New Regency is postponing the theatrical release of Jeff Nichols’ “The Bikeriders” as the actors’ strike continues and promotion from talent in the film is prohibited.
The film stars a bevy of top-tier talent including Tom Hardy, Nichols alum Michael Shannon, Jodie Comer, Austin Butler, Norman Reedus and Body Holbrook.
Disney and 20th Century had planned to release the film Dec. 1, but it has been removed from the schedule for the time being, per a release from Disney. Despite this setback, the movie, which debuted at the Telluride Film Festival during Labor Day weekend this year, is still aiming to qualify for 2023 Oscar season, says The Hollywood Reporter, which first broke the news.
Based on Danny Lyon’s 1967 book of the same name, the film is described as a period drama set in the 1960s. It chronicles the ascent of a fictional motorcycle club from the Midwest and their transformation over a decade,...

If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pictures, including the 2021 winner “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Costume Design predictions.)
By the way, none of those films even competed for Best Picture. Indeed, only 20 of the most recent 73 Best Picture champs also won this award. Some films merely offer you a clockwork plot. Others, like Jeff Nichols’ smokin’ cool “The Bikeriders,” whisk you away with a roar of mood and atmosphere.
That’s no surprise coming from the versatile director of “Mud,” “Loving” and “Midnight Special,” all seemingly different (but equally wondrous) films with one common denominator: a precise, wistful sense of place and tone. As soon as we spot Austin Butler on a bar stool sporting a badass Vandals Chicago jacket on his back, that exacting disposition is evident here, too. With appealingly greased and molded hair, Butler looks like he just stepped away from the “Elvis” set for a swift cigarette break, wearing the invincible aura of a movie star like it’s his second skin. Vandals is the name of the motorbike clique Butler’s terse Benny is a part of. And to get him to take that jacket off—like a...

Jeff Nichols’ filmography is still young, and still showing no signs of settling in to a stylistic signature — or rut. Through such distinctive features as Take Shelter, Loving, Midnight Special and Mud, the writer-helmer has, though, established a certain directorial integrity. Valuing mood and gesture over plot or formula, his stories are propelled by an openhearted but unsentimental tenderness toward his characters, and invigorated by electrifying grace notes.
With his latest offering, the gloves, at first, seem to be off. The Bikeriders is set within a testosterone-fueled counterculture where brute stupidity frequently prevails, and many viewers will find its violence and code-of-honor brotherhood distancing, or at least familiar movie territory. But what resonates beyond the brawls and blood is a profound affection for the people onscreen — those grace notes provided by a fine cast, with Jodie Comer and Tom Hardy stirring undercurrents that are particularly affecting precisely because they’re never explicitly examined or explained.

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” got a big boost in its Oscar bid for Best Costume Design with a win on April 13 at the Costume Designers Guild Awards. It prevailed in the period design race over two of its Oscar rivals — “Emma” and “Mank” — plus “Judas and the Black Messiah” and “One Night in Miami.”
Its closest Oscar competition could be “Mulan,” which won the fantasy/sci-fi prize at the CDG Awards on Tuesday; the fifth Oscar nominee, “Pinocchio,” was not in contention here. The other CDG winner was the contemporary film “Promising Young Woman.
In its 22-year history, the CDG has previewed only 10 of the Oscar winners for Best Costume Design; seven of these have been period pictures and three have been sci-fi or fantasy flicks. Of the last four Costume Designers Guild Awards winners only one has gone on to repeat at the Academy Awards: “Black Panther” in 2019.

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Promising Young Woman” were among the film winners at the 23rd annual Costume Designers Guild Awards Tuesday night. TV winners included “The Queen’s Gambit” (Netflix) and the filmed version of “Hamilton” (Disney+).
Broadcast online, the awards celebrated the best in film, TV, and short-form costume design in eight categories that spanned fantasy, contemporary, and period works. Streamed live on Twitter, the virtual ceremony was hosted by Lana Condor (“To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before”).
Oscar frontrunner Ann Roth’s work on “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” bested other period film nominees at the CDG Awards, heading toward a likely Oscar win, beating “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “One Night in Miami,” and two other Oscar nominees, “Emma,” and “Mank.”

