- The legendary runner was also something of a medical miracle. As a small boy, his legs were severely burned in a freak schoolhouse fire that took the life of his adored older brother, Floyd. For more than a year, it was thought that he would never walk again, much less run. When, through sheer determination, he ultimately regained the strength in his legs, walking, and then running, seemed to almost come naturally.
