2017, comedian and filmmaker Louis C.K. was accused of harassment by five women in a report from The New York Times. Some of the allegations claimed C.K. masturbated in front of female comics, and he verified that the “stories are true” in a personal statement. The allegations arrived in the early weeks of #MeToo, and the report wasn’t just damning to C.K.’s career, but also to his film “I Love You, Daddy,” which partially revolves around the relationship between Chloë Grace Moretz, playing the 17-year-old daughter of C.K.’s character, and a 68-year-old filmmaker played by John Malkovich.
The film was immediately yanked from the release calendar in the wake of the allegations, but people are still talking about its potential future, even if some of its own stars aren’t excited about the possibility that it could be released.

Writers: Josh Reed and Nigel Christensen.
Waterborne illnesses around the world kill millions. If you are unlucky enough to drink contaminated water, then your chances of catching a disease like cholera, dysentery, and typhoid fever are pretty good. In Josh Reed's first feature, the water turns people into blood-thirsty killers. Primal released in January of 2011 on DVD and this is an independent horror film from Australia. There are no crazed psychopaths in this film - like Wolf Creek, but there is an ancient terror residing in an ancient cave. That terror creates the tension and the moral dilemmas that hinders six friends like a bad case of stomach cramps.
This is a backwoods thriller, where Mel (Krew Boylan), Chad (Lyndsay Farris), Kris (Rebekah Foord), Warren (Damien Freeleagus), Dace (Wil Traval), and Anja (Zoe Tuckwell-Smith) set out on a trek to research some pictographs. These ancient drawings foretell doom and disease.

So the day has come for you folks to take home Costas Mandylor in the final chapter of the phenomenon that is Saw! Well, at least until the inevitable reboot. Even cooler...if the jolly red-suited fatman brought you a 3D television last month, you can watch this puppy in its gory 3D glory, too.
Another franchise that is buzzing this week is the video game sequel, Dead Space 2. In addition to the game itself, you can also bring home the collector's edition, the album soundtrack, a hardcover game guide, and an animated DVD movie. That should keep you busy for a while.
Oh yeah, there are a couple of other interesting titles with some familiar faces from "True Blood", "Angel", "Buffy", and even "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman".

Grimmupnorth 2010 is coming to Manchester for a second time this Halloween! Readers may remember last year’s coverage from the first Grimmfest last October ‘09. Well, we’re going back for more this year too. Festival director Simeon Halligan and his crew have spent all year finding some amazing new titles to screen at Manchester’s biggest horror film festival, including Evil: In The Time Of Heroes, which I missed at Eiff so am well up for seeing. There’s also the inventively named Canadian shocker, Dead Hooker In A Trunk, the Japanese genre mash-up Alien Vs Ninja, Thai thriller Slice, Zombie mock-u-mentary Reel Zombies and a horror doc featuring all kinds of industry insiders, The Splat Pack. There’s also a ton of activities and seminars for festival goers to participate in too. Personally I’m looking forward to the special screening for my favourite Argento film, Deep Red.

Director: Josh Reed Writer: Nigel Christensen, Josh Reed Starring: Krew Boylan, Zoe Tuckwell-Smith, Wil Traval, Lindsay Farriss, Rebekah Ford, Damien Freeleagus Primal begins as we travel back 12000 years to witness an Aboriginal man who is painting a warning next to the mouth of a cave, just as he is slaughtered by the very subject of his work. Fast-forward to present day as we follow six friends, Dace (Wil Traval) the anthropology student, Kris (Rebekah Ford) the assistant, Mel (Krew Boylan) the blonde party girl, Chad (Lindsay Ferris) Mel's introverted jealous boyfriend, Warren (Damien Freeleagus) the "funny guy", and Anya (Zoe Tuckwell-Smith) the claustrophobic chick with man issues, who have set out into the remote reaches of the wild Australian outback on a journey to study an ancient aboriginal rock painting thousands of year old. The camp out excitement switches gears when Mel becomes ill after skinny dipping in a stagnant pond filled with leaches.

It's nice to witness the rebirth of a genre. But as horror fans know better than anybody, births can be pretty damn bloody. Last night I caught the retro Ozzie exploitation import Primal at Fantastic Fest. On hand were stars Krew Boylan and Wil Traval (who play campers who encounter an ancient evil that turns them into rabid cannibals) and director Josh Reed (pictured above from left to right). As Reed explained, Primal is their attempt to bring back the glory days of Ozploitation, the days that produced gems like the Mad Max films. Read what the Primal posse had to say after the jump. "The Australian film industry became ruled by the iron fist of the government," said Reed of his...

Despite a small budget, the new horror film Primal (out of Australia) is a straight-up, old-school horror movie dealing with a tainted waterhole (billabong to those fluent in Australian) and a giant slug monster…yes, you heard right, slug monster. Writer/director Josh Reed and stars Krew Boylan and Wil Traval sat down to discuss the project. Relaxing outside of the famed Highball bar in Austin, the Aussies seemed at ease and ready to talk some shop. The brain child of Reed, this horror film is based in the outback. A dense, green environment where a few young campers are out for an...

Razor-toothed rabbit? Check. Skinny dipping with leeches at night after seeing razor-toothed rabbit attack your friends? Check. Slowly realizing you might not survive the night because your friends are turning into monsters? Check.
It's no insult to call writer/director Josh Reed's Primal a straightforward exploitation horror thriller. Set in the woods somewhere in Australia, the film doesn't spend much time soaking in the beauties of the rural landscape.
Neither do the characters; it's not that important to them, because they're heading off in support of their friend Dace (Wil Traval), who's seeking a doctorate in primal art (or something). He's intent on studying primal paintings; the prologue has already shown us that the paintings (on the outside of a cave) are linked with bloodshed and death, so we have a pretty good idea that something bad is going to happen.
The six friends are paired off neatly: the...