Nominees for the 23rd annual Costume Designer Guild Awards (to be livestreamed April 13 on Twitter @CostumeAwards at 5:30 pm Pt / 8:30 pm Et) include Oscar frontrunner “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and other period contenders “Emma,” “Mank,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” and “One Night in Miami.”
Contemporary nods went to “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar,” “Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn),” “Da 5 Bloods,” “Promising Young Woman,” and “The Prom.” And the sci-fi/fantasy nominees included “Dolittle,” “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey,” “Mulan,” “Pinocchio,” and “Wonder Woman 1984.”
Netflix was the big winner with five nominations, followed by Warner Bros. and Universal/Focus Features with three. Disney scored with “Mulan,” Amazon with “One Night in Miami,” Lionsgate with “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar,” and Roadside Attractions with “Pinocchio.”
And it’s a great display of diversity with five Black-themed films.

Four of our five predicted nominees for Best Costume Design at the Oscars reaped bids on March 4 for the Costume Designers Guild Awards. “Emma,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Mank” contend here in the period picture category against “Judas and the Black Messiah” and “One Night in Miami.” Another likely Oscar contender, “Mulan,” vies here in the sci-fi/fantasy race against “Dolittle,” “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey,” “Pinocchio” and “Wonder Woman 1984.”
Our fifth Oscar nominee, “News of the World,” can take heart that the guild often overlook films that go on to contend at the Academy Awards. Indeed last year’s Oscar winner for Best Costume Design, “Little Women,” was snubbed by the CDG as were two of the other nominees, “The Irishman” and “Joker.” The guild honored one of the other academy nominees, “Jojo Rabbit.”

Hark, children, upon the breeze comes a glorious sound. Nay, ’tis not the sweet melody of birdsong, but instead the pained cries of a thousand apoplectic Twitter-gammon lurching from theatres with their testicles firmly nestled in their abdomen.
There are few people in this world I’d give up my breakfast for but having delightedly squealed my way through Birds of Prey at a suburban matinée last Friday, costume designer Erin Benach is now one of them. What she, and the female-centric hub of talent behind BoP have achieved, is something as necessary as it is refreshing and endearing: zero fucks, character driven wardrobes that work for the women inhabiting them. The result is a robustly realised first outing into DC’s latest extended universe; a universe where women (avert your eyes if you’re of a sensitive disposition) look like they’ve actually dressed themselves! A myriad of...

A nod to the original DC comics and an eye toward a fresh take on the charming and crazy Harley Quinn and her fellow feminist vigilantes sets the tone for costume designer Erin Benach's work on Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).
"This was more nerve-wracking than other films I have worked on, and I didn't come at it from a comic-superhero angle but more from a character-building angle," says the designer who incorporated glamour, comfort and style on steroids for the high-voltage fashions in the heightened world of Gotham. A thoughtful meditation on liberation, egg sandwiches and glitter bombs, “Birds of Prey” (subtitled “And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn”) is a giddy treat of an R-rated comic-book movie, borrowing elements from inspirations as disparate as “9 to 5,” Bugs Bunny and Modesty Blaise to create an adventure that tweaks its genre familiarity with delightful bursts of anarchy and wit.
A sort-of sequel that soars far above “Suicide Squad,” this fresh follow-up wisely puts the spotlight on Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) as she carves out (sometimes literally) a new life for herself in the aftermath of her breakup with the Joker. In discovering the power she’s always had to stand on her own two feet, and in freeing herself from trying to please the dysfunctional man in her life, she even manages to make some new female friends along the way.

We got a closer look at the Birds of Prey costumes at New York Comic Con.
Birds Of Prey might not be out until February, but try telling that to excited fans. Hot on the heels of the celebrated new trailer, DC showed off the full costumes of the girl gang this week at New York Comic Con. Audiences were able to catch a glimpse of some of these looks in the trailer, but Den of Geek's Bevin took a deeper dive into costumer Erin Benach's designs.
The look for Mary Elizabeth Winstead's Huntress is by far the most tactical, which makes sense for Helena Bertinelli, the mafioso heiress-turned-vigilante. Her fingerless sap gloves and chain aren't just for decoration - they're weapons. As someone who's been scrapping since she was born, Helena doesn't come to play. It's unclear which threads of rape, murder, and...

Robbie has described the film as a girl gang movie, that allows Harley to be around her friends, as she is a people person who thrives off of having people around her. Winstead has said the film has a 90’s feel to it, in the best way. The cast is great, and it sounds like there will be some awesome action in the movie. Here’s the official synopsis:

Winstead has said the film has a 90’s feel to it, in the best way. The cast is great, and it sounds like there will be some awesome action in the movie. Here’s the official synopsis:

In a recent on-set interview with Vogue, Margot Robbie laid out the official R rating for Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), and spoke about the different vibe viewers should get from this film. During the visit, the reporter, Irina Aleksander, got to accompany Robbie to a costume fitting, where she mentioned to Robbie that the costume of sports bra, orange track shorts and sequined blazer was less male fantasy, and more sporty spice.
That was when costume designer Erin Benach said, “That’s what happens when you have a female producer, director, writer.” And Robbie added, “Yeah, it’s definitely less male gaze–y.” So we are getting a film made by women, about women, for everyone to see. The women in this film will not be decorative or overly sexually objectified, and that’s refreshing. We can focus on the story and the action,...

Margot Robbie will follow up her big 2019 with an even bigger 2020 thanks to the release of “Birds of Prey.” The Warner Bros. tentpole finds the Oscar nominee reprising her “Suicide Squad” role of Harley Quinn opposite Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, and Ewan McGregor as Black Mask. The superhero film is powered by women, with Robbie serving as producer and “Dead Pigs” helmer Cathy Yan in the director’s chair, and that’s one reason Harley Quinn won’t be presented only as an object of desire.
“That’s what happens when you have a female producer, director, writer,” costume designer Erin Benach recently told Vogue about making some slight alterations to Harley Quinn’s “Suicide Squad” look in order to better empower the character.
“Yeah, it’s definitely less male gaze–y,” Robbie added.
Benach went straight into work on “Birds of Prey” following “A Star Is Born.

While “Bohemian Rhapsody” lost at the Costume Designer Awards on Tuesday, it still ended up winning the most precursor prizes of the eight Best Picture nominees at the Oscars. This biopic of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury won with four of the nine guilds at which it contended. It lost with the art directors, costume designers, makeup artists/hairstylists, producers and visual effects wizards.
Two of its Academy Awards rivals for the top award — “Black Panther” and “The Favourite” — did win over the costume designers. These victories in the fantasy and period film races respectively brought their overall hauls to three apiece. “Black Panther” had previously prevailed with the actors and art directors while “The Favourite” scored with the art directors and film editors. They are now tied with “Green Book,” which had wins with the actors, casting directors and producers.

The Oscar frontrunner for Best Costume Design, “The Favourite,” won a top honor at the Costume Designers Guild Awards on Tuesday. It picked up the period prize over two of its Oscar rivals — “Mary Poppins Returns” and “Mary Queen of Scots” — as well as “BlacKkKlansman” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
Another Oscar contender in that category, “Black Panther,” won the fantasy film race over “Aquaman,” “The Avengers: Infinity War,” “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” and “A Wrinkle in Time.”
And the contemporary costumes of “Crazy Rich Asians” prevailed over “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” “Ocean’s 8,” “A Star Is Born” and “Widows.”
The fifth Oscar nominee, “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” was snubbed by the guild which has a stellar track record at honoring the eventual Oscar winner. The winner of the period film Cdg prize tends to repeat at the Oscars. However, that has not been the case for the last two years running.

With the Writers Guild and Motion Picture Sound Editors awards on Sunday (February 17), we’ve now heard from 12 of the 13 guilds. The costume designers don’t weigh in till hours after Oscar voting ends on Tuesday, February 19.
The winners with the writers were “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” (adapted”) and “Eighth Grade” (original) while “A Quiet Place” took the top sound editing award. The Oscar frontrunner for Best Original Screenplay, “The Favourite,” was ineligible at the WGA Awards. Over on the sound side, two other Best Picture nominees, “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Roma,” picked up two and one prizes respectively.
“Bohemian Rhapsody” had also won on Saturday with the sound mixers at the Cinema Audio Society Awards. That one-two punch moves this biopic of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury into first on our guild awards scorecard with four wins following its success with the actors and film editors.

It took till the last weekend of guild awards season but “A Star is Born” finally picked up a prize at the Makeup and Hair Styling Awards on Saturday, February 16. This win for best contemporary makeup was particularly welcome as Bradley Cooper‘s remake of the Hollywood classic lost at the other guild awards of the evening. The Cinema Audio Society went with “Bohemian Rhapsody” for Best Sound Mixing.
This marked the third victory to date for the biopic of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury following its success with the actors and film editors. “Crazy Rich Asians” picked up its third prize as well, with a win for contemporary hairstyling. It had previously won over both the art and casting directors. Each is now tied with “Green Book,” which has wins with the actors, casting directors and producers.
Two more guilds — the sound editors and writers — will chime in on Sunday.

We’ re now more than two-thirds along the road to the Oscars with 9 of the 13 guilds having weighed in with their picks before academy voters begin casting their final ballots on Feb. 12. “Green Book” has won with the three of the eight groups heard from to date: actors, casting directors and producers.
After their success with the art directors, “Black Panther” and “The Favourite” are now tied with “Bohemian Rhapsody” at two wins apiece as detailed below. And “Roma” got on the scoreboard with that DGA win for multi-hyphenate Alfonso Cuaron, who lost the cinematography award on Feb. 9 to “Cold War” lenser Lukasz Zal.
Three more groups — makeup artists & hair stylists, sound editors and writers — announce their winners during the eight days of voting for the Academy Awards. And the costume designers hold their awards mere hours after Academy Awards balloting ends on Feb. 20.

We are now more than halfway along the road to the Oscars as the seventh of 13 guilds — the Visual Effects Society — handed out its precursor prizes on Feb. 5. Only one of the Best Picture nominees was in the running: “Bohemian Rhapsody” lost its bid for best supporting visual effects to “First Man.” That marked the first guild win for Damien Chazelle‘s biopic of Neil Armstrong.
The big winner with the Ves was “Avengers: Infinity War” which swept its four categories, including the guild equivalent of Best Picture – visual effects in a feature motion picture. Among its other wins was effects simulations. While it had contended for its depiction of Wakanda, the home of Black Panther, it won instead for bringing Titan to the screen. That wasn’t surprising given that the Ves had snubbed “Black Panther” across the board.

Six of the 13 guilds have now weighed in with their picks of the year. On Feb. 2, it was the turn of the directors (“Roma” helmer Alfonso Cuaron took that award) and the art directors.
Before final Oscar voting begins on Feb. 12, we will also hear from the visual effects wizards (Feb. 5) and the lensers (Feb. 9). With the Ace Eddie Awards on Feb. 1, we’ve now heard from 4 of the 13 guilds who give out prizes. “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which had already racked up a win with SAG for lead Rami Malek, won with the cutters on the drama side. That moves it into second place on our guild awards scorecard behind “Green Book” which has won over the actors, casting directors and producers to date. And “The Favourite” got on the board with its comedy/musical win at the Ace Eddies.
On Feb. 2, we’ll hear from the directors (“Roma” helmer Alfonso Cuaron is tipped to take that prize) and the art directors who hand out awards in three genres. We expect “The Favourite” to win the period prize, “Black Panther” to claim the fantasy award and “Crazy Rich Asians” to nab the contemporary honor.

Before nominations for the Oscars were announced on Jan. 22, we’d already heard from the producers and actors with their picks for the best of the year. On Thursday Jan. 31, the casting directors chimed in with their choices. This weekend, three more groups (art directors, directors, film editors) will hand out prizes. And two more — the lensers and visual effects wizards — hold their awards before final Oscar voting begins on Feb. 12.
Four more groups — makeup artists & hair stylists, sound mixers, sound editors and writers — weigh in during the eight days of voting for the Academy Awards. And the costume designers have their say hours after Oscar balloting ends on Feb. 20.
“A Star is Born,” which reaped eight Oscar nominations, is in the running for 12 of the 13 guild awards missing out only with Visual Effects Society. It has yet to win with any of the three groups heard from to date.

We just heard from the Motion Picture Sound Editors society with their nominees for the best of the year. These maestros of sound were the last of the 13 guilds and societies to weigh in with their choices following the actors, art directors, casting directors, cinematographers, costume designers, directors, film editors, makeup artists & hairstylists, producers, sound mixers, visual effects wizards and writers.
“A Star is Born” reaped two bids from the Mpse and ends this phase of awards season with nominations from 12 of the 13 precursor prizes (it missed out only for visual effects). Among the other leading Oscar contenders, “Bohemian Rhapsody” is now sitting in second place alone as it reaped two bids as well from the sound editors.

“A Star is Born” kept its perfect track record with the guild awards on January 10, as it numbered among the nominations announced for both the Costume Designers Guild (Cdg) and the Makeup and Hairstyling (Muahs) Awards.
Those nominations mean that his remake of the Hollywood classic is now 11 for 11 with the guild and society awards. It had already been cited by the actors, art directors, casting directors, cinematographers, directors, film editors, producers and writers as one of the best of the year in their respective fields. Not surprisingly, “A Star is Born” leads our predictions to win Best Picture at the Oscars.

Four of our five predicted nominees for Best Costume Design at the Oscars — “Black Panther,” “The Favourite,” “Mary Poppins Returns” and “Mary Queen of Scots” — reaped bids for the Costume Designers Guild kudos. While our fifth contender – “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald — was snubbed, fans of that film should take heart from the fact that these awards often overlook one of the Academy Awards nominees. However, the Cdg has a stellar track record at honoring the eventual Oscar winner.

“A Star Is Born” costume designer Erin Benach‘s focus was on creating “a character arc” for Ally (Lady Gaga), a down-on-her-luck waitress who becomes a singing sensation after she’s discovered by fading rock star Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper). Watch our exclusive video interview with Benach above.
Before she started work the veteran designer had to decide “where I wanted her to start, where I saw her at the pinnacle … and where I wanted her to end.” With that in mind, “I kept pinpointing” those ideas “in the storyline,” making sure to “hit them as far as her clothing went.”

“I would say the jumping-off point was we decided to place the camera onstage rather than ever seeing it through the audience’s perspective,” Libatique says. “We started the film onstage at Coachella. Lady Gaga doesn’t lip-sync. For her, every performance was 45 minutes of warmup and her exercise ritual. I didn’t want her to go through four or five takes. We had to be prepared.”
Karen Murphy
Production Designer
“I was interested in looking at the reality of the music industry,” says Murphy. “I suggested all along that we use real environments that people understand and know. We actually went to ‘Saturday Night Live.’” She chose the Greek Theatre for the performance of “Shallow.

Elaborate period costumes (see “Colette” and “The Favourite”) tend to rule the day with Best Costume Design. So do fantastical original creations like Ruth Carter’s colorful array of costumes for the new world of Wakanda in “Black Panther.” Both “A Star is Born” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” play with a wide range of flamboyant concert styles and behind-the-scenes outfits.

Minor Spoilers
For all the inevitable chrysalis transformation of singer Ally (Lady Gaga) during A Star is Born, the most subtle, yet real sartorial reflection of character belongs to her mentor and lover Jack (Cooper). Costumed by Erin Benach, Jack is the epitome of the casual rock star. Stage wear, day wear, evening wear, drinking wear, sleeping wear – it’s all the same. His simple clothes mask a mind so damaged it can only be subdued with the bottle.
Jack lives in t-shirts, untucked shirts (dark or a green graph-check), brown calf leather jacket, natural suede jacket and natural cotton twill jacket (cut like a denim jacket). Denim jeans, generally at the paler end of the spectrum, adorn his legs; black cowboy boots on his feet. He is an Arizona boy, traveled but still rooted in the ranch of his childhood. It makes sense that Jack chooses cotton, a natural fibre.
